Torrevieja’s Councillor forTourism, Luis María Pizana, appeared at a press confer-ence last week where hetook stock of the July andAugust tourist figures pub-lished by the city. The figures showed the numberof visitors and consultations therehad been at the municipal tourismoffices, and were based on

increases in energy and waterconsumption, solid waste genera-tion and of course hotel occupan-cy.He said that results were fairlystable, maintaining the levelsenjoyed in recent summersdespite a serious downturn in theeconomic conditions, togetherwith the significant decline in thepurchasing power and the recov-

ery of tourism in North Africa.Despite the doubts there had beena satisfactory tourism demand, once again highlighting the manyattractions and underliningTorrevieja as a tourist destination.Whilst Pizana confirmed theimportance of British andScandinavian tourism to the city, which once again remain themost important in tourist num-bers during this summer, he saidthere had also been a markedincrease in the numbers of Frenchand Russian tourists which, inturn, has resulted in an increase inthe average expenditure frominternational tourists. He said that one of the reasons ofTorreviejas success had been thecommitment of the City to partic-ipate alongside the Costa Blancaat the many different internation-al tourism fairs, especially in theemerging markets of northernEurope. He also consideredimportant the familiarisation tripsto the city of a number of TourOperators from Russia andPoland to see first hand the citysmany cultural and gastronomic

attractions.Torrevieja had done well to main-tain hotel occupancy levels dur-ing the months of July andAugust, at an average of over80%, with peak weekends 90-100%, alongside similar destina-tions in the province as Javea,Denia and Calpe.

A 70 year old man, said to be of British nationality, was found deadin his home at calle Londres on the Orihuela Costa urbanizaciónEl Mirador de los Altos on Tuesday night, after the fire servicewere called to assist in gaining access to his home, following com-plaints from neighbours that the television had been heard con-stantly for some days and there was a strange smell emanatingfrom within.A Russian neighbour had noted unusual noises, including what sound-ed like shouts and screams from the property, but was unable to under-stand the language being spoken. Some days later, with the noise ofthe television failing to subside, the neighbour called the local police, who attended the home, but were unable to raise a response. They inturn called for the fire service to gain access, at which point the life-less body of the resident was found in the bath, naked and badlydecomposed, having apparently died some days earlier. The televisionwas also found to be on with the volume turned up.It is an ever increasing situation that elderly people are left alone anddie without any assistance or having been missed. In The Leader last

year we reported how this phenomenon seems to be growing withmore and more elderly people become isolated from the community, often following the loss of a partner, and without friends or familynearby.

Following data collected in the first aerial survey of the Orihuelamunicipality, as reported was to happen in The Leader previously,it has now been revealed that Orihuela has 12,000 properties whichcan be classed as “illegal”, and not properly registered with theplanning department, and therefore prevented the town hall fromcollecting property tax worth hundreds of thousands of euro. The PSOE councillor for planning, Antonia Moreno, revealed the star-tling statistics this week, which she also states makes, urban planningvery difficult, and that, "There are houses, for instance, on theOrihuela Costa not paying IBI (property tax) and should have paidmore than 800 euro per year, simply because of the location". She continued to explain that, "there are citizens who live in first orsecond line of the beach and pay nothing, but take advantage of theservices funded by those who do pay their taxes."The town hall undertook the project of photographing all propertiesacross the municipality from the air, using the skills of a specialistcompany, which then allowed them to audit exactly what properties

and facilities were actually registered with the planning department, including the amount of space a property may take up, whether thereare swimming pools or winter gardens attached, as well as enablingthe town hall to give the most accurate impression of the considerationof urban planning than it has ever had. Now, the town hall can start the process to claim for both taxes whichare due now, as well as claiming tax for previous years. As previous-ly reported from a press conference launching the 300,000 euroscheme, the town hall would be able to claim retrospective tax for thelast 4 years, and this audit would bring property status up to date, rather than the listing values from 1994, which is what the tax valua-tion had been set at. The evidence collated will also allow for proper-ties to be re-classified into taxable brackets, making a fairer system forall property owners across the entire municipality, albeit at an increasein cost to the individual property owners.Antonia Moreno continued to explain that the collection of IBI fromthose properties not currently registered, and therefore "have not paid"

could exceed several hundred thou-sand euro, but another problemwith these homes is their status onthe Plan General de OrdenaciónUrbana (PGOU), made the proper-ties vulnerable, as the informationon record, and collided with reali-ty, especially in the districts".The councillor also questioned whysome of these properties have beenallowed to remain, when it is clearthat they should have been demol-ished, and yet not a single demoli-tion order had been issued in thelast 25 years. She concluded thatonce the inspection and collation ofdata is finished, then the town hallwould intend to raise a complaintthrough the courts against any indi-vidual who may have ignored theillegality of these homes.

