Program2011

September 15 Thursday 4-5 pm Topic: “Then and Now Flower Show & LGC History Exhibit Speaker: Arabella Dane Title: What The Judges Saw Place: Ventfort Hall Hostess Committee: N. MILLER, White, Davies, McMahon and Murray

Another month - another reason to celebrate and honor our 100th Anniversary feat with a wonderful GCA Flower Show, a chronological LGC history exhibit and an exciting speaker, Arabella Dane, an approved GCA flower Show Judge in three disciplines from the North Shore Garden Club of Massachusetts.

October 5 Wednesday 10:30 am

Topic: Even Birds Do It...Cole Porter put it to music and Rene Laubach is researching it - come and learn what “it” is all about. Speaker: Rene Laubach Place: Pleasant Valley Bird Sanctuary Hostess Committee: DUNLAEVY, Fenn, Merton, Fredericks, MacFadyen

Director, Rene Laubach will give a preseentation on MassAudu-bon’s five year Breeding Bird Atlas project. The project’s goal is to determine the status of our states breeding populations. A short walk to observe birds in the sanctuary will follow the ausio visual program, weather permitting.Celebrate along with our feathered friends at the Sanctuary - a project that the LGC helped to take flight in 1929.

November 2 Wednesday 10:30 am Topic: Creating a Safer and Healthier Home Speaker: C.E.T. Guest Speaker Place: Home of Mary Spina Hostess Committee: SMITH, Shaw, Scheels, Carlisle, Brooks & Pritchard

Contrary to Mary’s request that we bring “Windex” and “Pledge” to this meeting, we are not cleaning her windows nor dusting her furniture - no matter how persuasive she is! Rather we are going to hear energy saving techniques and more...Prior to our meeting, Mary will have had an energy audit of her house. We will hear all the suggestions and reccomendations that CET has made and alternatives we might be able to apply to our own lives.

December 7 Wednesday 3-5 pm Topic: Christmas Tea and Carol Sing Place: Home of Ginger Schwartz Hostess Committee: DOUGLAS, Baldwin, Lindenmaier, Jackson

Come together for a lovely holiday season Christmas Tea.

HOSTESSING means providing refreshments, flower arrange-ments, seating, helping to set up and clean up, and encouraging other members to attend.

IT IS UP TO YOU to trade or find a substitute if the date given to you is inconvenient, and let the Head Hostess, Hos-pitality Chair, and NEWSletter Editor know well in advance of the date.

CALLING POSTWhen information needs to get out in a hurry, “The Calling Post”, activated by the Club President, is an efficient and cost effec-tive way of reaching by phone those of our membership who are listed with them.

ANNUAL REPORTS2010 - 2011

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

What could be better on a summer day then wandering through some of Stockbridge’s finest gardens, at times with an umbrella in hand, for our twentieth Garden and House Tour. The sun did come out… and it was glorious. We all work very hard, make lots of money, and then give it back to the greater community.

As LGC will be 100 years old in 2011, Debbie Smith and her committee scoured our archives in order to create the fabulous exhibit of our history that is now up and on view at Ventfort Hall. What Debbie found in her research is that as far as hard work and giving back to the community is concerned, the club hasn’t changed a bit in 100 years. We officially kicked off our 100th Anniversary year at the Annual Meeting at Skippy Nixon’s home. There was quite an array of hats and some even wore their white gloves. The NEWSletter has featured something interesting from our archives every month.

Our members continue to distinguish themselves. MaryEllen O’Brien received the Garden Club of America Zone Communi-cations Award at the Zone I Meeting, hosted by the Cambridge Plant and Garden Club May 17, 18, 2011. Anne Fredericks attended for the second time, the National Affairs and Legislation Committee meeting in Washington, DC. She gave us a terrific meeting soon after her return. It made us sit up and notice how important and respected the GCA is among the legislators in our Nation’s Capitol.

We are looking forward to more events celebrating our anniver-sary. They will be included in next year’s report.

