Shutting off the iPad is just a matter of holding down the On/Off Button at the top and sliding the white/red arrow to the right.

To add web short cuts on your Page Screen or Home Page open up Safari web browser to a web page, click on the

Button and scroll down the menu to the “Add to Home Screen” button.

Deleting and Moving Apps A very good skill is being able to delete and move Apps from page to page or into folders. To move an App, hold down on it for a few seconds until it and all of the Apps on the screen start to “shake.”

Now, move the App up/down, left right on the screen to move it. If you want to change the Page of the App, bring it to the center of the Page left/right and it will “move” to the proper spot.

Starting on Apps

As a way to change the pedagogy we’re going to do some investigation - some inquiry - around some of the more common Apps that are used throughout our building.

In order to do that we’re going to break you up into groups of 4/5 and have you act as software evaluators for specific applications. Each group will have at least (1) specific App with a possible (2nd) App as well to investigate, review and comment on.

Some source sites for review will be provided – YouTube often works well – but part of your job will be to use your Safari browser to help you locate info.

Of course each App has a help menu embedded in the program so that is a good source as well.

Dialogue as a group as you fill out the Software Review sheet.

Apps We’ll Take a Look At for Review

iBooks – iBooks is the digital book library for Apple. Here you can download digital books, magazines and documents to your iPod, iPhone and iPad. Syncs also with .pdf(s).

Dragon Naturally Speaking – One of the premier speak to text Apps; transfers spoken language to text. Great for students who struggle with written language – pen to paper.

Drop Box – An excellent digital repository for all of your photos, videos, documents, etc. Put anything into drop box and access it at home or on any computer online.

Apps for Review (Continued)Notability – Notability is an excellent multi-model App for note taking. You can record a class lecture, import photos or make a drawing. You can also import web clips into your notes.

Paper Desk Lite – Another note taking App with multimodal capabilities. Notes can be printed or sent to Drop Box to store or sent to an e-mail account.

Popplet Lite – Popplet is a mind mapping program similar to Inspiration that let’s kids show their ideas and connections amongst ideas with pictures, animations and text.

Apps for Review (Continued)

Verbally – Although defined as an Augmentative and Alternative Communication Device (AAC), this program can also help struggling writers with sentence construction and grammar through word prediction.

Word Cloud is similar to Wordle and other word mind map programs. Word Cloud uses different floating collections of text to help you get your ideas and thoughts across.

Apps Continued After you dialogue and feel confident discussing the App to your peers we’ll meet back and you can use whatever technological tool you want or “not” to prepare a short summary of your App and it’s use for kids. You can select a “spokesperson” or do a group summary – whatever works.

Ginger Labs and sells from the App Store for the very affordable price of 99 cents.

Note-Taking Apps for iPad” will take you to reviews from legitimate sources such as Gizmodo, Life Hacker, PC Magazine, etc.

At a recent webinar on Assisitve Technology, Therese Willkomm from UNH had a slide for web sites and apps that review apps. I will provide that as a resource if you’re interested.

Enter Notability in the YouTube Search box for all kinds of “How To” videos on basic things you can do.

iBooks, App Center & the Cloud

• It’s important to remember that as we add books to our [email protected] account through gift cards that our account is e-mail address specific.

• Remember that if you purchase a book on an iPad with a different Apple username – a common early error.

• The good thing about Apple’s use of Cloud computing is that once we purchase a book, we can install it directly to an iPad through the “Purchased” icon.

• Or sync a number of iPads through the Mac Book.

How to Use iBooksHow to use iBooks on the iPad• Open up iBooks to view the app's main virtual bookshelf • Tap a book to start reading it. It'll open up to fill the screen • Swipe or tap on a blank area of a page to turn the page • To view two pages, just turn the iPad to landscape mode • Select the A icon to change the font or font size • To see what a word means, you can press and hold to look it up, as you

would with copying and pasting in other iPad apps • You can search for a word in the book by pressing the search icon on the

top right hand side of the page. Type in a word and the whole book will be searched. You can also look the word up on the internet

• The table of contents allows you to jump to a particular chapter. Access it by tapping on the contents button (second icon along the top of the page)

• Although the iPad automatically adjusts the brightness according to how light or dark it is, you can change the screen brightness by tapping on the icon next the the font menu at the top of the screen
