    MARK 1 1305

I will send you out to fish for people.18Atonce they left their nets and followed him.

19When he had gone a little farther, hesaw James son of Zebedee and his brotherJohn in a boat, preparing their nets. 20With-out delay he called them, and they left theirfather Zebedee in the boat with the hiredmen and followed him.

Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit21They went to Capernaum, and when

the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the syn-agogue and began to teach. 22The peoplewere amazed at his teaching, because he

taught them as one who had authority, notas the teachers of the law. 23Just then a manin their synagogue who was possessed byan impure spirit cried out, 24What do youwant with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have youcome to destroy us? I know who you are the Holy One of God!

25Be quiet! said Jesus sternly. Comeout of him!26The impure spirit shook theman violently and came out of him with a

shriek.27The people were all so amazed that

they asked each other, What is this? A newteaching and with authority! He evengives orders to impure spirits and theyobey him. 28News about him spread quick-ly over the whole region of Galilee.

Jesus Heals Many29As soon as they left the synagogue,

they went with James and John to thehome of Simon and Andrew. 30Simonsmother-in-law was in bed with a fever, andthey immediately told Jesus about her. 31Sohe went to her, took her hand and helpedher up. The fever left her and she began towait on them.

32That evening after sunset the peoplebrought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33The whole town gathered atthe door, 34and Jesus healed many who hadvarious diseases. He also drove out manydemons, but he would not let the demonsspeak because they knew who he was.

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

1The beginning of the good news aboutJesus the Messiah, athe Son of God,b2as

it is written in Isaiah the prophet:

I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your wayc

3a voice of one calling in the wilderness, Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. d

4And so John the Baptist appeared in thewilderness, preaching a baptism of re-pentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5Thewhole Judean countryside and all the peo-

ple of Jerusalem went out to him. Confess-ing their sins, they were baptized by him inthe Jordan River. 6John wore clothing madeof camels hair, with a leather belt aroundhis waist, and he ate locusts and wild hon-ey. 7And this was his message: After mecomes the one more powerful than I, thestraps of whose sandals I am not worthy tostoop down and untie. 8I baptize you withewater, but he will baptize you withe the

    Holy Spirit.

The Baptism and Testing of Jesus9At that time Jesus came from Nazareth

in Galilee and was baptized by John in theJordan. 10Just as Jesus was coming up outof the water, he saw heaven being tornopen and the Spirit descending on him likea dove. 11And a voice came from heaven:You are my Son, whom I love; with you I

am well pleased.12At once the Spirit sent him out into the

wilderness, 13and he was in the wildernessforty days, being tempted f by Satan. Hewas with the wild animals, and angels at-tended him.

Jesus Announces the Good News14After John was put in prison, Jesus

went into Galilee, proclaiming the goodnews of God. 15The time has come, hesaid. The kingdom of God has come near.Repent and believe the good news!

Jesus Calls His First Disciples16As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Gal-

ilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrewcasting a net into the lake, for they were fish-ermen. 17Come, follow me,Jesus said, and

The Son of God. In the first line of his story, Mark declared Jesus deity.Jesus wasnt just a good teacher. He wasnt just a nice guy. He wasntjust a soldier and king who came to save the people from oppression. He was God. He was God in human form. This is what Mark wantedus to understand!

    MARK 2 1307

does this fellow talk like that? Hes blas-pheming! Who can forgive sins but Godalone?

8Immediately Jesus knew in his spiritthat this was what they were thinking intheir hearts, and he said to them, Why areyou thinking these things?9Which is easier:to say to this paralyzed man, Your sins areforgiven, or to say, Get up, take your matand walk? 10But I want you to know thatthe Son of Man has authority on earth toforgive sins.So he said to the man, 11I tellyou, get up, take your mat and go home.12He got up, took his mat and walked out

in full view of them all. This amazed every-one and they praised God, saying, We havenever seen anything like this!

Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners13Once again Jesus went out beside the

lake. A large crowd came to him, and he be-gan to teach them. 14As he walked along,he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at thetax collectors booth. Follow me, Jesus

told him, and Levi got up and followed him.15While Jesus was having dinner at Le-vis house, many tax collectors and sinnerswere eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him.16When the teachers of the law who werePharisees saw him eating with the sinnersand tax collectors, they asked his disciples:Why does he eat with tax collectors andsinners?

17On hearing this, Jesus said to them, Itis not the healthy who need a doctor, butthe sick. I have not come to call the righ-teous, but sinners.

Jesus Prays in a Solitary Place35Very early in the morning, while it

was still dark, Jesus got up, left the houseand went off to a solitary place, where he

    prayed.36

Simon and his companions wentto look for him, 37and when they foundhim, they exclaimed: Everyone is lookingfor you!

38Jesus replied, Let us go somewhereelse to the nearby villages so I canpreach there also. That is why I have come.39So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and drivingout demons.

Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy40A man with leprosyacame to him and

begged him on his knees, If you are will-ing, you can make me clean.

