Jewish community reflects, atones on Yom KippurBy Michael [email protected]
Congregation Mekor Shalom, 14005A N.Dale Mabry Highway, has grown to morethan 100 households since it was founded alittle more than two years ago.
Members come from Lutz, from Land O’Lakes, from Wesley Chapel, from Zephyrhills, and many other parts of Tampa Bay.
And most of those households, if not all, will be stopping in on Wednesday, duringthe one time on the calendar where every-one comes together.
“I call it tax season for clergy,” saidHazzan Jodi Sered-Lever.
As Hazzan, she’s Mekor Shalom’s clergywho leads them in prayer. She’s also theirfounding spiritual leader.
The occasion is Yom Kippur, the JewishDay of Atonement, which is Sept. 23 thisyear. Part of the High Holy Days, along withRosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, it’sconsidered by many to be the most signifi-cant date on the Jewish calendar.
While it’s a time for reflection and for-giveness, it’s definitely not a time for judgingthe congregation at Mekor Shalom.
Sered-Lever knows the seats will be filledmore than during the weekly Sabbath serv-ices on Friday nights and Saturdaymornings. Whether it’s a treasured family tra-dition or a sense of obligation to participatein the High Holidays, many members whodon’t attend services regularly are lookingfor a seat at Yom Kippur.
And that’s fine for Sered-Lever. Whethersomeone attends every weekend, or hasn’tbeen there since the last Yom Kippur serv-ice, she wants everyone to feel welcomedand valued.
“I don’t use guilt in any of my religiouspractices. I meet people where they’re at,”she said. “I’m glad to see you when you’rehere. I’m glad to have your involvement; I’mglad to have your gifts. Because each per-son’s gifts are appreciated, and they’re notjust monetary, and they’re not just numbersshowing up.”
Those who do attend will arrive in a dif-ferent state than usual. Yom Kippur observersfast from the previous sundown until thatday’s sundown (with medical exceptions), re-frain from working or wearing leather shoes,do not bathe and do not anoint themselvesin perfume or cologne. They forego manydaily comforts and rituals in order to focusmore on asking for forgiveness, not only toGod, but to other people their actions mayhave affected over the past year. Much of theday is spent in prayer and reflection.
And they’ll not only pray, but hear theHazzan speak on a special topic. She didn’treveal this year’s subject, but previously
she’s focused on the concept of a properapology. Instead of a half-hearted “I’m sorryyou feel that way” statement, she encour-aged her congregation to take ownership intheir apologies, and to deliver them with au-thenticity.
Whether they come to pray on YomKippur out of a sense of tradition once ayear, or always attend weekly services,Sered-Lever wants every member to get themost out of the experience. She believesthat true reflection on actions and behav-iors, and an earnest desire to improveoneself, can have great benefits for an indi-vidual even after Yom Kippur ends.
“You get out of it what you put into it,”Sered-Lever said. “If you take this time and real-ly use it for this purpose, you have the greatestchance of being able to evolve as a person, and develop your relationships and connec-tions, and be the best person you can be.”
While it might be the one time of yearthat every seat is filled (during some busytimes, events might also be held at the near-by Carrollwood Country Club), Sered-Lever
doesn’t approach her job differently becausethere might be more of the congregation lis-tening. She’s still grateful for the attendees, appreciates their participation, and strives togive them a welcoming experience from themoment they walk in the door.
Her schedule doesn’t change much, ei-ther. In the days leading up to Yom Kippur, the Hazzan spent time instructing ZacharyMarlow, 13, as he prepared for his BarMitzvah, the ceremony that celebrates aJewish boy taking on the religious obliga-tions and observances of a man. A Jewishgirl taking part in the same ceremony isknown as a Bat Mitzvah.
Zachary’s mother, Susan, serves on thecongregation’s board of trustees. She be-lieves that even in Jewish householdswhere they don’t attend regular services, the need to connect with the communityduring the High Holidays is strong.
“Even if you weren’t in a religious house-hold, you always went on Rosh Hashanahand Yom Kippur. You always do. That’s justwhat Jews do, for the most part. It’s a very
cultural thing. It’s a way of life for us, and wetake that into adulthood,” she said.
Both adults and children attend MekorShalom, ranging in ages from infants tothose in their 90s. And whatever their rea-sons for attending Yom Kippur or any otherservice, Sered-Lever will keep working tomake it a positive experience each timethey step into the synagogue.
“It’s all about creating a safe and nurtur-ing environment for people to be. This is asanctuary,” she said. “It’s a safe communityand people should feel comfortable, andpeople should feel that there is a messagewith which they can connect.”
