Owen Paterson, the Environment Secretary, this week launched a Britishmove to try to persuade the European Union to relax restrictions on thecultivation of GM crops and allay public fears over so-calledFrankenfoods.

Advocates of GM crops say they increase yields and produce more food.Critics say the technology remains unproven and could threaten humanhealth and the ecosystem.

In a controversial intervention this week, Mr Paterson suggested peoplethwarting GM cultivation are putting lives at risk.

Despite his argument which is backed by David Cameron the Houseof Commons is upholding a policy of rejecting GM ingredients served inthe Palace of Westminster.

However, the Commons insisted that banning GM, which was put in placein 1998, was not about health fears, but simply reflected customer choice.

The House of Commons Catering Service avoids, wherever identifiable, the procurement of foods that contain genetically modified organisms,

the service said.To this end, as part of the tendering process, food suppliers arerequired to work to a strict GM organisms policy and give assurancesthat goods supplied be free from genetically modified materials. Itadded: The decision to avoid GMs is seen as largely a matter of customer choice.

The Commons resistance to GM foods has come to light a day after Downing Street refused to say if the Prime Minister and his family wouldhappily consumer food including GM ingredients.

Mr Paterson today acknowledged that his argument for more use of GMtechnology faces stiff resistance because of deep public scepticism.

He wants EU regulators to approve a long list of new GM crops, includingherbicide-tolerant maize and sugar beet.

Current rules mean that only when other European nations accept thecase for GM will it be possible for Britain to use the crops more widely, hetold the ConservativeHome website.

He said: I have to work closely the whole time with various allies, but it isa typical issue where there are terribly strong feelings in some member states. The last poll I saw in Germany 98 per cent of people are opposedto GM, so you have to really respect that.

Mr Patersons outspoken argument for GM technology has angeredsome campaigners and worried politicians who agree with him but fear his combative approach will be counterproductive.

Lady Parminter, the Lib Dem spokeswoman for food, the environmentand rural affairs in the House of Lords, said Mr Paterson runs the risk of

Monsanto genetically modified plants are killing off bees by the millio ns. Bees areess ential to the earths ecosystem. Monsanto want to destroy the naturalecosystem so they can mon opolise the gm food ind ustry. Monsanto don't care if they destroy the plane t as long as they can make a profit doing so.

GM Crops do not simp ly require the approval of the consum er, but also the farmer who buys the sterile seed or feeds GM products to his animals .

As a former farm er, I would never put my bus ines s at ris k from a single s ourcesuppl ier of sterile GM seeds . There are many extremely competent seedproducers, particularly in Scotland where crop yields using s uch non GM seedshave grown by 80%. So why the nee d for GM?I would prefer to select the agro chemicals , herbicides and pes ticides, specificallyrelevant to my local region and not to rely on the chemical bo und in with GM Seeds. The so called safe and tested agro chemicals and defoliants produced historicallyby Mons anto have been p roven to be anything but safe........... So, why should the ir current chemicals that are integrated into their GM seeds be any different.(Monsanto produced the de foliant. Agent Orange, that resulted in m any claimsagains t the compan y.Monsanto also m anufactured an Agro chemical called 2,4,5T, a constituent of

Agent orange. A inadequate control s ystem in the m anufacture of 2,4,5, Tproduced Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin. A chemi cal plant in Italy run by Monsan tohad an explosion that contaminated several towns, combined po pulation 37,000and resulted in the slaughter of 80,000 animals. The chemical concerned known by it shortened name Dioxin, is rated as the 3rdmost dangerous substance in the world. Our English politicians wan t us farmers (and Britain;s public) to put our businesses (and lives) in the hands of Monsanto. Not today thank you.

MEPs have no input to this charade, all they have is an "up - down" vote on its implem entation. One precedentof existing FTAs is that if a country introduces laws to protect workers, thepublic or the environment it must compens ate corporations for anyconseque ntial lost profits, thus res ulting in a loss of sovereignty.

I worked for 14 years for a com pany dealing wit GM research and during all thattime they found absolu te nothing to indicate a single iota of harm.

In fact, GM foods were often better, having protection ag ainst the many thingswhich previously could spoil them or reduce their quality.

Not only are GM crops the future, its the only hope for the future becaus e the worldis s imply incapable of producing the amount of food it requires. However, as withWind Turbines, the foot stamp ing m inority got their way and electricity is no w paidfor not by standing order or direct debit but through the nos e. Every time a field fullof corn fails for reas ons which are en tirely preventable, you pay the cost.

GM foods for too long have had a m an with a red flag plod ding along in front. Itstime he wen t back to the Liberal pa rty and we s tarted to make the prog ress weshould be making.

If GM foods could be produced on mas s we would see a considerable drop in our food prices. That is until the government screwed it all up and prices on ce againsoared.

Let those who know b est buy organic food. Let those with intelligence share in thesuccess of research which has bee n truly startling, absolutely safe and provides abetter product.

I think the greatest recomm endation for GM crops is that the government havebanned them in Parliame nts restaurants. We all know they never get anythingright.
