Wimbledon 2011 20th June - 3rd July

Wimbledon, the oldest tennis tournament in the worldWith summer rapidly approaching

Infotel thought it would be a good idea

to take a look at a very English

traditional annual sporting event,

which captures the world’s attention for two weeks of the British summer.

Wimbledon has been running since

1877, and is the only tennis tournament

still played on its original surface grass,

giving the game its name; lawn tennis. Originally Wimbledon began as “The

All England Croquet club.” During the

tournament’s first edition, only 22

players took part in the only Men’s

Singles competition. Two years later the Men’s Doubles competition was

added and Singles Women’s

competition finally appeared in 1884.

No British man has won the men’s

Singles event at Wimbledon since Fred

Perry in 1936 and no British woman

has won the Ladies Singles since Virginia Wade in 1977. The Wimbledon

championships take place for two

weeks in late June and early July and

start on the Monday falling between

20th and 26th June.

Wimbledon comes with a few of its own

traditions, including: a strict dress code

for competitors and the eating of

strawberries and cream for the crowd. For the first time in 2009 Centre Court

was fitted with a rectractable roof to

prevent rain from delaying final

matches.

Wimbledon Lawn Tennis MuseumThis state of the art museum was opened in 2006 and has been incredibly popular with Wimbledon spectators. It features new technology that will immerse you into the world of tennis.

The museum features a 200° cinema screen

that brings you right into the action of the science of tennis and features a film of the

2005 Championships on Centre Court.

The museum also features interactive touch

screen consoles throughout with games,

facts and interactive features such as the “Get a grip” rotating wheel of rackets to

explore.

With the museum’s use of new technology

you can receive a guided tour by John McEnroe through the more off limits areas

of Wimbledon such as the dressing rooms

and see how the players prepared

themselves for a match.

The museum holds a collection of over 15,000 objects associated with tennis, the

collection began nearly 40 years ago and

contains items dating back from the 1500s.

The Collection features a wide variety of

objects from trophies and medals, fashion items, tennis equipment, jewellery, player

memorabilia, decorative art, fine art, toys,

olympic medals, programmes and

advertisements from the 1930s.

I have stayed at Regan's on Cathedral Road a few times over the years, and am amazed

how much the owner has improved the establishment. The rooms have always been clean

and tidy, but recently all the rooms I have stayed in have been modernised and finished to

a very high standard. All ensuite, many with double showers and expensive fittings, and all

rooms beautifully decorated.

Situated in the vale of Avoca, one of Ireland's most beautiful locations,Woodenbridge Hotel & Lodge combines all the charm of yester year with all the facilities required of the modern hotel.Established in 1608, Woodenbridge Hotel is the oldest hotel in Ireland and has 22 well appointed bedrooms all ensuite and with complimentary Wireless internet access. The hotel overlooks the vale of Avoca and the amazing Woodenbridge Golf Club. Woodenbridge Lodge is the more modern part of the hotel, and is adjacent to the main hotel in wonderful landscaped gardens overlooking the Aughrim River. The lodge rooms have all the facilities of the main hotel, but are away from the hustle and bustle. Twenty of the rooms have their very own balconies.

I stayed here for a long weekend recently and thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. I stayed in the lodge which

is located just beside the main hotel. The room, although basic, was very comfortable with all of the

facilities you would get in the main hotel. The staff were extremely helpful and responsive. The hotel

recently celebrated 400 years and when you sit in the bar or restaurant, the history of the place is visible all

around. This really adds to the experience of staying there. The food was really very good. I stayed on a DBB rate and had dinner in the restaurant on one of the nights. It was a fabulous meal...exceptional quality

and service. I can say the same for the bar food....great range in the menu and the quality of the food was of

the standard of the restaurant. The location of the hotel is ideal. It is approx 4mins drive from Avoca, and

near enough to some of the Wicklow highlights - Meeting of the Waters, Avondale House and the like. I

would thoroughly recommend this hotel for exploring Wicklow county and its environs.

A memorable delight

Throughout our stay the service, care and

Hidden away in the back lanes of South Devon it

is an oasis where self indulgent pleasure is

actively encouraged. Despite the rambling quirky nature of the building our room

On 27th March 2011 Ann Cordner began mounting the steps of a coach which is set to travel through Europe into Moscow. This is only the start of a three month adventure taking her through some of the most remote and beautiful areas of the world.

Described as her ‘epic adventure over land from London to New York’, the 87 day trip

began on Sunday March 27th at Cleopatras Needle where she took her seat on the Oz Bus,

a company dedicated to providing wonderful adventurous travel to destinations such as

Australia, Beijing, Bangkok, Africa, South America and in Ann’s case - New York USA.

But how and why would someone decide to do such a thing?

Ann explains; “The madness started when my friend mentioned that she knew a guy

who was on an "Ozbus" trip and writing a blog. I read the blog, thought, ‘I could do that’

and then made the most stupid mistake of my life. I started telling people that I was

going. Before I knew what was happening I had paid my deposit, met Nick (the blog writer), ordered a rucksack, arranged my vaccinations and committed myself to three

months of craziness”.

Tuesday, April 5, 2011 - Estonia Riga Rigour

This hostel is not good. No heating, dirty showers etc. But the people are very helpful and friendly. This is one of the drawbacks of travelling this way. They don't even have a washing machine, but did

offer to send our stuff to a laundry for us. A few of us decided to take a chance on this. It was a bit

risky. If it didn’t come back we would be in no position to complain because tomorrow we set off for

Tallinn. We needn’t have worried, it came back mid-afternoon beautifully laundered and pressed.

