From the Flight Deck — Depuis le poste de pilotage
FROM THE FLIGHT DECK
A new year brings promise and change — from resolutions that focus on personal growth to renewed hope in our collective future. In the north, it ushers in winter’s crisp cold and brilliant shades of white, while to the south, warm weather and sunny skies await. And there’s no better way to enjoy both climates than embracing them.
For this first issue of 2020, re:porter welcomes winter. In The Pursuit (page 22), we head to Mont-Tremblant for a fun-filled itinerary that includes exploring the world of virtual reality and taking a helicopter ride over this rustic region in Quebec. For The Destination (page 34), we travel south to Myrtle Beach and pin down this South Carolina city’s environs that offer convenient day trips from the urban core. And in The Re:port (page 44), we learn how technology impacts education, for the better.
Here’s to 2020, the winter season and an enriching year of travel ahead.

COMMUNITY, CHARACTER and RESPONSIBLE INNOVATION at Kingsway College School
Published authors. Revenue-
generating entrepreneurs.
Unlimited student-leadership
making a difference in our
community and beyond.
Award-winning achievement
on local, national and
international competitions.
School can be like that. It is at
Kingsway College School. And it
starts with an uncommon focus on
developing the habits that matter
most for success in life, right from
prekindergarten.
Embrace learning, think flexibly,
take responsible risks, and make the
world better are four of our twenty-
six habits that shape our students
to reach their full potential. At KCS
we recognize that traditional school
practices have value, but today’s
students need that and more.
PricewaterHouse Coopers’ Global
Leader in Strategy and Leadership
Development, Blair Sheppard,
recently stated “For students, it’s not
just about acquiring knowledge, but
about how to learn. For the rest of us,
we should remember that intellectual complacency is not
our friend and that learning – not just new things but new
ways of thinking – is a life-long endeavour. Schools are
increasingly expected to teach 21st century skills – also
known as the 4Cs: communication, collaboration, creative
and critical thinking.”
Walking through our doors, you feel a sense of warmth
and community. You see our spirit expressed in the student
art that adorns our walls. You feel the energy as everyone
assembles for a new day of learning. You experience it in
the shared values and goals of our community. It is these
qualities and more that keep Kingsway College School
moving forward.
From PK to grade 8, small class sizes and exceptional
teachers help students establish the fundamentals and
attributes needed to thrive. Our Four Doors to Learning
program inspires our students to grow in the areas of
academics, arts, athletics, and citizenship. We have made
it a priority to promote student well-being, and educate
our students and families about mental health. And
through it all, we instill our three school rules: Respect,
Manners, and Try Your Best. To this foundation we add our
commitment to innovative practice. Widespread student
leadership, extensive engagement in service, student-led
entrepreneurship, coding and notable student growth as
learners, artists, athletes, and citizens fuels our passionate,
engaged community.

THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND“Of Myths and Mountains,” The Rooms, January 25–April 12
When the Group of Seven members travelled to Newfoundland and Labrador in the early 20th century, the resulting paintings were in-formed by the artists’ perception of the land as largely unoccupied, untouched wilderness. In this unique exhibition, their paintings are displayed alongside works by historical and contemporary Labra-dor artists, such as Josephina Kalleo and Gilbert Hay, responding with their own decolonized representations of the land and sharing vibrant depictions of communities and vistas teeming with life.

W hen it comes to corporate retreats, meetings and conferences, one of the biggest challenges is how to get the mind off office
matters. The best way to do that? Blue Mountain Resort.Want to reframe your company objectives in an impactful way?
Do it on top of an escarpment overlooking Georgian Bay. Seeking to generate new perspectives on an old challenge? Book
the Canopy Climb Net Adventure, “the ultimate tree fort” suspend-ed midway up the slopes.
At Blue Mountain Resort, corporate event specialists leverage the scenic Niagara Escarpment and Georgian Bay setting to incor-porate unique natural elements into work retreats all year long. The result is transformative, inclusive, accessible team-building custom events for groups of all sizes, that motivate, energize and inspire.
GREEN MEANS GONature time, or “forest bathing” (derived from the Japanese term shinrin-yoku) lowers stress (including technostress) and has a re-storative effect on the human immune and cardiovascular systems. It reduces anxiety, depression and anger and promotes longer, high-er-quality sleep.
Booking your next corporate retreat in the heart of the Niagara Escarpment does more than put your team into the right mindset; it also puts them in the right environment to reset and refresh.
ALL-SEASONS ATTRACTIONSWinter made Blue Mountain famous, given the resort’s 43 ski and snowboard trails and an average of 135 snow days each year (all enhanced by a world-class snowmaking system), as well as hiking, snowshoeing and ice-skating along a forested mountaintop loop.
But spring, summer and fall also shine as Blue Mountain’s “green season” — a time when mountain biking and hiking are best, as well as the lure of the Monterra Golf Course and a wide range of mountain activities such as the ropes courses, rides on the Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster and mountaintop Segway tours.
Make your next corporate event fun and phenomenal. Blue Moun-tain’s corporate sales team can design wow-worthy itineraries. So, get your team going! And visit bluemountain.ca.