41Jesus was indignant.bHe reached outhis hand and touched the man. I am will-ing,he said. Be clean!42Immediately theleprosy left him and he was cleansed.

43Jesus sent him away at once with a

strong warning: 44See that you dont tellthis to anyone. But go, show yourself to thepriest and offer the sacrifices that Mosescommanded for your cleansing, as a testi-mony to them.45Instead he went out andbegan to talk freely, spreading the news. Asa result, Jesus could no longer enter a townopenly but stayed outside in lonely places.Yet the people still came to him from ev-erywhere.

Jesus Forgives and Heals a ParalyzedMan

2A few days later, when Jesus again en-tered Capernaum, the people heard

that he had come home. 2They gatheredin such large numbers that there was noroom left, not even outside the door, andhe preached the word to them. 3Some mencame, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. 4Since they couldnot get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof aboveJesus by digging through it and then low-ered the mat the man was lying on. 5WhenJesus saw their faith, he said to the para-lyzed man, Son, your sins are forgiven.

6Now some teachers of the law were sit-ting there, thinking to themselves, 7Why

    MARK 2:17

    1308 MARK 2

deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, Stretch out your hand.He stretched it out, and his hand was com-pletely restored. 6Then the Pharisees wentout and began to plot with the Herodianshow they might kill Jesus.

Crowds Follow Jesus7Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the

lake, and a large crowd from Galilee fol-lowed. 8When they heard about all he wasdoing, many people came to him from Ju-dea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regionsacross the Jordan and around Tyre and Si-

    don.9

Because of the crowd he told his dis-ciples to have a small boat ready for him, tokeep the people from crowding him. 10Forhe had healed many, so that those with dis-eases were pushing forward to touch him.11Whenever the impure spirits saw him, theyfell down before him and cried out, You arethe Son of God. 12But he gave them strictorders not to tell others about him.

Jesus Appoints the Twelve13Jesus went up on a mountainside and

called to him those he wanted, and theycame to him. 14He appointed twelveathatthey might be with him and that he mightsend them out to preach 15and to have au-thority to drive out demons. 16These are thetwelve he appointed: Simon (to whom hegave the name Peter), 17James son of Zebe-dee and his brother John (to them he gave

the name Boanerges, which means sons ofthunder), 18Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew,Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus,Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot 19and JudasIscariot, who betrayed him.

Jesus Accused by His Family andby Teachers of the Law

20Then Jesus entered a house, and again acrowd gathered, so that he and his disciples

were not even able to eat. 21When his familybheard about this, they went to take chargeof him, for they said, He is out of his mind.

22And the teachers of the law who camedown from Jerusalem said, He is possessedby Beelzebul! By the prince of demons he isdriving out demons.

Jesus Questioned About Fasting18Now Johns disciples and the Pharisees

were fasting. Some people came and askedJesus, How is it that Johns disciples and

the disciples of the Pharisees are fasting, but yours are not?

19Jesus answered, How can the guestsof the bridegroom fast while he is withthem? They cannot, so long as they havehim with them. 20But the time will comewhen the bridegroom will be taken fromthem, and on that day they will fast.

21No one sews a patch of unshrunk clothon an old garment. Otherwise, the new

piece will pull away from the old, makingthe tear worse. 22And no one pours newwine into old wineskins. Otherwise, thewine will burst the skins, and both the wineand the wineskins will be ruined. No, theypour new wine into new wineskins.

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath23One Sabbath Jesus was going through

the grainfields, and as his disciples walked

along, they began to pick some heads ofgrain. 24The Pharisees said to him, Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on theSabbath?

25He answered, Have you never readwhat David did when he and his compan-ions were hungry and in need? 26In thedays of Abiathar the high priest, he enteredthe house of God and ate the consecratedbread, which is lawful only for priests to eat.

And he also gave some to his companions.27Then he said to them, The Sabbath

was made for man, not man for the Sab-bath.28So the Son of Man is Lord even ofthe Sabbath.

    Jesus Heals on the Sabbath

3Another time Jesus went into the syna-gogue, and a man with a shriveled hand

was there. 2Some of them were looking fora reason to accuse Jesus, so they watchedhim closely to see if he would heal him onthe Sabbath. 3Jesus said to the man withthe shriveled hand, Stand up in front ofeveryone.

4Then Jesus asked them, Which is lawfulon the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, tosave life or to kill? But they remained silent.

5He looked around at them in anger and,

    MARK 4 1309

in it out on the lake, while all the peoplewere along the shore at the waters edge.2He taught them many things by parables, and in his teaching said: 3Listen! A farmerwent out to sow his seed.4As he was scat-tering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5Somefell on rocky places, where it did not havemuch soil. It sprang up quickly, because thesoil was shallow.6But when the sun cameup, the plants were scorched, and theywithered because they had no root.7Otherseed fell among thorns, which grew up andchoked the plants, so that they did not beargrain.8Still other seed fell on good soil. Itcame up, grew and produced a crop, somemultiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hun-dred times.

