And they were the primary focus of James Dubea's presentaon today. They also served as an introducon to the annual "State of the Port" event scheduled for Monday, June 16, 2014 at Cruise Terminal No. 6, 9242 Charles M. Rowland Dr. Mr. Dubea, Deputy Execuve Director of Government and Strategic Partnerships, has joined the Port Authority aſter 22 years in the United States Coast Guard. He has a BS degree in Informaon Technology Management and a Master's degree in Strategic Leadership from Trident University. In addion he is a graduate of Central Florida Polical Leadership Instute, LEAD Brevard, the Coast Guard's Chief Pey Officer Academy and Chief Warrant Officer Academy. Mr. Dubea is also the Vice- President of the Port Canaveral Propeller Club. The Canaveral Port Authority is a Special District within the hierarchy of the State Government guided by five elected Commissioners and a set of bylaws. Mr. Dubea's work at the Port Authority is accomplished, not only from his Coast Guard experience and training, as well as his educaonal background, but by careful coordinaon of programs and acvies with community leaders and government and internaonal agencies to ensure that Port Canaveral's marime infrastructure is sustained as it expands its local, state and naonal transportaon iniaves. A summaon of some of these iniaves was presented by Mr. Dubea through a descripon of several programs under way and at the planning stage: The port at Canaveral has the potenal to be the deepest and most serviceable among the several along the east coast from Miami to New England. Negoaons have been under way for several years to receive approval and assistance from the United States Army Corps of Engineers to begin the work that will make the Space Coast port the most aracve for internaonal shipping, both cargo and cruise industries. Presently, and with improvements to the port, the Port Authority-owned land will connue to increase in value for renng and leasing purposes. With that will come a parallel increase in jobs for Brevard County. Again, with plans already on the drawing board, dredging and expanding the inlet eventually will bring a change in the moving of cargo internaonally. Foreign goods and products that now, and for generaons, have been trucked or delivered by rail to Florida and the southeastern United States from ports and cies in the north will be unloaded here and moved to markets and industries much closer than Chicago, Philadelphia and New York, to menon a few. Also, opportunies are already presenng themselves with the development of new cruise terminals, cove area development and small businesses leasing available real estate surrounding the port. Also, Jey Park is becoming a larger, friendlier and aracve area for family leisure acvies. Thank you, Mr. Dubea for an excellent presentaon. We are impressed. Those are the four core business lines of the Canaveral Port Authority. And they were the primary focus of James Dubea's presentation today. They also served as an introduction to the annual "State of the Port" event scheduled for Monday, June 16, 2014 at Cruise Terminal No. 6, 9242 Charles M. Rowland Dr.

A TRIBUTE TO MAYA ANGELOU

Active Member Ailish NicPhaidin not only gave a Sad Dollar in memory of Maya An-gelou – American literary figure (36 books, and poems, including “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings”), actress, director, playwright, composer, teacher, singer and dancer (April 4, 1928 – May 28, 2014), she also contributed an original poem to the “memorist” that was printed in the Friday, May 30 issue of Florida Today’s Public Interest section:

DISTRICT CONFERENCE REPORTS: JULIA BABBITT AND LYNDA WORKMAN

The 2014 District 6930 Conference (May 17 – 21) was informative, productive and fun for our two attendees, Julia and Lynda.

After setting up our Club display in the Friendship Room, Friday was a relaxing and get-acquainted afternoon followed by a day and a half of plenary sessions, award presentations, inspirational speakers, assembly-line food packing and entertainment.

Julia attended a session for clubs that are hosting Rotary Exchange Students in 2014-15. Our student from France, Gaelle Lambert, is due to arrive the week of Au-gust 1st. In cooperation with the Rotary Club of Melbourne, Gaelle will be attending Satellite Beach High School. Her first host family resides on Merritt Island.

Lynda volunteered with about 50 other Rotarians in this year’s special International Activity – putting together 10,000 meal boxes to be sent to Haiti. Tables were ar-ranged with identified task assignments. Sacks of foodstuffs, such as beans and rice, were doled out by cups into bags that were carefully weighed before being placed and secured into sealed cartons for shipment. Lynda said it appeared that her table won the unofficial “most-bags-packed” contest.

Both Julia and Lynda felt like “winners” after their three-day experience at Club Med Sandpiper Bay in Port St. Lucie. The Saturday night Sock Hop was “a blast.”

With 58% of our members having donated by May 26, Club Co-Chair for the Rotary Foundation, Larry Cinco, encouraged the other 44% to add their names to the EREY banner with donations in $10 increments. To top his comments Larry presented to Active Member Dick Ballantyne his eighth Paul Harris Foundation pin. Dick is one of several in the Club who is a member of the Paul Harris Society, all of whom have pledged $1,000 a year for ten years to the Rotary Foundation. Now with three rubies in his pin, Dick said that he considers Rotary a great experience.

2014-15 HOLIDAY FUNDRAISER PLANNING COMMITTEE REPORT

Saturday, December 14, 2014 is the date set for the Club’s holiday fundraiser featuring the Central Florida Winds Ensemble. In collaboration with the Rotary Club of Eau Gallie, seven members plus Brenda Marvin of the Eau Gallie Club (Larry and Susan Cinco, Jim Hagerty, Corinne Ishler, Rick Sabino and Bob Underwood) discussed program, promotional, financial and collaborative issues related to the event. The designated meeting facility at Holy Trinity Episcopal will accommodate 600 in attendance. An afternoon and/or evening performance, with or without a special reception with the instrumentalists and program design were discussed, along with methods for lining up sponsors. Co-chairs and committee chairs will be discussed and more specific arrangements for the event will be covered at the next meeting at 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday, June 4 at the Yacht Club. All members are invited to become part of the planning process.

Active Member Beth Gitlin’s office at the Women’s Business Center (WBC) of Florida Tech has indicated that there are about a dozen high school and middle school stu-dents registered for the Space Coast Entrepreneurial Summer Camp.

The joint program, offered by WBC and Junior Achievement of the Space Coast, will focus on leadership, business planning, goal setting, advertising, marketing, graphic planning and more as boys and girls ages 13 to 18 learn business concepts and man-agement skills. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., June 16 – 20 at WBC in the Florida Tech commons.

Registration deadline is Wednesday, May 7. Cost is $250 for the five-day pro-gram. Scholarships are available. There were a few openings available as late as Monday afternoon. To register a student Call 321-674-7007 or email [email protected].

Suzie DeBusk informed us that the June Merry Monday event will take place on June 2nd at City Tropics (one of our favorite locals) at 5th Avenue in downtown Indialan-tic. Food and drinks are on attendees; nothing is on the house. Time – 5:30 p.m. Object – fun and networking.

FIT PANTHERS OCTOBER 11TH TAILGATE PARTY POSTPONED

President Corinne Ishler announced that the opening Panther’s home game conflicts with our “WITCH” WAY 5K WALK/RUN fundraiser on Saturday, October 11. Another date will be announced for the tailgate party that originally was scheduled for that day.
