In the mid 1980s a group of people on this site had a dream to start a college to honour Jesus and to see children grow holistically The Senior Pastor was Chris Peterson and his team believed that Jesus had given them the responsibility to walk in faith to establish what we now know as Brisbane Christian College At each stage

of the Collegersquos history there has been faith and obedience by our Senior Pastors and Principals

In 2007 another dream was birthed when our Church and College leadership started the new building program that our children and teachers now enjoy Godrsquos word tells us lsquowithout a vision my people will perishrsquo As I reflect upon the foundation of our College I see an unwavering faith in Christ and a prayerful commitment to support our children in reaching their potential in a Christ-centered community

In my life I have had several people who believed and challenged me to dream My Year 10 Maths Teacher and School Tennis Coach Ross Macdonald and private tennis coach Mal Murphy continually challenged me to train hard sacrifice for delayed gratification

and to grow in self discipline My family saw the potential that was within my life and consistently encouraged me to not accept mediocrity but to dream strive and plan for success Twenty-six years ago I asked Jesus Christ into my life and since that day Jesus has been speaking into my life to become all that HE created me for

Your College supports and encourages every child to dream As our team inspires our children to love Jesus and equips them with new skills and abilities we will see them achieve their Christ-given future

In Jeremiah 29 11 the Lord God speaks to HIS people through Jeremiah who states lsquoHe has a plan to prosper them not to harm them plans to give them a hope and a futurersquo

In this issue of The Flame enjoy reading how your children are making the most of their opportunities in our community surrounded by a host of encouragers

My God richly bless you

Dreams schemes and ideas I love them The future is bright and full of possibilities Every time I read my Bible I am reminded that God created

sustains and orders all we see He saw the world when there was nothing then spoke it into being Ephesians 320 reminds me that He is able to do more than I could think or imagine Imagine that Proverbs 2911 reminds me that the plans He has for His kids are to give us a hope and a future

My greatest joy as a parent is to see my sons stepping into their future with

confidence believing God and dreaming big As a leader my greatest privilege is to empower others to unlock the dream that God has placed into their heart and to step confidently into their God destiny Ephesians 210 reminds us that we are Godrsquos workmanship Purpose-built for God sized plans Wow

Letrsquos lift our expectations and activate our faith ndash because faith is the substance of things hoped for (Hebrew 111)

We have all at sometime in our life had a dream whether it is for a career or even just for a change in lifestyle What actually drives our dream Is it the people around us Is it the support that is shown to us Or is it our self-desire to achieve success Personally I would say lsquoyesrsquo to all of those questions because throughout my journey at Brisbane Christian College I have personally experienced support from the students and staff around me and have developed the self-desire to achieve

This year I secured a School-based Apprenticeship as a butcher It is a demanding and skilful job and I feel a sense of pride that my employer saw skills and passion in me and was willing to give me a go The rotation of four weeks at school and four weeks in the workplace that the Pathway of Excellence Apprenticeships program uses has

been an excellent way for me to gain greater skills and techniques as an apprentice - much more than I would have doing a lsquoone-day-a-weekrsquo work experience program I cannot wait to get back into the butcher shop and improve the skills that I have learnt I have a dream of being an excellent butcher and it has started now with me ndash learning to be the best apprentice I can be

The Wisdom of YouthWe received words of profound wisdom from the mouths of our youth during the recent Speech Assembly Twelve speakers who had excelled in their respective House competitions took to the main stage to share their thoughts on the topic lsquoGood Advicersquo with the entire Secondary School as their audience

The advice that was offered varied from the wisdom of making good decisions while you are young (Jason Caudery) to the profound lsquoDonrsquot ask a cannibal to make you a sandwichrsquo (Vivienne Cowburn) Many students took the opportunity to encourage others in their faith or exalted us to face all challenges in life with lsquoprayer and Bible readingrsquo (Daniel Wilson) Hamish Robertson wanted to remind individuals to lsquoKeep calm and carry onrsquo and certain teachers lsquoNot to burn the candle at both endsrsquo Finally the Wizard of Oz (Solomon Ashton) made an encore performance reminding us that the only way to guarantee everything would be ok would be if we blindly followed his advice