CHEAP THRILLSLast Call
Forget fancy. For a casual night out that won’t break the bank, head to bartender Gina Chersevani’s no-fuss bar in the Union Market area, housed in what was once a 1940s cafeteria. Pool tables, TVs for catching the game and vintage décor boost the cozy factor, but the real draw here is the drink, including $3 and $4 pints and Chersevani’s disconcertingly good frozen Irish coffees. 1301-A 4th St. NE; (202) 543-2051; @LastCallBarDC on Instagram

SUGAR RUSHMarble Dessert Bar
Ready to break your “eat healthier” New Year’s resolution? Do it at this intimate NYC West Village bar, where a prix fixe menu of four oh-so-sweet courses includes an amuse-bouche, a choice of main, a refreshing palate cleanser and a finale of petits fours. But don’t expect a regretful sugar hangover — chefs Mauro Pompili and Manunya Sittisuntorn aim for elegant indulgence, not gooey gluttony. Recent offerings: artfully plated chocolate pudding with sea salt–chocolate crumble and a topping of buckwheat-tea foam, caramelized banana slices with toffee and roasted-brown-rice crisps, and a green-apple sorbet paired with pineapple granita, mint-and-lemon gel and an unexpectedly delicious dollop of olive oil crémeux. 27 Bedford St., New York; (646) 919-0879; mmarbledessertbar.com

ART EN MASSEMassArt Art Museum
Launching in February 2020, Boston’s bold new contem-porary art venue and non-collecting “teaching museum” is out to make cutting-edge art more accessible. With multidisciplinary works from a constantly changing array of contemporary artists and free admission for visitors, we’re calling it early: mission accomplished. CUT FROM THE CLOTH“Heritage Habitats,” Mississippi Valley Textile Museum, January 18–March 14
This little-known gem of a museum is a national historic site that hosts both permanent and temporary exhibitions related to all things fibre. “Heritage Habitats” features four large-scale sculptural installations by artists Ginger Owen-Murakami and Vicki VanAmeyden that aim to evoke nostalgia and memory, inviting the viewer to contemplate the common threads binding together peoples and cultures through the stages of life. 3 Rosamond St. E., Almonte, ON; (613) 256-3754; mvtm.ca/exhibitions

CURTAIN CALLParadise on Bloor
Ladies and gentlemen, please take your seats! The west end’s long-derelict Art Deco movie house, designed by architect Benjamin Brown in 1937, is ready to reclaim the spotlight. Loving and lavish restorations include a marble-topped lobby bar, ornate retro tilework, a truly glorious replica of the original marquee signage and a fully refurbished theatre for performances, films and events. There are even two adjoining spots for dinner and drinks — Osteria Rialto, where Southern Italian-inspired dishes take centre stage, and Bar Biltmore, the intimate, classic cocktail-heavy boîte upstairs. Can we get a round of applause? Applaudissements! 1006 Bloor St. W.; paradiseonbloor.com

WINTER LIBATIONSCured Craft Brewing Co.
Three cheers for the latest addition to Windsor-Essex’s burgeoning barrel trail! Uptown Leamington’s first independent craft brewery and taproom launches early in 2020, in a 1911 heritage building where tobacco used to be flue-cured (heat-cured without exposure to smoke).Tchin!

