MISSION STATEMENT Building Strong Relationships in Christ,

And Making Him Known to All.

Winter arrived in force a day early this year. It seems

like Winter Storm Draco dumped more snow on

central Iowa than we got all last winter! Coming here

last year after several years of snowy northern

Michigan winters, Sarah and I were beginning to

wonder if Story City ever got real winter weather.

The storm left behind a barren yet starkly beautiful

sea of shifting snowdrifts.

The writer of Psalm 147 says:

The LORD sends his command to the earth;

his word runs swiftly.

He spreads the snow like wool

and scatters the frost like ashes.

He hurls down his hail like pebbles.

Who can withstand his icy blast?

He sends his word and melts them;

he stirs up his breezes, and the waters flow.

We can hardly imagine it while surrounded by drifts,

but our wintry landscape will melt into Spring with

flowing streams and blossoming flowers. God is

faithful to bring each season in its turn through the

power of his Word. In this New Year, may God’s

Word melt our icy hearts and transform the whole

world with new life.

Graduation Faith Stepping Stone Our high school seniors and

their families are in the middle of

their last year together before the

seniors head off to the new

adventures to which God is calling

them. This last year will go by quicker than they

realize; each day is precious.

In our Graduation Faith Stepping Stone, seniors

and their parents gather three times over the course of

the year for a meal and a chance to reflect on the

journey of their life together. They look back at the

blessings, the gifting and the calling God is giving

them in their future. Our second Senior Faith

Stepping Stone brunch will be held in the social hall

after church on Sunday, January 27. Seniors,

please call or email the church office to let us know if

you can come! Feel free to bring other seniors and

their families; just let us know how many to plan for!

If you’d like to honor our seniors by helping with the

meal or the Graduation Stepping Stone, please talk to

Pastor Kurt. You can find out more about the Faith

Stepping Stones at www.faithink.com.

a Healthy Baby

In January, all parents with

infants (and those expecting) are

invited to a special three-session

course on Raising a Healthy

Baby (Faith Stepping Stone #1).

We’ll meet at times that work best for the group. In

the course, we’ll talk about how to care for a baby’s

physical, emotional and spiritual health, as well as

the health of the parents in this stressful time of

transition. We’ll share, laugh and grow together.

We’ll finish with a group blessing of the babies

during worship on January 27th.

The Faith Stepping Stones are a series of classes

for parents and kids on the journey from birth to

graduation. They bring parents together to encourage

and equip them in their role as the primary faith

teachers of their kids. You can find out more about

Faith Stepping Stones at www.faithink.com.

Please call the church at 733.4972 or email Pastor

Kurt at [email protected] if you are

interested in the class.

The Ultimate Resolution

Resolutions are easy to make but oh so hard to

keep. In fact, many people refuse to make them

for that very reason. After all, by February, most

people have broken them, and by March they

don’t even remember what they were. It’s just too

hard to change, so why try?

Yet Scripture exhorts us to be more like Christ,

to forgive our enemies, to tithe and to be thankful

in all situations. Shouldn’t we resolve to put some

of these into practice, even if ever so imperfectly?

Peter admonishes us to be holy as God is holy

(1 Peter 15:16). That’s the ultimate New Year’s

resolution — all but certain to be broken

repeatedly before the sun sets on the first day. Yet

though we fail, are we not better for trying?

— The Newsletter Newsletter

Happy New Year to one and all.

The weather has turned colder and snowy. It’s a good time to rest and

relax with a good book series. Here are three new book series that

you will find enjoyable to wile away these cold, wintry days.

Riverhaven Years – B. J. Hoff

Rachel’s Secret – A wounded Irish American riverboat captain,

Jeremiah Gant, bursts through the fog into the rural Amish setting

of Riverhaven. He brings chaos and conflict to the whole Amish

community – especially for the young widow, Rachel Brenneman,

and her family.

Where Grace Abides – The Amish People find their quiet,

unassuming lives of faith jeopardized by a malicious outside

influence.

River of Mercy – How will the story end? Will Rachel’s brother

Gideon return to the Amish People? Will Rachel and Gant, the

“outsider”, find their desired haven? Who has been causing all the

harassment and tragedy upon the people of Riverhaven?