Now all that remains is putting all that good advice into practice

Congratulations to the Speech Assembly winners

Jailhouse RockThere was not a seat to spare as Brisbane Christian College Primary students rocked the Church Auditorium in the 2013 Musical Jailhouse Rock

The Celeste Clydesdale Production gave our Primary School students the opportunity to learn and tell the Christian message of the power of prayer and the freedom that comes from being reborn in Christ

After many hours of rehearsal four spectacular performances were presented to our College community The scene was set as the audience passed through the camping grounds in the Church foyer and then on into the Auditorium our camping site The stage equipped with a chimney cosy fireplace and comfy chairs set the scene for the camp dining room

Filled with excitement all Primary students had the opportunity to perform on the stage through song dance and drama Moments spent on stage provided memories for our children to look back on for many years and makes the work required well worth the while

A big thank you goes to those who laboured behind the scenes to bring the production together for our College For those of you who viewed the performance I am sure you will agree that they all performed wonderfully well

Pre-Prep Fatherrsquos Day MorningThis term we celebrated Fatherrsquos Day with a special activity morning After listening to a presentation of songs we have been learning our dads were very excited to help their children build and design a special racing car out of lollies and biscuits To finish off our morning the dads joined their children on a treasure hunt through the playground to find their special handmade Fatherrsquos Day gifts This was a great bonding experience for our families and was a great way for our dads to experience life in our Pre-Prep classrooms

Mrs Julie NusseyPre-Prep Teacher

Prep Fatherrsquos Day BarbequeOn Friday 30 August all three Prep classes walked to a nearby park on Lillian Avenue where we were able to celebrate Fatherrsquos Day with our dads The children enjoyed morning tea and a play in the playground while our fathers relaxed with a sausage sizzle and cool drink Then the fun and games began

In our first game the fathers and children played a role-play game In this the children helped Dad enact some of his regular chores from home Then our dads had a turn at being Picasso Resting their page on top of their head (so they could not see their work) they were to illustrate their child This produced some comical results Our final game was a scavenger hunt This was a lovely time for the children and fathers to work together finding treasures around the park

Prizes were awarded for the games before the children presented their fathers with the gifts they had lovingly prepared in class It was then time to pack up before heading back to school A fun morning was had by all

Music ConcertlsquoBest concert yetrsquo lsquoThe standard was so highrsquo lsquoWhat a wonderful eveningrsquo

These were some of the many comments that were heard after this yearrsquos Music Concert In a flurry of nerves and excitement musicians of all ages and experience prepared to delight entertain and inspire their audience in a wonderful mixture of choirs bands ensembles and solos This year saw over 250 students rise to the challenge with some performing in as many as five areas Performers ranged from students who had been learning for just a few weeks to those who have finished all their exams

Our students gave a wide variety of performances from the life and energy of the Multicultural Choir singing Waka Waka by Shakira to the stirring rendition of Satiersquos Gnossienne by Lachlan Doedens on the piano from the old favourite Tomorrow sung by Jocelyn Waters to the beautiful Greensleeves played on the guitar by Toyin Osunkoya

Our students all worked hard and made their families proud It has been a delight to work with these students to see their confidence grow through these opportunities and to see the level of performances steadily increase If 2013 can be this exciting just imagine what is in store for us in 2014

College Fete This year we were blessed to have a beautiful sunny day at Brisbane Christian Collegersquos fete Over 3000 parents children and guests visited our College There was much to see and do many performances face painting rides show bags stalls and classroom displays Our auction was a huge success and raised approximately $7500 and showcased Mr Morrisonrsquos auctioneering skills

