2 | THE ISAIAN JULY-AUGUST 2018

by Cantor Tifani Coyot

WELCOMING THE NEWEST MEMBER OF OUR MUSICAL TEAM

This past winter, fourteen congregants and the Isaiah clergy launched a search to hire a new Assistant Cantor. The Assistant Cantor works in collaboration with our entire team, including the Cantor, our Song Leader, musicians, and Senior staff, to help enhance the music and ritual of Temple Isaiah. They will co-lead Shabbat on Friday and Saturday as well as holiday services, tutor B'nai Mitzvah, help direct the choirs, and sing in concerts and special events.

Five candidates auditioned before the search committee. Each candidate sang three liturgical pieces, chanted Torah, and responded to questions about Judaism, previous work experiences and administrative/management skills. One candidate stood out above the rest, Rabbi Jaclyn Cohen.

Thank you to our Cantorial Search Committee; Cantor Tifani Coyot, David Davidson, Steve Fox, Rebecca Gabor, Ava Friedman, Rabbi Dara Frimmer, Neda Hakakzadeh, Jamie Halimi, Allison Holtzman, Rabbi Zoë Klein Miles, Sydnie Loeb, Sara Leib, Gabe Rutman, Rabbi Joel Nickerson, Andrea Pullan, Robin Schorr, Navid Yadegar, and to our Honorary Members, President David Leichenger and Executive Vice President Jessica Dabney for helping us find the perfect match for Temple Isaiah.

We are thrilled to introduce you to our new Cantorial Soloist, Rabbi Jaclyn Cohen. She has a beautiful voice, an extensive Judaic and Hebrew background, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to connect with people of all ages. Rabbi Cohen started tutoring in April and will be starting as our Cantorial Soloist on July 1, 2018. Please join us on July 6 for her first Shabbat Service at Temple Isaiah.

LETTER FROM OUR NEW CANTORIAL SOLOISTShalom! I’m Rabbi Jaclyn Cohen, and I am thrilled to be joining the Temple Isaiah community as the Cantorial Soloist, working closely with Cantor Coyot and your talented, dedicated synagogue musicians and choirs. I am an LA native, born and raised on the Westside. I spent most of my childhood at Stephen Wise Temple and graduated from Windward School in Mar Vista. I earned a BA in Religious Studies & Music from UC Davis (go Ags!) and spent two years working in various pockets of the Bay Area Jewish community before entering HUC-JIR’s rabbinic program. I was ordained a rabbi by HUC-JIR’s Los Angeles campus in 2014, promptly moving to Seattle, Washington to serve Temple De Hirsch Sinai for three glorious years. Last summer my husband Josh, son Avi and I returned to Southern California to be closer to our families; since August 2017 I have served as Rabbi of Congregational Music

at Temple Beth Torah in Ventura. My background is eclectic and indeed, this past year especially I have learned what it means to create a different kind of rabbinate. Music has always been the lifeblood of my work; since college, I have regularly served as a Cantorial Soloist, and in these years since ordination I’ve integrated music of all genres into my rabbinate. Additionally, I am a volunteer speaker and advocate for Maternal Mental Health Now and Jewish Center for Justice, and this May I earned my 200-hour yoga teaching certification. Nothing makes me happier than time spent with family, episodes of the TV show Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and a freshly made bowl of guacamole. I am honored, excited and moved beyond measure to be joining the Temple Isaiah community, learning from its clergy, leadership, staff, and congregants of all ages. I look forward to getting to know you and you me in the years ahead.

“We are thrilled to introduce you to our new Cantorial Soloist, Rabbi Jaclyn Cohen”

“Oh What A Night!” On Saturday, May 12, over 350 members of Temple Isaiah joined to celebrate its 70th Anniversary at Playa Studios in Culver City. The evening, touted by many as “the best synagogue event they had even been to,” honored Rabbi Zoë Klein Miles for her 18 years of service to the community and recognized Temple Isaiah’s longest-standing members. In addition, the event featured the Boogie Knights, a '70s cover band, and production and catering by Randy Fuhrman.

