As we move into the colder months I hope that youare all keeping well and warm.

Winter is a time to relax and catch up on maintenanceof equipment and printing those magnificent pictures. Butof course there will always be opportunities of getting outand taking some more pictures.

So take advantage of them when they occur. Butremember to avoid mixing in crowds.

With Covid-19, things appear to have improved overmost of the country (but not so much in Victoria where Ilive). In most areas sport and other community activitieshave become more available.

But, as I said last time, herd instinct still prevails.Crowding and close proximity occurs in many populartourist locations.

We have seen this over the recent holiday weekend, many visitors wanting a break from lockdown taking theadvantage to converge on popular areas.

This is the time of the year when our subs are due, please follow the notice in The Lens and pay promptly, remember all our committee are volunteersand if burdened by having to chase thingslike overdue fees they may decide to resigntheir role.

It is also the time when we should becalling for nominations for the Executive,President, Secretary, Divisional Secretary,Treasurer and Editor.

While I have been in this role forover a mere 18 years I know Rita began herrole much earlier than this. We are indebtedto Graeme Collins as Editor, he has beensetting out The Lens for 10 years and JennyDavidson as Secretary for 12 years.

Calls for fresh faces in recent yearshave gone unanswered.

So please consider if you could helpin any of these areas, if you would like to

talk to me about them please do not hesitate contacting me.I remember the story repeated below about helping withtasks.

Here’s the story, titled “Whose Job Is It, Anyway?”

This is a story about four people named Everybody,Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an importantjob to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebodywould do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody didit. Somebody got angry about that, because it wasEverybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it,but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It endedup that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody didwhat Anybody could have done.

Until next time, keep well, keep safe and importantlykeep photographing,

Jim Thyer, Hon. President.

Hi Everyone, Graeme rang me tonight to remind me about my

report, I thought I had sent one but now of course this onewill be very current.

I hope our members living in Victoria are notimpacted by the new virus outbreak, it seems it will be along time before we get back to normal, perhaps we willhave a new normal.

We do belong to a society that is very different to theone we knew when we were younger, as members who arein the same circles as me will know, for the last three years(yes its hard to believe but it is three years) I have beeninterested in taking night photos.

It started when a course was offered locally by ayoung guy from the NSW Central Coast who travelled todifferent towns and offered a one night course; it wasreasonably priced and I like to support this type of thing asit is often hard to get wokshops in the country.

Four of our CameraClub members attended andwe did learn a lot. Three of uscontinued all that season andlearnt to take those interestingpanorama Milky Way shots, last year we were down totwo and we started to includelight painting in our shots. This year we are still goingout in the freezing cold andtaking our night time shots.

For a while with Covid restrictions we couldn’t go soI took so many photos of the moon from my front yard I amreally over it. I learnt how to take multiple images and stackthem and bring out the natural colours of the moon, butmonth after month it is still the same.

Back out at last to other destinations but running outof foreground subjects. We have been trying our hand atstar trails as well but again there is a sameness after a while.

So what did I start to mention, it is very cold at nightat this time of the year, I made lens warmers for mycameras, a holder for hand warmers that fit into a slot andare held to the lens with velcro. Yesterday the friend I go

out with sent me a link to a jacket with heating elementssewn in. Seriously you can buy a jacket, pants, socks, gloves even innersoles that have heating elements and arebattery operated. They are washable, you just have toremove the battery. Motorbike riders can buy ones that arecharged from the battery on their bikes.

Being cooped up for so long and not spendinganything but I could still do some online work I thought Iwould treat myself to a heated jacket, it is coming fromMelbourne and the guy I spoke to said it could arrivetomorrow, that is interesting as it takes over a week for afolio to get from Newcastle to Orange.

Australia Post has indicated that the reduced mailservices introduced during Covid will continue andprobably we will not go back to daily mail deliveries, thecircles I am involved with still get around within the monthbut that is due to the prompt responses from circle members.

I have attached one of my night time images, it is somuch easier to take these with digital cameras than it usedto be with film. I have a number of quick tip sheets foranyone interested in giving it a go and if you livesomewhere warmer than here you probably won’t need aheated jacket.

Stay safe and well everyone.Jenny - Secretary

What is a Layer

One of the most important keys to learning andmastering Photoshop is using layers.

Why work on layers at all?• They do not destroy your original photo.• You are working on top of your photo.• You will have more control.• You can use blending modes to change the way

layers interact.• You can change the opacity of

any effects.• You will have or can add layer

masks so that you can workselectively on your photo withany adjustments you make.

• There are a few different types of layers.

When you open an image, it opens with a newbackground layer. You can see this in the Layers Pallet, ifit is not visible hit F7 or Click on Window and make surethere is a tick in the Layers Option

Create a new blank layer.

What type of layers can we have?

Blank LayerWe can hav

e a new blank layer (Shift, Ctrl OrCmd, and ‘N’) or under Layer – ‘New Layer’: or Click onthe New Layer at the bottom of the layers Pallet. This will create a blank transparent layer. This is usefulwhen you want to add or change something on a photo. You can turn the layer on or off by toggling the eyeball, add a layer style such as a bevel or emboss, or change theopacity by working on this type of layer.

Adjustment Layer:

Using the black and white circle in the layerspalette or going under ‘Layer’ – ‘New Adjustment Layer’– and then whichever adjustment you want: This will createa transparent layer where you can make direct changes toyour photograph without effecting your original in any way.

This is how to edit every photo. Any levels, curves,hue/saturation layer, channel mixer layer, etc that do use anadjustment layer. Why? The way adjustment layers work isyou make the changes on a transparent layer. They changethe appearance of pixels underneath without actuallytouching or destroying anything. So they are NON-DESTRUCTIVE. Another BIG reason to use adjustmentlayers is that you can go back and edit these layers evenafter you are onto new layers, by double clicking theadjustment layer icon of any layer. You can stack theselayers and they accumulate. They do not cover each otherup. They work together. And most importantly, they havelayer masks. Layer masks allow you to selectively effect aphoto.

Duplicate Layer:

(Ctrl or Cmd and ‘J’) or under ‘Layer’ – ‘DuplicateLayer’: This will create a duplicate copy of whatever layeryou are on. If you are on an adjustment layer, it will copythat layer and double the effect. If you are on the“Background” layer, it will copy that layer. When youduplicate a pixel layer (such as the background), rememberthan it will cover up anything under it, unless certainblending modes are used. As a result, use these sparingly.Duplicate layers are most useful when you run a sharpeningfilter or for using when cloning etc. Remember duplicatelayers greatly increase file size. We will use a Duplicatelayer of your image and apply a blending mode later in thetutorial.

Create a layer from a selection

You may wish to copy only a portion of a layer, orperhaps you would prefer that one area of a layer was on itsown layer. You can copy or cut any selection to a new layereasily. Activate the layer (click on it) that contains theinformation you wish to duplicate and select the area youwould like to work with. Choose Layer>New>Layer viaCopy. For a quicker method, right click (Windows) orCommand click (Mac) on the layer containing the selectedarea, choose the Layer via Copy or Layer via Cut from theflyout menu. The selected area will be duplicated to a newlayer if you chose to copy.
