The Landfall: JANUARY 2010 JANUARY 2010 JANUARY 2010 JANUARY 2010 Happy New Year to everyone! I hope everyone is ready to continue mak- ing Hampton Roads Power Squadron “Shine” again in 2010. Thank you to our HRPS members for all your hard work in 2009. We had a great ending to 2009 by hosting thirty veterans from the Hampton VA Medical Center at our Christ- mas Party. This was a great success and so rewarding for all the members in attendance. You can find pic- tures from the party in this edition of the Landfall. Our members have completed another outstanding year with many hours of hard work and it shows in the amount of Merit Marks Hampton Roads Power Squadron has received this past year. A listing of the 19 mem- bers who received Merit Marks appears within this issue. Congratulations for a job well done! We also need to start making plans for this year’s activities. There is a 2010 Squadron Activity Sur- vey included in this month’s newsletter. Please take time to complete this sur- vey and bring it to our next meeting or mail it to me. It is that time of year again!!!

As the new year begins we again need to look forward to what we want to accomplish throughout

the new year and what events will assist us in accomplishing our goals. At the February business

meeting we need to start making plans and establishing dates for the upcoming events for 2010.

This needs to be a coordinated calendar that will encompass our social activities, boating education

classes, meetings, rendezvous, district events, boat shows, and whatever else we can get a head

start with planning on.

On the following page are several ideas for possible rendezvous for the summertime. So please

come to the February meeting with ideas and inputs on the upcoming year.

TO BE ANNOUNCED - Eastern Shore Workshop

The purpose of the State Boating Instructor Workshop & Certification is to certify USPS and Auxiliary Instructors and also marine dealer personnel and other boaters who are graduates of a NASBLA-Approved boating course. Those who additionally have the necessary boating & instructor experience and who are not currently state certified instructors. It is also to refresh the existing state instructors on state procedures, available materials, etc. The Workshop will provide the latest information on the implementation procedures relating to the boating education law.

If one of your USPS or Auxiliary instructors is not now a certified state instructor, please urge them to attend. This also applies to others who have the necessary boating and teaching experience. State certified hunter education instructors, who are graduates of a NASBLA-Approved boating course, are most welcome. Those who attend will be recommended to DGIF for State Certification. If a USPS/Aux member is in training to be an instructor, urge them to attend and receive credit for the Workshop. This will allow them to be eligible for state certification as soon as they receive their USPS/Auxiliary instructor qualification.

Certified state instructors (even if not Aux/USPS instructors!) garner the benefits of travel mileage, liability coverage, and State activity awards when supporting (and reporting to the state) any State, USPS, and Auxiliary NASBLA approved boating education courses as well as for boat shows, boating safety presentations, etc.

Please contact me if you have any questions.