The Question — La question
In each issue, we answer a question you’ve always
wondered about
WHY ARE THERE FALLOUT SHELTER SIGNS ALL OVER NEW YORK CITY?
Text by Lola Augustine Brown Illustration by Jason Ford
Movie props? Political street art? Guess again. The nuclear fallout shelter signs affixed to buildings around New York City are real-deal relics of the Cold War era. Produced by the U.S. Army Corps of En-gineers in 1961, an impressive 1.4 million signs were manufactured for use across America, with thousands posted on civic and residential buildings throughout the five boroughs. (They certainly captured the zeitgeist of the time — there’s a fallout shelter sign on the cover of Bob Dylan’s 1965 album Bringing It All Back Home.)
Today, many have disappeared via the demolition or renovation of older build-ings, and any remaining signs are faded and corroded. In 2017, New York City’s Department of Education removed the signs from all school exteriors. And it’s about time — these buildings, formerly deemed safe havens from radiation, would be useless in an actual nuclear disaster, and some aid organizations say the signs are misleading and potentially dangerous. But keep your eyes peeled as you traverse the city. These fascinating relics still draw the eye and the imagination — a poignant reminder of nuclear-fuelled fear.
On the Ground Sur le terrain
In 2006, employees in the city’s Department of
Transportation discovered a cache of high-calorie
foods, water and medical supplies in the masonry at
the base of the Brooklyn Bridge. The containers
were dated 1957 and 1962, one labelled with ominous
instructions: “To be opened after attack by
the enemy.”

The Place — Zhou B Art Center Alan “Ras” Brothers believes in the power of the arts to transform the lives of young people. In the
expansive, art-filled space of the Chicago branch of The REMIX Project, he gets to see it happen.
Tell us about The REMIX Project. We’re a non-profit that functions as an alternative arts school for inner city youth aged 16 to 24. The nine-month program has two tracks: the Record-ing Arts Academy, which emphasizes training in the areas of music compos-ition and recording, and the Creative Arts Academy, which focuses on visual and digital arts. Soon, we hope to offer a Business Arts Academy similar to the one at Toronto’s REMIX location; it would provide training in branding, marketing and entrepreneurship.
What’s so special about Zhou B Art Center? There’s a really powerful artistic energy here and a strong sense of community. REMIX students experience a variety of chal-lenging life circumstances, and the team here helps them feel like they belong. For students to walk into a positive space and have a chance to decompress is important, especially when it can happen in a beautiful curated gallery on their way to alternative arts programming. It becomes a poetic journey for a young person to take each day.
Why is The REMIX Project so critical for Chicago youth right now?The arts spark in us the freedom and ability to be curious. I think that’s what life is all about — to be constantly evolving and learning more about yourself, the world and everything in between. Many of our city’s kids are on education tracks where they’ll go from kindergarten through high school without ever having one art or music class. We’re trying to address what I con-sider to be shared social needs and level the playing field for everyone.
When you’re not at Zhou B, where else do you like to hang out in the neighbourhood? Bridgeport Art Center is a beautiful space with unique programming. I love Bridge-port Coffeehouse — they roast their own beans and their pour-over is one for the ages. For smoothies, I head to Juisy Fruit + Tea, an amazing option for organic teas and juices. And Antique Taco is my go-to for dining. They’re all about authentic and seasonal offerings, the staff is kind, and the margaritas aren’t bad after a long day.
On

For fans of tail fins, whitewall tires, chrome and big block V-8s, there’s no better day of the year in Motor City than the third Satur-day of August. That’s when more than one
million spectators beeline over to Wood-ward Avenue — appropriately, the first
paved street in America — to celebrate all manner of classic cars and things that go
vroom. Some 40,000 autos, from Stingrays and Edsels to muscle cars and rat rods,
roll in from all over Canada and the U.S. to cruise the strip at the world’s largest one-
day automotive event.

WOODWARD DREAM CRUISE
Detroit’s love affair with the internal com-bustion engine began long before the Big Three set up shop. In 1899 the Tri-State Automobile and Sporting Goods Associa-tion displayed a handful of cars in the city. Then in 1907, an auto show was held by a group of local automobile dealers, which later evolved into the Detroit Auto Dealers Association and, eventually, the North Amer-ican International Auto Show (NAIAS) — the place for car aficionados to explore all that’s new on four wheels across nearly two million square feet of exhibition space.L’histoire d’amour entre Détroit et le moteur à combustion commence bien avant les Big Three, surnom donné à General Motors, Ford et Chrysler.

