CLEANING
Cleaners for the weekend of Jan. 26th are: Stoflet (x3), Ehley
* * Cleaning right after school on Friday or the last day of school for the week is the best time to
complete cleaning duties. If this truly does not work for your schedule, you can get a key for the
building. Please pick up a key from the office prior to the close of school on the last day of the week.
Please return the key to the office when you are finished cleaning. The cleaning supplies are in the
closet, kiddy-corner from the kitchen. There is a list of duties with numbers next to them and a list with
the names of the families who are to clean. When you have completed the list of jobs you chose, put
the number of that job done next to your name. This way, other teams will know which jobs are
already completed and we know who has done their cleaning responsibilities. You will be notified of
your week to clean through this Cleaning Rambler article, and there is a copy of the year’s cleaning
sign up sheets in the Fast Direct System under the LINKS tab. If you are unable to clean on your
weekend, it is your responsibility to exchange your weekend duties with another family or contact the
office to see if there are any open slots left if you want to be credited the $40.00 cleaning fee. Thank
you.

NEWS FROM KETTLE MORAINE LUTHERAN HIGH SCHOOL
Freshmen registration for next year is still taking place even though the two nights designated for it
have passed. If you are still interested in having your young adult attend KML next year, please
contact the KML office (262-677-4051). 131 young adults have registered as freshmen for the 2018-2019
school year at KML.
SCHOOL CLOSING – INCLEMENT WEATHER
This is the time of year when weather may cause school to close or trigger a late start. Fog, snow,
ice, or extreme cold are just a few of the conditions that can trigger changes to a school day. Please
note that anytime the West Bend School District cancels school or has a delayed start, Good
Shepherd follows suit. If the West Bend School District cancels school due to weather conditions, Good
Shepherd also cancels school. Many times the school district gets the message to the Milwaukee
television stations faster than we do. Please watch any of the Milwaukee stations for updates when
weather conditions may cause school cancellation or delay.
SCHOOL CLOSING – CONSTRUCTION
The construction project will soon be at a point where the new water line will need to be brought
into the building. This will take two consecutive days. This also means two days without water. We are
already scheduled to have no school on Monday, February 12. Due to construction Good Shepherd
will not have school on Tuesday, February 13. We are sending out this notice at this time to allow
families to make necessary plans for their children. Please note that Little Lambs has limited space
available.

KML FORENSICS ON MARCH 13 FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES FIVE THROUGH EIGHT
We are delighted to have the opportunity to take a team as well as other individuals this year! In
seventh and eighth grade language classes, each grade has performed three speeches already this
year. They may want to “polish” one of these. In order to field a team, we need a variety of speeches
so these grades only have the beginning of our team.
For our team we are allowed only two performances in any one category; I am hoping that so
many will want to participate that we will have even more than a team attending. Last year we took
a team and performed very well. If you have any experience in forensics and could help students,
please speak to Mrs. Wilk immediately. Because we have no Academic Showcase this year, we have
even more preparation to do.
The categories are: solo-acting, playacting, interpretive prose, interpretive poetry, visual aid
speech, persuasive speech, and four-minute speech. For playacting there really should be a parent
willing to coach it separately. They are great fun, but time outside of school needs to be set aside and
student extra-curricular activity can be challenging to schedule around. If you would like to
participate but are in need of materials, speak to Mrs. Wilk. She has a plethora of books for many
categories.
The fifth and sixth grade students must be at KML before the 5:30 round begins; seventh and
eighth grade students should arrive well before 6:30 P.M. to find their room.
We as a school need to provide judges for the evening. Judges arrive early to have a light meal
while reviewing the critique sheets with the forensics committee so that the night runs smoothly.
PIONEER UPDATE
The Pioneer Boys and Sunbeams enjoyed learning all about first aid and did an activity related to
first aid. Thank you to Mrs. Pieper for teaching the Trailblazer Girls how to make corsages. We were
excited to make them as a thank you to our Teachers.