EVENTS & HAPPENINGS

This past year, we celebrated Isaiah's 70th anniversary and our longtime commitment to building a meaningful and influential Reform Jewish community. As always, we look forward to the year to come and to gathering once again in Royce Hall for the High Holy Days. This year, as our rabbis shift roles, we are especially excited to share our vision for the coming years: our ongoing efforts to ensure all

congregants are seen, heard and cherished, to making Torah study relevant and Jewish ritual inspiring, and to the pursuit of justice. May this summer bless you with light and warmth and may it signal a New Year set aglow with goodness and love.

GREEN TEAM NEWS by Steve Fox

SOVA FOOD DRIVE by June Wynbrandt

TI Board Votes to Support LA City’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reduction ProgramAs reported previously, the LA City council directed its agencies to reduce emissions below 1990 levels by 45% by 2025, 60% by 2035, and 80% by 2050.

Our temple board intends that our facility comply with this resolution, and has asked for an implementationplan by the end of the year that provides a roadmap to achieve the 2025 goal. An easier way to express this goal is that roughly a 50% reduction from presentemission levels is required by 2025.

We welcome your thoughts and suggestions in the pursuit of this challenge. Please send them to SteveFox at [email protected].

SOVA provides a four to five days' supply of groceries to help them make it through the month, and has social workers on

site to help its clients help themselves on the path to financial stability. But recent budget cuts have deeply affected the

program. The hours of operation, paid staff, and areas of service have been greatly reduced.

HOWEVER, YOU CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS. And it is easy. In the Temple lobby, there are permanent food

donation barrels and bins for toiletries. SOVA is ALWAYS accepting donations and needs them throughout the year. But

in the spirit of the High Holy Days, there will be large bins in the garage throughout the month of September. Please

bring NON-PERISHABLE foods and NEW toiletries to donate when you come to Temple for services, classes, study or

celebrations. With that simple gesture, you can partner with SOVA to transform our community.

(BINS LOCATED IN THE MAIN LOBBY AND GARAGE) For more information about SOVA visit our TI/SOVA web page at

templeisaiah.com/sova.

TEMPLE ISAIAH & JFS/SOVA PARTNER TOGETHER FOR OUR HIGH HOLY DAY FOOD DRIVE 2018/5779!JFS/SOVA fights hunger and poverty in our community by providing food and supportive services to more than 9,000 clients each month, one in three of whom is a child. Others are seniors without a support network, families struggling after a parent lost his/her job, or homeless individuals trying to turn their lives around.

8 | THE ISAIAN SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016

Each year during our High Holy Days we remember loved ones that have left us. Temple Isaiah offers the opportunity to list those names in our High Holy Days Memorial Book. You can do so at the time you request your High Holy Days tickets.

The booklets will be available at our Yizkor Service on Yom Kippur Day and all Yizkor services throughout the year.

For more information contact Lenore Rosen in the Temple Isaiah office.

CHAIVILLAGELA TURNS TWO!

8 | THE ISAIAN JULY-AUGUST 2018

ChaiVillageLA members have participated in over 600 events since our inception, including everything from the popular “Sharing Our Journey” themed seder, to an Expo Line trip tour of the Los Angeles Times’ iconic headquarters.

ChaiVillageLA members joined a multi-synagogue project to help send 80 boxes of children’s and adults’ clothes, basic medical equipment and blankets to Syrian doctors and families affected by bombings. Thanks to Myrna Hant, Barbara Joyner and Terry Pullan, who are committed to the work of PATH (People Assisting the Homeless), several carloads of members helped two formerly homeless families move into apartments with furniture, linens, lamps and donated wish list items.

We’ve been to rabbis’ classes, met at the movies, dined out with interest groups, brought meals to people recovering, and walked around Rancho Park weekly with clergy.

Every day, we all contribute to realizing the mission of ChaiVillageLA: to create a community of synagogue members, age 50+, who enjoy each other’s company, rely on each other when there’s a need, and continue to be productive and engaged members in both ChaiVillageLA and in the neighborhoods and cities we love.

