“Journey closer

to the Light that

is Life.”

“In Him was life, and

that life was the light

of all mankind.”

John 1:4

Pastor’s Pondering The recent sunny warm weather helps me appreciate the wonderful creation God has given us. There is something about seeing the sun shine, the brightness of the sun’s rays penetrate into my body and experiencing our entire back yard come alive with birds and squirrels that brings joy to my life. This led me to think about our Lent worship focus of Journey Into Light.

Our Lent worship focus of Journey Into

Light is bringing life

to me by opening

myself to the Light that is Christ which is true life. Unlike the recent sunny weather,

the Light that is Christ cannot be overcome by the changing circumstances of my life that often feel like the ever changing weather patterns. Unlike the recent sunny weather, the brightness of the Light that is Christ penetrates deep into my soul, permanently driving out darkness. Unlike the recent sunny weather, the Light that is Christ pulls me further into a life Eternal, not just for a moment. As I am filled each week with more Light, more darkness is forced out causing me to experience more Life in Christ: more abundance, more freedom, more joy, more hope, and more

love. I still appreciate and enjoy the sunny warm weather in February. I am thankful Christ is using it to move me along in my Journey Into Light.

Each week the Scriptures for the next Sunday’s worship are listed in the bulletin. I encourage you to each week read along in the Gospel of John, pray about what you read, and talk to others about the Scripture. I encourage you to fully participate in our Journey Into Light, allowing the

Light that is Life that is

Jesus Christ to draw your life into His Light!

In Christ,

Thoughts on Exodus 33:14: “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

This morning as I was spending my “quiet” time with God and doing my daily devotions, God

brought Ex. 33:14 to mind. I meditated on it, and concentrated on the two words that popped out at me - “presence” and “rest.” In pondering His “presence” and “rest,” the thoughts that

came to my mind were, “He is in, over, under, around, and on either side of me. He

surrounds me, envelopes me. He works through me. He is the God of the Universe, and yet he chooses to be present in this sinner’s life. He loves me THAT much - that He DESIRES to

be with me, to love me, to guide me, to take care of me, to listen to me, to find me when I wander and bring me back. I can rest in Him.

As all of these thoughts came to mind, I also thought about an incident that happened over the last few days - an analogy of sorts. Last week, my little Westie, Murphy, ruptured his

cruciate ligament and lost the use of his left back leg. It was going to cost a great deal (in my

financial realm), to have it surgically repaired. Murphy is 8 years old, which in human terms, makes him elderly. But, I didn’t have to ponder what to do - he would have the surgery. I

love him THAT MUCH. He had the surgery on Friday and did well. The recovery will be 4-6 months and will require that he be on a leash when outside so that when he decides to chase

something, he can’t. That protects him from further injury and protects the “good” back leg

because it’s under more strain now. My vet also instructed to not allow him to jump on and off furniture, or do stairs (and I have lots of them). He has to be carried off my deck to “potty.”

In other words, it’s going to be a lot of extra work for me over the next several months.

The thing is, I LOVE MURPHY. And, he depends on me alone for his care and protection. I

try to guide him away from danger and into safety. I make sure he “rests.” I give him his meds. I am there for him. I try and not get upset when he softly grumbles when he’s in his

kennel at night (He’s used to being on my bed at night). And God feels the same way about

me and wants the best for me, only SO MUCH MORE!!

When Murphy wraps his little front paws around my arm for stability as I carry him outside, it

makes me remember that I should be doing the same thing with God. It should be the first thing that comes to my mind - run to God, lean into Him, crawl into His lap and allow Him to

hold me and care for me. HE LOVES ME THAT MUCH!! And I’m so very grateful.

If you have an analogy you’d like to share with me or want to talk about mine, let me know.

I’d love to talk to you about it. Let’s share our faith and how God is working in our lives. He’s amazing and I’m so blessed!!!

Blessings, Sharon Sumner

Healthy Congregations Workshop and Neutralizing Conversation Training Events have given us a foundation to journey ahead in healthy ways into the future God has for us.

At the conclusion of the last Neutralizing Conversation Training Event the Holy Spirit guided the group to move forward with the next step in building healthy, Matthew 18 based practices into the entire life of the Northlawn UM Church congregation.

On Tuesday, March 15th from 6:00-7:30pm in Fellowship Hall everyone is invited to participate in a Healthy Congregations Next Step meeting. There are two items on our agenda. First, review and simplify our Behavior Covenant into two to four items, keeping Matthew 18 as a core element. Second, discern a method for this group to inform and education the congregation of what the Behavior Covenant is and how it is lived out.

If you have any questions, please contact Pastor Tim.

The Healthy Congregations Workshop, led by Naomi Garcia, gave us tools to navigate conflicts in ways that reflect Christ, are life giving, and will help Northlawn UM Church grow into the church God intends. The three Neutralizing Conversation Training Events, also facilitated by Naomi Garcia, enabled us to begin to use Matthew 18 in real situations to free us from the hurts of conflicts we have experienced. Are there other needs for volunteers besides patient care?

Absolutely. We always have a

How much time are volunteers

Altar Prayer Team

“My house will be called a house of prayer….” Matthew 21:13

“Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. Is

anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil

in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise

them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.”

James 5:13-15

The purpose of the Altar Prayer Team at Northlawn United Methodist Church is for people

to experience God’s Presence and Unconditional Love through prayer as an integral part of

worship.

The Altar Prayer Team has received training and is commissioned to serve as conduits of

God’s grace. By being open and responsive to the working of the Holy Spirit, the Altar Prayer

Team prays that God’s love, guidance and healing power would be released for the benefit of His

people and to His glory. The Altar Prayer Team is not the source of power, but conduits of God’s

grace. It is God’s grace that saves, heals and sets free because God is the source of all good (James

1:17).

At the conclusion of each worship, members of our Altar Prayer Team will be available at

the front of the sanctuary to offer the ministry of prayer to those who need encouragement, hope,

healing, help to get through the pain of current circumstances, or who have been impacted by that

day’s worship in some way. Members of the Altar Prayer Team can be easily identified by the

Name Tags they are wearing.

Take your concerns to Jesus, no matter how big or small they may seem to be. Altar prayer

can be one of the first steps in seeking God’s hand on issues in our lives. It’s not something

reserved only for the great challenges or very serious issues. Those on the Altar Prayer Team

handle concerns with kindness, care, discernment, and confidentiality.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact Pastor Tim.

ALL of the food, cards, and love shone to me from my church family. I am working hard at my therapy and hope to be active again in the next month. GOD IS GOOD and HE has shown his love and

care through my family and friends. Ruth VanValkenburg

How do I begin to express my "thanks" for all of the visits from Pastor Tim, VERY early in the morning before my surgery, and from Pastor Tim and Paula as I started recovery at Pilgrim Manor, and