In total our fete raised nearly $17000 which will go towards a new college bus I would like to take this opportunity to thank the fete committee who assisted in the planning and worked with us on the day of the event to help make it a successful fun day A big thanks also goes to Life Church who lent us their jumping castle for the day and of course many thanks to all the staff and students

Once again our College was visited by students from Japan for a two-week study tour in July This has become a yearly event and is now a much anticipated cultural experience for our College students

This year we had twenty-five students aged fifteen and sixteen as well as a teacher and a tour escort They came to us from Sano High School in Osaka Japan Many of our College families opened up their homes to allow these visitors to become a part of their lives for the twelve days This proved to be a wonderful experience for all which was evident by the many tears and hugs on the morning they were farewelled

During their two weeks of lsquoAussie Schoolrsquo the Japanese students enjoyed learning more English and conversing with their school buddies and their many new friends They made a brave presentation to the Primary and Secondary Assemblies about their favourite things in Japan They also enjoyed an entertaining display of Aboriginal Culture and learnt about Australian money animals food debating verbs and sentence structure among many other things Interestingly one of their favourite times of the day was morning tea as they donrsquot have this in their school day in Japan

They were such a wonderful bunch of enthusiastic young people and both Mrs Di Fidler (Tour Coordinator) and myself thoroughly enjoyed being their lsquoteachersrsquo while they were here The farewell party was great - they sang a beautiful Japanese song and performed some Japanese comedy which was really funny If you want to see that next year I recommend you get involved and offer to be a host family Itrsquos a very rewarding experience for all

As the July holidays drew to a close a group of Senior Brisbane Christian College students were found to be actually counting down the days with anticipation Leaving behind the beautiful Queensland weather we landed in Christchurch New Zealand to be greeted by a very brisk -3degC The students took to the ski slopes in some of the best snow conditions in twenty years The trip had its usual highlights of spills and thrills spills as students learned to control these strange instruments strapped to their feet and thrills as they experienced their first chairlift ride a trip on the Waimak jet boat and experienced travelling on a Haglund vehicle which was used as a primary source of transport in Antarctica

The highlight every year of this trip is seeing the students experience so many things for the first time lsquofirstsrsquo associated with travel moving through customs boarding an international flight exchanging money and adjusting to new time zones Then there

were those firsts associated with skiing - the first drive up to the ski area of Mount Hutt the first feeling of lsquoslidingrsquo down a slope the first time being lifted off the ground and whisked up the mountain on one of the chairlifts

My favourite firsts however is escorting students to the top of The Summit chairlift seeing their faces and hearing the audible intake of breath as we reach the top and see a 360deg panorama of the mountain range and then the excitement as they successfully travel the full length of the resort and proclaim that they have done it These experiences are what make this trip so worthwhile Words and photographs on a page cannot begin to capture what these students get to experience in a week As Mr Hooker likes to say lsquoSome things in life just canrsquot be Googledrsquo

Primary District Athletics CarnivalThe Primary District Athletics Carnival was held on two Fridays 26 July and 2 August at Col Bennett Park in Algester A complete team of almost thirty excited students represented the College in various events over the two-day carnival For many it was their first interschool athletics carnival leading to a lot of nervous energy

It did not take long for our team to show the other schools that we would be a formidable opponent We achieved top three placings in some of the early heats including some convincing wins by our girls in the 100m Individual congratulations must go to Ruby Rough (100m) Amy Ike (100m 200m amp long jump) Ethan Clinckett (800m amp discus) and Amelia Finger (discus) who were all selected in the Sunnybank District Team to attend the Regional trials later in the month Amelia and Ethan also beat their own College records in discus Along with these outstanding individual performances and the rest of the team the College posted our best finish ndash placing second overall in the C Division schools after winning the Most Improved title last year

Thank you to Mr Steven Liu and Miss Rachel Fooks for managing the team and working as officials and to the parents and families at the carnival The support was greatly appreciated by each of our athletes