Dog Sledding permission slips and payment were due yesterday – Jan 22nd. Please contact Bob
Hamacher at [email protected] ASAP if your child is interested in going.
SPORTS NEWS (by Rau)
Thank you this week to Bob Rau, Andy Ehlke, Todd Hagenow, Lorie Rechlicz, Beth Hagedorn,
Gregg Schwister, Ann-Marie Glizinski, Bob Hamacher, Andy Hanson and Jeremy Przybyla. These fine
people are our B level (5-6) coaches. As they conclude their season this week and early next week,
please thank them for their selfless service to our children for the past 3 months. We appreciate you!
God’s blessings to Kylie Przybyla and Miriam Kremer as they compete this evening at the Hot Shot
contest at KML. Tonight is $1 hot dogs and root beer floats as well as free admission for grade
schoolers. Sounds like a good family time!
As you can see on the signup sheet on the back of the Rambler, there are holes in service this
weekend. It is the last chance to sign up and avoid the fee that has already appeared on your
account. Remember that all cheerleaders and basketball parents need to fulfill service hours or pay
$10 an hour so I can hire someone else. Thank you for your service.

3K AND 4K NEWS
This week the four year olds are learning about the children of Israel entering the promised land.
The three year olds are learning about when Jesus is born.
Thank you for bringing your child to sing on Sunday. I received many complements in regards to
the beautiful song that they sang.
This week we are studying the letter “H”. Last week we found the letter “U” under a table in the IMC.
Friday, January 26th we will be making gingerbread houses with the third graders. We are still in
need of graham crackers, powder sugar and extra candy for decorations. A list of what is needed is
on the white board in the classroom.
5
Please start saving cereal boxes for our Valentine Day boxes. If you have extra ones please feel
free to send them along with your child.
Our Valentine’s Day parties are Wednesday and Thursday, February 14th and 15th. A note will be
coming home in regards to our party.
No school on Friday, February 9th and Monday, February 12th .
Thank you for visiting kindergarten on Saturday. We had a very nice open house. Please
remember to complete the blue registration form and return it to school as soon as possible if you plan
to have your child attend Good Shepherd in the fall. We need an accurate number to plan for staffing
next year’s class. If you need an informational packet please talk to Miss Henckel, Mrs. Paustian or the
school office. Thank you.
KINDERGARTEN NEWS
Hello! We sing on Saturday at the 5 pm service. Please meet in the classroom before the service
to warm up at 4:45. Please let me know if your child can not attend. Let’s all make an effort to attend
with our families!
We are enjoying the Bible lessons with Joshua has the leader of God’s people. We have started
counting on 10 frames and really like it! Keep up on the daily book reading and sight word practice.
It is so important!
Just a reminder sign and return K report card envelopes. Have a great week! See you at church.
MRS. DREWA’S DETAILS
This week’s highlights are as follows:
* Thank you to all for coming and singing on Sunday. The next time we sing will be for Lenten
Wednesday services on Feb. 21.
*Christ Light: “The Fall of Jericho” and “Achan’s Sin”
*Math: We are comparing numbers. Please practice counting from least to greatest and
greatest to least with different numbers between 0-20.
*Reading: We will be finishing our work with “r – blends”: words with br, tr, dr, cr, fr, gr.
* Science: In our space unit, we have learned about how the earth rotates to make a day. We
also learned that the earth revolves around the sun to make a year.
Upcoming dates to remember:
We are doing our MAPS testing this week. Please make sure that your child gets plenty of rest and
eats healthy.
We look forward to hearing some stories from Jordan’s family this Friday, Jan. 26. If you haven’t
taken your 1st or 2nd turn, please consider signing up for an opportunity to read. Here are the other
dates that are still open: Feb. 16; Mar. 7, 16, 23; Apr. 6, 20; May 11, 16, and 23. Moms, dads,
grandparents, etc. are encouraged to come and be a guest reader.
“Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31
(NIV2011)
MRS. BIESTERFELD’S BULLETIN
Wow! We sure showed our school spirit last week with all of our cool costumes! It was a fun week.
