• The Kate Greenaway Medal is an award given in England for distinguished illustration in a children’s book

• Named for Kate Greenaway• Popular artist and children’s book

author/illustrator in England, late 1800s• “Competed” with Randolph Caldecott • Created a clothing style for children through

art

• Established in 1955 • First awarded in 1957• Awarded annually (in England)• Awarded to book published during previous

• Books are nominated and chosen by library professionals!

• Winners receive:• A golden medal• £ 500 worth of books to donate to a library• £ 5,000 Colin Mears Award (cash)

• Awarded since 2000• British accountant and children’s book

collector

SELECTION CRITERIA

• Original publication:• For children/young people• In United Kingdom or co-published in UK

within 3 months of publication elsewhere• In English or Bilingual with English as one

language

• Outstanding artistic quality• “Stimulating and satisfying visual experience

which leaves a lasting impression” (CILIP, Criteria, Para. 7)

• Consider interaction between text and illustrations

• All types of illustrated children’s books are eligible

• Previous Kate Greenaway winners are eligible