9Then Jesus said, Whoever has ears tohear, let them hear.

10When he was alone, the Twelve andthe others around him asked him about theparables. 11He told them, The secret of thekingdom of God has been given to you. But

to those on the outside everything is said inparables12so that,

they may be ever seeing but neverperceiving,

    and ever hearing but neverunderstanding;

otherwise they might turn and beforgiven!a

23So Jesus called them over to him andbegan to speak to them in parables: Howcan Satan drive out Satan?24If a kingdom isdivided against itself, that kingdom cannotstand.25If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26And if Satanopposes himself and is divided, he cannotstand; his end has come.27In fact, no onecan enter a strong mans house withoutfirst tying him up. Then he can plunder thestrong mans house.28Truly I tell you, peoplecan be forgiven all their sins and every slan-der they utter,29but whoever blasphemesagainst the Holy Spirit will never be forgiv-

en; they are guilty of an eternal sin.30He said this because they were saying,He has an impure spirit.

31Then Jesus mother and brothers ar-rived. Standing outside, they sent someonein to call him. 32A crowd was sitting aroundhim, and they told him, Your mother andbrothers are outside looking for you.

33Who are my mother and my broth-ers?he asked.

    34

Then he looked at those seated in acircle around him and said, Here are mymother and my brothers!35Whoever doesGods will is my brother and sister andmother.

    The Parable of the Sower

4Again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him

was so large that he got into a boat and sat a12 Isaiah 6:9,10

Live Like JESUSHow many brothers and sisters do you have? According to Jesus definition

of family, you have too many siblings to count! Jesus loved everyone like broth-

ers and sisters. He shared his time, food, wisdom, and love. And he said thatwhoever does the will of God is part of his family. So for about 2,000 years, his

family has been constantly growing. Have you joined Jesus huge family? The

next time you are in church, look around. Youre looking at a whole lot of broth-

    ers and sisters in Christ.

tard seed, which is the smallest of all seedson earth.32Yet when planted, it grows andbecomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds canperch in its shade.

33With many similar parables Jesus spokethe word to them, as much as they couldunderstand. 34He did not say anything tothem without using a parable. But whenhe was alone with his own disciples, he ex-plained everything.

Jesus Calms the Storm35That day when evening came, he said

to his disciples, Let us go over to the oth-er side.36Leaving the crowd behind, theytook him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37Afurious squall came up, and the wavesbroke over the boat, so that it was nearlyswamped. 38Jesus was in the stern, sleepingon a cushion. The disciples woke him andsaid to him, Teacher, dont you care if wedrown?

    39

He got up, rebuked the wind and saidto the waves, Quiet! Be still! Then the winddied down and it was completely calm.

40He said to his disciples, Why are you soafraid? Do you still have no faith?

41They were terrified and asked eachother, Who is this? Even the wind and thewaves obey him!

    Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed

    Man

5They went across the lake to the regionof the Gerasenes.a2When Jesus got out

of the boat, a man with an impure spiritcame from the tombs to meet him. 3Thisman lived in the tombs, and no one couldbind him anymore, not even with a chain.4For he had often been chained hand andfoot, but he tore the chains apart and brokethe irons on his feet. No one was strong

enough to subdue him. 5Night and dayamong the tombs and in the hills he wouldcry out and cut himself with stones.

6When he saw Jesus from a distance, heran and fell on his knees in front of him. 7Heshouted at the top of his voice, What doyou want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most

13Then Jesus said to them, Dont youunderstand this parable? How then willyou understand any parable? 14The farm-er sows the word. 15Some people are likeseed along the path, where the word issown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comesand takes away the word that was sown inthem. 16Others, like seed sown on rockyplaces, hear the word and at once receive itwith joy.17But since they have no root, theylast only a short time. When trouble or per-secution comes because of the word, theyquickly fall away. 18Still others, like seedsown among thorns, hear the word;19but

the worries of this life, the deceitfulnessof wealth and the desires for other thingscome in and choke the word, making it un-fruitful.20Others, like seed sown on goodsoil, hear the word, accept it, and producea crop some thirty, some sixty, some ahundred times what was sown.

A Lamp on a Stand21He said to them, Do you bring in a

lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? In-stead, dont you put it on its stand?22Forwhatever is hidden is meant to be dis-closed, and whatever is concealed is meantto be brought out into the open.23If any-one has ears to hear, let them hear.

24Consider carefully what you hear, hecontinued. With the measure you use, itwill be measured to you and even more.25Whoever has will be given more; whoever

does not have, even what they have will betaken from them.

The Parable of the Growing Seed26He also said, This is what the king-

dom of God is like. A man scatters seedon the ground. 27Night and day, whetherhe sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts andgrows, though he does not know how.28Allby itself the soil produces grain first thestalk, then the head, then the full kernel inthe head.29As soon as the grain is ripe, heputs the sickle to it, because the harvesthas come.

