Black Sabbath: An Oral History -Mike Stark and Dave Marsh

A reasonable account of the early days of metal and its slow descent out of the hippie and biker positive hedonism of the day into a new and darker persona. Extensive material on Sabbath personalities and attitudes regarding the creation and presentation of their music.

'Sound Of The Beast' -Ian Christe

One of the best general histories of heavy metal, Sound Of The Beast covers all the different genres and is organized very well. It also features easy to digest lists and bullet points about the various subgenres of metal.

'Lords Of Chaos' -Michael Moynihan

A disturbing story of the Norweigan black metal scene, where churches are burned and people are murdered, Lords Of Chaos is a combination of true crime and heavy metal. Make sure to get the newer edition that updates some of the legal proceedings.

Denim Morrison

Morbid Curiosity began as a writing project over the internet between friends Devon Meyer, 20 - guitar/vocals, and Cale Sharp, 22 - guitar. When the two friends finally found themselves in Prince George together again they decided to continue writing and start a band. The line up has changed a bit since then, but along with Devon and Cale the line up now includes Aaron McKitrick, 20 - vocals, and Logan Casavant, 19 - drums/vocals. These guys don’t seem to be slowed down by anything (including not having a regu-lar jam space) and the love they have for what they do seems to be all they need to keep writing and performing. They have a new EP coming out this spring and have just finished planning a summer tour to support it.

I have to admit that, despite being a highly recommended new band, I have never seen these guys live. But, I was lucky enough to conduct an interview with Aaron and the rest of the guys over e-mails and I got to learn a bit more about dedication, sarcasm, and Morbid Curiosity. Check it out!

(I know this question can suck) What genre of music do you consider your work to be?

Breakdowns and Choir Boys, also hardcore.

Who are your major influences? What other types of music do you listen too?

Lyrically and vocally: The Human Abstract, Protest the Hero, BT-BAM, Oh, Sleeper and Dethklok, to name a few. Instrument wise: August Burns Red, Vanna, Bring me the Horizon, and Architects. We listen to pretty much all music, pop, hardcore, indie, hip-hop, and all that jazz. Unless someone is whining about their truck or dog, we will probably listen to it.

The name Morbid Curiosity is a pretty brutal name. Why did you go with that name? Did you ever call yourselves anything different?

We came up with the name one drunken night brainstorming.

We were just tossing ideas back and forth and landed on Morbid Curiosity. The whole idea of it at the time was a joke towards what local metal has become, it wasn’t about being ‘brutal’, it was more about writing to please ourselves, rather than the audience or our friends. Originally, we were called Adrasteia, but a disagreement between members led to the name change.

How long has Morbid Curiosity been together? What inspired you to make music together?

Morbid Curiosity, as a writing team, came together in December

of 2008. Cale and Devon lived in different towns and wrote dozens of songs back and forth over the internet. When Cale came back to town, they sought out other members and after months of gruelling search found Logan banging on a dumpster with such grace that the skies parted, and eventually Aaron, caged with the bears in the Yukon.

Are there any other forms of art (movies, books etc) that influence your writing?

Romantic novels and Calculus textbooks. But seriously, Playboy,

Times Magazine, and of course, The Informer.

How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?

The songs actually make sense now (not just breakdown, break-

down, choir, breakdown, choir.) It makes more sense melodically and doesn’t sound like four guys took four songs and selected the best riffs to make one song. We actually have people criticizing each instrument now, so it’s not just one person writing.

How do you feel about maintaining an ‘Online’ presence for your band? How has it helped you? Where can metal fans find you guys?

Maintaining an online presence is very important to us, especially

if any travel is considered. We have had several messages from people online just chatting with us and asking if we are coming through there towns, even though they were mostly fat chicks with beards. If we can keep communicating with fans online it gives us somewhere to crash if we are ever around their area, and means more people at shows. The internet is probably the best way to mar-ket yourself as a band these days. If anyone is looking to find us they can check out our myspace, www.myspace.com/morbidcuriositypg, or search for us on Facebook. We always look forward to messages from any fans, whether it is random conversation or criticism.

continued on next page...

page 5 THE INFORMER APRIL 2010 APRIL 2010 THE INFORMER page 14

I noticed there are no vocals on your myspace demos. Are these instrumentals? Or, are you guys still in the middle of recording your demo? If so, when do you hope to have it finished? Tell us what style of vocals do you employ most?