We did not start our MAPs testing today because of all the illness that is going throughout our room.
My plan is to try testing on Thursday, unless too many children are still out due to sickness. We also plan
on testing Tuesday, January 30. Plenty of rest and eating breakfast will help your child do his/her best.
We sing at Good Shepherd this Sunday, January 28 for the 10:30 service. Please drop your child off
at our room by 10:20. We are looking forward to singing with the fourth graders again! Please let me
know if your child is unable to attend.
Here’s what we are learning this week:
•Through our Christ Light lessons we learn that God blesses those who have faith in him. We
want to show our faith by obeying God, even when we don’t understand his plans.
•In math we are learning about measurement.
6
•This week’s phonics skill is adding the suffixes -ed and -ing. Please review the spelling rules that
are listed on the back of the homework note.
•In literacy we are studying what readers can learn from fairytales. We are noticing the
differences in the points of view of characters.
•In grammar we are writing abbreviations.
•In social studies we are practicing map skills.
Enjoy God’s blessings this week!
GREETINGS FROM GRADE THREE
Thank you for bringing your Third Grader to sing in church yesterday. I was very pleased with their
anthem. I always receive compliments from the people about how much they enjoy it when the
classes sing.
There is a lot of sickness going around. I encourage my parents to make sure your Third Grader
gets plenty of rest, eats right, and washes their hands. If your child is feeling ill, please keep them at
home.
Map Testing starts up again the week of January 29. I am encouraging my children to get
plenty of rest and to eat nutritious food so they are alert and ready to do their best on these tests. If
your child is absent the tests will be made up the following week.
Our timed tests in multiplication began today. The students have 3 minutes to complete 36 problems
on a certain level. When they pass this level they continue on. Everyone moves ahead at their own
rate.
The greeters for Wednesday, Jan. 10 are Jake Bartelt and Mattie Schneider.
Have a great week in the Lord.
MRS. MEHLBERG’S MEMO
The MAPS tests for our grade will be Monday (math test) and Wednesday (Reading test) next week,
Jan. 29 & 31. The best way your child can prepare is to get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy
breakfast.
Our next scheduled singing is this weekend. We sing at 10:30 AM on Sun. Jan. 28 at Good
Shepherd. Please send a note if your child will be absent.
Spirit Week was fun and the students showed creativity in planning their outfits for the various days.
The Pep Rally was a great culminating event where we got to show our school spirit and cheer on the
Rams teams.
Half of the class has made their bookmark for the January reading project. Please remind your
child they only have about a week to complete the bookmark and the reading log.
The book orders were sent out last week. Please send any orders online or to school by Friday, Feb.
2.
Each student has a state to research for the state poster over the next couple weeks. We are
limiting it to a state east of the Mississippi River since those are the states we are currently studying in
class. Later we can research the western states.
To encourage students to remember to hand in completed work by 8 AM we have a new policy in
grade 4. If they fail to hand in their paper and I have to ask for it I will lower their grade by 5%. I will
write -5% in the upper right corner so you know if your child is having trouble handing in his work. If
your child has a pink late slip stapled to the assignment page, please sign the form and see that your
child completes the late work.
Blessings to you in this second half of the year!
RAU RAMBLES
Greetings this week!
We sing at Shepherd of the Hills this Sunday at 8 am. Please have your child there at 7:40 to warm
up in one of their back rooms. Thank you!
In Christ Light we are studying how God disciplines those who do not give him the glory due him.
The hymn for Wednesday is 606 st 1, 4, 5
7
Please return your report card envelopes.
There is a science quiz on Monday and test next Tuesday.
We are MAPS testing next week Tuesday and Thursday. Let’s get healthy and have a good rest so
we can have an accurate measurement.
Blessings on your week.
Science 6 and Spanish 8
We are having many periodic table quizzes this week. The purpose to not to memorize the whole
table but to become familiar with the terms and letters used on it. Lesson 2 will be quizzed on Friday.
In Spanish we are starting diminutives.