The Parable of the Mustard Seed30Again he said, What shall we say the

kingdom of God is like, or what parableshall we use to describe it?31It is like a mus-

IN THEBOATA furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so thatit was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.

    Crash! Boom! Flash!

Its the middle of the night and a vicious storm is threatening to blowyour house down. You quiver in the dark with your covers pulled overyour head. What do your mom and dad do? Well, theyre still sleeping. How can they sleep through such dangerous chaos?

This is what the disciples thought when a big storm came over theirboat. How could Jesus possibly be sleeping through it? Didnt he care?Imagine a groggy Jesus struggling to his feet in the rocking and rollingboat. He stands up and says to the storm, Quiet!

The disciples wondered what kind of a man could do that. What kindof a man can command the weather to obey him? It was almost toohard to believe.

This story is to let us know that Jesus is more powerful than any storm. We will go through storms, or difficult times, in life. Yet we dont needto be afraid of anything, for the God of the universe is on our side.

PRAYERWhen the storms blow in my life, I know that you, Lord, arepowerful. I can trust you to keep me safe from the lightning andthunder. I can trust you to be with me always. Amen.

    1312 MARK 5

had been subject to bleeding for twelveyears. 26She had suffered a great deal un-der the care of many doctors and had spentall she had, yet instead of getting better shegrew worse. 27When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd andtouched his cloak, 28because she thought,If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.29Immediately her bleeding stopped andshe felt in her body that she was freed fromher suffering.

30At once Jesus realized that power hadgone out from him. He turned around inthe crowd and asked, Who touched my

clothes?31You see the people crowding againstyou, his disciples answered, and yet youcan ask, Who touched me?

32But Jesus kept looking around to seewho had done it. 33Then the woman, know-ing what had happened to her, came andfell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34He said to her,Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in

peace and be freed from your suffering.35While Jesus was still speaking, somepeople came from the house of Jairus, thesynagogue leader. Your daughter is dead, they said. Why bother the teacher any-more?

36Overhearing b what they said, Jesustold him, Dont be afraid; just believe.

37He did not let anyone follow him exceptPeter, James and John the brother of James.38

When they came to the home of the syna-gogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, withpeople crying and wailing loudly. 39He wentin and said to them, Why all this commo-tion and wailing? The child is not dead butasleep.40But they laughed at him.

After he put them all out, he took thechilds father and mother and the discipleswho were with him, and went in where thechild was. 41He took her by the hand and

said to her, Talitha koum! (which meansLittle girl, I say to you, get up!). 42Imme-diately the girl stood up and began to walkaround (she was twelve years old). At thisthey were completely astonished. 43Hegave strict orders not to let anyone knowabout this, and told them to give her some-thing to eat.

High God? In Gods name dont tortureme! 8For Jesus had said to him, Come outof this man, you impure spirit!

9Then Jesus asked him, What is yourname?

My name is Legion, he replied, for weare many. 10And he begged Jesus againand again not to send them out of the area.

11A large herd of pigs was feeding onthe nearby hillside. 12The demons beggedJesus, Send us among the pigs; allow us togo into them. 13He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and wentinto the pigs. The herd, about two thou-

sand in number, rushed down the steepbank into the lake and were drowned.14Those tending the pigs ran off and re-

ported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what hadhappened. 15When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been pos-sessed by the legion of demons, sittingthere, dressed and in his right mind; andthey were afraid. 16Those who had seen it

told the people what had happened to thedemon-possessed man and told aboutthe pigs as well. 17Then the people beganto plead with Jesus to leave their region.

18As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessedbegged to go with him. 19Jesus did not lethim, but said, Go home to your own peo-ple and tell them how much the Lord hasdone for you, and how he has had mercy on

you.20So the man went away and beganto tell in the Decapolisahow much Jesushad done for him. And all the people wereamazed.

WhenHerod heard John, he was greatly puzzledc;yet he liked to listen to him.

24She went out and said to her mother,What shall I ask for?

The head of John the Baptist, she an-swered.

25At once the girl hurried in to the kingwith the request: I want you to give meright now the head of John the Baptist ona platter.

26The king was greatly distressed, butbecause of his oaths and his dinner guests,

he did not want to refuse her. 27So he im-mediately sent an executioner with ordersto bring Johns head. The man went, be-headed John in the prison, 28and broughtback his head on a platter. He presented itto the girl, and she gave it to her mother.29On hearing of this, Johns disciples cameand took his body and laid it in a tomb.

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand30The apostles gathered around Jesus

and reported to him all they had done andtaught. 31Then, because so many peoplewere coming and going that they did noteven have a chance to eat, he said to them,

    A Prophet Without Honor

6Jesus left there and went to his home-town, accompanied by his disciples.

2When the Sabbath came, he began to

teach in the synagogue, and many whoheard him were amazed.

Where did this man get these things?they asked. Whats this wisdom that hasbeen given him? What are these remark-able miracles he is performing? 3Isnt thisthe carpenter? Isnt this Marys son and thebrother of James, Joseph,a Judas and Si-mon? Arent his sisters here with us? Andthey took offense at him.

