The Indian Institute of Welding

&

Theme : Welding Technology & Metal Preparation for industrial Growth: Way Ahead 2025

he Indian Institute of Welding is a professional body devoted to the promotion and advancement of welding

science and technology in India. Established in 1966, with its registered office at Kolkata, it has thirteen

branches located at Bangalore, Baroda, Bhilai, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi, Jamshedpur, Kolkata, Mumbai, TTiruchirapalli, Vishakapatnam, Pune and Hyderabad. IIW has over 4000 welding professionals and more than 300

industries as members. With a mission to be the Premier Professional Institute in India for the advancement of

Welding Science & Technology and related activities, IIW India has been involved in human resources

development in Welding in India by .carrying out training and certification of engineers and welders in India

in line with international standards; technology diffusion to the Industry and to the welding community;

encouraging Research & Development in welding; and establishing international standards of quality

for the Indian fabrication industry.

IIW India organises seminars, workshops, training programmes etc.; provide technical guidance

and consultation in welding technology to its members; conduct associate membership

examination; and publish technical journals and periodicals in the field of welding. IIW India is

a member of the International Institute of Welding. lt has its own Authorised National Body

through which it conducts international certification programmes, such as IWE, IWT, IWS

& IWP, of the International Institute of Welding. IlW-India has obtained accreditation

as Authorised National Body for Company Certification (ANBCC) from the

International Institute of Welding through its International Authorisation Board

(IAB) for the exclusive rights within India to operate its Manufacturers

Certification Scheme (MCS) for certification of companies for compliance to the

requirements of ISO 3834. IIW India has its own National Welding Training and

Certification Scheme (NWTCS), which has been prepared to meet the demand of

industry for welders, trained?.. and certified to a level of competency commensurate

with the requirements of any of the welder qualification and certification standards or

codes. IIW India is also closely associated with Prime Minister's Kaushal Vikas Yojana

PMKVY) of National Skill Development Council (NSDC) and Modular Employable Scheme

(MES) of Directorate General of Training (DGT) under Ministry of Skill Development and

Entrepreneurship of government of India.

The activities of Cochin Branch is continue to be more vibrant and is drawn the attention of the industry,

Educational Institutions, Welding Professionals and Students in and around Cochin and in the state of Kerala

as a whole. Through organizing evening Technical Meetings, Seminars at engineering colleges and

institutions, & Technical visits to the industries, the is branch is consistently working to achieve the objectives of

the Institute.

Recently the Branch started skill Development Initiative-SDI Program in association with Don Bosco Tech,

Vaduthala to provide training in Welding Technology to youth as a part of CSR Program of Cochin Shipyard

Limited. IIW got an opportunity to partake the Mega Scheme of the Government of India’s Skill Development

Initiative.

The Branch also expanded its wings spreading into acting as a catalyst between Educational Institutions in developing

strong interaction with the industry to improve the quality of the institution as well as promoting Industrial growth.

COCHIN BRANCH

The Indian Institute of Welding

(IIW INDIA)

For the last few decades, industrial growth in India has taken a fast pace of development after the globalization

process. The growth in the economy of the country has attracted several players across the globe and India is poised

for multifold growth in the area. Recently the Govt. of India declared the policy of “MAKE IN INDIA” with the objective

of transforming India as an International Hub for manufacturing sector. This initiative requires highly skilled

manpower to make Indian products globally competitive. To meet this target, SKILL INDIA campaign was

launched in 2015 with an aim to train over 400 million people in different skills by 2022. As a result, there is a

vivid growth expansion of market such as pharmaceuticals, bio-engineering, nuclear technology,

informatics and technology oriented higher education and India is poised to become major,

manufacturing center. The structural liberalization of Indian economy, which has paved the way for

globalization of each industry has had its impact on core centers such as power, steam, oil, gas,

petrochemicals, and transportation. Hence, there is an imperative need for the manufacturers to

maximize production without compromising on quality and by lowering manufacturing time

and cost. Since welding is widely used in engineering manufacturing process, the welding

industry is also poised for a vibrant change due to the need to introduce high productivity

welding processes, cost effective design and reliable quality control methods.

Also advanced materials ranging from variation of existing metallic materials and

composite to Nano materials and others, which widely differ in their physical and

mechanical properties, are being introduced for industrial use for extended life of

the components. Welding of these materials possess technological challenges

in welding, fabrication in order to development of superior welding process

and quality assurance criteria. Further, the role of information technology and

the need to develop high quality products based on research - industrial

coordination cannot be overlooked.

Skilled development in welding is all set to get major thrust in India in the years to

come, with the launch of the 'MAKE IN INDIA' initiative by the Govt. of India. The welding

technology one of the major fields in the campaign for MAKE IN INDIA.

Ÿ To promote advanced technical welding process and disseminate the latest knowledge in the

field for the professionals, industrialists, academia, faculties, researchers and their institutes and

share their knowledge base in the field of welding technology and related areas.

Ÿ To support Govt. of India in implementing the mission of rapid industrialization through the programs

for MAKE IN INDIA and SKILLED DEVELOPMENT and to enlighten the multinational technology

transformation by involving neighboring countries.

Ÿ To develop and implement latest welding technology and metal preparation within the country to foster the

economic development.

Ÿ To encourage young engineers to strive into more and more R & D activities and to innovate newer products ,

components, devices etc. to reduce manufacturing costs .
