Laurie Aldredgeʼs family member.Kendra Yanchakʼs 14-month old little girl who is in ICU/

President Elect Eric Heitkamp called the meeting to order. Mary Bishop gave the invocation and asked that we keep in our prayers Laurie Aldredge who had to leave suddenly due to family concerns and Kendra Yanchak and her 14-month old daughter who is in ICU. Cindy Cummings led the Pledge of Allegiance and “The Star Spangled Banner.” Charlotte Hudgin, assisted by Will Rep-peto with the mike, introduced our visiting Rotarians and guests, including PDG Frank Meyer. Teri Thomas announced The Hub and web advertisers of the week. PP Greg Pape reported that the club had set a goal of contributing $30,000 to the Rotary Foundation this year, and that we are well on the way. He reminded us that RI launched PolioPlus in 1986, and in 1987 RI held the first Peace Fo-rum which led to the Rotary Peace Fellowships

He introduced Charlie Bond who announced his annual Paul Harris Fellow donation, which he makes in honor of his father-in-law,

Jere Elliott, who founded Elliottʼs Hardware. This year he made Tom Rhodes an honorary Paul Harris Fellow. PE Eric awarded a grant from the RCPC Foundation to Sharon McGow-an of Friends of Wednesdayʼs Child, who provides support for children in foster care. The grant will fund their Birthday Project. The chil-dren move from home to home, but they will receive a card and a small gift on their birth-days no matter where they are. VP Karen Farris presented a Membership Moment; she suggested that we invite people who are new

Oliver “Buck” Revell, retired deputy director of the FBI. He said he doesnʼt prepare his speeches until the day they are to be given because events are always changing. He explained that he was going to talk about five issues that are critical for the U.S. The first is the exchange of thermonuclear wea-pons among rogue countries. Vladimir Putin seems to want to put the Soviet Union back together, and his actions have put NATO on alert. The second are cyber attacks on our infrastructure. There is a tremendous amount of criminal activity and intelligence activity through the use of the internet. We face threats to our monetary and credit systems every day. Cyber attacks can also shut down manufacturing, transportation, and utilities. Classified facilities no longer have connec-tions to the internet because no computer is safe. North Korea has been counterfeiting one hundred dollar bills. If the market can be flooded with counterfeit bills, the monetary system is disrupted. An Electro Magnetic Pulse is created by a nuclear explosion, but it will take out all the electrical equipment and the electric grid. The only facilities that are protected are the governments top secret sites, but most everyday electrical devices are vulnerable. His last point was that even thought the First Amendment guarantees free speech, there is a movement to create an Islamist state within the U.S. which follows sharia law rather than the laws of the U.S., even here in Dallas.

THOUGHTS ON . . .

For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.

~ Nelson Mandela You can't separate peace from free-dom because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom.

~ Malcolm XWe stand for freedom. That is our conviction for ourselves; that is our only commitment to others.

~ John F. KennedyFreedom is a possession of inestim-able value. ~ CiceroI believe that freedom is the deepest need of every human soul.

Through a global grant, Rotary members in India are fighting disease and raising breast cancer awareness with a mobile lab that brings mammography services right to womenʼs doorsteps. Many women lack the resources to travel to the city. The project is an example of how you can work sustainability and training into a global grant involving a vehicle.
