India is a subcontinent of Asia. India is separated from the rest of

Asia by the Himalaya Mountains.– Its highest peak, Mount Everest stand

29,035 feet high!

The Indus River

The Indus River begins as an icy stream high in the Himalaya Mountains.

It flows from the Himalaya south to the Arabian Sea.

The Indus River flows 1,800 miles

The River’s Gift

The Indus River flows through China, Pakistan, and India.

It flows swiftly down the mountains and slows down on the flat, dry Indus Plain.

The River’s Gift (cont.)

During the spring flood, the river spreads silt across the Indus Plain.– Twice as much as the mighty Nile!!

Like the Nile, the Indus branches into a huge delta before it reaches the Arabian Sea.

Like people of Egypt, they depended on the floods to bring rich silt.

Like Mesopotamians, they built cities with temples.

Indus Valley Agriculture Around 6000 B.C.

people began farming in the Indus Valley.

They grew– Wheat, barley, beans,

and sesame. Crops grew quickly in

the hot climate. Farmers planted and

harvested crops twice a year!

Working with the Enviorment

Harvest was not guaranteed in the Indus Valley. Flood walls did not always protect crops and

villages. Tiger, jackals and wild pigs endangered farmers. Deer and birds often ate crops.

To have a successful harvest, Indus Valley farmers had to be alert

to many dangers!