Almost 10,000 euro was donated to theAECC cancer charity last week; the culmi-nation of months of hard work, organisa-tion and tireless fundraising by the localcommunity of San Fulgencio.Sarah Bavington from urbanisation La Marina hasbeen instrumental in organising a series of fundrais-ing events from a golf day, sponsored hair grow andan auction, culminating in a charity football matchagainst the San Fulgencio local police in July. Thematch was the idea of Paul 'Doc' Docherty who wasdiagnosed with cancer towards the end of 2011.Whilst receiving treatment at Torrevieja Hospital,Paul became aware of the tremendous work that theAECC does and decided to throw his support

behind the charity. As a keen footballer he came upwith the idea of a charity football match and not justany match, one against a police team. With the sup-port from the councillor for the urbanisations andthe Town Hall the idea grew momentum and evenresulted in the auction of an official signed Messiframed photo.Sarah said the golf day raised 700, the Messiphoto was auctioned for 560, an auction atAnanda's bar raised 1,400, a sponsored hair growraised 1,200 and Zodiacs bar donated 665. Torrevieja town hall has agreed to pay compen-sation to a driver who claimed that his vehicletyres had suffered damage from being in collisionwith newly installed pavement features on themain Caballero de Rodas street.

Incredibly, the report states that the town halladmits that these elements of improvements tothe streets of the city, do not meet the mandatory

rules regarding pavements and kerb stones. The whole development of these streets has beenentangled in a political and financial mess, afterwhat some claim to have been inferior work startedto crumble, but the contractor disappearing andrefusing to carry out repairs.Although designed to look pleasing, the intermittentraised kerb stones were a nightmare to many a driv-er and pedestrian alike, with many people witness-ing those who stumbled over them, unaware of thedangers and with absolutely no consideration forpeople with impaired vision, as those able sightedstreet users clearly struggled to see them as it is.The town hall has now agreed to pay 200 euro com-pensation to the Madrid resident in compensationfor the damage to his tyres, which may well nowopen up the proverbial flood gates for claims fromother drivers who may have been subject to similardamage, as well as pedestrians who could have suf-fered potentially serious or fatal injuries if theywere to trip and fall into the path of a car, for whichthe town hall would now clearly have acceptedresponsibility.

The President of the Murciaregion, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, has said this week that thenew International Airport ofMurcia, based in Corvera, willbegin operations ,”soon”,because the infrastructure,“is already finished”.He continued to state that once thefinal calibration flights are com-plete, then the airport will be imme-diately available as an operationalairfield, with airlines theoreticallyable to land and take off, within afew months. The politician was speaking on aSpanish radio station and madecomment that this project, "is notwork to be built in a matter ofmonths", nor is any kind of delay asdramatic as might be thought, as infact, the work actually started in2007, whereas now, some five years later, the airport is, nearly com-pleted. He also pointed out that despite speculation of the investment beingdone on something of a whim, the whole concept of the airport firstbegan conception in the 60´s, when the Chamber of Commerce firstmade demands for an airport of this stature, and has developed eversince, in order to meet the demands of the region. He also pointed out that there was an eight year gap in development, when the PSOE government halted the project, but negotiations arestill ongoing with relation to the possible closure of San Javier to pas-senger traffic with the AENA airport authority. He of course accepted that Murcia is already served by an airport atSan Javier, with around 1.5 million passengers, but the airport hasmany operational limitations, due to the fact that passenger trafficshares air and ground space with military operations. The minister

believes that that the priority for San Javier ought to be with militarydevelopments rather than commercial, with the growth of the successof the air academy there and the benefits already recognised throughthe military field. Because of these limitations, it is impossible to provide an adequateservice to passengers from San Javier. For example, in order to fly toMurcia from the capital, Madrid, a passenger would, have to get upat 4 in the morning and take a plane leaving at 6 am to Murcia, andthen there are no more planes until the afternoon to returning toMadrid. Therefore, the president regrets that Murcia San Javier is, not an air-port that can respond to the interests of Murcia, when 80% of passen-ger would be forced to fly to neighbouring Alicante. The need for abigger, more suitable airport is clear and the path is still open for thelaunch of Corvera.

