President Karen Farris called the meet-ing to order. Mary Bishop gave the invoca-tion, noting that Jeff Sheehanʼs father had passed away. Please keep him and his family in your prayers. E.G. McMillan led the Pledge of Allegiance and “The Star Spangled Banner.” Jodie Ray, assisted by Daniel Drabinski with the mike, introduced our visi-tors and guests, including a long-distance visitor from Australia. President Karen intro-duced our very special guest today, Brandt Bullard, a paramedic with Highland Park. Shawn Foster announced the Marketplace advertiser of the week.

PP Greg Pape reported that since the RI Foundation was begun in 1917, over three billion dollars have been donated to improve the lives of people around the world. The cen-tennial year for the RI Foundation will begin at the RI Convention in Seoul and will end at the

donates a meal to The Family Place every month as a part of that effort. This Maggianoʼs has been recognized as the top restaurant in the company. John Gilchrist announced that the meeting on February 26 would be a One Plus One meeting; bring a guest to hear a movie critic speak about the Oscars. For evry guest the member will receive one entry into a drawing for a pass to Studio Movie Grill. Stan Wright thanked everyone who signed up so quickly to volunteer on the Food Pantry. He will need volunteers for the Pantryʼs visit to West Dallas on the third Tuesday of the month.

RI Convention in Atlanta. PP Greg then recognized PP Rick Amsberry for his most recent contri-bution as a Paul Harris Fellow. President Karen introduced Ty Varner, the

manager of Maggianoʼs, as the new-est honor-ary mem-ber. He said that the restau-

rant wants to be a part of the community and

Janie Loveless introduced our speaker today, Jan Edgar Langbein, CEO of Genesis Wo-menʼs Shelter. She said that she learned about domestic violence

by chance without realizing that it would become her lifeʼs work. She said once you know domestic violence affects one-fourth of all women, how could you not be involved? Every

nine seconds a woman is assaulted. Ninety-five percent of battered people are women. The percentage of young women who are abu-sed is higher than that of older women; we must tell young women that abuse is never acceptable. Many women are never asked if they feel safe in their own home. Leaving the home will not change the abuser; he will either be angry at the woman or he will begin abusing someone else. Some women have no options; they have no money and no place to go where the abuser will not track them down. Domes-tic violence is about power and control. Trau-ma causes brain disregulation; women who are battered do not make good witnesses. Seventy percent of men who batter women will also batter their children. She believes that it will take a societal shift to eliminate domestic violence, but society has come a long way .

THOUGHTS ON . . .

When I was a boy I was told that anybody could become President. Now I'm beginning to believe it.

~ Clarence DarrowIn America any boy may become President and I suppose it's just one of the risks he takes.

~ Adlai E. Stevenson Jr.Mothers may still want their sons to grow up to be President, but accor-ding to a famous Gallup poll of some years ago, some 73 percent do not want them to become politi-cians in the process.

~ John F. KennedyNo man who ever held the office of president would congratulate a friend on obtaining it.

~ John Adams

Some Presidents and Candidates On Why the Chicken Crossed the Road

Sarah Palin: The chicken crossed the road because, gosh-darn it, he's a maverick!Barack Obama: Let me be perfectly clear, if the chickens like their eggs they can keep their eggs. No chicken will be required to cross the road to surrender her eggs. Period.John McCain: My friends, the chicken crossed the road because he recognized the need to

engage in cooperation and dialogue with all the chickens on the other side of the road.Hillary Clinton: What difference, at this point, does it make why the chicken crossed the road?Dick Cheney: Where's my gun?

Happy Birthday

On Feb. 5th, New Member Orienta-tion Chair, PP Ley Waggoner conduc-ted a meeting to familiarize our Club's newest members with Rotary Organiza-tion, plans, programs, and Foundation activities encouraging early participation. He was assisted by committee members PP Linda Tunnell, PP Phillip Bank-head and PP Fred Speno.  New mem-bers are Herb Ziev, Grace Daniels and Nate Weymouth.