4Jesus said to them, A prophet is notwithout honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.5He could not do any miracles there, exceptlay his hands on a few sick people and healthem. 6He was amazed at their lack of faith.

Jesus Sends Out the TwelveThen Jesus went around teaching from

village to village. 7Calling the Twelve to

him, he began to send them out two bytwo and gave them authority over impurespirits.

8These were his instructions: Take noth-ing for the journey except a staff nobread, no bag, no money in your belts.9Wear sandals but not an extra shirt.10Whenever you enter a house, stay thereuntil you leave that town.11And if any placewill not welcome you or listen to you, leave

that place and shake the dust off your feetas a testimony against them.

12They went out and preached that peo-ple should repent. 13They drove out manydemons and anointed many sick peoplewith oil and healed them.

47Later that night, the boat was in themiddle of the lake, and he was alone onland. 48He saw the disciples straining at theoars, because the wind was against them.Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to passby them, 49but when they saw him walkingon the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, 50because they all saw himand were terrified.

Immediately he spoke to them and

said, Take courage! It is I. Dont be afraid.51Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were com-pletely amazed, 52for they had not under-stood about the loaves; their hearts werehardened.

53When they had crossed over, they land-ed at Gennesaret and anchored there. 54Assoon as they got out of the boat, peoplerecognized Jesus. 55They ran throughout

that whole region and carried the sick onmats to wherever they heard he was. 56Andwherever he went into villages, townsor countryside they placed the sick inthe marketplaces. They begged him to letthem touch even the edge of his cloak, andall who touched it were healed.

    That Which Defiles

    7

The Pharisees and some of the teachers

of the law who had come from Jerusa-lem gathered around Jesus 2and saw someof his disciples eating food with handsthat were defiled, that is, unwashed. 3(ThePharisees and all the Jews do not eat unlessthey give their hands a ceremonial wash-ing, holding to the tradition of the elders.4When they come from the marketplacethey do not eat unless they wash. And theyobserve many other traditions, such as the

washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.b)5So the Pharisees and teachers of the

law asked Jesus, Why dont your discipleslive according to the tradition of the eldersinstead of eating their food with defiledhands?

Come with me by yourselves to a quietplace and get some rest.

32So they went away by themselves ina boat to a solitary place. 33But many whosaw them leaving recognized them and ranon foot from all the towns and got thereahead of them. 34When Jesus landed andsaw a large crowd, he had compassion onthem, because they were like sheep with-out a shepherd. So he began teachingthem many things.

35By this time it was late in the day, sohis disciples came to him. This is a remoteplace, they said, and its already very late.36Send the people away so that they can goto the surrounding countryside and villag-es and buy themselves something to eat.

37But he answered, You give themsomething to eat.

They said to him, That would take morethan half a years wagesa! Are we to go andspend that much on bread and give it tothem to eat?

38How many loaves do you have? he

asked. Go and see. When they found out, they said, Five and two fish.

39Then Jesus directed them to have allthe people sit down in groups on the greengrass. 40So they sat down in groups of hun-dreds and fifties. 41Taking the five loavesand the two fish and looking up to heav-en, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to dis-

tribute to the people. He also divided thetwo fish among them all. 42They all ate andwere satisfied, 43and the disciples picked uptwelve basketfuls of broken pieces of breadand fish. 44The number of the men who hadeaten was five thousand.

not want anyone to know it; yet he couldnot keep his presence secret. 25In fact, assoon as she heard about him, a womanwhose little daughter was possessed by animpure spirit came and fell at his feet. 26Thewoman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoe-nicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demonout of her daughter.

27First let the children eat all they want,he told her, for it is not right to take thechildrens bread and toss it to the dogs.

28Lord, she replied, even the dogs un-der the table eat the childrens crumbs.

29Then he told her, For such a reply, you

may go; the demon has left your daughter.30She went home and found her child ly-ing on the bed, and the demon gone.

Jesus Heals a Deaf and Mute Man31Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre and

went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Gal-ilee and into the region of the Decapolis.g32There some people brought to him a manwho was deaf and could hard ly talk, and

they begged Jesus to place his hand on him.33After he took him aside, away from the

crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the mansears. Then he spit and touched the manstongue. 34He looked up to heaven andwith a deep sigh said to him, Ephphatha!(which means Be opened!). 35At this, themans ears were opened, his tongue wasloosened and he began to speak plainly.

36Jesus commanded them not to tell any-

one. But the more he did so, the more theykept talking about it. 37People were over-whelmed with amazement. He has doneeverything well, they said. He even makesthe deaf hear and the mute speak.

    Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

8During those days another large crowdgathered. Since they had nothing to

eat, Jesus called his disciples to him andsaid, 2I have compassion for these peo-ple; they have already been with me threedays and have nothing to eat. 3If I sendthem home hungry, they will collapse on

6He replied, Isaiah was right when heprophesied about you hypocrites; as it iswritten:

but their hearts are far from me. 7They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human

    rules.a

8You have let go of the commands of Godand are holding on to human traditions.

