falltricksWho inspired you to become a hair stylist? My father, who was a fantastic hairdresser. As a small boy I loved watching him in action and from an early age aspired to follow in his footsteps.

Where did you train?I began in John frieda’s London salon and then worked as assistant to Nicky Clarke. It’s fair to say that I learned from the best in the business.

What is the most exciting aspect of your job? There are many, but as Global Artistic Director for Matrix I travel the world training and working on stage. every journey brings something new and inspiring. Tell us about your salon at The LibertyI wanted to create an inspirational environment for my clients. We have a fantastic salon with amazing stylists, three spa beauty rooms and a training school.

What is the worst thing a woman can do with her hair?Cut it herself! please, please leave this

to the professionals. A good haircut is the key to looking and feeling great.

What is your most important hair care tip?To ensure that your hair is professionally cut about every six to eight weeks, this will maintain the condition. Do you have any famous clients?Lots - though we can’t mention them by name in order to protect their privacy! Let’s just say, we’ve worked with pop groups on music videos, catwalk models and our work can be seen in almost all of the hair magazines.

What tips do you have for aspiring young stylists? You can never have too much training. Keep learning and never think you know it all!

What products and brands do you use on a daily basis?Matrix beach is pliable, long lasting and holds the style I want all day. I also love the Matrix Biolage range which is 100% organic and leaves hair feeling fantastic.

How did you get into the styling business?I have always been fascinated with dressing up and the power that beautiful clothes have on our moods and the way we feel about ourselves. As a psychologist I understand the connection between our self-image and our emotions and consequently our interaction with others. everybody can look beautiful! It is really a skill that can be learned and through styling I can help people to look good and feel great about themselves.

What excites you about styling? The incredible transformation that can be achieved in a few hours and the pleasure and confidence that someone can get just by knowing what suits them. I have many WOW moments in my work! Research shows that attractive people also have more success in their work and more dating experiences, so my job as a stylist and coach is to help people to achieve success in all aspects of their lives.

What excites you about your role at The Liberty?I have lived in essex (Chadwell heath, Romford) for over 20 years. The Liberty shopping

meet etel harris

etel is The Liberty’s personal stylist and believes that knowing what suits you increases confidence and success. here, she explains why a stylish future is a bright one, as well as giving some essential fashion tips.

centre has always been the favourite place to shop for me and my family as there are so many great shops to choose from. I love the way The Liberty keeps up with trends and caters for different audiences. Also there are always great events, such as fashion shows, wedding fairs and many others, which makes shopping an enjoyable experience. It is great that I am now part of this team!

If you could be a personal stylist to one person, dead or alive, who would it be?Angelina Jolie! She is classic and romantic and always looks impeccable and so beautiful.

Who are your favourite designers?Chanel. She created timeless designs that are still popular. In fact her influence still extends to a lot of high street fashion designs. She became a style icon known for her simple yet sophisticated outfits paired with great accessories In your opinion, what are the most important items of clothing to invest in?You should always have one good quality item for each category,a great suit, a fantastic pair of

shoes, a designer bag, etc, so you know you can always feel great for a special occasion. What’s more important, feeling comfortable or looking trendy?Coco Chanel said ‘luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury’.

What’s your view on using accessories to enhance existing outfits? With accessories you can make an outfit from primark to look like a prada item. Accessories are a very important part of styling.

What advice can you give to people wanting to pursue a career in styling? If you are looking at becoming a fashion stylist it is essential that you have a real passion for style and fashion as well as an understanding of all the latest trends within the industry. I attend the shows that give me an indication of what is going to be happening for next season. I’m constantly looking at magazines, not only uK editions but also all those from europe and America, to get a really broad overview of what is happening.

What are the most important attributes a fashion show producer should have?A good knowledge of fashion and music is essential, but it’s also important to have an open mind and be aware of the needs of the audience

What inspired you to work in this business? It wasn’t planned! I originally trained at the Royal Ballet. from there I was approached by a model agency to work in catwalk shows. That experience inspired me to create a new, more passionate type of production company very different from the usual superficial approach.

How did you start out?It was back in 1991. I was choreographing a fashion show for an independent high street store. A shopping centre marketing manager who was at the show, liked what she saw and asked me to produce her centre’s first fashion event.

fashion show producerup CLOSe AND peRSONAL

meet Danielle Banjo

Danielle Banjo began her career as a ballet dancer,

became a model and then set up a highly successful

catwalk production company which organises The Liberty’s

popular fashion shows. She’s also Mum to two members of

Britain’s Got Talent winning dance group Diversity. here she

tells The Lookbook the secrets of her success, why she loves

The Liberty and gives some advice to budding models.

What is your main objective at The Liberty? Our main aim is to deliver a high energy visual display of fashion, which showcases the fantastic range of clothing available.

What inspires you about fashion at The Liberty? Two things. first the great choice of fashion for people of all ages, shapes and sizes and secondly because The Liberty has such a fun, friendly environment to work and shop in.

What is your typical routine on show days?preparation for the show is very intense and takes place during the week leading up to the show. On the morning of the show all clothing is brought back stage so that dressers and models can check that everything is in order. Models then go for hair and make-up. finally, I check all running orders and arrange a team briefing.

Do you have a ‘survival kit’ for show days?Lots of water, headache tablets and a big smile!

What is the biggest challenge you face when running a show?To entertain and inspire everyone involved.

What is the most amazing thing that’s happened at one of your events? My two sons Ashley and Jordon who have been involved in our fashion shows since they were 5, are founder members of the dance group Diversity. During an appearance at The Liberty they were approached by Britain’s Got Talent researchers to enter the show - and the rest is history!

Tell us a difficult situation you have faced and how you got out of it?I’m very proud to say that I have rarely encountered a difficult situation. however, on one occasion many years ago, a model fell off the stage. fortunately, she didn’t hurt anything but her pride.

What would you suggest to people who want to be involved into the business?Research the model agencies you approach very carefully and always avoid paying for a portfolio when joining an agency.
