THE SMARTER E EUROPE:
EXPERIENCE INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS
IN A DYNAMIC SETTING
2 | 3
The transition to renewable energy, decarbonization and digitalization is bringing lasting changes to the energy world. The old system was static and centralized, with just a handful of large-scale fossil fuel and nuclear power plants supplying consumers with energy. A new, decentralized system is now emerging which relies primarily on photovoltaics and wind power and has many more active participants. An increasing number of homeowners and companies are becoming prosumers – generating, consuming and storing their own energy, using platforms to share it with others, selling it themselves or via aggregators at energy exchanges, or feeding it back into the grid. And the previously separate sectors of electricity, heating, cooling and mobility are becoming more and more interconnected, for example with heat pumps, other power-to-heat solutions, cogeneration systems, fuel cells or e-mobility. Sector coupling is also helping to enable rational, climate-friendly utilization of excess wind and solar power. There is a growing trend for charging electric vehicles using solar power from the owner’s own roof and, as a next step,
integrating these vehicles’ batteries into the grid to help with stability and load shifting. The foundation and driving force of this new, increasingly interconnected and decentralized energy world is the process of digitalization, and the rapidly evolving possibilities which it offers for gathering, exchanging and storing data. For example, blockchain technology can help us achieve greater efficiency and transparency alongside lower prices when marketing solar power, even locally in small quantities, or combining battery storage systems to form virtual power plants. Change is on the horizon in key energy markets – in particular, the state subsidies funding many photovoltaic installations will soon be coming to an end, with the guaranteed feed-in tariffs paid under Germany’s Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) set to be phased out from 2021 onwards. In this light, business models involving direct marketing and smart self-consumption of solar power are becoming all the more important. This is also the perfect time for start-ups, whose fresh ideas are helping build the energy world of tomorrow.

E-mobility is emerging as a major trend. Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly appealing for car fleet operators, companies and private individuals. The coming years will see hundreds of thousands of new electric vehicles on the roads and millions more charging stations installed, and fully half of these will be financed by private investors. Electric vehicles could make up around a third of all newly registered vehicles worldwide as soon as 2030. The forecast is clearly encouraging for the market and opens up new potential.
This is precisely where Power2Drive Europe comes in. The international exhibition for charging infrastructure and electromobility gives an overview of industry developments, trends and technologies. Exhibitors at Power2Drive Europe will present technical innovations for fun green driving, as well as solutions for charging infrastructure in public and private spaces. They will also display sophisticated systems for combining renewable energies and e-mobility and
for successfully developing the necessary infrastructure. And they will offer industry professionals a closer look at groundbreaking vehicle concepts.
Power2Drive Europe was launched in Munich in 2018 as part of the innovation hub The smarter E Europe, and was an immediate success with both exhibitors and visitors. 148 suppliers presented their innovations for charging infrastructure and e-mobility.
Do you work with products and innovations in the field of e-mobility? Then don’t miss out – book a booth at Power2Drive Europe in Munich now and help shape the future of the global transport transition.

Our energy supply is undergoing rapid and significant change. Digitalization, decentralization and sector coupling – these are the buzzwords of the modern energy future. Electricity, heat and cooling energy are increasingly being produced right where they are needed, in factories and commercial buildings, in large residential buildings and in neighborhoods. Various methods of generation are used, from photovoltaics to wind power to decentralized heat/power-generation units, biomass and heat pumps. Smart solutions are needed to bring electricity from decentralized plants directly to the consumer.
Generation, storage, distribution and use must be interlinked and coordinated with each other as closely as possible. Advanced energy management systems and new business models can equip our energy supply for the future.