SEX CAN BE BENEFICIAL TO YOUR HEALSEX CAN BE BENEFICIAL TO YOUR HEALTHTHTry that one the next timeyou are trying to encourageyour partner to get busy!Seriously, it has been med-ically proven that the act ofsex is beneficial to youremotional and physicalhealth.Try that one the next time youare trying to encourage your part-ner to get busy! Seriously, it hasbeen medically proven that theact of sex is beneficial to youremotional and physical health. The hormone, testosterone is

released in large amounts duringthe activity which is essential forstrong muscles and bones. Youwill also burn calories and yourbrain will release Oxytocinwhich makes the emotions ofnurturing and affection stronger. So, to summarize the benefits ina nutshell, you get stronger mus-cles, burn calories, and feelingsof love and affection from engag-ing in sex on a regular basis. I cant think of any exercise thatcan do that and it sure wont beas much fun!If you participate in sexual activ-ity on a regular basis it is excel-lent for helping you to maintainyour weight, it burns off calorieswhich also reduces fat stores. You can actually burn similarcalorie totals as you would withweight training, canoeing, danc-ing, or walking. You will alsoexperience an increased bloodflow overall in your body whichhelps your health in all areas andsince it also increases your heartrate it can have cardiac benefitsas well. Good cholesterol isincreased and bad is decreased.Another side benefit from havingsex at bedtime is that it relievesstress and releases sleep inducinghormones that will help you tosleep better. If you are havingtrouble sleeping, maybe youarent getting enough!Sex makes you live longer! Nowtheres a good conversationstarter. But, its true, according tostudies stating that two orgasmsper week could improve your

death rate by as much as 50%compared to people only havingone a month. In addition, yourimmune system is boosted andthe so-called mother hormone,DHEA is released which increas-es cognitive abilities, helps repairand maintain tissues, helps withbone growth, and help your skinto stay looking healthy andsmooth. It sounds like the foun-tain of youth, doesnt it?Due to the release of testosteroneand oestrogens you want to havesex more often. Testosterone isalso the hormone that is essentialin the building and toning ofmuscles. The oestrogens andtestosterone are also the hor-

mones that stimulate a woman towant her partners touch and pen-etration.The hormone, Oxytocin acts torelease endorphins that are natu-ral opiates into the bloodstreamin large quantities which meansthat sexual activity can be usedas an effective pain reliever. If you think about the article thatyou have just read and then thinkabout the primary function of thehuman species, which is thepropagation, nurture and survivalof the species, it should be quiteobvious to you that the procre-ation process has to be benefi-cial, and not detrimental to yourhealth and mental well-being.

Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher andschool inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter inSpain, before moving to the Canary Islands as anewspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sunas a writer and author.

TToo much of aoo much of agood thing?good thing?

“Ooo, lovely! 45 degrees in the shade!”exclaimed our friend, vigorously tapping ouroutside thermometer, as we were desper-ately trying to keep cool during yet anotherheat wave. High temperatures such as thisare great if you are on holiday, have nothingto do but drink refreshing liquids in theshade of a palm tree, or can sit in an air-conditioned room all day. However, all this can get a bit much for normal day-to-day activities, if such extreme temperatures con-tinue for too long. Admittedly, these high temperatures are unusual inthe Canary Islands, and often only last for a fewdays as the hot winds are blown from the Sahara. Yetthe excessive heat is often uncomfortable for many, not only because the heat disturbs sleep, but also forthe associated eye irritations and infections that my

ophthalmic surgeon tells me often accompany thehot winds. Don't misunderstand me, I am not suffer-ing from the usual Brit disease of endlessly com-plaining about the weather; I left that little bundle ofmisery back in the UK many years ago, but merelypointing out that adjustments to extreme tempera-tures do take getting used to.It has been a strange year on an island that rarelysees such wide variations in temperature. A fewmonths ago, temperatures on the island plunged toaround 10 degrees, which some of our elderly neigh-bours told me was the coldest for 30 years, yet a fewdays ago temperatures were in excess of 45 degrees, and higher in parts of the south of the island.During spells of high temperatures, medical alertsare issued by the islands government and, unlikesome holidaymakers who attempt to go trekkingduring periods of excessive heat, often with disas-trous consequences, most people attempt to followthe Canarian way of doing things. Such changes inday-to-day living include getting up early to com-plete necessary physical activities and householdchores before it gets too hot, having a siesta duringthe hottest part of the day (a sensible idea at any timeof the year anyway), not taking the dog for a walkduring the heat of the day, drinking lots of fluids (notalcohol!), as well as shopping in one of the many air

