As we move into my period of time as your President, I would like to thank all of those who have served as leaders of the Kansas Society in the past and encourage those stepping into new rolls to be the best at communication, leadership, and helpfulness that your position dictates. We are in, maybe, the most productive State Society in the Nation when we consider that we are far from the Battlefields of the Revolution, the graveyards of our Patriot ancestors, and the monuments erected to those who fought for our Freedom. We are not far from the will it takes to preserve the ideals and concepts that made us proud to carry on these points as we live them each day. Our Nation needs us to honor our heritage more now than most realize by sharing our founding documents and the principles of Liberty. We must recognize publicly the dedication to our nation’s individuals, who advance the cause of our forefathers when they teach in our schools, fly and salute our Flag, remember our fallen, and pray to our God for our country. We as members of the SAR honor our own Patriot ancestors as we perpetuate the cause they gave us in our inheritance named the United States of America. The past couple of weeks have been truly exciting. Bob Capps and Jordon Chambers have been working on updating our website and that has produced many good things with more to come. They are taking suggestions and if they can see a way to accomplish wishes in the future I think that they will do so. This was much needed and thanks to these men. I encourage all of the membership to take an active part in our Americanism goals and Stark goals. If your president has not gotten you a copy of the report forms email me at [email protected] and I will get them to you. One of my primary initiatives is to aid Bryan Wampler (Stark) and Justin Engleman (Americanism) in their compilation of the records for our report to National at the end of the year. If we all record our activities on these reports on a monthly basis, and send them to these men, we will not have to recreate from memory the year’s work. Kansas over the last few years has really excelled in the Americanism category and I bet we did not report a lot of what could have made it even better. Being an American is a great inheritance the men of the SAR have been given. Please welcome new members, get them involved, share our story with those who will listen, and go out and have fun with the blessing bestowed upon us. Thank you for the opportunity to be your President, and thank you to all of the men who have already stepped up to help make the Kansas Society even better.

Patriot of the plains: McPherson man will serve as Kansas SAR president By Patricia Middleton Staff Writer McPherson Sentinel

Posted Mar 22, 2019 at 8:01 AM

McPherson resident Bobbie Hulse will be installed as the president for the Kansas Society of Sons of the American Revolution at the organization’s annual convention on Saturday.

Hulse’s interest in the SAR was sparked by an unusual object — a pulpit Bible from a church in Saint Simons Island, Georgia. He bought the Bible as part of a box of antique books being auctioned off at an antique dealer’s estate sale. Being a student at the time, it was one of the only items he could afford.

“Being in junior high, I didn’t have a whole lot of money. I mowed grass for people for 50 cents an hour with my own mower and buying my own gas, so it didn’t pay well,” Hulse laughed.

When Hulse came across the box decades later, he searched online to see if the church still existed. In the process, a link on the town’s chamber of commerce page led him to the SAR. Remembering his great aunt had told him his ancestor, Richard Hulse, had fought in the Revolutionary War, Hulse sent an inquiry and got a call from a member a few days later who would aided him in the documentation of his heritage.

Since joining the SAR just over a decade ago, Hulse found himself increasingly involved in the society’s activities and mission of promoting patriotism and serving veterans.

“My first meeting, I was asked to be secretary of the chapter,” Hulse recalled.

At the second meeting, he was asked to take on the role of vice president; when the next meeting was convened, the chapter’s president was taken ill and Hulse stepped into the gap.

“I moved up pretty fast.” Hulse laughed.

Hulse took his duties seriously, serving for four years as president of his local chapter while starting a newsletter and sponsoring dozens of applicants, which required him to assist in the genealogical research for each individual. He is currently finishing up a term as the state society’s vice president.

SAR members serve veterans in many ways, including visiting them in nursing homes and hospitals, transporting them to appointments, assisting with their genealogical

research, or donating items to veteran’s organizations. They also promote Americanism through youth programs, acknowledging proper flag displays, founding and building up new chapters, poster and essay contests, and honoring public servants and volunteers.