Skiing is not the only way to have fun in the LaurentiansÉchappée belle à Mont-Tremblant : il n’y a pas que le ski dans la vie
Text by Matthew Braga Photography by Marc-Olivier Bécotte
People flock to Mont-Tremblant to see a world transformed by winter. On the best of days, the landscape feels like we’re in a snow globe that’s just been shaken, with gently falling flakes weighing down the branches of evergreen trees and adding precarious new heights to chalet roofs. For skiers and snow-boarders, the promise of pristine powder will always be a powerful lure. But for those need-ing a break from the slopes or an alternative to the relentless freeze, there are more ways to enjoy Tremblant than merely flying down the side of a mountain.

One option: fly above it all. At Heli-Tremblant, a short drive from the hotels and shops, I find refuge in the cozy warmth of a helicopter’s panoramic cockpit. Anthony Marcy is our tour group’s pilot, but he will also be teaching me how to fly — a terrifying escalation, given how I had never been in a helicopter before. I think back to all the hours I spent playing Flight Simulator as a kid and hope the experience will somehow help.
I quickly learn that flying a helicopter takes an extremely light touch. Anthony controls our altitude with the big rotor on top and keeps the helicopter stable with a smaller rotor on the tail. My job is to steer, using a T-shaped controller called a cyclic, which is shared between the two seats. It doesn’t take much to gather speed or otherwise send the helicopter veering from side to side. Finding the cyclic’s sweet spot is key and takes a sur-prising degree of concentration. But before long, I’m smoothly nudging the helicopter in the direction I want it to go, further encour-aged when Anthony takes his hands off our shared controller and allows me to steer all on my own.
Take to the skyPremière option : prendre de la hauteur.

The Pursuit — L’aventure Mont-Tremblant, QCThe Pursuit — L’aventure Mont-Tremblant, QC
I fly us near the summit of Mont Tremblant, which is shrouded in an artificial fog — fresh powder kicked up by the snow-making machines. We pass trees and buildings, blan-keted in white, and the cracked, pockmarked surfaces of half-frozen rivers. Lac Tremblant is a deep, dark velvet blue that shifts un-predictably as we swoop overhead. It strikes me how everything is suddenly so small. The chalets and shops that once loomed so large now resemble a holiday scene in miniature, befitting the mantle of a fireplace.
Back in control, Anthony banks the helicopter hard to the right. We are fly-ing practically sideways now and I realize how cautious my own steering had been. He graciously says that I was one of the best co-pilots he’s ever had. I suspect he tells everyone that, but I decide to bask in the compliment all the same. Perhaps all that time with Flight Simulator really did pay off.
I quickly learn that flying a helicopter takes an extremely light touch.

Once safely back on solid ground, I head over to Tremblant Virtual Reality where I can visit distant places without actually leav-ing Tremblant. Catering to first-timers and seasoned players alike, the arcade is con-veniently just steps from the slopes. I wear a headset connected by a long tether, which hangs from the ceiling, to a computer far more powerful than the one I have at home. I’m also holding a wireless controller in each hand. As the outside world slips away, Craig Ewart, the arcade’s owner, starts me off the way he does all VR first-timers — by having me walk the plank.
I find myself on the sidewalk of a virtual city and take the elevator in the building be-hind me all the way to the top. But when the doors open, there’s no roof — only a wooden plank jutting out into wide-open blue sky. I realize that Craig has placed an actual wood-en plank on the floor in front of me. As I step onto the plank — real and virtual at the same time — a part of my brain convinces me that I’m definitely about to fall. It’s a remarkably effective sensory trick.
Terriblement efficace!