conditioned shopping centres lateinto the evening.Visitors to the island often ask meabout our energy bills and are envi-ous when I tell them that we haveno central heating, other thanswitching on a fan heater occasion-ally during the coldest parts of theyear, or maybe the negligibleexpense of lighting a few candleson a really chilly evening, remembering that it is allrelative to what you are normally used to. However, the flip side of the coin does mean that many homeson the island now have air conditioning unitsinstalled, and these are now used much more fre-quently now than in previous years, when they werea rare sight in all but the most expensive properties. These units are expensive to run, and mean thatwhat is not spent on heating during the wintermonths tends to be spent on air conditioning duringthe summer; so we do not escape high energy billscompletely. Island living means that many of usspend most of our time outdoors. Other than periodsof very low or excessively high temperatures, wetend to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner outdoors and, again, with just a few candles for company, whichalso helps to reduce overall energy consumption.

What about lack of water? is another question thatwould be expats and visitors often anxiously ask.Despite the lack of regular rainfall, sometimesoccurring only for a few days in February in thesouth of the island, I have not known a time whenwe cannot use hosepipes to wash our cars, hose ourpatios or to water the plants in the garden.Underground reservoirs, as well as occasional rain-fall in the mountain areas, together with an endlesssupply of water from the desalination plants, meansthat this is never an issue. After all, we are surround-ed by the stuff. As for washing the car? No, it is fartoo hot for that. Im off for a siesta! If you enjoyed this article, take a look atBarrie’s websites: www.barriemahoney.comand www.thecanaryislander.com or read hislatest book, ‘Threads and Threats' (ISBN:9781843866466) © Barrie Mahoney

‘Mike Probert talks Golf (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). LA MARINA GOLF SOCIETYHere on the Costas golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities forboth tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured theservices of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services toprovide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in con-junction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices toall of our readers and run our golf competitions.

Golf Course Condition

If you play golf here on the Costas during the long summer months youwill find courses in excellent condition with green grass and fast greens,Unfortunately there is a price to pay for the good condition of the coursesand this usually shows itself in the early weeks of September when manyof our local courses look the worse for wear and just why is this? The lastweek in August and first week in September are used by courses to hollowtine the greens and it takes 15-20 days for the greens to recover from thiswork. In addition to this due to the lack of rain during the summer monthsthe courses pay huge amounts of money for water to be pumped onto theircourses but unfortunately the quality of this water varies and in particularthe salt levels in the water and falling night time temperatures can causeproblems particularly on the greens. The result is that the greens, whileputting reasonably well can look brown and patchy and at present Bonalbais an example of this problem. The problem can also appear as similarproblems on fairways and fringes of greens as currently seen at Altorrealand La Peraleja at present. The courses will repair themselves in a fewshort weeks and all they need is some respite from the searing heat andmore than anything else, natural rain water. Take another look at the cours-es towards the end of September and you will really see the difference.

We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readersaffordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but sim-ply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golfprices, many of which are exclusive to us. The deals shown in the table are

BOXERS GOLF SOCIETYSeptember the 5th members of Boxers Golf Society took on the trickyAguilon course near San Juan de los Terreros in an individual Staplefordcompetition. The course looked good and the greens are beginning to comeback into shape. On the day we played only two groups, so some of us indivision two had to play with the big boys in division one.One of the big boys, Brian Mayhew, showed us how to play Aguilon byscoring 43 points, and this off a low handicap. (even lower as I write.) Thismade him the clear winner of group one and overall winner on the day. RoyBishop was runner up in the group with a creditable 35 points whilst PeterDawson was third with 33 points. In group two Adrian Ball took the honours on count back with 33 pointsfrom John Kinch also on 33points. ELITE G.S. AT VILLA MARTIN Saturday 1st September 2012

Today we played on one of our sister courses Villa Martin, an old champi-onship that has seen better days, parts of the course are just worn out andlike all the courses in the area it really needs some prolonged rain to soft-en the ground and encourage some new growth. We played an individual medal format today from the yellow tee plateswhich are almost back on the white tee area's so it was a long test for allour players. Two players, Barry Roehrig and Brian Bevan returned the best score of net73, so a countback of the last nine hole was needed to decide the winner.Following the countback Barry was awarded first place and Brian secondplace. In third place was Jack Simpson with a net 76 and fourth place wastaken by John Stabler with a net 77. Our nearest the pin winners were BrianBevan on the 6th hole, Barry Roehrig on the 13th, Peter Yarwood on the13th and Dave Friedman on the 17th.In our two's competition two were scored today by Barry Roehrig andBrian Bevan on the 9th hole, unfortunately for them hole number 17 wasdrawn from the hat so its our first rollover for several weeks. Our best dressed golfer today was our newest member David Gray. Davidhad a very tough start to his round losing two balls on the first hole andthen nearly losing his buggie as it rolled down the bank of the first fairwayand he had to chase it to stop it running into the tree's!!Welcome to the prize that nobody wants too win David and there will be abottle of wine waiting for you at Monte's bar next Saturday. The Scribe