The songs on the myspace are from seven months ago and we

have only had Aaron for two months. We have recorded an EP and it is currently getting mixed. It will feature six beautiful love songs that will melt your hearts. We expect it to be done by the end of March, at the latest. We have a large array of vocal styles, singing, screaming, chanting, gang vocals, some spoken word, and even a little scatting. Devon and Aaron do a lot of vocal work together to bring our sound together.

Any tour plans to support the new recording? We are actually planning a two week tour in August that will take

us up north through BC, south through Alberta and then west to the Island and back home. It’s been hell trying to get a hold of some promoters, but it looks like it is going to turn out quite well.

As a band, have you guys ever experienced any major set backs (band members leaving, etc)? How did you deal with them?

We have lost two members since we have started, but it hasn’t

slowed us down at all. As long as we have our guitars and drums and breath in our lungs, I don’t see us being set back too much by it. We are currently looking for a bass player, so if anyone is interested, feel free to try out.

Can you name some of the places you’ve played? Any

particularly good show stories? When and where are you playing next?

In Morbid Curiosity, we have only played in town thus far.

But our next show is in Mackenzie on April 9th and we expect everyone from PG to drive there with us. A good show story is at every show when we tell the story behind Semen Faceplant and Cale gets shy and tries to walk off stage! That’s always a good time.

Who have you shared the stage with? Any local interior B.C. bands you want to play with that you haven’t yet?

We have shared the stage with Remove the Doubt, Primal Stance,

Abrogation’s Crown, Eve of Ostara, Seraphic Nihilist, Conceive and Devour, Born in Ruin, Vale of Hinnom, Autointoxication and Rara. We aren’t picky with who we will play with, if someone asked us to play at a pop show, we would do it. All we want to do is play our music wherever and whenever we can.

So what’s the ultimate plan? Do you see yourselves pushing this band until your rich and famous?

We will push this band until we are sleeping under a bridge like

trolls. Or until we are rich and famous. A wise man once said, “Get rich or die tryin”.

interview continued

What do you think has been your biggest challenge as a band? Any advice to other bands that may have to deal with these same issues?

Finding a solid jam space has been tough for us. We’ve had to

relocate our jam space a few times to accommodate others. It’s hard to give advice on something like this because everyone has a different reason for having to leave a jam space. The only thing we can say is tough it out and jam wherever you can. Use the streets if you have to, but jam your hearts out.

Could you briefly describe your music-making process? Is there a main writer in the band or do you guys contribute equally?

Someone writes a riff, then someone else writes a riff, then we

decide if they sound good together and if they do Logan plays some drums and Aaron writes some vocals. We usually get stuck there for a few jams until someone else writes another riff, and so on. That or, Guitar Pro. Because it’s our best friend. Aaron wrote vocals to our first 5 songs using midi exports from Guitar Pro, it was way better than jamming.

What are your rehearsals generally like? Do you have a set time each week in which you practice or are rehearsals more spontaneous?

We jam pretty much whenever Aaron calls everyone to tell them

to jam. None of us are working right now, so we can jam whenever we want, jam space permitting.

Any advice for the kids who want to form their own bands? Don’t do it, you suck. We’re just kidding. Try to create what you

want, original or not, just do what makes you happy. We’ve seen too many bands fall apart because one member doesn’t get to do what their musical influence tells them to. Find people that are into the same style as you. And don’t forget to listen to Between the Buried and Me, because they are infinite music.

Is there anyone you want to give shout outs too? All the people helping with booking the tour and everyone that

has decided to come along with us. Anyone that has ever sold us an instrument or has or intends to come listen to us. Mathias Rock, for helping us record our EP and put in the man hour to mix that shit. Hailie Beaulieu from Wonderland Photography, Mark Pye From The Informer for everything he’s done for us. And all the lovely ladies on the road that will let us sleep on their couches, we thank you the most.