Lake Emily – Tracie Depree

Can of Peas – Weaves together the strong threads of family and

friends in a pattern of grace, forgiveness, and kindness. The story

invites you into a place, Emily Lake, Minnesota, where every day

brings a new story and neighbors are more than just people who live

down the road.

Dandelions in a Jelly Jar – This book tells a hopeful story of facing

the challenges of life with courage and learning to see with eyes of

grace.

Aprons on a Clothesline – This final book is a lovely reminder that

hope can be found even in the tragedies of life and joy waits in the

most unexpected places. You will enjoy your time in “Lake Emily.”

Lassoed in Texas – Mary Connealy

Petticoat Ranch – A love story filled with laughter, love and

petticoats.

Calico Canyon – A fast-paced romance story of Grace Calhoun, a

17 year old country “schoolmarm.” With some humorous twists

along with some fear-filled moments.

Gingham Mountain – This is a fast-paced, heartwarming story, set

in Texas in the 1870’s, filled with humor and romance, with a little

mystery woven in.

When you finish these, check some older series that have been

popular and well read.

“Sisters of Holmes County” series by Wanda Brunsetter Amish

“Sisters of the Quilt” series by Cindy Woodsmall Amish

Other good series authors are Beth Wiseman, Beverly Lewis, Jan

Karon, Lauraine Snelling, Catherine Palmer, Janette Oke, Bodie

A Note from Michelle:

Hello Everyone,

2012 has been such an amazing year.

And I am so excited to be getting 2013 off

to a running start. Our high school youth

are just returning from Impact conference

in Des Moines. We had 10 + students

attend for the weekend of worship, break-

out sessions, and large group time. If you

see our youth around, ask them what Jesus

has been teaching them!

Last month we also began monthly

movie discussion nights for our high

school youth. We spend time in

community together watching a film and

then discussion how it relates, fits into how

we see the world as followers of Jesus.

Junior high youth group has been high

energy, which we love. It will continue to

be high energy as we hit the ground

running. We are excited to embrace our

energetic side over the next few months by

having a pool party and going ice skating

together. Being a Christ-centered

community is such a blessing! So fun! Any

adults of high school youth interested in

helping out with any junior high events

feel free to e-mail me. We would love to

have you.

I am constantly amazed at the ways God

works in our lives. Teaching, shaping,

challenging, and growing. God has been

doing that in youth group this year, and in

my heart as well. I hope we can all

embrace the truth of these verses as we

begin this new year, “Therefore, if anyone

is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old

has gone, the new has come!” 2

Corinthians 5:17

Lastly, and on a more personal note. I

will be going on a trip to Haiti with three

other young adults for 2 weeks starting on

January 31st. We will be serving, working

along side an organization called Living

Media International. I would love to tell

you more about it, or feel free to visit our

blog at: www.bonbagay2013.blogspot.com

for more information.

Thank you.

Update from Pastor Randy Hansen who works with

International Students at ISU

International students coming together to learn how to follow

Jesus may not seem like earth shaking events. But, the potential

is there to start a chain of events that can be an important part of

God’s world-wide, history changing and eternally significant

movement. This past semester we have had students from

China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Russia and Africa embrace a

vision of becoming a part of fulfilling the Great Commission.

They are learning how to take the good news of great joy to

others and develop self-sustaining small groups of Jesus

followers that multiply into other multiplying groups of people

who faithfully follow Jesus. It may not seem like one small

discipleship group could have much of an impact on the world,

but once the multiplication starts one small group can be the

source of countless other people becoming followers of Jesus.

May the good news of great joy that we celebrate at

Christmas “fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him

(Romans 15:13 NIV)” throughout the coming new year.

In Jesus,

Randy Hansen, International Students Inc.

New “Sanctuary Sounds” CD

The new 115th Anniversary “Sanctuary Sounds” CD has

arrived. You can purchase it by contacting a choir member or the

church office. The cost is $15 for one CD or two for $25. If you

buy two or more, you will get a copy of the last Senior Choir CD

free.

There are 15 songs from a variety of groups and individuals

from our congregation. Thanks to Susan and Emily for

coordinating this project, to Susan Kinyon for taking the pictures

for the CD cover, and to all those who participated.

115th Anniversary

2013 is our 115th year as a congregation. We praise God that he has

continued to bind us together as his family in this place. We thank

Kenny Frette for the new song he has written specifically for our 115th

anniversary. It is the first song on the new Immanuel CD.