The first game of the Eurogolf 2012 season took place on 6 Septemberwith 45 members taking part. The winning team with a score of 60.9 was: T Stanley, M Eckersall, FGentilli, Ghost. Second place with a score of 61.4 was D Weedon, CStanley, J Pohl, A Marshall. The Captain wished everyone a good season and advised that his chosencharity for this year would be HAH Costa Blanca. Report by Tony Conwell

The Hubbers once again made the 25 minute journey toone of the area´s most popular courses Roda. Rarelydo you hear of any criticism of this track and this visitwas no exception. The last meeting before the immi-nent IVA increases coincided with a very hot andhumid atmosphere with little wind. Much the same asany summer outing. The Hubbers had the pleasure of numerous visitors, two of which were father and son duo of Gary andHenry Davies. 12 year old Henry plays off 25 andcame in with a very creditable 32 points, whilst dad notto be outdone, made the frame with an ideal 36 playingoff 6. Just the two birdies this time out, one from PaulDurrant on the relatively easy 5th 480 yd Par 5 and theother an excellent effort from Dave Leatherby on the

difficult stroke index one 4th. The 420 yd hole wasswallowed up in two strokes with the remaining 10ftcomfortably put away. Great golf, but he couldnt cap-italise, nevertheless returning a respectable 32 points.Son Shane went 8 points better, off 15, to win the dayand also had the audacity to win a NTP.Next event is on Sunday 9th September, all are wel-come just put your name and deposit down in the Hubwhilst enjoying a pint with the crazy staff. Results: N.T.P: Hole 7 Shane Leatherby, 11 DaveLeatherby, 15 (in two) Dave Collier. THE HUB SPORTS BAR GOLF SOCIETY PAUL DURRANT

A very nice and pleasant warm daysaw 23 members and 3 guests takepart in a Stableford competition at LaFinca which was in decent conditionwith the exception of the greens, which in all fairness, is the same formany of the golf courses this time ofthe year. We just have to accept thattwice a year, some greens might notbe the type we are used to and prefer. The days scoring wasnt exceptionaleither, except for the visitors that did-nt appear to be bothered about thegreens, especially Aaron Clinton whocame in with 42 points and was heardto say that he is used to putting onploughed fields, being Irish! Aaronplayed off of 9 and his name has beennoted for his next visit where the Handicap Secretarywill, undoubtedly, wield the sword. The Silver Division was won by Mick I cant hit 36points Kennedy with a very reasonable 35 points andfollowed up in 2nd place by Bill Whylie who justedged out Pauline Johnson on a countback, both scor-ing 32 points. The Gold Division was a little tighter with CaptainAlan Rickers taking 1st place with a creditable 34points, just one point ahead of Paula Hagart on 33poins who took 2nd place on another countback, push-ing Steve Higgins into 3rd place with both scoring 33points.The Society continues to grow an considering we have

really only been going for some 5 weeks we have 52fully paid up members and must be the fastest growingsociety in this area. We are, of course, open for mem-bership and welcome single players of any gender andcouples, so if you wish to join this merry band ofgolfers, please contact us via the website as shownbelow or by calling the number, also shown below. Our next game is at the fabulous Las Colinas onWednesday 12th September and we do have a coupleof slots left at the amazing prize of 36 includingbuggy, so please feel free to contact us via our websiteat ww.tmgs.org or by calling the match Secretary on966 719 604.

EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUBOn 1st September we had our return game with Indalo, at their place. Thecoach left the Emerald Isle at 10am with Bowlers and their Guests, arriv-ing at Indalo at around 12.30pm to refreshments and drinks before thegame started. Heavy storms and fires around the area had left the groundand greens under water, then covered in ash. Only two days hard work bytheir Club members enabled the game to take place under ideal bowlingconditions on the match day, not too hot with a nice gentle breeze. As ClubCaptain for the day, I did tell the Indalo team that due to upsets early on inthe year we had to re-form and reorganise, and we therefore felt it was agood idea to let them look after the Trophy for the next year, provided theykept it well polished and under twenty-four hour surveillance! Well, theydid keep it as we only had one winning rink, thanks to Bill Hawthorn, LesBath, Ann McDowell and Maureen Jeffs, the final results of both home andaway games being 4 1/2 rinks to Emerald Isle, 11 1/2 rinks to Indalo. Afterour game (score line 115-178) we enjoyed a very good BBQ meal followedby Trifle or Apple Pie & Ice Cream followed by Card Bingo and a Raffle.Shame about the score line but lovely people - just one big, happy family- and we look forward to seeing them all again next year. We arrived homeat around 9.45pm, tired and a little disappointed, after a good, enjoyableday.Bill Allen.