For another kind of escape from reality, I make my way to Mission Liberté, a purveyor of es-cape rooms around the corner from the arcade. There, I adopt the guise of a student at an elite boarding school for young witches and wizards — not dissimilar from the one in Harry Potter. The goal is to locate, and rescue, our missing professor. A portrait of a happy-looking couple on Mission Liberté’s Wall of Fame claims they’d escaped this room in a mere 17 minutes. I make it my mission to destroy their record, just as I plan to destroy the dark forces that are holding our dear professor against his will.
Despite my valiant intentions, in practice, this proves…difficult. The reality of an es-cape room is that, once you’re inside, time becomes your enemy. My usually welcome urge to stop and analyze thoughtfully is in constant conflict with the ceaseless pres-sure to go fast. The clock is literally ticking! It doesn’t help that my first few minutes in

With the headset covering my eyes, I can’t see the world around me. But there are sensors around the room — and on the head-set itself — that keep track of where I am at all times. If I come too close to a window or wall, I see a subtle purple warning grid on my screen like something out of the movie Tron. And when I turn my head to look at my hands, I can see every twist and turn of the controllers I hold mimicked perfectly, virtu-ally, in real time. I’m able to paint sculptures of fire and light that fill the whole room, ex-perience a John Wick–style shootout, play a rhythm game with light sabres for slicing to the beat, and try an outlandish chef’s-kitch-en simulator for kids that requires me to build the tallest sandwich possible with as many ingredients as I can find. It’s remarkable how well these experiences fool me into think-ing that what I’m doing is real or, at the very least, they carry real, physical weight. It’s as immersive as it is unsettling.

the room yield no insights at all. I’m already stuck and the game has only just begun. I feel like a dunce — until I decide to throw my in-stincts out the (non-existent) window and remember how escape rooms are won. If you bring the same sort of zeal and reckless aban-don that manifests itself when, say, tearing apart your home in search of a missing wallet or set of keys, you’ll do just fine. I look high and low, my hands grazing the underside of surfaces I’d never otherwise think to look at, let alone touch. I start to find hidden papers, arcane symbols and secret compartments at every turn. I fumble with drawers and locks. (And I still have a sneaking suspicion that my partner, re:porter photographer Marc-Olivier Bécotte did most of the real work.)
In total, it takes us 46 minutes to escape (technically 54 minutes if you count the four-minute penalty for each of our two clues). We didn’t even crack the Top 10! But I take solace in the fact that half of all players don’t even make it out. And the point wasn’t just to es-cape the room. Outside, fresh powder is still pouring ceaselessly out onto the slopes. This is simply another successful escape from the cold and the snow.

When one considers the typical charms of Myrtle Beach — an ocean-front city located in the centre of South Carolina’s Grand Strand coast — award-winning golf courses, beaches crammed with giggling toddlers and a boardwalk packed with tchotchke-laden kiosks spring to mind. But there’s another side to this sunny destination if you venture off the beaten path — around the famous 187-foot-tall Ferris wheel. Take a short drive to George-town, Pawleys Island, Murrells Inlet and the Carolina Forest area for surprising excursions, delightful local eats and genteel doses of Southern charm.

620 PRINCE
Under an hour’s drive from the bustle of Myrtle Beach’s main drag sits this intimate, charming and private — only six guest rooms — little inn. This quietly luxe spot in historic Georgetown makes you feel like you’re visiting your very elegant Southern aunt (think stately furniture and opulent fabrics). The house dates back to the 1800s, and its modern B&B incarnation offers old-time-style comforts, like a library
and three porches replete with rocking chairs — perfect for the daily sunset cocktail hour of 5 to 6 p.m. — alongside 21st-century amenities such as an outdoor pool and Wi-Fi.

RUSTIC TABLE
This unpretentious restaurant in Pawleys Island is helmed by award-winning chef — and former South Carolina chef ambassador — Adam Kirby,
who creates dishes that are both upscale and down-home. Requisite-try items include the fried
pickles dipped in homemade buttermilk ranch dressing, the enormous plate of shrimp ’n’ grits
and the divine peach cobbler topped with freshly made vanilla-bean ice cream.
boule de crème glacée à la vanille.10683 Ocean Hwy., Pawleys Island;

MARKET COMMON
This planned, pedestrian-friendly district was built on the grounds of a former Air Force Base. Made to resemble a small town, it
comes complete with restaurants, a local theatre company, cinema and man-made lake and retail shops. Stores include mega chains like Pottery Barn, Anthropologie and Barnes & Noble, along with small, cooler spots like Francesca’s, a boho boutique with flowy
dresses, beaded clutches and hipster hostess gifts.

