If you have been to the CBS web-site lately, you probably noticed a fresh new look: video, more pictures, and access to lots more information. In the last few months of 2011, CBS welcomed a new Information Tech-nology manager, Martha Hoffman. A native of KC and graduate of Shawnee Mission East HS, Martha received a BA in Communications from Brown University and an MA in Human Relations from the Uni-versity of Santa Monica. She began her career working with children,

eventually gravitating to technology in video teleconferencing sales, copy writing and computer video editing. Martha spent 10 years working in the IT department at Sprint and has expe-rience in web design. In her spare time, Martha is a writer, artist and photographer. She is involved with Toastmasters, currently serving as the Lt. Governor of Marketing for Kansas and Missouri where she assists in club development and retention. As both artist and technocrat, Martha sees the computer as a vehicle

New Look from Web & Scroll - Meet Marthawhere art and technology come together for commu-nication and expression. She hopes to use her skills and experience to help CBS become more accessible on the website and in the Scroll. Martha and Daniel Compo enjoy their life together in Overland Park.

We stand at the shore of the sea and we sing, we cry out, we pour out our emotion - in praise, in awe, in fear. There are perhaps two peak communal experiences which characterize the saga of the Israelites in the Torah: the exodus from Egypt and the experience of God at Sinai. Our

tradition commemorates and sanctifies both experiences in festivals. Both experiences - one of a very physical nature, one spiritual - are accompanied by singing, and by the expression of deep emotion. At the Sea of Reeds, the Israelites sang for joy, while at Sinai, they sang out of fear, looking for another god. Music springs from both the wonderful and the terrible, and on Shabbat Shirah we remember the connection between our emotions and our song. God triumphed at the Sea of Reeds and delivered Israel. And with the power of God comes the outpour-ing of emotion in song: “Az Yashir Moshe...” (Ex. 15:1) On the shore of the sea, led by Moses, the people sang in praise of God, delivered from generations of slavery.

They sang in joy. At Sinai there is song as well, but not as an expression of joy. Moses hears the sound of the people as he is de-scending from Mt. Sinai and says, “It is not the sound of the tune of triumph, or the sound of the tune of defeat; it is the sound of song that I hear” (Ex. 32:18). But the word used for song is not shir, it is annot, a cry of distress. The people were worshiping the golden calf! At Sinai, it was not joy that propelled their music, but fear and frus-tration. Moses had left them alone in the desert after their encounter with God. Sinai was not only the peak spiritual experience; it might have been the most terrifying as well. To let out their emotions, the Israelites had to sing. We may praise God, we may question and rant at God, thank God, or plead with God, but when our heart is connected to our spirit, we will do it in song. It is not always joyful, it is not always loud and rhythmic, and it is not always in unison. But, it always reveals another level of our commitment to Judaism.

Beth Shalom…Board History 101 When my wife, Stephanie, and I joined Beth Shalom 23 years ago, we were new to the Kansas City Jewish Commu-nity. At that point, I knew nothing of what it took to run Beth Shalom. It was all a mystery. I joined the Board in the mid 1990’s. At that time, the Board of Directors had over 140 voting members. It was unwieldy and required the Executive Committee (comprised mainly of officers) to do the actual work while the Board itself mainly voted to support whatever decisions the smaller group made. In 2003, the leadership and the Board made the wise decision to change its structure and reduce the number of voting members to approximately 24. The group became a true “working Board” that required much more time and commitment from its directors. Occasionally, I hear a congregant, who is unhappy with

something at Beth Shalom, accuse the Board of having its “own agenda” or that there is a secret, elite group making the decisions. Nothing could be further from the truth! Our leadership structure is based on committees. Committees are made up of congregants – people who volun-teer their time for countless meetings

and discussions, and hours of research and debate. The work done in the committees is brought to the Board level when decisions need to be made. Those decisions are made by consensus. It’s as simple as that.I am proud to be a part of the group of congregants and staff that serve on committees and/or the Board of Direc-tors. Each of them deserves our thanks. I encourage each of you at Beth Shalom to get involved. You, too, can make a difference!

On Sunday, February 26th, the second in the series of B’nei Mitzvah parent/students programs will be held beginning with tefillot at 9:30. The topic for the day is writing a D’var Torah and will be led by Hazzan Menes. The session will end at noon. A D’var Torah (“a word of Torah”) is a lesson or sermon interpre-ting a text, usually the weekly Torah portion, that can be delivered by anyone.

Parents of B’nei Mitzvah

Each grade level in the Polsky Re-ligious School has at least one special program for parents and students. Fifth graders learn about the holiday of Tu B’Shevat and write their own Tu B’Shevat seder. Parents are invited to participate in this family oriented student led program. For many of the students and their parents, this is the first exposure to the holiday and its rituals. Tu B’Shevat, the New Year for the Trees, dates back to Talmudic times. Many of the customs and traditions are related to the land of Israel and the im-portance of agriculture. In preparation

for the seder, the students incorporate creative writing, stories, dramatic presentations and songs to enhance the learning experience. Included in the seder is the tasting of the five fruits and two grains of foods native to Israel. Emphasis is placed on the environ-ment and the importance of taking care of the earth. Families should see this as a time to do something in the spirit of Tu B’Shevat. Think about planting a garden this year or a new tree or just enjoy the outdoors. In Israel Tu B’Shevat is seen as the start of Spring, so if it is Tu B’Shevat, can Spring be far away for us?

Early in life children learn about sharing. As we involve our children in conversation about others and their needs we have many “teaching moments” to take advantage of. We can include our children in so many fun “giving” activities whether it is at Deanna Rose Farmstead where they can help care for animals, designing cards for sick children in the hospital or working at such places as animal shelters, homeless shelters or Harvesters as a family. A Tzedakah box at home is a regular reminder of our caring. It is a Jewish tradition to give Tzedakah before lighting the Shabbat candles.

Tzedakah How do we teach our kids?

Children love adding coins to the box. They have so many questions and that usually adds to much more dialogue. Kids are sensitive and see needs that many of us overlook. The grocery store is a good place to talk about hunger and pick out food to donate. It is never too early to teach the responsibility of helping others. Let them know that they can make a difference.

Make Purim Music Join the Hazzan for a pre-Purim music class on Thursday, March 1, 7:30-9 pm, in Goldsmith Hall. Get in the holiday mood and learn both traditional and new songs, or share one of your own favorites. Adults and children of all ages are welcome—in costume or not. This would be a great time to try out your new gragger, or bring an instrument of your own to enhance the accom-paniment.
