SICILY THE JEWEL OF THE MEDITERRANEAN Sicily is truly a gem amongst the islands of the Mediterranean, Few others can rival its amazing contrasts of landscape, from barren hillsides to green plains,from snowy mountains to sandy beaches. It is the largest island in the Mediterranean and has been occup ied by a succession of foreign rulers,who include the Phoenicians Greeks,Romans,Arabs,Normans and the Spanish,who have all left per manent and in many instances,magnificient traces of their pres ence. The warmth of the Sicilian people is very noticeable,the colourful and vibrant towns combined with the wonderful climate is second to none. Places of particular interest are as follows:- Palermo,Monreale, Selinunte, Segesta,Erice, Agr igento, SYRACuSu., woto, CAT INA,Mount Etna Aci,CASTELLO, Taormina and Naxos. Note those in Capitals are where the Buzzo families were listed in the 161. Palermo is the capital and main sea port of Sicily.At Monreale there is the magnificient Cathedral famed for its multi-coloured marble,paintings and mosaics representing the complete cycle of the Old and New Testaments. The cloisters are equally famous and the views from the terraces over the Conca d'oro are really magnific ent. Selinunte, here are found the spell binding Greek j.uina> in llusij. yiouu setting,surrounded by beautifull countryside. Segesta, The Greek Temple which it is estimated was built in 425 BC and amazingly remains intact today. Erice, This is Sicily's most picturesque city with its mountain location,narrow and pebbled street and old houses. Agrigento - This must be one of the Archeologlcal wonders of the world,the Valley of The Temples.Of the ten Temples built in the 5th and 6th century BC.parts of nine are still visible and still located in a rural setting close to the town. SYRACUSE , another most scenic place of Sicily,here you can see the handsome palaces,churches and monuments in the local white lime stone which has mellowed to a yellow colour. Catania,yet another wonderful place to explore.

Aci Castello - Here is the most beautiful Norman Castle to beseen.

Taormina - This place is situated in a wonderful location some 820feet overlooking the sea and facing Mount Etna. It is world famous forits tranquil atmosphere,beautiful gardens and monuments.A GreekTheate built in the 3rd century BC can be seen and it affordsmagnificent view of Mount Etna.

Naxos - This place overlooks the bay with wonderful views andscenery.

SICILY

We know that Sicily was captured and administered by the Greeksway back in 480 BC.It was a place of such importance,sea wise that itwas captured by the Phoenicians who also captured Sardinia.Theseplaces were of vital importance to their navies and many a fleel wereassembled there to either trade or invade far off lands like Corn

wall.

This evidence more than ever backs up my claim that the BUZZO/Swere ship builders from Sicily and who traded with Cornwall for tinmany Centuries ago.