That purpose is one Hulse said became more of a priority for him after 9/11.

“This was one of the ways I felt I could inspire young people to learn about the country and our Constitution,” Hulse said. SAR founded its society in Kansas in 1892. Until recently, membership was dropping and chapters across the state were closing.

“People these days don’t do this stuff as much as they used to,” Hulse said.

Hulse was at the forefront of efforts to turn that trend around; thanks in part to his making hundreds of phone

Page 3: The Liberty Bell · 2020. 4. 25. · Welkner (HL) officiated and the Kansas Color Guard presented a Flag Folding Ceremony and then saluted as each of the 30 late ompatriot’s names

calls and attending meetings across the state, SAR membership in Kansas is now double what it was a decade ago.

“My goal in the next two years is to put in four more chapters,” Hulse said. ”...It’s time to go to work.”

To join the SAR, a person must be a male, lineal descendant of a patriot who supported the American Revolution — which is not always someone who fought in the war.

“Proof of patriotism is not necessarily that they were in the regular army or the militia; it can also be the fact that they provided sustenance to troops,” Hulse said.

Having documentation of an ancestor’s paying taxes to fund the war is another path to being accepted as a member. Some SAR members can even trace their family tree back on women who donated supplies like gunpowder, socks, or livestock and had their actions recorded at town meetings.

“There are things like that that count as providing assistance to the cause,” Hulse said.

Using census records and other genealogical documents, many people can trace their family tree back to an ancestor that lived during the Revolutionary War.

In recent years, genealogical proof standards have changed, but DNA testing can provide additional information for individuals.

“If you get a DNA match to a (Daughter of the American Revolution), it helps solidify what may not have been quite acceptable. That adds further proof,” Hulse said.

The Kansas Society Sons of the American Revolution’s 127th Annual Conference

McPherson, Kansas was the host to this year’s annual meeting where we recognized the end of the term of outgoing President Dennis Nelson (DX) and his wife Susan of Overland Park and inducted and welcomed new President Bobbie Hulse (SP) and his wife Debbie, of McPherson.. The Sons of the Plains Chapter hosted a wonderful and well attended two day conference at the McPherson Museum and Arts Foundation. Secretary General Jack Manning (NH) and his wife Sheila were our honored guests. The Society is in good hands with Bobbie and Deb and the slate of new officers elected today and inducted at this weekend.

Friday Night Host Reception

Friday evening compatriots from across the state gathered at the McPherson Museum for registration, a wonderful Barbeque Buffet, a fascinating presentation on the La Brea

Tar Pits, meeting new friends and sharing some good fellowship. McPherson has a very interesting history and you don’t have too

many opportunities to

get out to some of the different towns in Kansas to see what they have to offer. Did you know the town is named after Union General James B. McPherson who was killed in the Battle of Atlanta in 1864 and never stepped foot in the state? Or that the US Basketball Team that won Gold in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin was sponsored by the Globe Refinery of McPherson? And what is the connection between the LaBrea Tar Pits and McPherson College?

Business Meeting The Kansas SAR meets five times a year, our four quarterly Board of Governor’s Meetings in Emporia and our Annual Conference. The annual Conference rotates between a two day conference when inducting new officers and a one day conference in the off years. It is held in a different place each year and in induction years is usually in the home town of the new President so his friemds and chapter members can take

part in the celebration. The business meeting is where delegates vote on the slate of new officers recommended by the Nominating

Committee (during election years) and where the State President gets to recognize the Chapters with Streamers for their accomplishments over the last year. Streamers are awarded for a variety of activities and accomplishments from participating in SAR Youth Programs to increasing membership, to participating in Color Guard activities and even submitting articles to the Liberty Bell.

