Until 2002, I never had any intention of leaving the corporate world where I wasworking and joining a non-profit organisation. It so happened that in early 2003,I applied for the post of Assistant Director - Human Resource Management atThe Leprosy Mission Trust India (TLMTI). A panel, including late Dr C.S. Walter, the then Country Director, and Dr Jeyakumar Daniel, the then Deputy Director –Finance and Projects interviewed me for the job. More than a job interview, it wasa discussion on how my competencies could be used by the Mission. On thesame day evening, Mr Rath, the then Assistant Director – Human ResourceManagement called me up and offered me the job. Such quick response was apleasant surprise. It was a providential break in my career.
I come from a non-Christian background and received the Lord much later in life.Working in the Mission turned around my personal and professional life. TheMission strengthened my faith, and I am thankful to God for that. The morningdevotions in the office helped me read the Word of God, meditate on it and shareit with my colleagues. My spiritual life was like a plant that needed muchwatering. Here, at the Mission, God created circumstances to nurture my innerman and my relationship with God.
I was a contract employee with the Mission from 2003. After my contract got overin 2008, I left the Mission in 2009 and joined Action Aid India. Working with ActionAid never seemed like a break from the Mission - I was in touch with my formercolleagues in the Mission all through. In Action Aid, God equipped me with newskills, like community-based advocacy, fundraising, finance and auditing, which Icould later use in the Mission, when I rejoined it in 2011. Some of these were thefocus areas of TLMTI’s Country Strategy 2011-15. God brought me to theMission, and then took me out to Action Aid India, re-skilled me in the future focusareas of the Mission and brought me back to the Mission, so that I could be asuitable instrument in His hands.
The Mission gave me opportunities to experiment with organisational changemanagement, which is my passion. I have a rich and fulfilling relationship witheveryone in the Mission - from Board members to all levels of staff. They all stoodby me in my times of troubles. An incident I remember is, when I had severe facialpalsy, my friends and colleagues at the Mission supported me with their prayers.I was healed miraculously. God has worked in my life in ways much moregraciously than I could ever imagine. His promise, “If you believe, you will receivewhatever you ask for in prayer” (Matthew 21:22) strengthens me. I’ve learnt thatGod answers the prayers of those who trust him with a childlike faith!