The Yom Kippur service will begin at 9a.m. The final service will begin at 6 p.m.For information, call (813) 963-1818 or visitMekorShalom.org.

A plan to establish and protect wildlifecorridors met another delay in its 15-yearjourney from a lawsuit settlement to ap-proval from the Pasco County Commission.
During a workshop on Sept. 15, PascoCounty commissioners opted to forego up-coming public hearings in October andNovember. The hearings were for a pro-posed ordinance to establish criteria andregulations for seven proposed wildlife cor-ridors that, in part, would pass throughprivate lands.
Instead, the matter will go back to thecounty’s Local Planning Agency for morediscussion. The agency’s members previous-ly tabled the matter without making arecommendation to the Pasco County com-mission on the ordinance. No new date forthe agenda item was scheduled.
Also, county officials plan to schedule afifth public workshop to get more input onthe ordinance. Another workshop for com-missioners also will be scheduled to provideadditional information including mainte-nance costs for the corridors and ballparkfigures on the cost of choosing to establishthe corridors through eminent domainrather than the ordinance.
The maze of hearings and workshops isonly the latest for a hot-potato issue that hasbeen tossed around by several PascoCounty commissions since a lawsuit settle-ment in 2000.
“We are eager to come to a resolution onthis,” said Matt Armstrong, Pasco’s executiveplanner for the Long Range PlanningGroup. “We don’t want it to be hangingaround there another 15 years.”
The sticking point is how to strike a bal-ance between conservation and propertyrights, including compensation for land ac-quired by the county for the corridors.
The proposed ordinance would be ap-plied only if a landowner sought to rezoneproperty for land uses of greater density orintensity, and had a corridor within theproperty’s boundaries.
In such cases, the county and landownerwould provide property appraisals andreach agreement on a sales price throughnegotiation. Landowners also would haveappeal rights before the DevelopmentReview Committee.
The county estimates a need for about7,000 acres to create the wildlife corridors.Subtracting land the county already owns
and some undevelopable wetlands, countyofficials say only about 2,500 acres wouldbe regulated through the ordinance.
The corridors in central Pasco wouldlink current and proposed developmentprojects at Starkey Ranch, Crossbar,Connerton and Cypress Creek.
However, Pasco County CommissionerMike Moore said “everyday average citizens”have concerns about what could happen totheir property.
“Their concern is that I’m not going tobe allowed to do what I need to survive, topay my bills,” he said. “They can’t grow or-anges. They can’t grow citrus. I’m just notready to go full force on this.”
The mandate to create the wildlife corri-dors – also known as critical linkages –comes from a lawsuit filed in the late 1990sthat challenged the county’s land use plan. The suit centered on the then-proposed de-velopment of the Oakstead subdivision, offState Road 54.
Oakstead went forward, but the settle-ment agreement required the county toadopt conservation measures including thewildlife corridors. A task force recommend-ed creation of the county’s EnvironmentalLands Acquisition and ManagementProgram, also known as ELAMP.
But ELAMP, which is a voluntary systemof acquiring land, isn’t sufficient on its ownto protect the wildlife corridors, said DavidArmstrong, assistant county attorney.
If commissioners choose not to adoptthe ordinance, acquiring land through emi-nent domain is the next option, he said.
“It’s more expensive,” Armstrong said.A guesstimate on eminent domain costs
can be provided to commissioners, saidPasco County Administrator Michele Baker.
She also noted that unless the countyowned easements through private land, thecorridors would not be open to the generalpublic for recreation.
If anyone wanted to try bicycling thecorridors, the answer would have to be ‘Noyou can’t. It’s still private property,’ ” Bakersaid.
About $36 million from the Penny forPasco revenues were set aside to purchaseconservation land, with about $17 millioninvested to date. The ELAMP program hasbeen extended another 10 years, and fundscould be used to purchase other properties.
A decision on the ordinance is critical, especially given the renewed burst of devel-opment in Pasco County, Armstrong added.
“Once it develops, it’s not coming back.”

LIBRARIES Hispanic Heritagecontest seeks entries
The New Tampa Regional Library is seek-ing entries for the Hispanic Heritage Artcontest.
Each year, the Hillsborough CountyPublic Library system celebrates HispanicHeritage month with its popular bookmarkand poster contests.
Last year, more than 1,000 bookmarksand almost 200 posters were entered. Eightcontestants then were awarded prizes forfirst place and second place, based upon thecaliber of their work.
The contest is open to any HillsboroughCounty student. Winners will have theirwork appear on a Hillsborough AreaRegional Transit (HART) bus. Winning en-tries also will receive professionally printedposters and bookmarks.
