The Era of Convergence

• Also known as the “Information Age.”• Four periods of innovation that have built on

each other and converged to change the world. • Each period is defined by the type of innovations

that created hugely successful companies during those years.

• They identify what you should have been working on if you wanted to get really rich at that time.

1. The Hardware Period

• Development of “Thinking Machines”

• Started around 1900, and lasted through the rise of the IBM PC and the Macintosh in the early 1980s

• IBM, Intel, AMD, Motorola, Apple,Texas Instruments

2. The Software Period

• Development of instructions for doing “stuff” with the machines

• Started with the broad penetration of the IBM PC in the mid 1980s, and lasted through the early 1990s

• Microsoft, Lotus, WordPerfect

3. The Communications Period

• Development of capabilities for machines to talk to one another

• Began with the broad acceptance of modems and BBS systems in the early 1990s, and stretched into networks and the Internet in the late 1990s

• US Robotics, 3Com, Global Crossing, AOL, Netscape, Cisco, Novell

4. The Business Process Period

• Redesign of how business transactions occur, and development of new types of business transactions

• Started with the broad acceptance of the Internet in the late 1990s, and still occurring today
