The Church Mouse Monthly newsletter for the members & friends of Community Congregational Church of Elburn The Pastor’s Page…. As I write this, I am planning another trip – this one a few days’ excursion to Northern California to celebrate the 90 th birthday of my maternal uncle and godparent. He is the only surviving child in my mother’s family of fourteen children. As I have making travel plans with the airlines and car rental agency, and composing a packing list, it occurred to me that my focus has been totally on the people and places at my destination. I have given virtually no thought or prayer to what may happen to me en route, or how I will relate to all the unfamiliar people I am sure to encounter along the way. The typical traveler experiences a bevy of brief encounters with strangers. While traveling, we can bury ourselves in a book or DVD, and be quite oblivious to all the other human beings milling around us traveling to the same places. Only a very adventuresome few of us may engage in conversation with a perfect stranger, and usually that conversation would be of the casual kind – about the weather, airplane, food, where your relatives live, and the like. As a pastor, when I am in public settings – traveling being one of them – I am often reluctant to say what my work is for fear of the reaction. I don’t want to be stereotyped as a ‘religious fanatic.’ If I am feeling impish, I may say something like, “I am a branch manager of a very large corporation which sells a product everybody needs but not everybody knows it.” More often, I say I am in a ‘helping profession.’ Only later, after more conversation has taken place, would I say what I actually do. If I get rejected for being a Christian, at least I want it to be for who I am as a Christian, not for what some other person or group is, or the caricatures of Christians on television and other media. I want to change my traveling M.O. to be more like Christ’s traveling M.O. His self- awareness and other-awareness were so heightened, so profound, that He did not miss any- thing that happened. He was able to focus on the needs of another and His own needs at the same time, with dual result rather than cancel-each-other-out result. I want to be more fo- cused on opportunity and possibility than on possible threat or inconvenience. I want to spend more energy on loving and welcoming the stranger (see Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount) than worrying about what kind of impression I am making, or the other is getting. Interestingly, Webster (the dictionary guy) defines travel in two ways. The first de- fection is “to go from one place to another.” The second definition is “to be transmitted, as light.” You can see where I am going with this. I want my travels to be more than just going from one place to another. I want to be a transmitter of God’s Light. So my prayer for you all this summer is the same, that your travels be more than just going from one place to another, that you will, somehow, in whatever place or circumstance you find yourself, be transmitters of God’s Light. So, instead of saying, “Happy Trails to you,” let me say, “Light traveling to you.” The happiness will follow. The Pastorrsquos Pagehellip As I write this I am planning another trip ndash this one a few daysrsquo

excursion to Northern California to celebrate the 90th birthday of my

maternal uncle and godparent He is the only surviving child in my

motherrsquos family of fourteen children

As I have making travel plans with the airlines and car rental

agency and composing a packing list it occurred to me that my focus has been totally on the

people and places at my destination I have given virtually no thought or prayer to what may

happen to me en route or how I will relate to all the unfamiliar people I am sure to encounter

along the way

The typical traveler experiences a bevy of brief encounters with strangers While

traveling we can bury ourselves in a book or DVD and be quite oblivious to all the other

human beings milling around us traveling to the same places Only a very adventuresome

few of us may engage in conversation with a perfect stranger and usually that conversation

would be of the casual kind ndash about the weather airplane food where your relatives live

and the like

As a pastor when I am in public settings ndash traveling being one of them ndash I am often

reluctant to say what my work is for fear of the reaction I donrsquot want to be stereotyped as a

lsquoreligious fanaticrsquo If I am feeling impish I may say something like ldquoI am a branch manager

of a very large corporation which sells a product everybody needs but not everybody knows

itrdquo More often I say I am in a lsquohelping professionrsquo Only later after more conversation has

taken place would I say what I actually do If I get rejected for being a Christian at least I

want it to be for who I am as a Christian not for what some other person or group is or the

caricatures of Christians on television and other media

I want to change my traveling MO to be more like Christrsquos traveling MO His self-

awareness and other-awareness were so heightened so profound that He did not miss any-

thing that happened He was able to focus on the needs of another and His own needs at the

same time with dual result rather than cancel-each-other-out result I want to be more fo-

cused on opportunity and possibility than on possible threat or inconvenience I want to

spend more energy on loving and welcoming the stranger (see Jesus in the Sermon on the

Mount) than worrying about what kind of impression I am making or the other is getting

Interestingly Webster (the dictionary guy) defines travel in two ways The first de-

fection is ldquoto go from one place to anotherrdquo The second definition is ldquoto be transmitted as

lightrdquo You can see where I am going with this I want my travels to be more than just going

from one place to another I want to be a transmitter of Godrsquos Light

So my prayer for you all this summer is the same that your travels be more than just

going from one place to another that you will somehow in whatever place or circumstance

you find yourself be transmitters of Godrsquos Light So instead of saying ldquoHappy Trails to

yourdquo let me say ldquoLight traveling to yourdquo The happiness will follow

Yours in Christ

for the hot meals provided by local churches and

other organizations Our church provides an evening meal on the
