Introduction

When I was first diagnosed with hypothyroidism back in 2006, I never thought I would ever feel like myself again – the outgoing, optimistic person who was always there for

everyone, ready to offer advice or a kind word when needed. What was left of the ambitious, optimistic woman and mother, when I could no longer regain my composure after a bad moment at work, or even show the faintest smile to my loving husband and

children?

Hypothyroidism can make a middle-aged woman feel 30 years older and struggle with weight gain and mood swings – I’ve been there. However, this condition can be reversed and made easy to live with – I’ve been there too, and I have stayed that way for the past

six years. Health is far more valuable than any kind of fortune, be it our hard-earned money or a literal mountain of gold.

Chapter 1: Thyroid Anatomy: How Does the Endocrine System Work?

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the lower part of your neck, around the Adam’s apple and right below the larynx, also known as your

voice box. Part of the endocrine system, the thyroid gland is responsible for a variety of metabolic, biochemical and neurological processes powering up the intricate organic mechanisms in the human body. The average thyroid weighs

about 1 ounce and enlarges during menstruation and pregnancy – bear in mind that a woman’s thyroid is slightly heavier than the average male thyroid.

Chapter 2: Thyroid Hormones

Iodine and L-tyrosine (an amino acid) are needed in the making of T3 and T4. Probably the most important function of thyroid hormones is metabolism regulation, which relates to the apparently inexplicable weight gain that comes with hypothyroidism. In case of an underactive thyroid, deficient

hormone production also slows down metabolism (the entirety of biochemical reactions that support an organism, particularly the process of

converting food into energy – lipid and carbohydrate metabolism).Metabolism also influences the rate at which your body burns calories, which is essential

in weight loss, and also one of the reasons why some of us burn more or fewer calories than others while doing the same exercises.

Chapter 3: What is Hypothyroidism?

The term “hypothyroidism” is pretty self-explanatory and makes us think of an underactive thyroid – so far, so good. But how does an underactive thyroid

affect your physiology, metabolism and overall well-being? Back in the old days before the diagnosis, I remember getting home in an unbearable state of

exhaustion, with no energy left to take a shower or read a bedtime story to my daughters. I would often fall asleep in my work outfit with my makeup on,

only to wake up on the following day with the illusion of being fully recovered.

Chapter 4: Other Conditions Related to Hypothyroidism

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

Hyper and hypothyroidism are hormonal imbalances. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, however, is an autoimmune disease that usually encompasses features and symptoms specific to both hyper and hypothyroidism. Hashimoto is NOT a

hormonal disorder. Note the difference between their names as well: hypothyroidISM, thyroidITIS. In case of Hashimoto, your immune system doesn’t recognize your thyroid tissue as part of your body and therefore attacks it in the delusional attempt to keep the rest of your body healthy. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis

is a disease (sickness), whereas hypothyroidism is a condition (a physical or mental state of being).

Chapter 5: Risks and Complications of Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto

Like any other condition, both hypothyroidism and Hashimoto can have serious consequences if left untreated. Doing regular blood tests and

following your prescription should prevent these complications, although knowing the risk factors and being informed will help you make better

decisions in a difficult scenario. To put it bluntly, all individuals with hypothyroidism are at risk for mental and physical complications.

Chapter 6: Beating Hypothyroidism

There are a few ways to treat hypothyroidism, some more effective than the others – which is, in the end, a matter of personal opinion. I will talk about all

available treatment options and let you decide which one is best for you (although I would be most flattered if my story convinced you to try the natural

way!).

Generally, if you don’t seem to find anything that will make you feel better, you can feel free to try different treatments as long as your doctors approve them. However, despite the fact that the most effective treatments consist of natural

hormones (natural desiccated porcine thyroid), you’ll still feel like there’s something missing, like there’s more you can do to make you feel even better.

Chapter 7: Treatment Plan: Diet and Natural Supplements

Nutrition is 75% responsible for the way we look and feel – pollution and lifestyle account for the remaining 25%. In fact, there’s a high chance your thyroid problems were caused by certain nutritional imbalances and poor

lifestyle choices, such as a diet that’s low in iodine and high in sugar (carbohydrates) or fats. Stress also takes cortisol levels through the roof,

damaging your endocrine system in the long run.

Chapter 8: Hypothyroidism and Weight Loss

The “secret” to successful weight loss is to avoid food that is bad for your thyroid – which honestly took me a while to realize. Counting calories is also important once you’ve clearly

established the list of good foods to choose from (which I will provide for you), although you have to accept it’s still going to be a bit more difficult to lose weight.

Avoid sugar and refined foods

Cortisol and insulin are the two hormones in charge with the assimilation of these types of

food. If you consume them regularly, you can develop type II diabetes without even realizing. You might say you don’t eat many sweets, but how often do you consume sugary beverages

such as juices or sodas? The daily sugar allowance is somewhere around 30-40g, and a serving of regular juice usually contains 20 grams of sugar.

Chapter 9: Staying Healthy and Keeping Hypothyroidism Away

Don’t forget to exercise regularly

Regular exercising helps you boost your metabolism (which is already slowed down by a lazy thyroid) and burns extra calories on top of it. It also keeps you in a good mood and helps reduce “brain fog”. Don’t you get the impression your thoughts are getting clear while jogging or sweating in front of a workout DVD? Exercising is part of a healthy life... so here’s another valuable saying: mens sana in

corpore sano! (A healthy mind in a healthy body!)

A good night’s sleep...

You always work better if your mind is clear and rested. You will easily get rid of brain fog and fatigue if you sleep properly AND if you stick to a strict schedule – for example, going to bed at the same hour. Don’t go to bed later than 10 PM. Your body loves routine and you can’t fight

against your biological clock, even if society sometimes dictates otherwise.
