4 THE INSTITUTE REPORT
A t the open ing cerem ony o f the new laboratories, P resident Perkins
review ed origins o f the Institu te, includ ing the R esearch L ab oratory fo r
D iseases o f D ogs, and com m ented u pon its progress. H e stated that the
begin ning in 1 9 5 0 was m odest and consisted o f tw o professors w ho w orked
p art-tim e on research , a grad u ate student, and a technical staff o f three, w ith
an annual op eratin g budget o f $ 2 7 ,0 0 0 . O f p rim ary im p ortance was a build
ing constructed at that tim e fo r the C ornell R esearch Laboratory fo r D iseases
o f D ogs. T h is origin al building had tw o m ain sections fo r w orkers, the
D aynem outh D ivision , given by the late C olonel and M rs. Lee G arn ett D ay,
and the G irald a D ivision , given by M rs. G erald in e R ock efeller D od g e. E ach
division had a laboratory and an office. T h e rem aind er consisted o f carefully
designed individual units, allow in g uncontam inated w ork w ith viral and oth er
infectious diseases. T h ro u g h the years, w ith additional w orkers and students,
the offices w ere con verted into sm all additional laboratories, and several
w orkers w ere crow ded together. T his w as not a satisfactory arrangem ent fo r
controlled w ork w ith infectious organism s, and there w as no space fo r m uch-
needed m od ern technical equipm ent. N o w , w ith com pletion o f the new
building, the D ayn em ou th and G irald a D ivisions h ave been restored to their
fo rm er effective design o f tw o laboratories and offices, and is supplem ented
by the new building w hich contains six laboratories and offices in addition to
special room s fo r equipm ent. L aboratories designed fo r studies in p arasitology
and in biochem istry have been added.
T h e In stitu te staff n ow consists o f 4 8 persons, includ ing six fu ll-tim e
research p rofessors, fo u r grad u ate assistants, and five con sultan t professors.
C osts throu gh the years, o f course, have increased corresp on d in gly . B ecause
the C orn ell R esearch L ab oratory fo r D iseases o f D o g s is supported entirely
fro m funds provided by those interested in the w elfare o f dogs and in the
developm ent o f basic and fu n dam ental know ledge con cern in g infectious
diseases, im m unology, and o th er factors that influence health, g ro w th o f the
In stitu te has been con trolled by the am ou nt o f support available. Fortun ately ,
individual con trib utors n ot only h ave grow n in num ber but also h ave increased
their contributions and rem ained steadfast.
In the beginning, there were no philanthropic foundations interested in
supporting the Institute. N ow there are 2 2 , as can be seen in A cknow ledg
ments. A nd of noteworthy significance has been the grow ing support from
kennel and breed clubs. T he Cornell Research Laboratory fo r Diseases of
D ogs was built a t the request o f and fo r the benefit o f dog owners throughout
the w orld; as a general rule, many o f these individuals belong to kennel clubs.
THE INSTITUTE REPORT 5
T he thought often has been expressed that contributions from kennel clubs
alone could support an excellent research program , if only each kennel club
w ere to assume a responsibility to contribute in keeping w ith its m em bership,
either together as a club or as individuals. From the very beginning, the
doctors o f veterinary m edicine have supported the Institute, and, in addition
many medical m en and scientists have done so.
In a continuation o f his speech, Presiden t Perkins sum m arized acco m
plishm ents o f the Institu te in education by sp read in g k now led ge throu gh
grad u ate students and p ost-grad uate scholars fro m this cou ntry and fro m
foreign countries. E ig h t students h ave been aw arded the M .S . degree and
17 have received the P h .D . degree, w ith m ajors in v irology, w hile 1 4 p ost
g rad u ate students h ave been sent h ere on fellow ships in o rd er to im prove
their ow n educational and scientific background. T h e re h ave been 2 2 6 tech
nical papers published by w orkers o f this In stitu te since it began o p eration ;
the know ledge gained throu gh this research has been o f value to help the
health o f dogs, eith er by vaccines o r procedures co n cern in g im m unology and
o f n utrition , m an agem en t, and housing.
A brief m ention will be m ade o f some o f the w ork now in progress in
order to indicate its scope and diversity.