Mr Matthias Allen-Ankins Sports Coordinator

Secondary CSAQ Athletics CarnivalThe Secondary Christian Schoolsrsquo Athletics Carnival was held on the bright and sunny Tuesday 20 August at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre The largest athletics team we have ever assembled represented the College in the Track and Field competition For some it was their first opportunity to wear the Collegersquos new athletics singlets

Led by Dr Mikhail the Brisbane Christian College section in the stands was certainly the loudest with great encouragement and support throughout the day

Teanna Fujii Mark Gallman Ashanti Garrawurra Grace Ike Rocky Johnston Helen Reda Caleb Sadler Corbin Sylk and Joseph Thompson each finished in the top five overall for various events and another ten College records were also broken On top of these great individual results our relay teams were outstanding with three teams finishing on the podium

Thank you to Dr Mikhail for supporting our students so much that her voice was hoarse by the end of the day

Brisbane Christian College sent three AFL teams to Gala Day Itrsquos been a number of years since the College was represented in AFL at this age level The Junior Boys (Years 4 to 6) had a fairly solid start and they were unfortunate to lose This was followed by two more losses but for a team with a majority of players who had not played AFL competitively before they worked hard as a team in spite of a heavy final loss

The Junior Girls across the same year groups fared much better They had a convincing 52-1 victory in their first game and then added to that in the second with another win (72-12) The final game was against a team who were also undefeated Our girls took an early lead but were soon pegged back and slipped to one

point behind before finally kicking on to a twelve point victory The girls all played their part and enjoyed their games

The Senior Boys (Years 6 amp 7) had a similar experience to the Junior Boys They played some good football but were not able to secure the victory that their hard work deserved They came close in two of their three games and individually improved across the team

The students were eagerly looking forward to their next Gala Day at the end of Term 3 for the opportunity to improve their results

A Topsy-Turvy Kind of Day

On a blustery and hot August day our girlsrsquo soccer team travelled to the playing fields at Wecker Road Mansfield to compete in the Brisbane Christian Schools Girls Soccer competition

The day got underway with an outstanding team effort by the Junior Girls in a 3-0 win over Parklands Christian College The teamwork and lsquosolid as a rockrsquo backline were very impressive and gave the team great confidence

The Open Girls were undermanned from the beginning of the day but banded together in their first match against Northside Christian College in a gritty and courageous effort

The Junior Girls took their confidence into another win (2-0) over Calvary Christian College in a hard-fought match while the Open Girls put in a heroic performance that resulted in a loss to Westside Christian College Under duress for the large majority of match time Ana Garrawurra was named lsquoPlayer of the Competitionrsquo for her outstanding display in goals to deny the opposition time after time

The Junior Girlsrsquo team then played a tough Westside team in their final game where a win would cement the championship In a

tense match where both teams had numerous shots on goal Indiah Collings put a powerful shot into the corner of the goal to give the team a 1-0 lead just before half-time After a couple of minor injuries in the second half the girls finished the match with ten players in a tremendous effort to keep the opposition scoreless

I was a very proud Sports Coordinator at the end of the day with our Junior Girlsrsquo team who were undefeated across their three matches but also with the tenacious effort and lsquonever say diersquo attitude of the Open team

Mr Matthias Allen-Ankins Sports Coordinator

BCS Girls Soccer

The Brisbane Christian Schools (BCS) Soccer competition was held on Monday 5 August at Mitchelton Football Club This event was particularly significant with the unveiling and inaugural use of the new sports jerseys for Brisbane Christian College representative teams

Looking the part the boys competed with the intensity and tenacity expected of a Brisbane Christian College team The open boys fought through some hot conditions and various players battled cramps to come away with some narrow losses and a draw in their pool matches The heart to compete for each other was a real highlight as the boys continued to give it their all in the face of adversity

The Junior Boysrsquo team was a standout team of the competition and went through their pool matches undefeated After being dominant right across the park they came up against a tough Westside team in the

semi-final where they withstood attacking raid after attacking raid Unfortunate to have a couple of goals disallowed from offside calls the regulation time ended in a 0-0 draw leading to a penalty shoot-out In the tense shoot-out the boys finished the competition in third place after a 4-3 defeat