Youth Awards Luncheon

Youth Awards are a big part of the SARs Education Outreach Program and a key component of our educational mission. Kansas has done a great

job over the years supporting the National Programs and this year was no

exception. Kansas will have nominees in the following programs: The Dr. Tom and Betty Lawrence American History Teacher of the year (2); The Rumbaugh Orations Contest; The Knight Essay Contest: The Eagle Scout Scholarship; The Adams Brochure Contest; the Americanism Poster Contest and The Outstanding JROTC Cadet of the Year Award. We were the only state to participate in

all the contests when PG Tom Lawrence challenged the state societies with a $500 bonus a

couple years ago and it looks like we will hit the mark again this year. We were honored to have our two

American History Teachers’ Jerry Gross (HL) and Taylor Smith, our Eagle Scout and the Kansas CAR President at the Youth Awards Luncheon to speak with us and the winning Knight Essay winner, was read by First Lady Susan Nelson.

Installation Banquet

The Annual Conference wrapped up Saturday evening with a farewell to President Dennis and First Lady Susan Nelson who were celebrating two very successful years at the helm. Following cocktail hour there was a receiving line where people could pay their respects to the Nelson’s and meet Secretary General Jack and Sheila Manning, NSSAR. Jack has been recommended to be the next President General of the National Society pending election at National Congress this summer. Color Guard Commander Dewey Fry and SG Jack Manning presented Silver Color Guard Medals to CG Members who had earned enough points through participation in chapter, state, district and

national color guard events to earn the medals. He also presented the Kansas Colonial Soldier of the year Award to Color Guardsman Brooks Lyles. This award is earned

through a similar process to the Color Guard Medals, but focused on actions within the state for the current year. He was also awarded the Barney Ellis Spirit Award for 2019. Tim

Peterman presented membership awards and recognized two individuals with Thirty Year Pins. Dennis presented the annual Kansas Society Awards, other awards and medals to outgoing officers

and committee chairs. And minding the words of Abigail Adams to her husband, “To remember the Ladies”, President Nelson presented medals to First Lady Susan and

outgoing Ladies Auxiliary President Diane Ungvarsky. Diane presented Ruby Nelson with a Medal of Appreciation for her 4 years as the Auxiliary Treasurer and passed the gavel to Debbie Hulse the new Auxiliary President.

Secretary General Jack Manning spoke for a few minutes and then inducted three new compatriots of the Sons of the Plains Chapter, as well as swearing in the new slate of State and Chapter officers in attendance. Then the event everyone in McPherson was waiting for, the induction of new Society President Bobbie Hulse of the

Sons of the Plains Chapter. Bobbie has had years of distinguished service to the Kansas Society and earned his way to the Presidency through his hard work and demonstrated potential for greater things. Bobbie will be the first President of the Kansas Society from the central/western portion of the state since Martin Klotzbach of the Thomas Jefferson Chapter. Welcome aboard Mr. President!

Red Carpet Candid’s

Patriot’s Day in Kansas The Kansas SAR Color Guard marched in the McLouth, Kansas Annual Patriot’s Day Parade Saturday 13 April. Advertised as a Big Day in a Small Town, this has been a favorite event of the Kansas SAR Color Guard since

the days when Compatriot Fred

Kaffenberger would march in it by himself, when he couldn’t get anyone else to join him. This year we had 8 members of

the Color Guard from three chapters. Leading the parade was the Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard from the 1st Infantry Division from Fort Riley. We were number three in the procession, right behind the marching band. Our thanks to Candace

Braksick, the Kiwanis and the McLouth City government for helping to put on this great annual event. Please plan on joining us next year!

Left to right are Richard Cox (DX), Brooks Lyles (HL), Alan Martin (MC), Dewey Fry (DX) Tom Chycota (HL), Robert Wandel (TJ), Kirk Rush (DX), and Steven French (DX).

She will be completing her term as President in July and we look forward as a State Society to working closely with and supporting her replacement.