MYRTLE BEACH SPEEDWAY
Adrenaline junkies can get their fix by driving an actual race car in the NASCAR Racing Experience at Myrtle Beach Speedway. Those feeling supremely confident can sign up for the popular Rookie Experience, where you get to take the car for a solo eight-minute spin after a couple hours of instruction from a crew chief. If that’s too daring, opt for the NASCAR Ride Along where you ride shotgun (which is still terrifying) while a pro driver hurtles you around the track at 100+ miles an hour.
Or just watch the fast and furious action from the sidelines.

BROOKGREEN GARDENS
The brainchild of famed sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington and her moneyed husband, scholar and philanthropist Archer Milton Huntington, Brookgreen Gardens is home to the world’s largest
collection of American figurative sculpture in the United States. The Huntingtons were New Yorkers but started spending winters in Myrtle Beach in the 1930s and ended up being a major local philanthropic
force. The lush 9,000+ acres of flowers, fountains and moss-covered oak trees provide the backdrop to some 2,000 sculptures by more
than 425 artists, including many pieces by Anna herself.
sculptures réalisées par 425 artistes, dont Anna elle-même. 1931 Brookgreen Garden Dr., Murrells Inlet;

What’s a place that only locals would know about? Bourbon Street Bar & Grille. It’s a good old dive bar, but it’s one of the few places in the city limits that have live music. It’s filled with locals — I don’t know the last time I saw a tourist in there! The clientele is very mixed. You get people who work in the hospitality industry and then lawyers too. It’s very eclectic.

Where can someone get a good, stiff drink around here? I’m a big bourbon guy, so I love Bourbon & Burnz in Pawleys Island. It’s a bourbon-and-cigar bar. They have the largest selection of bourbon anywhere in the beach, everything from a standard all the way up to Pappy Van Winkle. They have an extensive humidor as well. It’s very small and quaint.
ATALAYA CASTLE
A designated National Historic Landmark locally known simply as Atalaya, this castle in Huntington Beach State Park was the winter home of Anna and Archer Huntington. In the off-season, you can tour the eerie,
now-empty Moorish-inspired property built in the 1930s on your own or with a guide during the summer. The fascinating 30-room mansion features a tower and courtyards, as well as pens for the live animals (including
horses and even bears) that Anna kept as models for her sculptures.

Over the past decade, the landscape of learn-ing has shifted with the digital times, leaving us with opportunities to educate and explore things previously out of reach. From NASA missions to emotional growth, technology helps us gain new insights and change the face of the future.
According to Jennifer Flanagan, CEO of Actua, Canada’s largest STEM outreach net-work, there are many who are anxious about automation. “The reality is that technology will help us do our work better and faster,” says Flanagan. “It will augment the time we have to focus on higher-level tasks. The most important approach for people to take is to be open to change [and] to learning and to focus the fear on understanding how they can still be useful.”
PLAY WELL WITH OTHERSThe concept of emotional intelligence (EI) is nothing new; it was first formally defined in 1990 by psychologists Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer. But putting it into practice and valuing it as an asset to any team is relatively recent. Defined by The Oxford English Dic-tionary as “the capacity to be aware of, con-trol and express one’s emotions, and to han-dle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically,” EI has of late become shorthand for a particular set of skills valued highly in the job market across platforms and disciplines. In every industry — even those that once prided themselves on fostering iso-lated geniuses toiling away alone (think tech and academia) — the notion that more brains are better than just one makes healthy EI a key to success.
Toronto-based STEAMLabs, an “educa-tion-innovation non-profit” focused on science and technology, is driven by a four-part teaching philosophy that emphasizes communication, co-operation and crea-tivity. It recently offered hands-on pro-grams that included a collaboration with the Ontario Science Centre where visitors can explore the Inventorium learning space and design, build, test and iterate various
projects using high-tech equipment such as laser cutters and drag-and-drop coding kiosks. For educators looking for something more immersive, a 10-week no-experience-necessary “maker” bootcamp promises to turn tech newbies into creative collabor-ators with a bagful of new skills.steamlabs.ca
If you require coffee before you can get anything done, the free-breakfast lecture series Creative Mornings, which dubs itself “the world’s largest face-to-face creative community,” is another EI-focused endeav-our. It was conceived in 2008 by renowned Brooklyn-based design blogger Tina Roth Eisenberg, a Switzerland transplant more commonly known by her online moniker, Swiss Miss. Creative Mornings started with a straightforward goal: to build connection and inspiration within New York’s massive, sometimes overwhelming cultural scene, driven primarily by the big thinkers and folks leading tech innovations. Twelve years later, themed talks are held monthly in more than 200 cities worldwide, including Ottawa, Montreal, Boston and Chicago. Recent topics of note have covered the relationship between anxiety and creative tension, as well as fighting injustice through film. Although lo-fi in their execution, the talks are also archived online for reference and posterity.creativemornings.com

