Chollerton Vicarage Dear All,

I write this with excitement and hope as I look forward to coming to serve in Bellingham Deanery in the Chollerton group of parishes, and to meeting with you all in due course. Revd Steve has asked me to write and introduce myself as I get ready to move, so I am surrounded by boxes, including one with small cheeping chicks as I write this! I have spent all of my ordained ministry in Carlisle Diocese groups of small rural parishes. Before I was ordained I studied music at University, and then worked as a Librarian, first at Lancaster University Library, and then at the Agricultural College in Lancashire, followed by 6 years as Librarian at the Young offenders Institution near Lancaster. I served my curacy in Kirkby Lonsdale where I learnt how to lamb sheep, and have continued to help out on the same farm in lambing time ever since. Long Marton Rectory has a large garden, so I have a few Greyface Dartmoor sheep, pilgrim Geese and Indian Runner ducks as well as rare breed hens. I hope that some will be able to come with me if there is space! I come from Cullercoats originally, and was at school in Newcastle, and I have lots of relatives in Northumberland, so this is a return much closer to my roots. I am passionate about rural life and ministry, ( I am Diocesan Rural Officer in Carlisle Diocese) and I am moved by the beauty of God’s creation. I look forward to coming to share in your lives and journey with Christ in the area. I hope we can all grow as we share in God’s love and mission in the future. God bless you. Sarah Lunn.

Round and About Humshaugh

Mothers’ Union A wonderful sunny afternoon was spent on June the 4th by our members who had joined the Hexham Branch in the garden of Charles Enderby. After admiring the beautiful flowers and shrubs, we were treated with a gorgeous tea. On July the 12th our Branch has invited members of the Hexham Deanery to an afternoon in the Sill – hopefully it will be a sunny day again….. On Thursday, September 6th, Adrian Langford will return to give another talk about his work in the Ambulance Service. The meeting will take place at the Langfords’ home and start at 1.30pm.

Pub Quiz It is a long time ago, but the May Quiz was won by “One Man Down” and raised £135 for the Humshaugh Playing Field Trust. No Quiz in July and August – the September one will be on Tuesday September 18th at 8.30pm and will be in aid of the Crown Players Drama Group. The Question Master will be Mick Jonas (who will be running the Great North Run that month in aid of Muscular Dystrophy UK.)

Humshaugh First School To celebrate the Year 4 leavers, there will be a wonderful production of “Jona – a Fishy tail”. It will be performed on Wednesday July the 11th at 9.15am and 5.30pm. We want to wish all the pupils a splendid summer holiday – the start of the Summer Term is on the 4th of September and on Saturday the 8th, there will be a relaunch of Messy Church in the Vicarage.

HAP The films in the Village Hall will start again this autumn! The first one will be on Friday October the 12th and will be followed by each second Friday in November, January, February and March.

Humshaugh Food & Flower Show

This will be held in and around the Village Hall on Saturday September 15th Starting at 12pm until 5pm. There will be competitions for adults and children in baking, flowers, photography and many others categories. Fabulous prizes can be won by the top scorers! And there will be refreshments and entertainment. For any further information, and possibly offers of help, please contact Sara Dodd on 681504.

WARK PARISH NEWS

Well, this is a month and a bit for us here at St. Michael’s! We have a garden fete on a Sunday and a 200th birthday to celebrate. So let us get going. Garden fete first. Sunday 8th July from 2.00pm on the Village Green. Any contributions for the wide ranging stalls will be gladly taken by Ann, Jani or John. Any help on the day will also be most welcome. This day, seriously, keeps our church alive here in the village. Please do support as you can.

Now it is not often we can say a 200th birthday is to be celebrated; but it is. On 12th August St. Michael’s, as it stands today, will achieve that milestone. We are having a special service of celebration for the occasion at 11.00am, to which all are welcome. The Rtd. Revd. Stephen Platten along with our Rural Dean, Revd. Steve Wilkinson will lead the service.

In relation to this Mike Gibson, along with a colleague, is arranging for a commemorative stamp to be produced. I believe they will cost £3.00 with limited availability. Please speak to Mike or myself for further details.

We are privileged to have Gillie Brexson, Property Director of Greenwich Hospital, joining us to give a talk on the establishment of the churches within the North Tyne. Following the service, in true Wark form, there will be a buffet Lunch in the churchyard. (If we can get the tent erected) Help please!!

I simply cannot allow these notes to go without saying a tribute to Barty Potts. Words cannot say enough. Thank you to Barty for the control of the Monday Men and the work undertaken for us at St. Michael’s. The attendance at your funeral was a tribute to you. The thoughts of all the parish are also with the family of the late Joyce Rutherford at this sad time.

The Guild next meet on 3rd September with Anne Bell being host. Please join with them as they forward plan some of the church events. I believe all have concerns regarding the use of plastic following the recent TV exposure. I have picked this piece up from a national newspaper` The Church of England has joined the war on plastic waste, with vicars buying cassocks made from recycled bottles’ we’ll just wait for the rustle from the entry from the vestry. Time will tell.

Until we speak again.

Love to all John xxx

Chollerton WI We will be welcoming Natalie Wood to give a talk on Aloe Vera/Bee Products at our meeting on Wednesday 4th July, 7.30p.m. in Barrasford Village Hall. Our August meeting will be held in St Christopher’s Gunnerton, when we will take a trip ‘Down Memory Lane’. Visitors always welcome.