Growing older doesn’t mean we have to stop growing. Our lives offer endless possibility and potential, no matter our age. By coming together as a community, we will grow not just older, but bolder.

For more information visit ChaiVillageLA.org or contact Devorah Servi, Director: [email protected] • 310.592.0321

It’s been a dynamic year for ChaiVillageLA.

We welcomed new members with brunches

to help them feel a sense of belonging. Now

220 members strong, ChaiVillageLA members

assisting others, and pitching in at events.

LINES FROM THE LIBRARY by Ellen Cole, Librarian

9 | THE ISAIAN JULY-AUGUST 2018

The annual fall library reading contest begins during Jewish Book month and is a voluntary reading program open to all Religious School students. Children read Jewish books at their grade level and discuss each book with the Librarian. In addition to open reading, this year students received bonus points for reading books about Israel.

This year’s theme Israel is 70 Read is connected to the anniversary of the 1948 creation of the modern state of Israel. Librarian Ellen Cole presented awards to the twelve finalists at the Library Awards Assembly on Sunday, April 29.

Each of our twelve winners received a book about Israel's rebirth as a modern state, with their winning rank inscribed inside. All readers above the rank of honorable mention received contest theme prizes including, kippahs, jewelry and tzedakah boxes. Five points entitled readers to a yogurt treat at the Bigg Chill; ten points or more qualified contestants for prizes.

At the April 29 assembly, principal, teachers, fellow students, and parents applauded all our winners.

In our Grades 1 to 3 Division children read picture books and chapter books. Returning winner, third-grader Annie Loeb, stormed first place again, beating her previous record with a 73-point finish. With great flourish, returning winner, second-grader Zoe Friedman, graced second with 52 points. Returning reader, second-grader Shana Morrison nailed third place with 20 points. Second-grader Saffron Bilgihan secured fourth place for his returning win with 15 points. In tight races, fifth place goes to a new contestant, third-grader Alex Brand who garnered 14 points. And with a sixth-place tie, we have newcomers, second-grader Talia Sokolove and first-grader Jonah Weiser, each with 13 points. Four excellent new readers achieve honorable mention: first-grade readers Charlotte Bluth, Maxine Brand and Evie Swerdlow and second-grade reader Aly Mafrice.

In our Grades 4 to 6 Division children read long chapter books. The first place victor in this division was returning winner, sixth-grader Violet Bilgihan with 10 points.

A Thank You Note From Librarian Ellen Cole:A big thank you goes out to Rochelle Neuburger in the Temple gift shop for her helpful advice selecting prizes. Thank you to the kind donors who contributed to the Hurewitz and Levine Library Funds. Their support helps finance this popular program which promotes Jewish literacy.

Thank you to all the participants. All children are encouraged to defend their titles next year and are invited to compete in the new contest for new prizes.

Librarian Ellen Cole proudly announces the winners of the 2017-18 Levine Library Reading Contest.

Younger Grade 1-3 Division winners enjoy recognition at the award assembly on April 29.

Older Grades 4-6 Division winner, beams over her prizes.

Isaiah Women (IW) is completing an exciting year of educational and social programming, coupled with our goal to fund worthy causes at Temple Isaiah and in our broader community. Some examples of our sponsorship include our Scholarships to Isaiah's Teen Educational Trip Fund, SOVA, CAST, and Women of Reform Judaism's YES Fund (Youth, Education and Special Projects). We have also experienced significant growth in membership over the last two years as our members have enjoyed socializing, learning and deepening their relationship with other women in our community.

We maintain low annual dues to encourage the women of our community to join IW. We have only been able to continue this welcoming dues structure

because of the generosity of our members who believe in the mission of IW and contribute at levels above our minimum dues. While we applaud everyone's involvement at every level, it is essential to recognize and give heartfelt thanks to all of our donors that contribute at higher levels and allow Isaiah Women to continue as a vibrant and meaningful organization in fulfillment of our vision.

For further information or inquiries about Isaiah Women, contact me at [email protected]. To join or renew your annual membership (which is due July 1st), please contact Isaiah Women's Membership Chair, Sherri Zigman, at [email protected].