Thinking outside of the bag: Technology hasredefined the learning process by fostering EI(emotional intelligence) along with immersive “maker” programs.

SOUND OFFAt some point in almost everyone’s life, there is a moment of rock-star dreams — the lights, the stage, the adoring fans. And even though for most, those dreams never materialize, you can still learn some serious skills, thanks to easy-to-master tech and the opportunity to immerse yourself in music that draws you, whether that’s EDM or chart-topping pop.
A common present-day misconception is that if you have an iPhone with music on it, you’re basically a DJ. But the pros at New York’s Garnish Music, a boutique music-production school with roots in the U.K., might disagree. Whether it’s a 36-hour in-person workshop on writing a hit song or a week-long intensive workshop on becom-ing a DJ (if you’re good, you get to play at the Knitting Factory nightclub), Garnish incorporates tech know-how with one-to-one instruction for an immersive learning experience that might land its graduates on the Billboard charts.ny.garnishmusicproduction.com
If your tastes skew more toward talk, your next stop should be Podcast Garage, which has physical locations in Boston and Wash-ington, D.C. A collaborative space brought to life by the non-profit media company PDX, Podcast Garage specializes in afford-able access to technology, along with encouraging new makers through hands-on training at all levels. Join a Podcast + Pop-corn event to learn how to be a digital story-teller or rent Podcast Garage’s studio space, recording equipment and expert help as you explore new aural worlds.podcastgarage.org

When author Cheryl Strayed (Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail) went for the hike of a lifetime, she admits she made a lot of mistakes. What could have helped? Navigation: GPS. This one-day workshop from Hike Ontario teaches the fundamen-tals of GPS technology, enhances map read-ing alongside GPS and offers the opportunity to test your knowledge out in the wilderness and work out the kinks. Courses are offered throughout the year. hikeontario.com
For those not satisfied with what Earth has to offer, NASA recently released a new app. Rocket Science: Ride 2 Station allows its users to virtually experience the different stages of a space launch — choosing a vessel, selecting a crew and witnessing, and managing, lift-off. nasa.gov
SEE THE FUTUREWhile there is no crystal ball, expect to see things like nanotechnology, blockchain, smart robotics, 3-D printing, bioengineering and 5G to be used towards solving hot-button topics like climate change, food security and mental health issues. Flanagan stresses that digital skills and literacy, especially expos-ure to areas like AI and AR, will be even more critical. While everyone doesn’t need to code, we must understand how these tech-nologies work and influence our lives. Seeing into the future is crucial to adapting to it. For example, Actua has partnered with Google to develop a curriculum for high-school students and teachers in AI that will be launched this spring. The programs also introduces 3-D printing and smart robotics to learners across the country, especially those who don’t currently have access, such as Indigenous and at-risk youth. With a smarter, more adaptive workforce, the future looks exceptionally bright. actua.ca

Sky’s the limit: Amongrecent tech tools of noteis an app from NASA that lets you pick your ship and crew for your own personal rocket launch experience.

Just four kilometres from downtown Ottawa sits Gatineau Park — 361 square kilometres of opulent outdoor amenities. When covered in a thick blanket of snow, it’s one of Canada’s most popular cross-country-skiing destinations. Close to 200 kilometres of trails on the long sloping hills and plateaus make this park a perfect winter playground.

9:00 AM — First Things First À première vueMy first thing every day is to make sure data from our automated reports looks good. Anything that looks off, I address right away. ces rapports à différentes équipes.
My Pleasure À son affaireI meet with different business units — say, for a new report or modifications to an existing one. I try to be proactive and go beyond what they’re asking for on the surface.