There are no specific criteria or guide-lines that the contestants must follow.
The judges choose finalists based onwhat is most visually appealing. They look atthe originality across the spectrum and atwhat really pops out.
Last year's contests brought in a huge au-dience, which pleased the contestants andfamilies that took part in the event. Schoolspecialist, Dana Warner, expects the samehigh turnout and positive reaction this year.
Participants may pick up an entry format any library branch or from the library'swebsite at HCPLC.org. Entries are due nolater than Sept. 30.

Sandy Graves, a member of the satelliteclub.
That’s just an idea at this point, but itcould become one of the club’s projects inthe future, she said.
The Land O’ Lakes group also would liketo take over the duties of serving aThanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving Day atthe Keystone Community Church, on StateRoad 54 near U.S. 41, Dusek said.
“The reason it’s a ‘Why now’ to be quitehonest with you is because when I joinedthe Rotary, I thought I was joining the LandO’ Lakes Rotary, and then I found out I wasjoining the Wesley Chapel Rotary becausethey had merged,” Dusek said.
She didn’t have a problem with it, butshe realized that the service projects theclub was doing were in Wesley Chapel, shesaid.
That made sense, because that’s wherethe club met, but she felt there were needsin Land O’ Lakes that a Land O’ Lakes clubcould address.
“We feel there’s plenty to do in Land O’Lakes,” Graves agreed.
As the economy improves, the womenthought it made sense to revive the serviceclub.
“I think we needed to re-energize,”Graves said.
So far, the group has about 20 members, but it hopes to attract more, Dusek said.
Joining the group costs about $1,000each year. That covers the weekly breakfasts, and a portion goes the Rotary Foundationand to Rotary International, she said.
The group’s goals are still being formulat-ed.
And, while it builds strength, it will con-tinue to be a satellite of the Wesley ChapelRotary, Dusek said.
“We have the support of the WesleyChapel group, which has a little bit over 100members now. If we need assistance, or weneed help from them, they’re like our moth-er club, and they will give us assistance,”Dusek said.
“They help us get off the ground, untilwe’re solid. Then we can charter our ownnew club, if we so choose to at that time,”she added.
“It’s just a great organization,” Dusek said.“If you are looking to feel good by spread-
ing the love and helping other people, that’sreally what Rotary is all about. ‘Service aboveself.’ That’s our motto,” she said.
The Land O’ Lakes group meets onFridays at 8 a.m., at the Lake Padgett EstatesEast Clubhouse, at 4533 Savanah Way. It isright off Collier Parkway in Lake PadgettEstates East.
The meetings include breakfast servedby Lake Padgett Bistro.

The goal of the Bring Back Our Coursegroup, the blog states, “is to protectPlantation Palms’ property values.”
According to a Sept. 19 blog posting,Morgan has enlisted professional golferJimmy Wright to join his team as presidentand chief executive officer of “GolfOperations.”
No sales price is available, but the real es-tate firm in the past has listed the propertyas a short sale for $1.2 million.
Native American Bank in Denver backedthe mortgage for the 156-acre property, when MJS Golf Group bought the golfcourse in 2011 for about $2.2 million.Mitchell Osceola, Jayson Ray and StevenMcDonald own the company.
No one with the company could bereached for comment.
Financial challenges in recent years haveplagued the course’s operations. It was shutdown for one week in 2013, then, re-opened before shutting down again in May2014.
Court records show debts have been aproblem as at least two companies, JohnDeere Landscaping and Lake Master AquaticWeed Control, filed lawsuits for nonpaymentof services. Courts awarded judgmentsagainst MSJ.
There also was at least one lien from theFlorida Department of Revenue, since paidoff.
In prior interviews with The Laker/LutzNews, Ray told a reporter that the recessionand bad weather limited the rounds of golfand hurt efforts to make the course a suc-cess.
County records show TLGFY, LLC-Capital One filed a tax deed for one of twoparcels for the golf course on June 30. The
application covers tax years 2012 through2014. However, the tax deed likely won’t besent to the Pasco County Clerk’s office untilearly 2016.
A second golf course parcel has delin-quent taxes, also for 2012 through 2014. Taxcertificates were issued, but county officialssay if the 2012 taxes are paid, that woulddelay a potential filing of a tax deed on thatparcel.
Those issues would be cleared awaywith the sale. “A new buyer can’t have cleartitle without that,” Rochlin said.
Surveys are posted on the websiteshowing about 90 percent approval fromresidents who favor the sale. A meet-and-greet with Plantation Palms’ residents tookplace at Hampton Inn on Sept. 2. TheBring Back Our Course members met sep-arately with residents of The Reserve, which has its own homeowners’ associa-tion.