Any last words? Please buy our EP; we don’t want to be homeless forever.

16 years ago I was lying in a hospital bed in the intensive care unit with tubes down my throat, I.V. needles in my neck and arms, severely medicated and not knowing if I was going to make it out alive. The following story is a recollection of how I managed to cheat death and come out alive.

Act IIt was spring break 1994, I was 18 and in

my final year of high school. I was visiting friends in Vanderhoof, having a few drinks and such, when for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to take a drive. I’m not sure why but we ended up at the Hydro Substation just outside of town. We proceeded drinking and smoking outside of the compound. At some point in time I decided to jump the fence and go in, despite the warning signs posted all around. A couple of us made our way up onto a large green box (about eight feet tall) and made our way over to the conductor. I realized that if I put my hand close to it that the electricity would make it's way over to my fingers in the form of something that looked like lightning, kind of like one of those balls at Science World. Now at this point you are probably thinking what an idiot, but we were too messed up to clue in that this was a bad idea because it looked so cool. So I played around with that for a minute until my friend asked what would happen if I put my hand near the top of the conductor. That's when things turned bad. By putting my hand near the top I grounded out the conductor and in an extremely bright explosion of electricity I took 250,000 volts of electricity, shutting down the power to Vanderhoof and the surrounding towns. I was blown back who knows how many feet, knocked out and was on fire. Luckily one of my friends (who is now my wife) regained sight and put the fire out. The other two friends were still having a hard time seeing but eventually went for help and called the

My story of cheating death.

ambulance. At this point in time I was in severe shock and was worried about getting in trouble and fell off the box head first, which didn't help matters at all. I can't remember much after I was electrocuted but that was what I was told. The ambulance finally showed up and took me to Vanderhoof hospital, were I was then transfered by helicop-ter to Vancouver. Things were not looking good as I was in critical condi-tion and they didn't know if I would survive.

Act IIWhen I came to in the Vancouver burn

unit I was really out of it. Drugged up on Morphine, tubes and wires in my body and still in shock. I recall them saying they weren't sure if I was going to make it because they didn't know what internal damage had been done. The doctors also said they might have to amputate my arm because it was swelling up so much and was not in very good condition. Fortunately they decided to cut it open first to see if that helped and luckily it did. I still have my arm, scarred but none the less still there. From this point forth I slowly started to get better, but it wasn't over yet. I spend a month and a half in the burn unit, most of the time drugged right out. I had to get my wounds cleaned everyday which is the most pain I have ever succumbed to, and I had to have five skin graph operations in which I had to lay still in bed for five days after each one. After being in bed for so long I had trouble walking and had to basically learn to walk again. After a month and a half I was glad to go home. But it still wasn't the end of my battle.

Act IIIDuring the next six months I had to

attend intense physiotherapy sessions to regain movement of my body and limbs. I also had to wear a splint on my arm to straighten it out due to the scar tissue. This was also very painful as it split the skin open at the joint of my arm, but it was necessary for full move-ment because scar tissue contracts. Also, I had to wear a body suit specially designed for burn victims that helped keep the scarring down.

ConclusionAlthough I have scarring on about

40% of my body I managed to recover from this accident with almost full movement of my arm and no internal damage. I am very lucky to be alive. My friends were all right accept for having trouble seeing for a few days and obviously a little shock. We were all going to be charged for entering the Substation, but I guess they thought we had been put through enough already. I was later approached by a B.C. Hydro employee and he said there was so much electricity at the time of the explosion that we all should have been turned to dust. I guess we are all lucky to be alive.

I wrote this account of my story in hopes to bring awareness to the fact that we are not immortal or unsusceptible to accidents. We are however responsible for our decisions in life, and while I don't think you will be as stupid as to enter a Hydro Substation, I want you to think about your choices and make wise ones; under the influence and not.

M

that looked like lightning...