Better understanding was obtained of the protection given puppies by
measles vaccine after basic know ledge was gained through fluorescent antibody
studies on the gradual spread o f distem per virus throughout the body. Spread
o f the natural virulent disease was com pared to that follow ing a vaccination
w ith heterotypic measles vaccine. T he measles vaccine was found to accelerate
production o f antibody which was effective against virulent distem per virus,
and in so doing, the accelerated antibody destroyed distem per virus in the
puppy’s body before it could cause illness. T he thymus, now know n to be
im portant in general resistance to disease o f the young, rem ained norm al in
puppies protected by measles vaccine, although it was com pletely destroyed
in dogs that had natural distem per, and this seemed to lead to either death
or long chronic illness.
W h e n w ork began in the C ornell R esearch L ab oratory fo r D iseases o f
D ogs in 1 9 5 0 , only tw o viral diseases o f dogs w ere com m only recogn ized :
D istem p er and rabies. N o w w e know o f s ix : d istem per, rabies, hepatitis,
parainfluenza virus ( S V 5 ) , herpesvirus, and reovirus. Studies h ave been
m ad e o f all o f these diseases in o rd er to evaluate th eir effects upon the health
o f dogs. A re any o f them , especially S V 5, im p ortan t in the an noyin g syn
d rom e o f kennel co u g h ? W o u ld vaccination be w orth w h ile?
6 THE INSTITUTE REPORT
C anine brucellosis, caused n ot by a virus but a bacterium , has been
recognized as w idespread in certain breeds, and now has been fou n d in 3 8
states. N o breeds are im m une. H ow m any dogs are en d an gered ? Because
o th er species o f B ru cella can in fect m an, is th ere a hum an hazard to dog
ow ners and those w ho h and le dogs ? C an dogs be im m unized by vaccination ,
and, in con ju nction w ith blood tests, can this dangerous organ ism be elim
inated? B rucellosis in dogs has becom e so im p ortant that the Federal B ureau
concerned w ith brucellosis has assigned a m em ber o f its staff to p articip ate in
the w ork here.
D o g n utrition is in a h igh state o f p erfectio n , but do w e know all that
needs to be k n o w n ? Studies h ave show n that at least tw o vitam ins can affect
the antibody fo rm ation necessary to overcom e d istem p er virus o r o th er in
fections. In addition , is the quantity o f caloric intake o r the quality o f the
fo o d ingested m ainly responsible fo r good health and vigorous p e rfo rm an ce?
A lso , can fo rm ation o f bone and d evelopm ent o f teeth be influenced by
n u tritio n ? T h ese problem s h ave received p relim inary studies, but now can
be expanded w ith the new facilities and equipm ent available.
Parasites are being studied in the enlarged p rogram . D og s h ave co c
cidiosis, a p rotozoan disease considered by som e w orkers to be o f m in or
im portance, but by others to be a significant health p roblem . C occidiosis is
o f com m on occu rren ce in d og s; it rarely kills, but causes n oticeable and u n
pleasant effects, am on g w hich is d iarrhea. In addition to loss o f w eigh t and
u nthriftiness, d iarrh ea in a house p et is w orthy o f attention, especially if
severe and p ro lo n g ed , even though death does n ot occur.
D og s that develop physical defects now w ill receive m uch attention.
A lth o u g h defects are o f m ajo r im portance, they are n ot studied easily because
o f the com p lexity o f the p roblem . F actors to be considered are heredity,
con gen ital o r n utritional conditions, toxicities, and infectious diseases. A
m od ern approach m ust be biochem ical in ord er to p rodu ce a basis fo r con trol.
U n d er the d irection o f a recent addition to the staff, a biochem ist, w orkin g
in the new , w ell equipped biochem ical laboratory, studies h ave begun upon
und erstand in g such defects as com pletely as possible. W o rk has begun w ith
hip dysplasia, w hich by m any d og ow ners, is considered to be a m ost d am agin g
d efect w hose solution is w orthy o f any effort.
This recording spectrophotom eter, which analyzes solutions for various materials, is essential fo r biochem ical work.

This equipment, called a lyophilizer, allows proteins, such as viruses, to be dried under high vacuum from the frozen state, to be stored fo r future use.
The liquid scintillation counter, by analysis o f radioactive tagged elements, makes possible m etabolic studies o f various nutrients.