Respectfully submitted,Mary Harrison

COMMUNITY PARTICIPATIONThe annual Lilac Park workday, April 28, was attended by more than a dozen cheerful volunteers. Between and during rain show-ers, the morning shift edged and weeded the lily bed. In the af-ternoon, a few workers addressed the lilac beds near the Church on the Hill Chapel. Hats off to Susan Dana, who participated in both sessions and shared her horticultural skills, honed during the workshop she had arranged with Ken Gooch, and to Andy Breslin, who took over as coordinator of the work day for this writer.

Lilac Park had an early and spectacular display of blooms. It is agreed that the park needs a major overhaul soon; pruning, thin-ning and some recovery work in several areas will assure the long-term beauty of this popular public green.

The Christian Center gratefully received some fifteen boxes of food and household supplies donated by LGC members at the Gardener’s Breakfast in early March. The director wrote a heart-felt note of thanks, reminding all of us that 2011 was a particu-larly difficult year for many low income families in Pittsfield. They accept donations all year long and would appreciate any and all similar contributions.

The Past Presidents of The Lenox Garden Club have purchased a Syringa Adelaide Dunbar in memory of Mary Jane Emmet. It will be planted in late June, adding grace and color to Lilac Park in the same style as our beloved Googie.

CONSERVATIONOur new conservation project this year is “Grow an Extra Row”. Members participating will donate produce to the Food Net which is an organization involved in distributing food to local food pan-tries and food kitchens. Donations can be from our own gardens or purchased. Paul Deslauriers, the director of the Food Net is very appreciative of our involvement. Our commitment is only to deposit our donations at drop off sites. We have a core of twelve members participating. As there is a tremendous need for fresh food in the Berkshires’ food pantries we hope more members will join as the project develops.

At the Zone I mini meeting in October the USDA gave us an update on the threat of the Asian Longhorn Beetle. We learned about the identification and methods of control. Our committee is planning a meeting next year dedicated to educating our members about this pest. Until then several of our conservation moments have presented information on the ALB.

In May, Anne Fredericks gave an extensive report on the NAL con-ference in Washington which she attended. Much was learned about the power of the GCA in environmental government affairs and the impressive quality of GCA member’s education on envi-ronmental issues. We continue to have our conservation moment before each meet-ing. Thanks to committee members who have shared many infor-mative ideas.

FLOWER SHOW COMMITTEEThe LGC Flower Show Committee has had a busy year prepar-ing for its upcoming GCA Flower Show, Then and Now. Commit-tee members offered several workshops to help potential entrants understand the requirements to enter the show. Demonstrations on Botanical Jewelry Making for Classes: 1 and 2, TREASURED GEM (an antique style broach) and MODERN KEEPSAKE (a con-temporary necklace). Also, workshops for Flower Arrangement Classes: 1 and 5, STEP BACK IN TIME (a decorated shoe) and IT’S MY BAG (a decorated purse) sparked enthusiasm to enter the show.

This year WAFA, The World Association of Flower Arrangers will hold its show in Boston and will features some 600 arrangements. A world competition held every three years in a member country, this is the first time it has been held in the US and our member Kimberley Crocker will be in attendance offering her help and as-sistance for a successful show.

The Zone I Annual Meeting Flower Show, City Roots, had an entry in the flower arrangement division from MaryEllen O’Brien as our club’s commitment to the meeting. MaryEllen’s entry took a Blue,Dorothy Vietor Muger Award and Best in Show. Hort entries did very nicely as well. Paula Gimblette’s Boxwood won a Commen-dation and Ginger Schwartz’s Hawthorne and Susan Dana’s Hon-ey Locust won an Honorable Mention.

We all look forward to September 15th and our GCA Flower Show Then and Now, to celebrate our club’s 100 years of gardening and community history. We will have flower arrangements, horticul-ture, photography, a conservation exhibit and an educational ex-hibit too. Join the fun and become a part of the history of our club.

