The Irongate Square The irongate square recreates the combination of intricate decorative lines and sturdy security found in antique wrought iron gates. The final square measures 7” across.
Skill: Beginner US Terms Materials: A small amount of worsted weight yarn h hook (5.00 mm) Yarn needle for weaving in ends. Gauge: Final square measures 7” across. At the completion of the 3rd round, the square will measure 3”.
Stitches: Slip Stitch (sl st) Chain (ch) Single Crochet (sc) Half Double Crochet (hdc) Double Crochet (dc) Treble Crochet (tr) Notes: <> indicates stitches made into each corner. Stitch counts are indicated in (italicized brackets).
Round 1: Magic circle, ch 3 (counts as hdc + ch 1). Repeat *3 hdc, ch 1* x3. 2 hdc, sl st to top of beginning ch to join, pulling magic circle tight.
Round 2: Sl st to ch 1 space. Ch 5 (counts as tr + ch 1). Working into same ch 1 space, tr, ch 3, tr, ch 1, tr. Repeat *tr, ch 1, tr, ch 3, tr, ch 1, tr* in the remaining 3 ch 1 spaces. Sl st to 4th ch of beginning ch to join. (4 tr in each corner)
Round 3: ch 1, sc in same stitch. Sc around next ch space and into next tr. <sc, ch 3, sc> in the ch 3 space/corner of the prior row. Continue to sc in each stitch and repeat <> in each corner. Sl st to first sc to join. (8 sc on each side, with a ch 3 space at each corner)
Round 4: ch 8, <dc, ch 2, dc> in the corner space. Repeat *ch 8, sc in center of row, ch 8, <dc, ch 2, dc>* 3 times. Ch 8, sc at base of first ch 8 space. Do not join. (2 large loops (ch 8 space) on each side with one small loop (ch 2 space) at each corner)

Repeat *ch 4, sc in loop, ch 2, tr in sc between loops, ch 2, sc in center of large loop, ch 4, <tr, ch 3, tr> 3 times. Ch 4, sc in large loop, ch 2, sl st to 4th ch from beginning to join. Round 6: ch 1, sc around each ch and into each sc on each side, <sc, ch 2, sc> in the ch 2 space at each corner. Sl st to the first sc to join. (19 sc on each side, with a ch 2 space at each corner) Round 7: ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1). Repeat *dc, ch 1, skip a stitch* 4 times. <dc, ch 2, dc, ch 1> in corner. [Repeat *dc, ch 1, skip a stitch* 10 times, <dc, ch 2, dc, ch 1> in corner] Repeat [ ] along 3 sides. Repeat *dc, ch 1, skip a stitch* 5 times. Sl st to 3rd ch from beginning to join. (12 dc along each side, including corners) Round 8: ch 1, sc in same stitch. Sc around each chain and into each dc on each side, <sc, ch 2, sc> in the ch 2 space in each corner. Sl st to the first sc to join. (25 sc along each side)
