Make sure you cross out “I agree toI” on your ticket before signing. Many countries make it difficult to file lawsuits in negligence-related cases.

living somewhere only to find out it’s in foreclosure and you could be evicted any day. I had that happen to me years ago and it’s not pleasant. Mr. Fernandez is going to talk to us on “Foreclosure and Loss Mitigation: What Every Legal Staffer Should Know”. We have obtained CLE credit for this meeting. Everyone needs a night out to see their MDLSA friends. I hope you will join us this month as we won’t have a meeting in August.

The Florida Supreme Court issued an opinion addressing mandatory e-mail service on June 21, 2012 that contained an effective date of July 1, 2012. A corrected opinion and correction notice were recently issued (see links below). E-mail service becomes MANDATORY on September 1, 2012 in civil, probate, small claims, and family law divisions of the trial courts, as well as in all appellate cases. E-mail service in criminal, traffic and juvenile matters is not mandatory until October 1, 2013.

Clerks Reduce Hours of Operation

Effective July 1, 2012, Court Clerks have reduced their public operating hours to 9:00 am – 4:00 pm. Clerks will still be available to support courtroom operations for hearings/trials that begin at 8:00 am or run past 4:00 pm.

SSaaffeettyy Newest Safety Policies at Sea

In the latest move to address concerns over cruise ship safety, two industry groups recently announced new safety policies that go beyond what is already required by international regulations. The Cruise Lines International Association, which represents 26 cruise lines, and the European Cruise Council said that the nationality of every passenger on a ship now must be recorded and made readily available to search and rescue workers if needed.

Another policy specifies 12 key points that passengers will learn during muster drills and emergency instruction. They include: when and how to put on a life jacket; where to find life jackets; a description of emergency signals and what to do if you hear one; where to gather when an emergency signal is sounded; how information will be given in an emergency; what to expect if an evacuation is ordered; instructions about whether passengers should return to their cabin before mustering; and a description of safety systems and features.

In the months since the deadly shipwreck of the Costa Concordia, the trade group previously announced policies that include requiring emergency drills for all embarking passengers before a ship leaves port, having more life jackets on ship than are required by law and limiting access to a ship’s bridge at potentially dangerous times.