9And he continued, You have a fineway of setting aside the commands of Godin order to observebyour own traditions!10

For Moses said, Honor your father andmother, cand, Anyone who curses their fa-ther or mother is to be put to death.d11Butyou say that if anyone declares that whatmight have been used to help their fatheror mother is Corban (that is, devoted toGod) 12then you no longer let them doanything for their father or mother.13Thusyou nullify the word of God by your tradi-tion that you have handed down. And you

do many things like that.14Again Jesus called the crowd to himand said, Listen to me, everyone, and un-derstand this.15Nothing outside a personcan defile them by going into them. Rather,it is what comes out of a person that defilesthem.[16]e

17After he had left the crowd and en-tered the house, his disciples asked himabout this parable. 18Are you so dull?he

asked. Dont you see that nothing that en-ters a person from the outside can defilethem? 19For it doesnt go into their heartbut into their stomach, and then out ofthe body.(In saying this, Jesus declared allfoods clean.)

20He went on: What comes out of a per-son is what defiles them. 21For it is fromwithin, out of a persons heart, that evilthoughts come sexual immorality, theft,

murder, 22adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and fol-ly. 23All these evils come from inside anddefile a person.

Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida22They came to Bethsaida, and some

people brought a blind man and beggedJesus to touch him. 23He took the blind man

by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the mans eyes andput his hands on him, Jesus asked, Do yousee anything?

24He looked up and said, I see people;they look like trees walking around.

25Once more Jesus put his hands on themans eyes. Then his eyes were opened, hissight was restored, and he saw everythingclearly. 26Jesus sent him home, saying,

    Dont even go intoathe village.

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah27Jesus and his disciples went on to the vil-

lages around Caesarea Philippi. On the wayhe asked them, Who do people say I am?

28They replied, Some say John the Bap-tist; others say Elijah; and still others, one ofthe prophets.

29But what about you?he asked. Who

do you say I am?Peter answered, You are the Messiah.30Jesus warned them not to tell anyone

    about him.

Jesus Predicts His Death31He then began to teach them that the

Son of Man must suffer many things and berejected by the elders, the chief priests andthe teachers of the law, and that he must be

killed and after three days rise again. 32Hespoke plainly about this, and Peter tookhim aside and began to rebuke him.

33But when Jesus turned and looked athis disciples, he rebuked Peter. Get behindme, Satan! he said. You do not have inmind the concerns of God, but merely hu-man concerns.

The Way of the Cross34Then he called the crowd to him along

with his disciples and said: Whoeverwants to be my disciple must deny them-selves and take up their cross and followme.35For whoever wants to save their lifebwill lose it, but whoever loses their life for

the way, because some of them have comea long distance.

4His disciples answered, But where inthis remote place can anyone get enoughbread to feed them?

5How many loaves do you have?Jesusasked.

Seven, they replied.6He told the crowd to sit down on the

ground. When he had taken the sevenloaves and given thanks, he broke themand gave them to his disciples to distrib-ute to the people, and they did so. 7Theyhad a few small fish as well; he gave thanks

for them also and told the disciples to dis-tribute them. 8The people ate and weresatisfied. Afterward the disciples picked upseven basketfuls of broken pieces that wereleft over. 9About four thousand were pres-ent. After he had sent them away, 10he gotinto the boat with his disciples and went tothe region of Dalmanutha.

11The Pharisees came and began toquestion Jesus. To test him, they asked him

for a sign from heaven. 12He sighed deeplyand said, Why does this generation ask fora sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be givento it.13Then he left them, got back into theboat and crossed to the other side.

The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod14The disciples had forgotten to bring

bread, except for one loaf they had withthem in the boat. 15Be careful, Jesus

warned them. Watch out for the yeast ofthe Pharisees and that of Herod.

16They discussed this with one anotherand said, It is because we have no bread.

17Aware of their discussion, Jesus askedthem: Why are you talking about having nobread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? 18Do you haveeyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And dont you remember?19When I brokethe five loaves for the five thousand, howmany basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?

Twelve, they replied.20And when I broke the seven loaves for

the four thousand, how many basketfuls ofpieces did you pick up?

They answered, Seven.21He said to them, Do you still not un-

Christ followers arent always considered normal. Instead of cursing, they praise Jesus. Instead of getting into fights, they turn the othercheek. Christians often stand out in a crowd, and people might thinkthey are a little weird. Sometimes, its downright hard to fit in.

But thats a good thing. Jesus didnt fit in. He did things differently

than the religious leaders of his time. And he certainly confused theRomans, who were in charge of the country. Some people called himcrazy. Some people called him rebellious. Some people called him thedevil. But God called Jesus his Son.

