Welcome to the service 23 February 2020

Speaker: Martin Macaulay

Scripture: Daniel 2:1-23

www.etchurch.co.nz ph: 489 6308

Daniel in the lion’s den was one of my favourite stories

as a child, right up there with Jonah and the whale and

Noah and the ark. I am excited about the new sermon

series “Faith for exiles”, from the study of the book of

Daniel. We all have much to learn from Daniel and his

mates Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego on how to be

resilient disciples in this secular world. Some fun facts about Daniel

1. Daniel is taken into exile while a young man, chosen for royal

service for King Nebuchadnezer court as he was good looking and clever.

(Daniel 1:4) But that was God’s plan.

2. Daniel was a vegetarian and teetotaller – he and his mates refused to eat the meat and

drink the wine from the Kings table (Daniel 1:12)

3. Daniel was probably in his eighties when thrown into the lion’s den

4. Daniel and his friends Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were smart - 10 times wiser

than their colleagues (Daniel 1:20)

5. Daniel, like Joseph, could interpret dreams and was prompted to the highest rank when

interpreting the Kings dream

6. Daniel was a prophet and his dreams were about the future Kingdoms up to the Messiah

(Jesus) and unfulfilled prophecies to the end of the world

Lions not withstanding, Daniel’s integrity, faith, devotion to prayer, courage and lack of

compromise make him a biblical hero worth the study.

But the grand theme of the 12 chapters of Daniel is not just about the glorious heroes and how

to live righteously but rather is that God rules, and God is sovereign. Daniel’s visions tell us all

of history is moving toward that day when the King of Kings will finally reign.

King Darius reached that conclusion about God :

For he is the living God and he will endure forever. His Kingdom will never be destroyed and his

rule will never end. He rescues and saves his people, he performs miraculous signs and wonders

in the heavens and on earth. He has rescued Daniel from the power of lions (Daniel 6 : 26-27)

East Taieri Church once again agreed

to support the Angel Tree project

to provide Christmas gifts for

prisoners’ children. The Prison Fellowship project, which in 2019 was

run by the He Koro-wai Whakapono

trust, was launched at ET on Sunday 3 Nov with over 40

parishioners generously offering to buy the $25 gifts

for the children, and others to donate or help in other ways. I am very grateful

for the very enthusiastic and

generous support shown by ET church

staff and parishioners for this Christmas project to support the families of prisoners in our

area.
