BOARD OF DIRECTORS

CEO’s Report

Dear Members,

I am pleased to announce the Wenty Café back-of-house renovations are now complete, providing a vast expansion to the kitchen space and upgrade of facilities. These enhancements have seen us reopen the Café with a more extensive menu, with improvements in work flow at the counter and behind the scenes for a better customer experience.

A real stand-out of the new Café menu is its expanded breakfast selections. Featuring Belgian waffles, ricotta pancakes, a Spanish omelette, big breakfast platter for two and much more, there’s something for everyone! We have extended the Café’s operating hours to open from 8am every Saturday and Sunday to best serve the weekend breakfast crowd.

I am also excited to see the launch of Wenty’s very own wine and beer labels being served throughout the Club. Our wine, Altitude 35, comes as an earthy Shiraz and a vibrant Chardonnay and is served from our Starlight, Wenty and Lucido Bars as well as in Lucido Italian Restaurant. 46 Pioneers is our new Larger, brewed to perfection just for Wenty Leagues Members and guests, and is available on tap now exclusively from Magpie Sports Bar.

All local not-for-profit community groups, charities and sporting groups are encouraged to make an application for funding through ClubGRANTS. Funding is available for specific local community priorities such as community welfare and social services, community development, community health services and employment assistance activities. Last year Wenty Leagues sponsored 34 community projects with over $270,000 in funding. If you need assistance with your application, simply visit the free workshop at Wenty Leagues on 23 April.

Mother’s Day has traditionally been one of the busiest days at the Club and we look forward to hosting you and your families again this year on Sunday 10 May! Following the success of our special Mother’s Day breakfast last year, this will be making a return to Lawsons Bistro.

See you round the Club.

Dear Members,

The Board have made some significant decisions over the last four years, placing the Club in a position to grow and undertake the next stage of the Club’s Master Plan. In recent months, the Board has been reviewing its development and building process against the various methods undertaken by other leading clubs. The outcome being the affirmation of the existing processes with only some minor modifications. With various design options put forward to address the staging of car parking, seating and dining experiences the appointment of a project manager and master planning architect will accelerate the delivery of the Clubs opportunities.

The Club’s Master Plan has been a substantial undertaking of the current Board and we are proud to have delivered some of the biggest changes to the Club in our 50 year history. No area of the Club

has been untouched in our endeavour to improve all the Club’s facilities for our 52,000 plus Members.

I am also proud that we have been able to report the continued growth in Club trade and profits again this year. This is an exceptional achievement by the team considering the extensive renovations we have undertaken in the past 12 months, with food and beverage outlets at times not operating at full capacity and other areas sometimes closed completely; our Members have shown incredible patience and understanding and continued to visit the Club.

This July will see some modifications to the Wenty Atrium area as a consequence of legislative changes in respect to not being able to consume food in areas where smoking is permitted. A large portion of the area will be opened up to the Café and will be covered, giving extra seating capacity and compliance with the new legislation.

I would like to remind all Members that the 2015 AGM will be held in the Starlight Room on Sunday 24 May. The Board look forward to updating you on the future development plans for the Club and delivering the 2014 Financial Results.

On behalf of the Board I wish everyone a Happy Easter and to all of our Mums a Happy Mother’s Day.

Ian McCannPresident

OLQP GREYSTANES SOFT-FALL AREA OPENS

With a $30,000 grant from Wenty Leagues, Our Lady Queen of Peace Primary in Greystanes was able to create a multi-purpose soft-fall area to host sporting and community groups.

Prior to work commencing to improve the area, the site was unusable as it retained water when it rained heavily, was not easily accessible and was an unsafe surface for sports causing a safety risk.

With the grant, OLQP Primary were able to excavate and backfill the area, lay secure concrete fittings and install artificial turf with a state-of-the-art drainage system. The new soft-fall space was complete with timber edging, versablock walls and light poles making the area safe and secure to use.

Now complete, OLQP’s new space is anticipated to service the whole community including its 820 students, community movie nights, craft fairs and neighbourhood play groups.

OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE SOFT FALL AREA

Holroyd City Council is accepting applications for funding from now until Monday 4 May. Funding is available for specific local community priorities such as community welfare and social services, community development, community health services and employment assistance activities. Last year, Wenty Leagues gave over $250,000 to community groups, charities and sports organisations through the ClubGRANTS scheme. Organisations such as The Leukaemia Foundation, Youth Off The Streets and Careflight are just a few of the organisations that benefited from the support provided by Wenty Leagues through the ClubGRANTS scheme in 2014.

A popular urban myth concerns a group of art students who passed themselves off as a band in order to con the local publican into giving them a gig in exchange for free beer. The deception worked better than intended, and the group came to be known as Mental as Anything. Nearly two decades later, they are still irritating the public with their highly listenable, idiosyncratic brand of garage pop. Join the Mentals for a night of their greatest hits including Live It Up, The Nips Are Getting Bigger, You’re So Strong, Too Many Times and Let’s Go To Paradise.

Referred to as a ‘comedy genius’, a ‘hypnotist without equal’ and ‘the best in the business’, Peter delights in the antics of his hapless volunteers almost as much as his audiences. This show will have lots of new, fun and outrageous routines where the audience can expect the unexpected. In fits of hysterical laughter, Peter will lose himself in each performance, pushing the boundaries of standard hypnotic fair and raising the bar with unique and truly whacky routines. All of this is delivered with a somewhat wayward humour in his distinctive, mischievous and impish style.

SWIMMING The Western Metropolitan Carnival was held on Sun 8 Feb, hosted by Wenty Leagues at our local pool. We fared reasonably well in the water with our President, Tom Lamont, gaining a 3rd placing in the 70-79 age group along with a win in the 100m Open Handicap.Vice President Howard Ambler finished a creditable 3rd in the same event making it a very pleasing result for our Club. In the 50m Open Handicap, Tim Miller swam very well to finish 2nd to a very fast swimmer from Castle Hill who has won this race about 3 times in a row. There is an event called the Sealed Handicap and it was very pleasing to see one of our newer members win this at her first ever carnival. Well done Sharon Ziemiecki. We competed in Albury at the AIF Carnival during March and will also be competing in Queanbeyan in June. Both of these tournaments are well attended with approximately 600 swimmers at Albury and 100 expected at Queanbeyan. Results from these competitions will appear in future Journal reports.John McCann – Publicity Officer

This year we have several first time players who have never played to tournament conditions so this will be a challenge for them so I wish them all the best and good luck to you all as there is some heavy competition out there this year.We recently held our Annual Snooker Challenge Tournament with the Mingara Recreation Club to which they visited Wenty. Everyone had a great day with some fierce competition play. It was good to catch up with some old mates and have a laugh. Unfortunately the result didn’t go Wenty Leagues’ way this time but it will give us something to fight for in the return match later this year.At the time of writing, I just received news that our own Joe Minichi had just won the NSW State Masters Snooker Tournament. For those of you who don’t know Joe, he is well known throughout the Snooker & Billiard world and maintains the Snooker tables at our club. He has had many successes in the past and I’m very sure he’s got lots more to come in the future. Congratulations Joe.

Happy snookering everyone and remember to be a little snooker loopy!Stephen Brennan - President
