pacted so many lives and had over 800 peo-ple at his memorial service. President Fred stated even though Howard had been a mem-ber for just 4 years, he had been so active that he was awarded the Wilbur Hawkins Spirit of Rotary award in 2011. Gerry Montgom-ery led us in the Pledge and Star Spangled Banner. We then attempted to sing “On the Road to Mandalay”, which apparently was a Frank Sinatra song (he probably rolled over in his grave). Ley Waggoner introduced our visitors and guests. Chris Short, before in-troducing our Hub and Web advertisers, men-tioned how he had met our speaker years be-fore when he sold her a car. He thought she was flirting with him, but she was really just being a shrewd negotiator!

Patsy Watson and PE Cleve Clinton gave an update on the RCPC Foundation, and mentioned that the number of contributors had grown from 20 last month to 48 currently, in-cluding 4 who had just turned in their checks.

Ira Denton introduced our speaker, Rena Pederson, who came to talk to us about “The Bravest Wo-man in the World”. She is currently the Director of Communications for

the National Math and Science Initiative. She wanted to discuss with us a book she is com-pleting, entitled “The Burma Chronicles”. Her book is about a remarkable woman, Aung San Suu Kyi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 for trying to bring democracy to Burma. She won the prize while under house arrest for her activities trying to bring attention to the repressive military regime in Burma. Her fa-ther also tried to bring independence to Burma after WWII, but was assassinated right after he had set up his new government. She grew up and went to Oxford where she met her hus-band and started a family. She then had to return to Burma in the late 1980’s to help them crusade for independence. She spent the next 15 of 20 years in prison. In the 2007 Saf-fron Revolution, thousands of monks protes-ted and hundreds were killed. After a cyclone devastated the country, the repressive re-gime refused to allow any aid to be sent from other countries. Dignitaries, including Laura Bush, spoke out for Burma. Aung San Suu Kyi was on the cover of numerous publica-tions around the world, discussing the repres-sion her country was undergoing and her fight for peace. She was finally released from pri-son in 2010 and is allowed to go out and give speeches. She was elected to the Burmese Parliament, and last week came to Congress to receive the Congressional Gold Medal.

THOUGHTS ON . . .

We all learn by experience but some of us have to go to summer school.

~ Peter De VriesPoverty is the schoolmaster of character. ~ AntiphanesA sense of curiosity is nature's original school of education.

~ Dr. Smiley BlantonThe simplest schoolboy is now familiar with truths for which Archimedes would have sacrificed his life. ~ Ernest RenanThe school of hard knocks is an accelerated curriculum.

~ MenanderOne thing about the school of experience is that it will repeat the lesson if you flunk the first time.

Happy Birthday

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL

HE PROFITS MOST WHO LAUGHS BEST One day a housework-challenged husband decided to wash his sweatshirt. Seconds af-ter he stepped into the laundry room, he shouted, "What setting do I use on the wash-ing machine?" "It depends," his wife replied. "What does it say on your shirt?" He yelled back, "Ohio State.”

An English professor wrote the words "a woman without her man is nothing" on the

chalkboard and asked his students to punctu-ate it correctly.

The males in the class wrote: "A woman, without her man, is nothing."

The females in the class wrote: "A woman: without her, man is nothing."

Rotary International has made a new funding commit-ment of $75 million over three years to the Global Polio Eradi-cation Initiative (GPEI).

Rotary, which has already contributed nearly $1.2 billion to the GPEI, announced the commitment at a Sept. 27 high-level side event on polio eradi-cation, convened by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during the United

Nations General Assembly in New York.

The side event, “Our Commitment to the Next Gen-eration: The Legacy of a Po-lio-free World,” brought to-gether leaders of the remain-ing endemic countries, repre-sentatives of donor govern-ments, development agen-cies, the GPEI partners, and the media to underscore the urgent need to finish the job.