Sara Ruddell Davis Patriot Grave Marking

By John Forbes, Historian, KSSAR Sarah Ruddell Davis, Kansas’ first verified Patriot of the American Revolution will be honored by a Patriot Grave Marking on May 11, 2019 at 1:00P at Shawnee Methodist Mission Cemetery, in Fairway, Kansas. Sarah Ruddell was captured on June 24, 1780. She, along with about 400 others, were establishing a permanent presence at Ruddell’s Station in the Western part of Virginia (now Kentucky) just south of the Licking River. A combined British and Indian force under the command of Col. Byrd forced the surrender with the presence of a 6# field piece which the fortification could not withstand. The terms of the surrender specified that the women and children would be taken by the British and the men by the Indians. When the gate opened the Indians rushed in and the surrender agreement was reversed. Those considered unable to make a forced march to Detroit were killed, including a three-year-old cousin of Sarah’s who was thrown on a fire and burned to death with the child’s mother forced to watch. Two of Sarah’s older brothers were also captured, but only one survived the march north. Also captured were two of her cousins both of whom did not return till after the Treaty of Greenville (1795). In 1791 Sarah married Thomas Davis who also had survived years of captivity. Their daughter Sarah Davis married Rev. Thomas Johnson founder of the Shawnee Methodist Indian Mission. Sarah Ruddell Davis died while living with her daughter Sarah Davis Johnson and is buried with many of the family members. The Cemetery is located on the South side of Shawnee Mission Parkway, between 3 & 4 blocks east of Mission Rd. Or about 1 mile west of State Line Rd. Fairway, Kansas. There is no parking on the Parkway. Use the lot of the Old Mission Methodist Church and follow the sidewalk.

Dispatches from the Western Front

From the Prairie Chapters

Bennington, Ft. Hays and Sons

of the Plains

Roosevelt Elementary Poster Contest

winners:

This year the Sons of the Plains Chapter SAR is proud to announce the winners of the Revolutionary War Poster Contest for fifth grade students. The winners are Avery Foster 1st, Ava Koehn 2nd, and Jillian Brown 3rd. They were presented their checks by State SAR president Bobbie Hulse who is shown with the winners wearing the uniform of George Washington’s Army. Over 50 students participated in the contest from Roosevelt Elementary in McPherson. When asked what they enjoyed most about doing the posters the answers were very much the same they enjoyed the art work part and they really enjoyed the research and learning about the Patriot that they chose for the theme of their poster. The students, by request of the teachers, were given a group of six patriots most of whom they had never heard of so it did require some serious research and development in putting together the posters. As you can see they did themselves proud. These students are now looking forward to the next challenging contest, The Tri-fold Brochure Contest which uses the theme subjects, our founding documents. For those who are not familiar with those they are; the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence. The contests are open to any student who is in the grade in which they are studied, generally in middle school. Thank you to all of the 5th graders who participated this year there were many, many fine posters. Those 5th graders next year who wish to

participate will do their posters on an event of the Revolution.

BENNINGTON CHAPTER (Salina Area) Dick Trow, President Meets 1 Nov Presbyterian Manor Assisted Living Conference Room 2601 E. Crawford, Salina KS,

The Abilene VFW has several members doing a project of cleaning Grave Stones. This is an excellent idea to serve, gain public acceptance and do something that lasts and really needs to be done. Tom White, who is currently putting together his SAR application and has been attending the Bennington Chapter

meetings, (he has even done one of the programs) has been involved in a service project. Devin Gray, Frankie Hottman and others have been cleaning grave stones in Abilene using an

approved method that does not harm even the Marble

stones. Take a look at the before and after pictures attached. Tom has even enlisted his wife Donna and Krystal his 6 year old granddaughter as helpers and teaching Krystal about history of the veterans whose stones they are cleaning. Tom has volunteered to go anywhere and teach the proper method, the proper cleaning agent and answer questions to those willing to take on a project in their area. This could be

an excellent Eagle Scout Project, DAR project, SAR Chapter project or even an individual way to pay it forward. The D-2 Cleaner is relatively inexpensive and the results are super as you can see by the pictures. If a chapter wishes to be visible,

promote good will and just plain do something they can be proud of let me know and I will get you in touch with Tom, soon to be a member of the Bennington Chapter. He will give you a demonstration.
