The Indians used their buffalo skin for many items such as tipis, decorations, and weapons  but most buffalo of the hide was saved for clothing. Most Indian men wore moccasins for shoes and the women wore a slipper kind of shoe. Some women had leather leggings for pants but others just wore buffalo hided leggings. Men usually did not wear shirts but if so, they would wear special buckskin war shirts. Women wore the buckskin shirts with leggings or wore long dresses made out of buffalo hide. If the Pawnees had enough extra buffalo skin, they would attach a long cape to the women’s long dress as an decoration. Most dresses had tie-long sleeves if they were cold. Women often wore belts from which they hung leather pouches that contained useful items such as knives, flint, and sewing awls.

The Pawnee Indians ate many foods. After a buffalo kill, an adult might eat as much as 4 pounds of meat a day. Pawnee people ate thin slices of raw meat from the buffalo’s hump or feasted on the perishable parts - the liver, blood, brains, and kidneys. These soft foods were easy for young children and toothless people to suck and swallow. They always left the heart for the buffalo spirit to take and keep as a sign of thanks from the people to let them have the buffalo. Puddings were made from ground turnips, or berries mixed in with fresh blood. Pemmican was made by drying buffalo meat and then pounding it with a stone into a paste that was mixed with fat berries. This mixture was shaped into cakes. One of the Pawnees favorite food was a stew made of vegetables and buffalo meat. Another was a sausage dish made by stuffing meats and kidney suet into a cleansed buffalo intestine.

Indians would hang buffalo meat on branches for a few days so it could turn into buffalo jerky which lasted for months

The Pawnee lived in the great plains, but they moved throughout Nebraska, Colorado and Kansas. The tribe was forced to move to a reservation in Oklahoma in the 1800’s. Most Pawnee people are still living there today! Sometimes, when the Pawnees knew their enemies had found their new home, they would move to a new area on the plains. Some Pawnees walk away from their tribe home to get supplies, they would have a hard time finding it again.
