Principal’s Update: What did I miss? I was at a conference for a few days last week and when I got back, there was some catching up to do. I go through the paperwork on my desk, meet with Mr. Schalde, speak with counselors, teachers and students, and spend a few extra hours trying to make up what I missed. Since the advent of the smartphone, however, I find I’m not as behind on what is going on at school as I would have been if I had been completely out of touch. Thanks to email, text, and the internet, I can keep up on much of the work of running the school even when I’m not there. When our students are gone, they often seem to not know what to do in order to catch up. They face the same struggles as I do when they are gone: Paperwork piles up, important conversations are missed or delayed, and they have much to do when they return. Fortunately for our students, it is easier than ever to stay on top of student work when they are gone. Just about every teacher at our site has a homework link available through the school website, and many teachers have their own web pages where they will post handouts, study guides and even lessons they have recorded and posted for student reference. If your student misses school and you have internet access, please encourage your student to check our website daily. It will help your student stay current on his or her studies and will reduce the amount of work that needs to be completed upon return. Students will often tell us they were unable to get information from school while they were out and then go on to show us their social media feed from when they were out. Please remind your students that if they are posting to social media (instagram, facebook, snapchat…) while they are away from school, they could be using that access to the internet and the bandwidth to figure out what they have been missing so they don’t end up too far behind! This is not to say that students will get everything they need from our website when they are gone. The classroom instruction is important, as are labs and activities that happen within the school day. There will be concepts and explanations your student will need to hear from the teachers, so upon return to school, time must be set up with the teacher to get the pertinent information missed during the absence. As a general rule, for an excused absence due to illness or doctor’s appointment, students receive one extra day for each day missed. For most students this is ample time to make up work, particularly if they have checked online for updates to homework and classwork. If your student is absent and well enough to go online, please remind them to check our website for the homework and other information they missed while at school. With all of our technological resources, students can spend less time asking “What did I miss?” and more time staying caught up. Anything they have done before they return to school makes that transition back much easier and keeps students moving forward. Principal’s Update: What did I miss? I was at a conference for a few days last week and when I got back, there was some

catching up to do. I go through the paperwork on my desk, meet with Mr. Schalde, speak with counselors,

teachers and students, and spend a few extra hours trying to make up what I missed. Since the advent of the

smartphone, however, I find I’m not as behind on what is going on at school as I would have been if I had

been completely out of touch. Thanks to email, text, and the internet, I can keep up on much of the work of

running the school even when I’m not there.

When our students are gone, they often seem to not know what to do in order to catch up. They face the

same struggles as I do when they are gone: Paperwork piles up, important conversations are missed or

delayed, and they have much to do when they return. Fortunately for our students, it is easier than ever to

stay on top of student work when they are gone. Just about every teacher at our site has a homework link

available through the school website, and many teachers have their own web pages where they will post

handouts, study guides and even lessons they have recorded and posted for student reference. If your

student misses school and you have internet access, please encourage your student to check our website

daily. It will help your student stay current on his or her studies and will reduce the amount of work that

needs to be completed upon return.

Students will often tell us they were unable to get information from school while they were out and then go

on to show us their social media feed from when they were out. Please remind your students that if they are

posting to social media (instagram, facebook, snapchat…) while they are away from school, they could be

using that access to the internet and the bandwidth to figure out what they have been missing so they don’t

end up too far behind!

This is not to say that students will get everything they need from our website when they are gone. The

classroom instruction is important, as are labs and activities that happen within the school day. There will

be concepts and explanations your student will need to hear from the teachers, so upon return to school,

time must be set up with the teacher to get the pertinent information missed during the absence. As a

general rule, for an excused absence due to illness or doctor’s appointment, students receive one extra day

for each day missed. For most students this is ample time to make up work, particularly if they have

checked online for updates to homework and classwork.

If your student is absent and well enough to go online, please remind them to check our website for the

homework and other information they missed while at school. With all of our technological resources,

students can spend less time asking “What did I miss?” and more time staying caught up. Anything they

have done before they return to school makes that transition back much easier and keeps students moving

forward.

Library-Technology News: The library is beaming with the inspiring Mrs. Delmartinis’ 8th graders who are all eager to search the

stacks and the databases for quality information for their argumentative essays. Included in the research

process are reminders of the consequences of plagiarism and the importance of “giving credit where

credit is due,” the “how to’s” of deciphering the credibility of resources on the Internet, the value in

developing consistent organizational skills, and research strategies to assist students with applying

better thinking to everyday life. The enthusiasm is out of this world!

News From the Land Of 8th Grade Science! Nobel Prize is Coming!

All 8th grade science students will be participating in the Nobel Prize project. It entails extensive

research on any scientific subject and an 8-10 min. oral presentation which includes a demonstration

done live in class!

For specifics, check the information handout that each student recieved in class. Students have already

sponged for topics in the library and on Monday 10/20 will be turning in 3 topic choices and the

names of their partners, if they choose to work with others. (Maximum group size is 3.) Students will

have their final topics by their library research day this week.

The final presentations will be made Dec. 9-19. The top ten presentations will be invited back for an

encore performance in front of a panel of esteemed judges on Thursday, January 15. They will pick

this year's Nobel Prize winning presentation!!

Thanks for your support with this memorable assignment!

Mr. Cossey, Mrs. Hoffman, & Mrs. Jones

Holiday store- Donations Needed! It’s time, once again, to start prepping for the upcoming Children's Holiday Store, on Saturday,

December 6th. For those of you new to the concept, the Holiday Store is a community service we

provide for children to purchase fun, inexpensive, gifts for their family members. Our students help

the young ones shop and wrap the gifts right there. Parents are not allowed in (No peeking!) unless

they are volunteering to help.

We are now accepting donations of new or gently used items (no clothing) for all family members.

We will happily take in gift wrap, tissue paper, tape, ribbon, bows, and shoe box size boxes too.

For more information and/or you would like to be a part of the Children's Holiday Store staff

on Saturday, Dec. 6th, contact Kristine Carlin, [email protected]
