FROM THE PRESIDENT ............... , ................ •···•··. :Fellow Members, It seems sadness is the trend again this year as we share with Lois the untimely passing of Norman Hall. Although he was not a member of the N.C.I.W.C., he was a friend of all wolfhounders every where. We all loved to see Norm at a show because we knew what fun was to come when he started telling his stories. Norm Hall ~as many times President of I.W.A W.C. and spent many years working toward the betterment of that club. We shall all miss you, Norman.
A note on the St. Patrick's Day parade in S.F. There were only 11 hounds represented but they were a mighty group, all in their green jackets . They loved the parade in spite of the sudden downpour just before we got under way. However, the rain didn't last too long and most of us dried in the windy march up Market St. to the spritely tunes of the marching bands ahead and behind us. Soon, our July match will be upon us and we are hoping it will be the last of our Plan B matches. If this is so, we will have our first Plan A in January and second one in July, 1980. If we do our jobs well and are approved, we'll be on our way. We hope. I have been informed by Marty Mulac that our Lure Machine is making its changeover to a continuous loop and that it will be the most in coursing machines . That's good news.--Hope to see you all out at the courses or the shows having fun with your hounds.
Goq Bless, Mary Major

~ for Rabies
An 11th century English manuscript provides a prescription which was followed in country districts until the 19th century. It advises in case of a bite from a dog suspected to be rabid to "take the worm which is found under the animal's tongue, cut it into sections and bury it in a fig.''
Around 1400 a learned treatise on the care of the hunting hound, Mayster of the Game, directs for some illnesses, notably rabies, that the dogs should be ''sent for a bathe in the sea . ''

DISTEMPER MAY BE PASSED TO UNBORN PUPPIES COLUMBUS, Ohio-Canine distemper virus appar
ently can cross the placenta and affect the unborn puppies of a bitch that has contracted the disease.
That is the preliminary conclusion of Steven Krakowka, D.V.M., Ph.D., Edward Hoover, D.V.M., Ph.D., and Adalbert Koestner, D.V.M., Ph.D., three Ohio State University scientists who recently completed a study sponsored by The Seeing Eye, Inc, through Morris Animal Foundation.
The investigators found distemper in the pregnant bitch can have one of at least two consequences: it can either cause her to abort or to give birth to infected puppies. If abortion occurs, it can take place in the early, feverish stage of maternal infection or somewhat later when the virus reaches the placenta joining mother and fetus. The puppies are then aborted before they are actually contaminated by the virus. ·
On the other hand, if the bitch does come to term, evidence of viral infection can be found in tissues of the pups.
The scientists said no final conclusions can yet be drawn, because the study involved only two bitches and their- litters. (The Bitehes olllUSt. be raised in a special germ-free environment, an expensive and timeconsuming undertaking.) Future work will be aimed at confirming the results.
These preliminary findings, however, could explain why distemper vaccine does not give protection to some dogs. If a puppy were congenitally infected, the vaccine would not be effective.

OBEDIENCE STATISTICS, THE BOTTOM LINE by Betty Moore
I have had the obligation, over the past six months, of going through all AKC Gazettes from January to December in order to find the names of I.W.s that have scored in Trials. I have found it an interesting bit of work, and am overjoyed each time a new name comes up. But it saddens me when a name has to be dropped because the score or scores were below the Average or total for those placing in the Top Ten. Herewith is a list in rank order of those who have been in there "pitchin'", but due to one circumstance or another, have fallen short of the national rating.

There are only 4 I.W.s competing in Open, so those names will appear nationally in one system or another. It's noteworthy, however, that Irish Wolfhounds have one representative competing in Utj_lity: Ch. Coleen Ka. t.hle:en the 13anshee who has one leg with a 188 (owned by Ward). O.K. NOWl EVERYBODY HANG IN THERE!

Dear Marvin,
I hear congratulations are due you and Sag getting another leg at the show. He'll be smarter than you pretty soon, Marvin.
Well, isn't the world in a sorry way these days? Look at the cost of just living. It's shameful. Say, the other day while worrying over it - and reading PEOPLE magazine so's not to waste my time -I came across an article about Phyllis Diller' s Lhasa Apso, Phearless," who's nothing but a fur-covered kidney that barks .'' Phyllis says her dog ''can't control her woo-woos. She's ruined a whole green carpet - thought it was grass. Then she ruined the red carpet in the bathroom. God only knows what she thought that was - Georgia, probably." But Phyllis can't get angry with Phearless and travels everywhere with her. Well , you know, Marvin, I was kind of amused until I got to that travelling part. It crossed my mind with Phearless on the go so much, it's lucky she's a small kind of dog. Being moisturized constantly that way, the world would soon be awash if she was one of your wolfhounds, Marvin. Then, too, I figure with Phearless dampening hotels, motels, monuments and well-loved public buildings, it's no wonder none of those places welcome you and your big dogs. I think I'll send Phyllis some signs saying "PHEARLESS SLEPT HERE." She can leave 'em around in her travels and then I'll know where not to hang my hat!
Well, see you soon, Marvin. Keep your feet dry.
Justin

Man's oldest friend? Israeli archaeologists digging in the Levant believe they have unearthed evidence that the dog was the first animal to be domesticated by man. The skeletons of a man and a puppy have been discovered among the remains of a Natufian settlement dating between 10,000 and 12,000 years ago, and the ma1.1's hand is actually resting on the puppy.

Dog Tagged o4 PUBLICIST for a kennel-dub dog show was looking for attractive dogs to use in photographs. She had a list of names of owners and finally got one woman on the telephone.
"I understand you have a very beautiful Irish wolfhound," said the publicist, "and we'd like to send a photographer to take his picture." There was a long silence at the other end. Finally, the woman replied, "I don't know what you're talking about. All I've got out here is an Irish booze hound, and if you wan.t his picture I'll wake him up."
