Basketball Season is almost here……..

If you would like to play basketball this season, please call Jamie at 828.337.8583.

I was just thinking…..

A couple of days ago we joined tens of thousands of churches across the globe

commemorating All Saints’ Day. For us, it was a special time to remember and

be grateful for those saints who have departed our company over the past

twelve months.

For now, I wish to take a few more lines in this space to enlarge something

that was part of my sermon. As I encouraged us not to “Remember the

Duck,”…I also asked you to consider that being a follower of Christ is not the

same as being in relationship with Christ. Allow me to expand on that a bit.

If you were raised in an average Christian church and tradition, little or no

distinction was made between one’s baptism and one’s discipleship. We Bap-

tist types have perhaps not served ourselves well when we so punctuate

“being saved” only to fail teaching the life that follows…or should follow, those

who are saved.

Some believe that the goal of the Christian church is to lead people to Je-

sus…PERIOD! This idea is encapsulated in the phrase “Let’s get ‘em saved!”

My understanding of our purpose is to live-out the Christ-life so thoroughly, so

convincingly, that others will be profoundly moved by our nature. In the early

church, unbelievers said of Christians, “See how they have love for one an-

other.” Once a person is drawn to Christ by what they see in the church

(Christians), it becomes the new work of the church to speak with those who

are being nudged by the Holy Spirit and tell them the Jesus story, as well as

our own stories and, by the leading of the Holy Spirit within us, invite them to

ask Jesus, IN FAITH, to enter their lives, forgiving their sins and guiding their

new life in Christ.

Regarding new believers, the next purpose of the church is to mentor, live-

out and challenge those new believers in deepening their relationship with

Jesus in a personal way. Haven’t we seen too often those who “get saved” but

then drift away from their new-found faith. Perhaps not always, but almost

always, when the newly born in Christ are left to themselves, they spiritually

starve. The church is the antidote to this, but too often, we don’t deliver.

When we get it right, when we tell the Jesus story, live the Jesus life, and invite others to join us, we witness an unencumbered Holy Spirit accomplish-ing great “signs and wonders” in our midst…accomplishing what human heart and skill alone could never accomplish. Now, on the other end of the spectrum are those who don’t claim to have a

personal relationship with the living presence of Jesus, but they do follow His

example and teachings. On the one hand, I love the fact that there are those

souls who have weighed the costs of “loving others as you love yourself, feed-

ing the hungry, defending the poor, and other costly teachings of Christ. On

the other hand, I’m saddened that their relationship with Jesus is much like

my relationship with my great-grandfather Yelton. I never knew him, but un-

derstand he was a great man and I would do well to live as he lived. In trying

to be like my grandfather, I am completely LIMITED by what I personally am

capable of achieving.

The Scriptures teach that God has more than that in mind for us. God knows us and wants us to know God, to lean upon God, to trust God. This, unlike my lack of a relationship with my great-grandfather, requires interaction in a liv-ing, personal way with a living, personal deity. That happens as we “get saved,” grow in our knowledge of God, and learn to relate to God by way of

His loving, living and personal Holy Spirit. Hope that helps. Joe

STEERING COLUMN The Emergency Planning Team met Sunday to begin their work and review the results of the Sheriff’s De-partment’s safety assess-

ment. The number one suggestion from Sgt. Mull was that we lock all access doors on Sundays after the worship service be-gins. This will go into effect on November 15. The front doors will be still be unlocked and an usher will remain in the foyer to welcome latecomers. If a parent needs to go to the nursery for any reason, an usher with a key will walk them over. This month we will also begin having someone in the parking lot before and dur-ing the service. If you would like to be a part of that rotation please let me know. These measures are simple and cost effec-tive ways to provide us with a higher level of security and safety on Sunday mornings. The Team will continue working on contin-gency plans for a wide variety of emergen-cies. Please let me know of any questions or concerns that will help us do a better job taking care of our flock. Take Care, Paul

IMPORTANT PICTORIAL DIRECTORY INFORMATION!

The church pictorial directory will be published in the next cou-ple of months. A very special thanks to June Causby for de-signing the directory and to Jeannie Roberts for making phone calls for appointments. The pictures were taken a couple of weeks ago and the makeup day for the next round of pictures will be on November 10. If you haven’t had your picture taken, please consider coming for the makeup day. Our directory truly won’t be complete without you in it.

As I watched some of our members make their way in to have their pictures made, I realized how diverse our congregation is and how special the people are who call Hominy their church home. We have so many families who have roots here that date back many generations. We also have families who are relatively new. This directory will be important for everyone to-day so that we can learn names and faces of those who attend now, and it’s also an historical document for future generations to look through.

If you are planning to submit a professional picture for the direc-tory, please let us know right away because there is a form that has to be filled out that the company requires from us.
