1. Baroda Branch Participation in 6th Welding Research & Collaboration Colloquium (7-9 April 2016)

International Institute of Welding, 6th Welding Research and Collaboration Colloquium were held during 7-9 April 2016, Hyderabad. It was attended by many of IIW Baroda Branch Members. Welding Research Group (PDPU, Gandhinagar), ITER India & IPR presented few research papers at colloquium. Colloquium was followed by visit at ARCI.

2. 18th AGM of IIW Baroda Branch

The 18th AGM of IIW, Baroda Branch was held on 21st May, 2016 at Hotel Suba Elite, Fatehgunj, Vadodara at 8 P.M. The Chairman Mr. D. V. Acharya conducted the meeting. In his welcome address, Mr. D. V. Acharya shared with a great pleasure that IIW Baroda Branch received Best Performing Branch Award “Minati Bhattacharya A ward” for the year 2014-15 consecutively for 3rd Year. He informed members that this time also, national level best welding engineer is from Baroda Branch. He thanked all the members for their continuous support, hard work, initiatives & team work for achieving this important milestone for Baroda Branch. The 18th Annual Report of the year ended on 31st March, 2016 was presented by the Hon. Secretary, Mr. Rajesh Madnani. He briefed about the activities carried out by IIW Baroda Branch in the year 2015-16. At the end, he

acknowledged support received from various organizations, institutions, individuals & branch committee members throughout the year. Mr. Pravin Virmani, on behalf of Hon. Treasurer Mr. Jayesh Patel, presented the statement of Accounts for the year ended on 31st March, 2016. Approval of auditor’s appointment for the year 2016-17 was also taken in the meeting. There was no counter nomination for any post. Hence, returning office (Prof. (Dr.) S. N. Soman) announced names of office bearers and committee members for the year 2016-17 as recommended by the outgoing Managing committee. The incoming Chairman, Mr. D. V. Acharya, then addressed the general body with the vision for the year 2016-17. He narrated about various activities scheduled at various locations as a part of national level golden jubilee celebrations in this year. Mr. R. Srinivasan, President – IIW India was also present in the annual general meeting. He felicitated with certificate & cash reward to Baroda Branch Best Welders & National Level Best welding engineer. Mr. R. Srinivasan, President – IIW India, then addressed the gathering giving details about various activities planned for golden jubilee celebration in this year. for e.g. inter-school quiz competition at Kalpakkam, NWM 2016 at Pune, Young Professional workshop at Baroda, Skill development conference at Delhi. He appreciated Baroda Branch for being active branch & impressed by activities conducted by Baroda branch team to cover various segments of industries. At the end, Mr. Gautam Gohil, Jt. Secretary proposed vote of thanks. He thanked Mr. R. Srinivasan, President-IIW India for sparing their valuable time and all members for their valuable support.

3. Baroda Branch Managing Committee Member Dr. Vishvesh Badheka attended 11th International Symposium on Friction Stir Welding at TWI

11th International Symposium on Friction Stir Welding was held during 17-19 May 2016, at TWI Ltd. Cambridge, UK. It was attended by Dr. Vishvesh J Badheka and Dr. Abhishek Kumar of Welding Research Group of the Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU), Gandhinagar. Dr. Badheka presented two research papers of his group includes (1) Friction Stir welding of Cu to SS (2) Influence of pin profile on friction stir processing of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy . Symposium was followed by visit to TWI on 20th May 2016; TWI visit was followed by live demonstrations of the advanced welding processes like FSW, Refill FSSW, EB welding, linear friction welding, NDT & Microscopy labs etc. During the conference they had an opportunity to interact with Dr Wayan Thomas, inventor of the FSW

process at TWI. Additionally Dr Badheka presented “Welding Research at PDPU” presentation at followings places for future collaboration

1) Institute for Manufacturing (IfM), Cambridge University, on 16th May 16, followed by visit of the IfM & Maxwell centre.

2) The Welding Institute (TWI), Cambridge, on 20th May 16. 3) Professor H.K.D.H. Bhadeshia, Department of Material Science and Metallurgy, Cambridge University, on

20th May 16. Visit to the department lab facilities was also held on 16th May.

Interaction with Prof Wayan Thomas (FSW process inventor) & Morry Mohany on 17th May 16 during FSW conference at TWI.