A special thank you to Mitchell Carter who refereed skillfully throughout the day Terrific effort boys

BCS NetballOn the same day as the boysrsquo BCS Soccer competition two of our girlsrsquo teams competed in the netball competition Lacking the experience of some of the opposing teams our girls had to rely on their attitude and effort While the results didnrsquot fall our way the girls are to be commended for the way they competed game after game and displayed great improvement throughout the day with more positive results

Despite the challenge the girls faced they should be proud of their consistent effort and sportsmanship It was also a display and reminder of the importance of repetition practice and experience to achieve success and ultimately achieve your dreams

Discovering your DreamsEvery student has God-given gifts that are waiting to be discovered and developed It is in the Primary School that this journey of discovery begins

Recently the Primary School staged their annual musical in which all of our 333 Primary students performed on stage Why do we

work to give each child this opportunity Without the experience our children are not able to discover their individual strengths and passions Those among our older students who have participated in past musicals and have discovered their love for performance eagerly line up for the auditions each year As we watch our students from Prep through to Year 6 perform on stage it is exciting to see growth in confidence and ability because of the opportunity given each year

The Instrumental Music Program gives many of our Primary School students the opportunity to discover their gifts and to set them on a path to discover a dream Our Junior String Ensemble demonstrates that we have many students with excellent talent Added to this are our three Primary School choirs who each week demonstrate their love for singing and performing These children grow their dream by performing at special school events and weekly chapels

Our desire is for all students to achieve their dream academically We support our students who need extra tuition in class as well as in our after school tutoring program in which we presently have fourteen students each with a personal tutor Students who excel academically have opportunities to discover and grow their dreams In several subject areas our talented academic students are tested against other Australian high-achieving students in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools

Our Speech Assembly is another event that gives every student the opportunity to be on stage performing a verse speaking item with their class Without the experience how can the dream be discovered

Mrs Laraine Tanzer Head of Primary School

Equipping to AchieveDriving your DreamsNever more so than now have we been as intentional and purposeful in seeing the dreams and aspirations of our young people come to fruition The benefits of our Pathway of Excellence Apprenticeships Pathway becomes so clear as I speak to students who are

about to graduate knowing that a career path is already in their grasp These are students who have grown in character and tenacity through the journey of tasting a number of vocations meeting the challenges of being in workplace and ultimately securing a position They are surely more confident and better placed to face the years ahead

Likewise our Academic Pathway students are looking toward all that further tertiary studies has in store for them It has been my absolute privilege to have been engaged in discussions in recent weeks with all Year 12 students regarding their final weeks of school focussing on ensuring that all is in place for them to finish strongly and graduate having achieved their best possible outcomes All students outlined their goals for further study and strategies to see measures in place to see them realised

Our College has in place systems but far more importantly people who support encourage disciple counsel instruct and journey with our students day to day with the deliberate heartfelt desire to drive your childrenrsquos dreams to their God-ordained destination

Building their DreamsWhen little children are growing up they often talk about becoming firemen nurses doctors lawyers and vets with all sorts of dreams and hopes for their future I am always asking my

students in Secondary lsquoWhat do you want to do when you leave schoolrsquo and I find that there are just as many different answers as with the little ones but there are some who are just discovering where their talents lie

I love working at Brisbane Christian College because we are blessed with so many opportunities to provide young people with the guidance they are looking for There are countless moments within our College to inspire and equip our young people to achieve all that God has called them to be

This year there have been trips to the outback of Queensland Canberra New Zealand for skiing Girraween National Park for outdoor education Mt Tamborine for the Year 56 camp and countless excursions and field trips