Vistabella Bowls were very pleased to greet and to entertain the Spanishbowls squad last weekend, 1st & 2nd September 2012, when they compet-ed against Federation teams as part of their training and in preparation forthe forthcoming World Championships in Adelaide, Australia inNovember. The National squad were guests of a Valencian Select. The fixture was held at Vistabella over two days, and because there was somuch interest from the Valencian bowlers 20 different players were usedon each day. Conditions were ideal, as it was much cooler than the oppres-sive heat we have had recently. All matches were played very competitively, and although the Nationalsquad won quite convincingly overall, the Valencian men drew all four oftheir sessions. However, the main winner was the camaraderie that was created, so muchso, that the National Manager would like to make it an annual event. Our thanks to all at Vistabella, who provided all the food and drink, formaking us welcome, and to the Umpires and Markers, who did their workso efficiently.John Muldoon, national director of bowls for spain, said it was a verygood weekend Vistabella bowls are strong front runners for 2013Fred Roberts, team manager of the Spanish national squad quoted theorganization by Vistabella was excellent and a credit to bowls in Spain. Ihope the event at the club goes from strength to strength.

Thanks to the Vistabella committee, and in particular to Peter Wright,Competition Secretary and the markers provided by the club

We look forward to hosting the fixture again next year

MATCH FISHING By Terry Screen

This weeks 3rd round match of theWinter League was fished at EdenStretch on the River Segura on the4th September.Fishing this water now makes youfeel like one of Major WingatesChindits hacking your way to thepegs, as the reeds are now so thickand high.It seems that only a few of theAnglers have the inclination to godown to the river in there own timeand clear some of the pegs out. There was a good flow and colouron the river, and there does notseem to be as many snakes about aslast year but there is a lot of 2 to 4inch Terrapins taking the bait andmaking a nuisance of themselves.1st Terry (Swing Em) Screen with11.480kg fishing pole paste andcorn on the feeder2nd Bob (The Major) Rafferty with10.900kg fishing feeder and corn3rd Dave (Yours Truly) Hoare with7.860kg fishing pole bread andcorn. EURONICS THURSDAY DART LEAGUEYour Electrical Shop in Blue Lagoon

The Euronics Thursday Dart League (formerly Imperial Pools) convenedfor their A.G.M. recently at the Rendezvous Bar and despite the majorchange in sponsorship, there were only minor changes to the Rules. The league which has enjoyed continued success since being taken over bythe existing committee of 4 years, once again unanimously voted in thesame committee of Paul Durrant, Derek Kingsbury, Steph Simpson andLinda Cross. The chairman expected the league championship to be asclose in the coming season as the 2011-2012 one, where the outcome wasonly determined on the last game of the season. Several transfers havetaken place during the close season, resulting in Gogarty´s looking likefavourites for the title, with current champions the Meerkats and previouschampions the Bulls possibly looking at only runners up. Busters,Breakaways and the Hub Hyenas will all have a part to play in deciding thechampionship. The chairman concluded his report by thanking Mr. Patrick Spratt ofImperial Pools for their support in sponsoring the league for the past 3years which has sadly come to an amicable conclusion. The chairmanacknowledged the valuable contribution Imperial Pools had made to theleague and wished the company continued success. To replace such asponsor was a difficult task the chairman explained, however after somelengthy discussion with Ms. Debbie Mackleston of Euronics BlueLagoon her company has taken on the role of league sponsor for the com-ing season. The white goods and electrical company would be a perfectpartner for the league, with league members enjoying the best deals aroundsays Ms. Mackleston.Supporting Euronics will be Sunworld, the property sales and managementoutfit based in Los Dolses. Vic Cooper a keen player himself discussed thepossibility of sponsoring with the chairman who accepted Sunworld´ssponsorship of the K.O. Cup. Similarly league members wishing to rent, buy or sell property are encouraged to visit Sunworld´s offices for somegreat offers.Minor rule changes were implemented, with only one change proposed byDerek Kingsbury, who wished the K.O. Cup format to be changed from theexisting best of 7, 1001 6 a side team game to a best of 9 triples 701.Kingsbury explained the team game, whilst a leveller, enabling teams in alow league position to compete against the best, it was time for a changeand also make the final a more exciting event. A vote was taken and thenew format was passed unanimously. The chairman discussed the league accounts, which were in a healthy posi-tion, despite once again distributing a top quality bristle dartboard to eachparticipating team, free of charge. The accounts were passed unanimous-ly.The Breeze Bar (San Miguel) wished to join the league. The chairman hadvisited the venue and explained the bar had an extensive new games room, ideal for the darts league. Breeze Bar was unanimously elected to theleague. The meeting concluded at 12 noon after 1 1/2 hours of convivial discus-sion.The Euronics league commences on September 20th, with all relevant fix-ture lists, contact sheets, rules, AGM minutes and dartboards deliveredearly September.

