Nearly 60% (17 million acres) of the states’ 28 million acres are forested – so it’s no surprise that Pennsylvania means ‘Penns’ Woods’!

As a result the state provides the chance to experience a bolder, bigger and brighter fall season in the US.

The Pennsylvania Wilds (www.pawilds.com) offers more than two million acres of public land used for recreational enjoyment, including hundreds of miles of backpacking trails, bike paths, trout fishing streams and the largest free roaming elk herd in the east.

Over 500 elk roam the county and September and October, the mating season, is the perfect time to observe or photograph these naturally shy creatures in their majestic splendour. The Pennsylvania Game Commission (www.pgc.state.pa.us) lists a series of safe public viewing sites.

The Wilds are home to natural wonders such as the 1000ft deep Pine Creek Gorge, the Allegheny National Forest, and the dark skies of Cherry Springs State Park, ideal for stargazing.

The Pocono Mountains region is home to rolling mountain terrain, breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls, thriving woodlands and 170 miles of winding rivers, and is an ideal destination to revel in the fall foliage.

White lions on the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, South Africa

A pride of white lions has been released into Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, situated in the Klein Karoo regions of the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

Over the past decades, white lions have been isolated to breeding programmes and circuses, and there have been very few reported sightings of these rare big cats in natural environments.

As a result, it has been widely assumed that the recessive gene in the lions producing the unusual colouring is bordering on extinction.

In 2003, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve procured two white lions, one male and one female as the basis for re-establishing the first wild, self-sustaining white lions since their removal from the Timbavati region in the 1970’s.

The Shamwari Dubai World Conservation team at Sanbona has successful released an integrated lion pride (including two adult males and two juvenile female white lions) into 40 000 hectares of wild land with herds of potential prey species.