Media reports highlight past unsuccess-ful efforts by Morgan to buy Waterville GolfCourse in Cleveland, Tennessee, and TurkeyGreek Golf Course in Gainesville. But ac-cording to the blog, Morgan addressedquestions related to those ventures at theresidents’ meeting.
In recent weeks, Morgan has hired land-scapers to spruce up the course, mowinggrass and clearing undergrowth.
Part of his management program for thecourse is to provide lawn services thatwould generate revenues to help with golfcourse operations.
Residents would choose a landscaperfrom a “preferred provider” list of compa-nies that would work for Morgan, accordingto the blog.
“The primary focus is on selling land-scaping services bundled with clubmemberships both inside and outside ofPlantation Palms,” the blog states.

The Steinbrenner High School coachingstaff knew its team was special when it de-feated Riverview High School by a 38-17margin on Sept. 18. That gave the Warriors a4-0 start for the first time in school history, and eclipsed the team’s win total from lastyear’s entire season, when it won just threegames.
But coaches also knew the team wasspecial when it defeated Chamberlain onSept. 11 to go 3-0.
And, the week before, when the team de-feated Blake High School to go 2-0.
The team had never done those thingsbefore, either.
In fact, it became the first varsity team atthe school to even start 1-0 with an openingwin against Gaither High School. (Theteam’s first victory in its inaugural season in2009 counted as a junior varsity victory).
Head coach Andres Perez-Reinaldo hadan inkling about their potential a lot earlierthan the start of the regular season. In fact, the realization dawned on him late last year.
“I had a good feeling last December,” herecalled. “We were planning on starting ouroff-season conditioning in January. I had agroup of these seniors come up to me andsay ‘Hey coach, we want to start now, inDecember.’ When those kids do that andtake that kind of initiative, that lets youknow you have a special thing going on.”
If the team has been special, its defensehas been spectacular. The defense gave up17 to Riverview and allowed 10 points toChamberlain, but previous outings wereeven better. Neither Blake (31-0) norGaither (13-0) put up any points against theWarriors.
The coach admits that a stifling defenseis a big key to the team’s success and keep-ing opponents frustrated.
“Our defense right now is the heart andsoul of the team,” he said. “If they (oppo-nents) can’t score, they can’t win.”
It’s a philosophy that resonates with theplayers, and gets repeated frequently.
“As the defense we knew that we weregoing to really be the glue of the team. Ifthey don’t score, they’re not going to win,”
said middle linebacker Patrick Lukert in aseparate interview.
The 6-foot-2-inch, 210-pound senior hashelped the team off to its impressive start, but he’s not surprised. He expected to seescoreboard success after watching the play-ers come together and focus before thegames started. He just thought it would hap-pen with a different quarterback.
Expected starter Cason Byrd suffered ananterior cruciate ligament injury in the
Preseason Classic, meaning backup ColinWray had to step in with little notice andperform.
He’s led the team to an undefeatedrecord, the most wins in one season since2012 and an opportunity to think about theschool’s first-ever playoff berth.
Again, Lukert said he isn’t surprised. “We have confidence in Colin. Colin’s
been practicing just like Cason has. Sincelast December he’s been working out. Weknew he was going to be all right,” he said.
The coach credits the entire offense forhelping pick up the slack with a new quar-terback behind center.
“Those guys, that wide receiver corpsand offensive line and running backs havejust rallied around our quarterback position, making him the best that he can (be). Andthat support has been huge for him,” Perez-Reinaldo said.
A strong start has created a lot of opti-mism and excitement, and the coach said it’sa product of athletes taking classwork seri-ously and buying into the program. It’s a lotof hard work, but after coaching for about 10years (this is his fourth season atSteinbrenner), Perez-Reinaldo said it’s still fun.
“Friday nights. There’s nothing like it,” hesaid.

Motorists zipping along Interstate4 between Tampa and Orlandocan’t see from their ribbon of
asphalt how close they are to the wild sideof Florida.
But the Green Swamp is all around. Often called the “liquid heart” of the
state, the swamp is headwaters for fourmajor rivers: Peace, Withlacoochee,Ocklawaha and Hillsborough.
Natural habitat, hiking trails, bluewaysand wildlife corridors spread across Polk,Lake, Sumter, Hernando and Pasco counties.
“This is wild Florida history in plain site,”said Carlton Ward Jr., a conservation photo-journalist whose photographic art capturesthe beauty of the state’s wild side and itsCracker history of cowboys and ranches.