THADER LEAVE EMPTY HANDEDDESPITE TWO GOAL LEAD

Almoradi .......3 Thader .......2The first local derby and it should set the scene. From the first corner Adriano had a good chancefor the visitors but shot wide. A good opening runby Quino was repeated at the other end by Pedro, again no finish but good, attacking football. Almoradi were playing the long ball game (shades ofWimbledon). A long cross ball found Juan who shot across Dani to makeit 1-0 to the visitors. Both sides were missing passes although the game was very watchable. With the long ball the lino needs to be aware of the offside but he seems tobe unable to keep up. Up to now the ref has managed to give a yellowevery 7 mins.Pomers then had to leave the field with, what looks like, a hamstring

injury which could have a long term affect. A spec ball by Marcos was hitwide then the other end by Pablo.Pazos had made some good saves to keep Thader in front and then with agood run Juan beat the off side and fired Thader into a 2-0 lead. Due to aninjury to the lino Almoradi got on level terms through Pedro and Malbo intime added on and, despite trailing for much of the half, it was the homeside who went in with their tails up.Early in the 2nd period Adrian was unlucky not to spring the offside trapbut both linos have been found wanting with their calls. The problemseemed to be that Thader were playing too close to each other and thatmade for a lack of space.Almoradi were moving the ball with much more authority and Thader werecalled upon to defend well to keep them at bay. The Thader defence wasopened up again but Pedro shots wide, however moments later he wasallowed to break free and clinically makes it three .Thader were now physically wilting and running out of ideas. As lastSunday the opposition seem to be quicker and fitter. Alberto needs to workon this in training and to encourage his forwards to cause more problemsup front.Late in that game Thader squander to chances to rescue a point but missedthem both. Two seasons ago I named this ref the whistler and he has notchanged (whoops, welcome to a new season)Next week at home. The new fixture list should be available and seasontickets will also be on sale.

CORDOBA .......0 ELCHE .......1 Yes, four wins from four games now mean that since Almeria lost 3 0 at Sabadell Elche really are cleartop of league division 2A, with a maximum 12 points:ten goals for, and four against, and this was the firstclean sheet this season! Other notable local resultswere Real Murcia losing for the first time 3 2 atRecreativo Huelva, but at the Rico Perez in Alicantethe beleaguered coach Juan Mandia staved off calls forhis head by Hercules beating Girona 2 -1 for their firstpoints to move them off the bottom.Elche went to Fortress Archangel in front of a good-sized almost partisan crowd of 10,695, although thefaithful 200 travelling fans were well-rewarded fortheir long trip. Cordoba hadnt been beaten at home foralmost a full year (they have now) since Deportivowon there last October. Oh, and if you like your stats,in the last 15 matches between the teams at TheArchangel, Cordoba have won six, five were drawn, and Elche have won four. Make that five now For the Illicitanos left back and dead ball specialistAlbacar was back for an otherwise unchanged Elcheteam. They kicked off in their unfamiliar blue and redaway kit because Cordoba, like near Andalucian neigh-bours Real Betis play in green and white stripes. It did-nt appear to make the slightest difference as theIllicitanos swept into an early lead after only nine min-

