IQ-2 Properties• 14 magnet coils with 2 independent, 250 KW DC power sources.

The coils can be operated with an axial uniform magnetic field profile, a profile with a diverging magnetic field, or a mirror field.

• 2 independent hot plate sources (West and East) that can produce K or Cs plasmas, or a combination. The hot plates are 2.5” (6.35 cm) in diameter and made of tantalum. The hot plates are welded onto Ta cups which contain the spiral Ta filaments for electron bombardment heating. The cups are sealed and evacuated with separate pumps, so the hot plates can be operated in the presence of neutral gas in the main chamber at pressures up to 10 mtorr.

• Separate atomic beam ovens (not shown in the schematic) are available for both hot plate sources

• There is diagnostic access from both ends and radially through 20 side ports. There is an axial probe drive that can move a probe from one hot plate to the other hot plate, and radially along the horizontal diameter.

• The East hot plate source is mounted on a movable cart assembly which can easily removed leaving the east end available. The West hot plate assembly can also be removed.