Our students have also had a great deal of success on the sporting field It was a great pleasure of mine to coach a girlsrsquo team to undefeated success at a Brisbane Christian Schools Touch Football carnival Your children are such an inspiration You should be proud of their tenacity and determination on the sporting field There is never any doubt that our competition remembers playing against a Brisbane Christian College team

There are also many opportunities for your students to shine in the cultural arena Our teams represented the College with pride in the recent debating competition and without a doubt the Senior College Musical this year was the best ever

Brisbane Christian College students dare to dream and it is a humbling honour to be part of the team that is travelling with them on this part of their journey

Mr Gordon HookerHead of House ndash Bernall

ChaplaincyStrength | Purpose | WorthTerm 3 has been packed with many highlights including spending morning tea and lunch times with students of all ages leading the Secondary School Chapel Band speaking at Primary School Chapel seeing young people respond to having a relationship with Jesus and along with our school counselor Loris Henry launching our newest program lsquoShinersquo with the Year 7 girls

In launching the Shine program we have been looking at three fundamental areas of growth - that we are STRONG we are born ON PURPOSE for a purpose and that WE ARE WORTH IT

This is not only something that can be applied to the girls of Year 7 at Brisbane Christian College but to our wider College community

The Bible tells us that God has a future and a hope planned for us and driving our dreams is all a part of the outworking of Godrsquos plan for our lives

Jeremiah 2911 lsquoFor I know the plans I have for yoursquo says the Lord rsquoThey are plans for good and not for disaster to give you a future and a hopersquo

Driving our dreams is all about understanding that God gives us strength that He gives us purpose and acknowledging that WE ARE WORTH IT

Equipping to Achieve Schoolyard BlitzTerm 3 Schoolyard Blitz was our best blitz of the year so far The weather was a perfect winterrsquos day and we had a great turnout of parents and children to help improve the face of the College

We transformed a storage room into a classroom ready for our Japanese students who visited recently We had dads that quickly became painters and did a fantastic job of some of our bag racks and the painting of our new storage room floor Our lsquoArsquo team of mums and kids cleaned classrooms from top to bottom in three of our buildings My staff and I were very impressed and appreciated the amount of hard work that was completed in a matter of hours

It was a great day overall and our College is looking better and stronger because of the consistent commitment from our community Thank you

Mr Matt BanksFacilities Manager

Each year the students at Brisbane Christian College in Years 3-12 have the opportunity to participate in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) This is a widely-respected and utilized assessment program organised and conducted by the University of New South Wales The purpose of encouraging our students to take part in these tests is to give our high achievers a chance to shine on a wider stage than just in our College

This year seventy-two of our students took part in the Computer Skills Science Writing Spelling English and Mathematics

tests Some students elected to sit for all of the tests whereas others decided to just enjoy the competition in the area of their strengths It is hoped that participation in these tests will assist students to feel pride in their academic prowess Each student will receive a Certificate of Participation and to date five Distinctions and thirteen Credits have also been awarded to our students As further results come in we anticipate more of our students will shine with high results

Dreams schemes and ideas I love them The future is bright and full of possibilities Every time I read my Bible I am reminded that God created

September 2013

September 2013

I was a very proud Sports Coordinator at the end of the day with our Junior Girlsrsquo team who were undefeated across their three matches but also with the tenacious effort and lsquonever say diersquo attitude of the Open team

Our Speech Assembly is another event that gives every student the opportunity to be on stage performing a verse speaking item with their class Without the experience how can the dream be discovered

about to graduate knowing that a career path is already in their grasp These are students who have grown in character and tenacity through the journey of tasting a number of vocations meeting the challenges of being in workplace and ultimately securing a position They are surely more confident and better placed to face the years ahead

September 2013

September 2013

In launching the Shine program we have been looking at three fundamental areas of growth - that we are STRONG we are born ON PURPOSE for a purpose and that WE ARE WORTH IT

In launching the Shine program we have been looking at three fundamental areas of growth - that we are STRONG we are born ON PURPOSE for a purpose and that WE ARE WORTH IT
