2- Summary

The famous Sherlock Holmes and his loyal friend Watson have to resolve a strange case when a man called Dr Mortimer asks for them. The problem is that in Dartmoor a rich man, Sir Charles, has been murdered, or that is what Dr Mortimer suspects, although his death was natural. Holmes becomes interested in the story about the huge hound who has been in the foggy moor at nights causing fear between the townsfolk. Holmes decides not to go to investigate but Watson instead.

Watson goes gladly by himself to look for answers. There, he meets Sir Henry who doesnt know anything about the legend and is the heir of the goods. He starts to meet people who can be suspects, like the butler Mr Barrymore, his wife Mrs Barrymore, the Stapleton brothers, Mr Frankland and her daughter, Laura Lyons, who was supposed to meet Sir Charles the night of his death according their investigations.

One day, Watson and Sir Henry find out about the disappearance of one prisoner, Selden, who was actually Mrs Barrymore brother. Watson, while inspecting the huts round the moor finds one that has signs to have been used and then meets Sherlock, who lied to him and went there to search by himself and to distract the enemy.

Watson told him about all the happenings in the mansion and his conversation with Laura Lyons, who was cheated by Mr Stapleton, the man who plotted it all. Truthfully the sister of Mr Stapleton was actually his wife and he was the son of Sir Roger Baskerville, the antique family. They start to suspect he is after the inheritance. That night they heard cries in the moor. They ran hopelessly in that direction but it was too late. Thankfully the man lying in the ground wasnt Henry but Selden wearing Henrys old clothes. Mr Stapleton appeared suddenly, and seemed disappointed to see Seldens corpse and not Henrys.

Holmes and Watson were sure about the murderers identity but they needed evidence so they started to plan a trap. They acted like they were to leave and go to London and asked Henry to go dinner with the Stapletons. When Henry crossed the moor to return they saw a monstrous hound running behind Henry. Holmes and Watson fought their fear and attacked the hound, who was painted with phosphorus, making him burn with fake flames.

Later they found Mrs Stapleton lying in a room, beaten up by her husband, who managed to escape. They looked for him in the marsh but he wasnt anywhere round there so they thought he probably sank.

With that, Holmes and Watson solved the mystery of the Hound of the Baskervilles.

3- Opinion and personal mark

My opinion of this book is pretty good. I think is an interesting story that makes you think and thats very easy to read. I actually love mystery novels so I know other titles of Conan Doyle. He is one of my favourite writers because his books are amusing, light and addictive. The story has been too short and simple for me but I liked it. The ending is a bit open buts cool.

My mark would be 8.5 because is interesting but a little bit predictable.
