Welcome to the 2018 NPAA Conference On behalf of me, and the rest of the NPAA Board of Directors, we welcome you to the 2018 Annual Conference. Just by looking at the list of presenters this year, shows me firsthand how far your organization has come, with the likes of Kevin VanDam, Al Lindner and so many more. Our conference theme this year is “The Journey to Professional”. I believe we will all learn that a successful journey is created through lots of hard work, great mentors, and your ability to bond strong relationships in the industry. As your President, I encourage all of you to take advantage of the sessions, as well as the amazing networking opportunities that are available at this conference. Capitalize on this opportunity to learn, and please support the speakers that have put so much time and effort into their sessions. Most are donating a portion of their time, and have put in considerable effort to help make us all better professionals in the business, promotional, and fishing arenas. One area of focus this year is one near and dear to me, and that is the amazing growth in the High School, and College, Student Angling programs. As you see these Student Anglers around please take the time to welcome them along with any other new faces you may see. Thank you to our partners, attendees, and staff for helping to make this year’s event so spe-cial. It is all of you that make this organization as special, and impactful, as it is.

Calling All Anglers- For sportfishing to grow and prosper in future years, all anglers will need to play a role in growing and protecting the sport. Past NPAA board member, champion tournament angler, and highly successful entrepreneur, John Gillman, will share what he believes professional anglers, and those striving to become professional, can do to help the sport grow and to protect the sport. Opinion leader anglers as professionals are always in the spotlight and always need to lead by example. It’s critical that all professional anglers watch what and how they post on social media, act professionally at all times while in public, abide by boat/fishing laws, do their part to respect the resource, and take the time to give back to the future of the sport. John will be calling on all anglers to play a role in the future of sportfishing.

The Journey to Professional = Hard Work and Dedication- There are very few professional anglers in the industry that have worked harder both on and off the water than Kevin VanDam has during his career. Kevin knows the keys to success as an angling professional go far beyond catching fish; knowledge that has served him well in his career. Kevin will outline what he believes to be the most critical components to successfully navigating an angling career today and into the future.

Pro Staff Manager Panel: Now’s the Time to Ask- This 45 minute panel discussion will be guided by questions from

the audience pertaining to promotional staff programs and sponsorship. Bring the questions that you have always wanted to ask of a Pro-Staff manager. Passion: The Fuel for a Successful Journey- Nothing in this world that is of any value happens without passion coming

into play. Al Lindner’s passion for sportfishing has guided his entire career. A career in the angling industry for almost all successful participants is fueled by passion for the sport and for the outdoors. Passion, combined with hard work and knowledge are keys to success in this industry and are universal keys to success in all business ventures. During this presentation Al will speak to the role passion, hard work and knowledge play in creating a successful strategy and in reaching your professional goals in the sportfishing industry.

Educational Breakouts - Topic Descriptions

Advanced Electronics Applications- Marine electronics have advanced at an unbelievable pace since the little

green box, which has left many anglers in a foggy mist of this lake called technology. Bruce will show you how to use this evolving new technology to find and catch more fish and help you find your way home again.

How to Catch and Keep Sponsors- How does an angler get paid to fish? First it must be understood that

professional anglers actually get paid to sell fishing stuff. If you aren’t selling, you aren’t going to be paid. There are thousands of willing and able anglers looking for sponsorship, so how do you set yourself apart? This seminar will cover ways to get yourself in front of the right people to show them what you can do for them. And the second part of the equation is just as important: Once you become a part of their team, you need to show them value so they want to make you an integral part of their marketing budget for the long term. There are no secrets, but there are a few things that aren’t well known among anglers. This seminar will enlighten the beginner as well as provide some golden nuggets to help established anglers improve their sponsorship portfolio.

Get Noticed, Not Ignored- Strategies for Communicating with Brands- Learn how to speak to a brand from

someone who manages Pro-staff requests for a major company in the fishing industry. For every manufacturer, marketing managers and pro-staff directors receive thousands of inquiries per year. You’ll gain invaluable information on how to make yours stand out by both avoiding common pitfalls, and hitting every sweet spot on their promotional hit-list. Strategies for helping you create cohesive communications will be discussed, all while working towards the goal of building your personal brand so that you’re never ignored again.

The Journey to a Successful Guide Business- Join long time guide, Ron Barefield, as he details how to create

a guide business that will withstand the test of time. Developing a successful guide business takes time, knowledge, attention to detail, patience, commitment and hard work. Each of these components are keys to success. This session will address each critical component of the journey to a successful guide business and will include information that can be used by all guides, no matter their level of experience. A career as a guide is not for everyone, but for those who are willing to put in the time and effort it can be a very fulfilling career.

The Devil’s in the Details- Taxes and Record Keeping Essentials- Whether you count fishing as your hobby

or livelihood, it’s critical to understand how the IRS views your activities. Join Gail Thompson and Joe Rubenstein from Froehling Anderson, as they discuss IRS requirements for the recreational and professional angler.

You will gain valuable insight into the following: - Differentiating a hobby from a business - Understanding your compensation - Formulizing your business - Multi-State taxation and your obligations - Realizing the importance of good bookkeeping - What to do when you receive an IRS notice - Optimizing savings with tax planning

The Road to Your Professional Goal- The road to your professional goal in the fishing industry can take many

different paths. This seminar is designed to open your eyes to the many opportunities available. There are many ways to find your own happy place to occupy in this industry. To make your mark you need to seize upon every "right" opportunity that comes your way and make them count. Often the journey on the road to a successful career is a marathon and not a sprint with every choice helping shape your professional career and image.

Gail Thompson, CPA is

happiest when she’s on the lake with her three favorite fishermen: her husband and their two sons, Danny and Dana. Although her joy comes from watching others celebrate a monster fish, she’s usually the one who lands the

prize catch. She loves the water and has a deep devotion to keeping it pristine for generations to come. When she’s not on the water, she enjoys helping anglers succeed in their business. She makes sure they understand the not-so-glamorous aspects of the sport, such as paying taxes on a big win or maintaining good records. She likes hearing fish stories, too.

In addition, he shares his passion through articles, seminars, community outreach events and online media. Joe Rubenstein, CPA- For Joe’s family, a monofilament line is the tie that binds. Annual fishing trips—to Mille Lacs and Canada—serve as memory-making gatherings for the clan. One of Joe’s favorite memories, not surprisingly, is when he landed a 30

5/8-inch walleye, his personal best. Minimizing professional athletes’ tax liability has long been a staple of Joe’s practice at Froehling Anderson. With innate knowledge of this challenge, Joe helps clients further their passion while keeping their pocketbook intact.