On Sept. 15, more than 100 people filledthe Selby Auditorium on the campus ofSaint Leo University for a presentation onthe Florida Wildlife Corridor Expeditions, in2012 and 2015.
Saint Leo’s School of Arts and Sciences, departments of Language Studies and theArts, and Mathematics and Science spon-sored the event.
“He is a very accomplished speaker, com-bining words and pictures that allow us tohear clearly the importance of conserva-tion,” said Mary Spoto, the dean of Arts andSciences. “It’s something good for our stu-dents to hear and also the public.”
The first expedition of 1,000 miles in100 days traversed peninsular Florida fromthe Everglades National Park to theOkefenokee National Wildlife Refuge insouthern Georgia.
The most recent expedition of 1,000miles in 70 days began in January, followinga path from central Florida, across thePanhandle to Alabama, ending at the GulfIsland National Seashore. Along the way
“trail mixers” were held to invite thepublic to join in the trek.
The goal is to bring awarenessabout the need to protect and con-nect Florida’s rural lands, itswaterways and the natural paths tohabitats traveled by Florida’s diversewildlife, including the Florida blackbear and the Florida panther.
Ward sees his photographs as away to connect art’s inspiration withscience’s knowledge.
He collaborated with bear biolo-gist Joe Guthrie and environmentalistMallory Lykes Dimmitt on the “FloridaWildlife Expedition Corridor,” a bookchronicling the 2012 expedition. Asecond book on the 2015 expeditionwill be published in November.
“I’ve always had a connection toconservation,” Ward said.
But he didn’t think of Florida firstas his focus.
As a graduate student, he traveledon the first of nine trips to centraland western Africa. But each time hecame home, he noticed Florida’s changinglandscape.
“There was a part of Florida that I knewwas missing,” Ward said.
He began photographically to tell thestory of Florida’s conservation through itscattle ranches, handed down through gener-ations. He published “Florida Cowboys:Keepers of the Last Frontier” in 2009.
That multigenerational stewardship keptsome of Florida’s wildlife habitats intact, saidWard, an eighth-generation Floridian.
“Some of the ranchers I’ve met are someof the best conservationists I know,” Wardsaid.
It was once possible, he said, to hike andcamp for two to three nights without seeinga fence. But Florida’s population, whichnumbered about 2 million in the 1940s, isnow about 20 million. Pressures from devel-
opment are increasing, Wardsaid.
Research on the Floridablack bear in 2010 revealedthe disconnects along thewildlife corridors and the vastdistances that are traveled dur-ing a life cycle.
A black bear, tagged with aGPS tracking collar andknown as M34, went on a 500-mile walkabout throughFlorida from Sebring to nearlythe Green Swamp in theOrlando area. The bear haltedat I-4, in a location, whereother species ended up asroad kill trying to cross over
to what should be natural habi-tat for bears.
But Ward said, “That bearcouldn’t find a safe path to getthere.”
Instead, it retreated south-ward somewhere near FortMyers, where the collar auto-matically dropped off.
Ward remains optimistic, however, about the future.
“It doesn’t have to be thisway,” Ward said. “We can accom-modate a lot of people andsustain natural corridors.”
Wildlife underpasses andoverpasses, for example, canpreserve natural pathways andkeep corridors connected.
“It’s not just about buyingland,” he said. “It’s about incen-tivizing compatible land uses.”
His optimism springs also from the he-roes he has met on the expeditions.
M.C. Davis, who died recently, createdthe Nokuse Plantation, which contains thelargest pine leaf forest in the southeasternUnited States. Davis acquired more than50,000 acres for his pine leaf restorationproject, which borders Eglin Air Force Basein the Panhandle.
Davis partnered with Eglin and theFlorida Department of Transportation tobuild three wildlife underpasses on U.S. 331.
Another hero is Kendall Schoelles, athird-generation oysterman. “That man iscommitted to a life from generations past,”Ward said.
In 2016, Ward said he would continue tofocus efforts on preserving the wildlife cor-ridor. One issue for Ward and otherenvironmentalists is Amendment 1, whichvoters overwhelmingly approved in 2014.The constitutional amendment potentiallycould bring $700 million in real estate taxesinto the state’s coffers to acquire conserva-tion land.
However, lawmakers stirred controversywhen they approved a budget with $88million earmarked for land purchases.
“We have to stay loud about it for sure,”Ward said.
For information on the expeditions andthe Florida Wildlife Corridor, visitFloridaWildlifeCorridor.org.
Early on the 10th day of the expedition, Carlton Ward Jr., set up his camera on shore and paddledalong the Chassahowitzka River.