utes. New boy this season Fidel, as usual working welldown the left crossed for Coro in space. His shot wasparried by Alberto in the Cordoba goal, leaving newstriker Carles Gil to acrobatically score his third thisseason and take him to joint top of the 2A goalscoringcharts (known as the Pichichi in Spain). Twenty minutes later he was taken off injured, replaced by this years supersub, ex-regular hard-working midfielder Mantecon. This enforced movetook the edge off the Illicitanos attack, but stifled thehome sides attempts to redress the scoreline. WithElches dynamic new full back Suarez temporarily offthe field boot- changing, his man Platino just failed toconnect at the far post, and that was the last real chanceCordoba were to enjoy during the first half or thematch. The second half continued in the same vein, withCordoba having slightly more possession, but theIllicitanos looking more dangerous on the counterattack. Excellent new Elche coach Fran Escriba sensi-bly rang the changes with wide left/midfielder Palancareplacing Fidel on 63 minutes and Berenger again sub-stituting for Albacar with 15 minutes left; after 4 min-utes injury time the game ended 0 -1 to Elche, effi-ciently retaining their top place.Next Saturday evening at the mighty Martinez Valerostadium at 6 pm Elche entertain Sporting Gijon from

Asturias, who have to date only one draw from three;but those type of games were? the banana skinsthat Elche have previously slipped up on. But hey, thistime half the team mainly the attacking half - werenthere last year, so have no memory of that season thatstarted so well, and finished so abjectly. That was thenand this is now! must be the 2012/13 message, and atthis early stage of the season Elche are flying - they

took a few weeks to get going last year. So: two points clear of second place Villarreal, theIllicitanos are going so well its almost worrying. Letsjust enjoy it from our lofty position up top, gazingdown thoughtfully on the rest of league 2A. Mustntlook up yet much too far to go! But hey the view isgreat!Mucho Elche!

Santa Pola CF ......1 Horadada CF ......0A ninety second minute Alfonso goal put paid to any Horadada hopes ofan unbeaten start to the new season. Up until that moment, the visitorslooked really good value for a point out of a game from which, for longperiods, the only clear-cut winner appeared to be the sweltering tempera-ture. Santa Pola probably shaded the first half with Horadada well on topduring the second period in a game of few chances. In the end a single goalwas enough for the hosts, who, whilst considerably better than last weekat Campello, still seem to be something of a work in progress.A disappointing crowd of barely two hundred people weren't given muchat all to cheer as both sides worked hard, to little effect, to create openings.Ten minutes in, Botella picked up the ball just inside the Horadada half andwent on a surging run before letting fly from the edge of the box, a finesave then followed as Alex Sarria saw the shot all the way to turn it roundhis post for a corner. At the other end, the eye catching Robles helped him-self to a rare stray pass by Chiqui, and really should have done far betterthan slap his shot into the side-netting from close range. Thus, the first halfpattern was set.On a playing surface that, unusually for Santa Pola, didn't appear to havehad a very good summer, poor finishing undermined the sterling efforts ofboth sets of hard working mid-fielders. Arrazola snatched at a Chiqui cor-ner, producing nothing but an embarrassing air shot before Alfonso exhib-ited poor technique, for him anyway, to smash the loose ball well over. Thesecond noteworthy save of the half saw Pepitiu get down well to deny Titiwho took advantage of poor Santa Pola defending to send in a well placedsnap shot. Half-time, honours even and no goals.

A positive statement of attacking intent by Horadada coach AntonioPedreño saw him make a triple substitution with less than ten minutes ofthe second half played. On came defender Eloy with forwards Vardan andthe live-wire Ensa replacing Samu and Jose Maria. The changes energisedHoradada who then embarked upon their best spell of the match, forcingthe Santa Pola back four to look sharp on a couple of occasions. For theirpart, Santa Pola looked somewhat lethargic as the mid-day heat began totake it's toll. Botella, clearly flagging, was hauled off along with MarioLopez as Pola coach Antonio Ruvira sent on the fresh legs of Saurin andMay.

On a rare foray into the Horadada box, Saurin forced Alex Sarria into asuperb save, low down with his left foot with just a couple of minutes ofnormal time remaining. Normally at this point in a match, tension on thefield transmits itself to those watching and a sense of urgency takes over, today, though, not a bit of it and the few who bothered to make the effortremained largely subdued. Subdued that was until Alfonso broke the dead-lock, and Horadada hearts, deep into time added on.Horadada captain Campillo, a man as rugged as a West Country farmer, had marshalled his defensive troops brilliantly all game, yet one momentof hesitancy late in the game was to cost them dear. Failure to adequatelyclear a loose ball in their own box was seized upon by the lurking Alfonsowho lashed in the winner from close range to secure all three points, twoof which definitely weren't deserved, for Santa Pola. The result was tough on Horadada who more than matched Santa Pola forwork rate and enterprise, a point apiece would have been a much fairerresult. Next week, Santa Pola head west to take on an Alcoyano B aidewho pipped them to the third play-off place last season and Horadadaentertain Pinoso at the Ikomar.
