On Tuesday April 8, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Natalia and Luisa, our

mentors and Intern Coordinators in the Department of Human Resources, for a

short interview regarding their views on the 18th MOAS/PC. These women really

know their stuff and have some great advice…so read on up!

By Marina Romano

Natalia Franco and Luisa Zuffo

Why do you think the MOAS/PC Programis an important part of the internsexperience here at the OAS?

NF: As the Coordinating Team of the OASInternship Program, we think it is veryimportant that when you do an internshipin any organization or company, youshould know its core and the way itfunctions. With the Model that we aredoing with the interns, regardless ofwhere you are doing your internship, youwill have a better understanding of whatthe OAS is, what the Permanent Councilis, and how it functions. At the end, this isthe decision-making process in theOrganization and it is where all theprojects come from. Even if you are in theadministrative part of the Organization, orin project development, what we do on adaily basis come from the decisions madeby the governing bodies of the OAS, such

as the Permanent Council.

It’s a good way to know how decisionsare made here!

LZ: We believe that the 18 th MOAS/PC isa very interesting opportunity because allthe interns are given the chance topractice their communications skills andnegotiations skills. A lot of interns comewith International Relations backgroundsand other degrees related to that, so thisis a very good opportunity for them toexercise their knowledge

What do you expect the interns will gainthroughout this experience?

NF: I think that when you do aninternship it is always a learningexperience regardless of what you do. Itis something that you can showcase inyour CV, is a way of working in teams, working individually, and improving yourresearch and communications skills.Diplomacy --for all those interns that areinterested in IR or Political Science-- thisis a great way to see what the futurecould look like.

LZ: We hope that you learn the process ofhow to achieve consensus. It is verydifficult to put 34 different countries withdifferent interests together and worktowards one resolution.

What is your opinion on the themeselected for this years’ MOAS/PC -trafficking in persons?

NF: It is not only one of the mostdiscussed themes right now, but theOrganization has four main pillars, andmultidimensional security is one of them.

This is why trafficking in persons is suchan important subject, with a lot of freshand new information. I was mentioningearlier to some interns, for example, Ifyou have an interest in human rights youcan always try to add that approach into

the theme. There are also a lot of peoplethat are very passionate about gender, sothat is also an approach that you can takewith this theme. In fact, regardless of thetheme, you can always approach it withwhatever is most interesting to you inyour field of study.

How can the interns better preparethemselves as we approach the date ofthe Model?

NF: The most important and enrichingpart of the Model is going to be the twodays when the Model takes place, but agood way of preparing is takingadvantage of the tools we have provided.I know that the MOAS Team has put in alot of effort on their website so that allthe interns can access it. Also, a goodway to prepare is by asking, if you don’tknow where to start, there are a lot ofpeople here in the Organization that canhelp you out and guide you in theprocess.

Meet your Secretary General

Marcello

One of my greatest expectations for this model is to know and feel what it means to be part of an OAS Permanent Council meeting, trying then to live this experience the closest I can to reality. Secondly, I hope to get to know more deeply the different countries, challenges and cultures of the Americas, in order to get a better approach to the many solutions to such problems. I would like to improve my oratory and public speaking skills, since this model is mainly focused on multilateral negotiations and communication is thus essential to success.

Moreover, because of its multicultural nature, I would really be happy to strengthen my ability to navigate throw different ways and perceptions of the world, being able to understand all of them. When we attend real Permanent Council sessions, we usually feel all the tension that lies beneath. That is why my contribution as Secretary General to the model will be to facilitate and promote dialogue between delegations while at the same time settling possible disputes and restoring harmony.

I think that the only way to enjoy and take advantage of this model is to allow flow and participate without any fears regarding public speaking, judgments or remarks. One must be self confident since, once again, despite the realistic orientation of the 18th MOAS/PC, we are still all friends and things should go on naturally in this kind of environment.

Marcello is a Mexican Italian living in Barcelona. He is an intern at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights -Registry Section

This internship model provides a great opportunity to gain a deep understanding of how the OAS works.

Some of my personal goals as Chair for this 18th MOAS/PC model experience are:

Improve my public speaking skills

Learn how to successfully facilitate dialogue

In addition, I believe the deeper one's understanding of countries an their positions on different topics is, the more one will be able to participate in dialogue and learn. To be informed and and have an active participation is vital to the success of the Model and a great way to complete our internship!

Bon courage à toutes et à tous !

How’s it going, Ines?

Second Committee Chair:

I hope the model is an opportunity for all of us to gain knowledge of the functioningof the Permanent Council, while we learn and strengthen skills that will be essentialto us as future professional and leaders. For this to happen, our active participationand dedication will be crucial, as well as our openness to dialogue, tolerance andability to compromise.I hope to improve:

My public speaking and leadership skills My negotiation, mediation and decision-making skills.

As chair of the MOAS, the contribution of my role will be to ensure order duringthe sessions, to guide the debate and provide insight and support during thediscussions and the process of drafting of the resolution, all of which will bereached by having thorough knowledge of the topic of trafficking in persons andbeing able to foster dialogue, negotiation and decision-making.

As Human Resources and the MOAS Department have told us, the MOAS/PC isours. This means that it is our commitment what will make it successful andenjoyable. For this reason, I encourage all interns to think of this as a uniqueopportunity the OAS Internship Program gives us to learn about the PermanentCouncil and Organization’s mission and functions in a fun and interactive way.

My recommendation is for everyone to prepare thoroughly for the model, both bymaking research and consulting their country’s mission, as this will give us theconfidence and knowledge we need to have an active participation throughout theentire experience.

In order to make it more interesting, my advice would be to focus the topic oftrafficking in persons on what interests you the most (for example, human rights, gender, rights of the child, or whatever you care about the most!)

Say hello to your General Committee Secretary

Karla

I wanted to participate of the 18th MOAS/PC as Secretary Committee because I think is an excellent opportunity to grow and to meet new challenges. I have very high expectations from every participant present in the session. I plan to have an active and proactive role during the whole model. I hope that the delegates will be enthusiastic, open minded and that they will do their best to serve as responsible delegates who will be willing to solve the problems that come up along the sessions and every changing environment without losing sight of what representing a country means. I think that the most challenging thing will be working as group to come up with a resolution

From this experience I hope to improve my:

decision-making abilities both as an individual and as a collective group

Fast and effective measures.

Writing skills.

Speaking skills. hold joint responsibility for decisions and actions taken as a member of the authorities.

In addition, I will be responsible along with the other authorities for ensuring that all decisions are taken in the best interests of the 18th MOAS/PC and that the role is carried out effectively. It is very important a proactive participation from everybody and I also think that we all should demonstrate integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and most of all leadership.

What’s up, Mariana? Second Committee Secretary

I hope to learn and have a lot of fun! I know it sounds odd, but in my hometown, models are very popular among university students and they do it just for fun, I swear! Put yourself in the shoes of a foreign-policy decision-maker and understands the concerns and idiosyncrasies of that particular individual and the country he/she represents is very interesting and challenging and can be also very fun. I hope that the participants are able to have nice discussions from a foreign perspective and they can enjoy the experience.

In addition I hope to:

Develop rhetorical skills in English

Improve my negotiation abilities

Learn about trafficking in persons and the process of drafting international legislations.

I also hope that my role will contribute that the delegates/others interns have a wonderful experience!

How can participants enjoy and take advantage of 18th MOAS/PC?

Embracing the character she/he is supposed to play in order to relate to the other person's mindset. Try to understand other people's perspectives and interests so as to craft a proposal that seems to be satisfactory to multiple stakeholders.

Mariana is from Brazil, she interns at the Department of Legal Coopration