Jesus said that following him requires sacrifice. We might be deemedweird or strange. We might have to walk in a path that leads us awayfrom what others are doing. It will be hard sometimes. And it may feel

lonely. But Jesus lived that way so we could look at his example.Jesus asks each of us to take up our own cross and follow him. Are youready? It wont be ordinary.

Jesus Heals a Boy Possessed by anImpure Spirit

14When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them andthe teachers of the law arguing with them.15As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they

were overwhelmed with wonder and ran togreet him.

16What are you arguing with themabout?he asked.

17A man in the crowd answered, Teach-er, I brought you my son, who is possessedby a spirit that has robbed him of speech.18Whenever it seizes him, it throws him tothe ground. He foams at the mouth, gnash-es his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your

disciples to drive out the spirit, but theycould not.

20So they brought him. When the spir-it saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boyinto a convulsion. He fell to the ground androlled around, foaming at the mouth.

21Jesus asked the boys father, How longhas he been like this?

From childhood, he answered. 22It hasoften thrown him into fire or water to killhim. But if you can do anything, take pityon us and help us.

23 If you can?said Jesus. Everything ispossible for one who believes.

24Immediately the boys father ex-claimed, I do believe; help me over comemy unbelief !

25When Jesus saw that a crowd was run-ning to the scene, he rebuked the impurespirit. You deaf and mute spirit,he said, Icommand you, come out of him and neverenter him again.

26The spirit shrieked, convulsed him vi-olently and came out. The boy looked somuch like a corpse that many said, Hes

me and for the gospel will save it.36Whatgood is it for someone to gain the wholeworld, yet forfeit their soul?37Or what cananyone give in exchange for their soul?38Ifanyone is ashamed of me and my words inthis adulterous and sinful generation, theSon of Man will be ashamed of them whenhe comes in his Fathers glory with the holyangels.

EVERYTHINGYOU HAVEJesus looked at him and loved him. One thing you lack, he said. Go,sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure

in heaven. Then come, follow me. Mark 10:21At Christmastime, have you ever seen someone standing outside a storeand ringing a little bell? These devoted volunteers are asking othersto give money to people in need. They ring their bells in hopes thatshoppers will drop some change into their buckets. A lot of people do.Its easy to drop some spare change into a bucket.

But what if the bell ringer asked you to puteverything you have into the

    bucket?

Thats what Jesus asked one young man to do. Jesus was testing thismans heart. Was this man willing to give up everything to follow Jesus?

When you see how great Jesus is, and when you understand that livingfor him brings blessings that are better than the world could ever give, your desire will be to give up whatever he asks even if he asks foreverything.

CONSIDERTHE COSTYou dont know what you are asking, Jesus said. Can you drink thecup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?

    Mark 10:38

Think about a really good friend of yours. When you go to a party ora game, you probably try to sit next to your friend. Without thinkingabout it, you know that the place next to your friend is a special spotreserved just for you.

Jesus disciples were asking to sit next to Jesus when he took his throneas King. They were his friends. And since he was going to be king,

they were thinking they were extra special and deserved the place thatonly people of authority were given. They wanted to be promoted toa big-time position. But they didnt understand Jesus type of kingshipor friendship.

Jesus responded by asking the disciples to consider the true cost offollowing him. Jesus was going to his death. Following him meansthat we will exchange our lives and anything this world has to offer

in exchange to serve and sacrifice for him. Following Jesus will notmake us more important. Instead, it causes humility and servant hood.Thats a different kind of friendship for sure! But its all about love forGod and for others.

PRAYERLord, show me what it means to truly be your friend and followyou. Help me to hear you with my heart. Amen.

11Jesus entered Jerusalem and went intothe temple courts. He looked around at ev-erything, but since it was already late, hewent out to Bethany with the Twelve.

Jesus Curses a Fig Tree and Clearsthe Temple Courts

    12

The next day as they were leavingBethany, Jesus was hungry. 13Seeing in thedistance a fig tree in leaf, he went to findout if it had any fruit. When he reached it,he found nothing but leaves, because itwas not the season for figs. 14Then he saidto the tree, May no one ever eat fruit fromyou again. And his disciples heard himsay it.

    15On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered

the temple courts and began driving outthose who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the moneychangers and the benches of those sell-ing doves, 16and would not allow anyoneto carry merchandise through the templecourts. 17And as he taught them, he said,Is it not written: My house will be calleda house of prayer for all nationsc? But youhave made it a den of robbers.d

18The chief priests and the teachers ofthe law heard this and began looking fora way to kill him, for they feared him, be-cause the whole crowd was amazed at histeaching.

became indignant with James and John.42Jesus called them together and said, Youknow that those who are regarded as rul-ers of the Gentiles lord it over them, andtheir high officials exercise authority overthem.43Not so with you. Instead, whoeverwants to become great among you mustbe your servant, 44and whoever wants tobe first must be slave of all.45For even theSon of Man did not come to be served, butto serve, and to give his life as a ransom formany.