BRAUN’S BABBLINGS
Singing in Church: Our next opportunity to praise God with our voices is fast approaching. We sing at
Shepherd of the Hills on Sunday, January 28th, during the 8am service.
Topics of study:
Science: Invertebrates
History: The Constitution- the Preamble, basic principles, and legislative branch
Literature: The Giver and Utopia projects
WORDS FROM MRS. WILK
Spirit week was so much fun! I think I enjoy dressing up as much as the students. I give a
“shout out” to the eighth grade for winning the spirit award.
I was SO excited that no eighth graders had detentions last quarter. But… the first day of the
new quarter we had many late assignments. Please encourage your child to use his assignment book.
This week brings the end of our four-minute speeches. I’ve encouraged a number of students
to use this speech or another from this school year for the Forensics Festival at KML on Tuesday, March
13. Please see the other article I placed in the Rambler this week for details.
The students randomly chose busking projects for music. We are studying all the elements before
they embark with several other students in the class.
33 presidents are to be recited before the close of school day Thursday. Reviewing the
European map is also critical to study for the test on Thursday and Friday. I have written questions from
many of the speeches pertaining to WWII for the chapter test in addition to a section from our history
book.
I believe that we will bring along a veteran on our EAA field trip on Thursday, February 1. I do
not have enough drivers/chaperones that have sent in their forms and payment yet, but I am hopeful.
Please send it in by tomorrow, January 24.
We finish Elephant Run this week, and Thursday our projects are due. I am eager to see the
brochures, posters, writing, scrapbooks, etc. that the students have prepared.
It is challenging to find a chunk of time to do MAPS testing during our busy and diversely-
scheduled week, but I am hoping to test this Thursday and Friday afternoon. We were doing really
well attendance-wise until this week. We will finish up testing later next week.
Seventh Grade
This week phase four begins; students were shown how to organize cards, put grouping names on
each pile, how to subdivide topics with A’s, B’s, and C’s, etc. Of all the planning phases, this is most
critical; students may find “holes” in their papers, which they can fill with more notes. They will be
telling me why they plan to cover topics in the order they have arranged their cards. I am teaching a
directional thesis statement this year. Please remember that I enter grades and put excused for the
students that have grades coming later.
After phase five’s outline is done, we will begin our visual aid speeches. I’ve been asking the
students about their plan to accent their speech with visuals that add understanding. None said they
need poster board. Hopefully our students will take one of the three speeches already performed this
year to the next level- KML on March 13. Please see the article about this fun activity earlier in the
Rambler.
8
The students randomly chose busking projects for music. We are studying all the elements before
they embark with several other students in the class.
Sixth Grade
I am hoping that this class, known for its talking, will step up and participate in the KML forensic
festival on March 13. Please see my article about this fun event earlier in the Rambler.
This week’s lessons in Christ Light show how God rewards obedience and faith ; he warns
against disobedience. We see the walls of Jericho come down.
Fifth Grade
I love putting theory to use! The students are really improving with their technique and ability to
read notes. Yes, we still have fingers not covering holes properly which cause squeaks, but it is
sounding much more music-like.
Thank you for joining me in reaching out with God’s word so that we can educate,
encourage, and equip our children for life on earth and for bliss in heaven.
A WORD FROM THE PRINCIPAL
I wonder how many people made a resolution to get in shape, physical shape, this year. My guess
is that quite a few people made that vow to themselves. I base that on the number of people showing
up at the Y where I regularly go. The intention is good. People want to be healthy. People want to be
strong. How about you?
How strong is your faith? It is easy to stay strong in our faith when things are going well. What about
when tragedy strikes? How well do we handle it when we face challenges or opposition? Do we still
rely on the Lord or do we find our once strong faith starting to weaken? Do we get to the point where
we doubt and find our faith faltering?
The good news is that we don’t have to hold onto the Lord. He holds onto us. His strength never
fails. His grip never weakens. Check out 1 Corinthians 1:8, “He will keep you strong to the end, so that
you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Lord, keep hanging onto us especially when we are weak.