Pity we now have to stuff it all into our luggage!

This morning/afternoon we went on a tour of the old town which is virtually traffic free. When we

started off it was freezing but by lunchtime it was beautifully sunny and warm

Our guide, who spoke perfect English, told us that they had had a dreadful winter with snow up to 1m high in the city and because the country had suffered badly during the recession they didn’t have the

resources to clear the snow.

Wednesday, April 6, 2011 - Latvia Tallin in the snow

On the way to Tallinn we passed the Baltic Sea which was frozen. We had seen people ice fishing on some of the frozen rivers in Riga, but this is taking freezing to a whole new level. There's more snow

in the fields now too and we have been told that it will probably be raining when we arrive. If we

could expect some degree of comfort in the hostel it wouldn’t be too bad, but so far they have been of

a poor standard.

The one in Riga was a massive barn of a place. You could see that at one time it might have been very

grand, but now it’s in poor repair and very, very cold. For some reason the heating wasn’t on any

they had provided completely inadequate electric radiators instead. To add to that everywhere in

general was filthy, especially the bathrooms. Yuk! But, I guess the upside is that if the next hostel is

slightly better it will feel like a palace. I guess it all adds to the general experience!

Page 54: The Leisure Magazine May 2011

Thursday, April 7, 2011 - Latvia

Tallinn - Not the epicentre of the Epicurian world

There has been a nasty virus doing the rounds. Pete started it by losing his voice, but we all put that down to

carousing, now Margaret has gone down with it and she

doesn’t carouse. She is very poorly and others have

started off with the coughing. I’m going off to get some

Sage tea in the hope hope that the Russian customs don’t mistake it for something a bit more energising!

Last night a group of us went to a medieval banquet

restaurant. The food was great. I decided not to have the

elk, bear or wild boar and opted instead for a spicy lamb dish with cinnamon beer to wash it down (what a wimp),

but the food was great and it only cost 20 Euros. Not bad.

Friday 8th April, 2011 - Russia

Half way to paradise

St. Petersburg is stunningly beautiful and the people are

nothing like the border guards. They appear to be

friendly and are even willing to smile without being

concerned that they may be put into strait jackets. Last

night we had a great meal in an Italian restaurant, now you wouldn’t expect that in Russia would you? Tonight

we are going for a meal which incorporates a Russian

concert. Sounds interesting!

Page 55: The Leisure Magazine May 2011

Sunday 9th April, 2011 - Russia Red Square

Arrived Moscow about 6 pm, checked into a very iffy hostel and took ourselves off to Red Square via the ATM which, thankfully, spewed out money. Tomorrow we board the Trans-Siberian Express at

about 1.30 and there we stay for 4 nights out of WiFi range. We may get on-line in Lake Baikal or one

of the other stop-offs along the way. In China we have no access to facebook either so we will all be

having withdrawals.

Monday 12th April, 2011 - Russia

Day 17 of our 87 day trip - Trans - Siberian Express

This is the morning that we go to the next phase of our journey - day 17 of our 87 day trip. The Trans-Siberian Express! Dadada!! To recap – we board the train at lunch time and spend the next 4 nights

in a four person sleeper compartment. There are no showers and one toilet at either end of the

carriage which can't be used when the train is standing in the station or when we are at a border

crossing. There will a certain amount of pre-planning involved in getting this right! Each carriage has

a babushka in attendance and it is probably sensible to befriend her because I guess that the power sockets to recharge our batteries are within her "gift".

The carriage can be locked from the inside but if we all go to the restaurant together the babushka

will lock it for us. Another reason to keep her “on-side”.

Fairbank Hotel Crantock, CornwallWe are a small family run hotel with fourteen individually named, ensuite bedrooms of differing

types and sizes. Having researched in some depth for an online booking tool to suit our

requirements – particularly being able to describe each of our rooms individually on a one-off fee

basis as opposed to being charged commission on each booking – we finally settled with Infotel.

Their flexible system allows us to:

· Individually describe each room

· Show our discounted rates for varying lengths of stay

· Set minimum night stays when or if applicable either short-term or long term

· Vary the minimum night stays for differing periods such as weekends or bank holidays· Add special offers and/or any additional items that may be available

· Receive an SMS text message in addition to an email for each booking received

· Simple set-up and update of the availability calendar

· Easy amendment facility to adjust availability for bookings dealt with direct as opposed to

online· The ability to have the online booking page branded to match our existing website

· Ready and helpful support from Infotel for simple queries and potential system enhancements

· Excellent guest feedback (including from the ‘Hotel Inspector’ who recently stayed after

booking online) regarding the ease of use

‘We would be at a loss without our online booking system through Infotel and wish that we had

found and introduced their online booking tool much earlier!’

Thanks again for all your assistance and best regards

City Warehouse Apartments ManchesterInfotel has been a great find for our business. In terms of service, system use and value for money,

they are way ahead of the other booking agents we use. Other, larger agents give us good levels of

business, but the service is often poor, and the cost is high. The annual fee we paid to Infotel 5

months ago has given us a return of around 4800% so far in terms of business received, which is

incredible. We have recently linked their system to our own website too, and as a result we are seeing this increase further. These guys are good and I can't recommend them highly enough!"