GARDEN HISTORY AND DESIGNThe GH&D committee had another successful year with the docu-mentation and acceptance at the Archives of American Gardens at the Smithsonian of “Old Fields,” the Sayman garden in Rich-mond. This beautiful garden with its free-form flower borders was photographed by Helga Kaiser, with some invaluable help from Barb May who was called in to photograph some areas when Hel-ga was out of town. Working with the floral beauty of these special gardens is so rewarding – and educational. It is a pleasure to be on this committee. And I look forward to working with Jytte Brooks who will be heading this committee in the coming year

HORTICULTUREWe began the year planting seeds of sarracenia purpurea (purple pitcher plant) for the Challenge Class in the Centennial Flower Show in September of 2011. Those were a challenge indeed, so we also started seeds of blue fescue, which have been much more successful.

At our April membership program, “All About Lilacs” , committee members presented information on the history of lilacs in hor-ticulture and literature, a history of Lilac Park, propagation and cultivation of lilacs, examples of popular and choice lilacs, and introduced “Bloomerang”, a reblooming lilac. Members enthusi-astically signed up to purchase “Bloomerang” plants, enabling us to exceed our fund raising goal for the year.

Then we went out to Lilac Park for a demonstration of pruning lilacs by Arborist Ken Gooch. The lilacs in the park need major pruning and renovation, and we plan another workshop there in the fall. The Hort Committee is working with the Community Par-ticipation Committee on a plan for the long term care of the plant-ings for which we are responsible. They need a lot of work.

Our entries for the Zone I annual meeting Plant Exchange were very successful, and two novice growers (Paula Gimblette and Ginger Schwartz) won awards. The theme was “Plants that thrive in an urban environment.”

We are continuing to propagate Highlawn Farm peach trees for the LGC project in the GCA Centennial Tree Project. In our third year, we are finding that sprouting seeds and rooting peach cut-tings are very challenging. However, the grafted trees are thriv-ing. We hope to distribute more seeds this fall from Sarah Boyd’s grafted tree and from Alice Field’s trees.

100th ANNIVERSARY ARCHIVE EXHIBIT Many thanks to Studio 2 for graphic design work, to the staff at Ventfort Hall for their patience and unflappable demeanor, and to our members for loaning items for this exhibit and doing all that they have done for these past 100 years!

Having been given the job of organizing and making an exhibit of all the good deeds that the Lenox Garden Club has accom-plished over the past 100 years, I discovered some exciting things during our 100th year. The first was that we learned the myste-rious whereabouts of the beautiful Flower Stamps From All The World book, created by past member Aileen M. Farrell, who was headmistress of Foxhollow School from the 1940’s till 1972. Af-ter her death the book was given to GCA Headquarters in NYC. Unfortunately the LGC kept no copy of the stamp collage pages so we had nothing to go by except that some older members re-membered seeing the book. Later as I perused our 1962 Zone Meeting Photo album I discovered photos of ladies admiring the stamp book with the explanation of its being given to GCA. So in midwinter a small group of us went to GCA Headquarters to see the marveled book of stamps. We also sat on a bench that was given in memory of Mary Borie, another member of our club who had been on the hospitality committee at GCA Headquarters in NYC for many years. Mary also was the driving force who col-lected, tested and published members’ recipes in the Lenox Gar-den Club’s cookbook, Fifty Nifty Treats I, II and III. After reporting this good news to the LGC we decided that our club must make a special trip to GCA Headquarters in NYC in 2012 to marvel at all its collective club treasures!

In midwinter Mary Harrison was contacted by Roy Boutard’s daughter, Jenifer Burghardt, who had discovered in the past Berkshire Garden Center Director’s belongings approximately 60 Glass Slides of LGC members’ gardens taken in 1918 and 1938. She felt that the LGC should have them and kindly made a CD of the slides so that we have been able to reproduce them in photo form. During next year we will try to identify as manygardens and names as we can, and I encourage any member who would like to join this research committee to let me know so we can dig deeper into our illustrious past!