    Blind Bartimaeus Receives His Sight46

Then they came to Jericho. As Jesusand his disciples, together with a largecrowd, were leaving the city, a blind man,Bartimaeus (which means son of Timae-us), was sitting by the roadside begging.47When he heard that it was Jesus of Naza-reth, he began to shout, Jesus, Son of Da-vid, have mercy on me!

48Many rebuked him and told him to bequiet, but he shouted all the more, Son of

David, have mercy on me!49Jesus stopped and said, Call him.So they called to the blind man, Cheer

up! On your feet! Hes calling you. 50Throw-ing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feetand came to Jesus.

51What do you want me to do for you?Jesus asked him.

The blind man said, Rabbi, I want tosee.

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King

11As they approached Jerusalem andcame to Bethphage and Bethany at

the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of hisdisciples, 2saying to them, Go to the villageahead of you, and just as you enter it, youwill find a colt tied there, which no one hasever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 3Ifanyone asks you, Why are you doing this?say, The Lord needs it and will send it backhere shortly.

Then herented the vineyard to some farmers andmoved to another place.2At harvest timehe sent a servant to the tenants to collectfrom them some of the fruit of the vineyard.3But they seized him, beat him and senthim away empty-handed. 4Then he sent

another servant to them; they struck thisman on the head and treated him shame-fully. 5He sent still another, and that onethey killed. He sent many others; some ofthem they beat, others they killed.

6He had one left to send, a son, whomhe loved. He sent him last of all, saying,They will respect my son.

7But the tenants said to one another,This is the heir. Come, lets kill him, and the

inheritance will be ours.8So they took himand killed him, and threw him out of thevineyard.

It was the same with the third.22In fact, none of the seven left any chil-dren. Last of all, the woman died too. 23Atthe resurrectionb whose wife will she be,since the seven were married to her?

24Jesus replied, Are you not in error be-cause you do not know the Scriptures orthe power of God? 25When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in mar-riage; they will be like the angels in heaven.26Now about the dead rising have younot read in the Book of Moses, in the ac-count of the burning bush, how God saidto him, I am the God of Abraham, the Godof Isaac, and the God of Jacobc?27He is notthe God of the dead, but of the living. The poor widow didnt have much to give. She definitely had given muchless than the other people at the temple. But she gave it all. The wealthygave because they had plenty and would still have plenty afterward. Itdidnt hurt. In the widows case, giving didnt just come from her purse, but it came from her heart.

This woman loved God so much that she would rather give her moneyto God than keep it for herself. That was a lesson Jesus had been trying

to pass on to the disciples. The more you love God, the less you careabout money or things. The widow did not give her money becauseGod required her to give her last cent. She gave the money because thisworld did not own her heart. Thats really big love.

5But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilatewas amazed.

6Now it was the custom at the festivalto release a prisoner whom the people re-quested. 7A man called Barabbas was inprison with the insurrectionists who had

committed murder in the uprising. 8Thecrowd came up and asked Pilate to do forthem what he usually did.

9Do you want me to release to you theking of the Jews? asked Pilate, 10knowing itwas out of self-interest that the chief priestshad handed Jesus over to him. 11But thechief priests stirred up the crowd to havePilate release Barabbas instead.

12What shall I do, then, with the one

you call the king of the Jews? Pilate askedthem.

13Crucify him! they shouted.14Why? What crime has he committed?

asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, Crucify

him!15Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate

released Barabbas to them. He had Jesusflogged, and handed him over to be cru-

    cified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus16The soldiers led Jesus away into the

palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called

Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56Many testifiedfalsely against him, but their statementsdid not agree.

57Then some stood up and gave this falsetestimony against him: 58We heard himsay, I will destroy this temple made withhuman hands and in three days will buildanother, not made with hands. 59Yet eventhen their testimony did not agree.

60Then the high priest stood up beforethem and asked Jesus, Are you not goingto answer? What is this testimony that thesemen are bringing against you? 61But Jesus

remained silent and gave no answer.Again the high priest asked him, Are youthe Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?

62I am,said Jesus. And you will see theSon of Man sitting at the right hand of theMighty One and coming on the clouds ofheaven.

63The high priest tore his clothes. Whydo we need any more witnesses? he asked.64You have heard the blasphemy. What do

you think? They all condemned him as worthy of

death. 65Then some began to spit at him;they blindfolded him, struck him with theirfists, and said, Prophesy! And the guardstook him and beat him.

Peter Disowns Jesus66While Peter was below in the court-

yard, one of the servant girls of the high

priest came by. 67When she saw Peterwarming himself, she looked closely at him.

You also were with that Nazarene,Jesus, she said.

68But he denied it. I dont know or un-derstand what youre talking about, hesaid, and went out into the entryway.a

69When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around,This fellow is one of them. 70Again he de-nied it.

After a little while, those standing nearsaid to Peter, Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.

71He began to call down curses, andhe swore to them, I dont know this manyoure talking about.

72Immediately the rooster crowed thesecond time. b Then Peter remembered
