    Albufera and Albufereta

These are the wetlands of thebays of Alcdia and Pollensa, both of which are now protectednature reserves, Albufera havingbeen legally protected in 1988.

Home to numerous birds andducks, they are a birdwatchersparadise. The reception toAlbufera is located by theEnglish Bridge in Playa deMuro. Most of Albufera lies in themunicipality of Muro, though it

once extended as far as the portof Alcdia, and indeed some of itis still visible there today.

Alcanada(map 22)Originally conceived as agarden-city resort in the 1930s,Alcanada is nowadays a quiet, largely residential area but alsothe location for the GolfAlcanada, designed by RobertTrent Jones and opened in 2003.

Alcdia(map 8)Once upon a time, in Romandays, it was the main settlementon Majorca, but it was thenknown as Pollentia. The city

A walls were finished in 1363,

having been started during thereign of King Jaume II of

Mallorca (1276-1311) in theprevious century. The nameAlcdia comes from the ArabicAl-Qudya (the hill), when Alcdiaformed part of an area that theMuslim occupiers calledBullansa, which comprised

Alcdia, Pollensa and part ofwhat is now the mountainmunicipality of Escorca.

Anglada CamarasaHis full name, in Catalan, wasHermenegild Anglada i

Camarasa. He was a painterfrom Barcelona who, in 1914together with an Argentinianpainter Tito Cittadini, formedwhat was to be dubbed thePollensa School art movement. He was a contemporary of

several other painters, poets andwriters, such as SantiagoRusiol and Adan Diehl (thefounder of the Hotel Formentor)who were instrumental increating Puerto Pollensa as adestination for visitors. Thepromenade (Paseo AngladaCamarasa) in Puerto Pollensathat leads to the Pinewalk is ofcourse named after him.

BBarcars (map 22)This quiet part of Alcdia onPollensa Bay has a tiny marina, acouple of hotels and the long-established Red Rumbar-restaurant. It also has a

couple of secrets. Somewhere inthe area was the minor port ofRoman times. Barcars wasalso, for some fifteen years, aplace of residence for OttoSkorzeny, the Nazi officer whowas the Spanish co-ordinator of

    the ODESSA network.

BellevueBuilt in the early 1970s on landreclaimed from the Albuferawetland, Bellevue was the mostambitious holiday complexproject on Mallorca. It couldaccommodate 6,500 people (itsmaximum nowadays is more like5,000), but it ran into problemsalmost from the word go. Thedevelopers, a German companywhich had been responsible forthe Reina hotels (now Club Mac),went bankrupt and it wasnt until1983 that it was reallyestablished as the hotel complex

it is today. So dominant isBellevue that the tourism centreof Puerto Alcdia is sometimes

    referred to just as Bellevue.

    Bicycle Holidays

Founded by the Swissprofessional cyclist Max Hrzelerin the late 1980s, BicycleHolidays is one of the most

important tour operatorsspecialising in cycling tourism onMallorca, bringing thousands ofcyclists to the island each yearand being closely involved withthe staging of cycling events.

BinissalemJust south of Inca, Binissalem, whose name is clearly derivedfrom Arabic, is the centre ofMallorcas wine industry. TheDenominaci dOrigenBinissalem is a quality markwhich applies to wine producersin other parts of Mallorca, e.g. inSanta Maria and Santa Eugnia. The town stages a wine fair andfiesta in late September eachyear, the Vermar.

medallist and winner of the 2012Tour de France, has helped toraise the profile of Mallorca as acycling destination. Each winter, from December to early

February, his team, Team Sky,base themselves at the VanityGolf hotel in Puerto Alcdia.

    Bger

Recently, Bger appeared on amap of the world with rude placenames. It is not pronounced likethat, however. A small town of

just slightly more than 1,000people (it is in fact the smallestMallorcan town by land area), itis well known for its almonds andcarobs. In 2012, Bgercelebrated the 200th anniversaryof being granted independencefrom neighbouring Campanet.

BullfightingA controversial subject to say theleast, there are two bullfightingrings in the northern area.Bullfights are staged duringAlcdias Sant Jaume fiesta inJuly and Muros Sant Joan fiestain June.

The towers. So, what are they, those towers dotted along thebay of Alcdia in Playa de Muro,

Can Picafort and Son Serra? What they are not, or were not, were watchtowers. Nor did theyhave anything to do with the CivilWar. They were constructed afterthe war and their primarypurpose was as targets for

torpedo practice by submarinesbased in Puerto Alcdia, thoughthey did also act as navigationalaids. Bernat Calc was themaster builder who oversaw theirconstruction. Their stone wasquarried in Alcanada and broughtby truck. Their construction washard work as there werent thecranes that there are nowadaysto lift the stones.

CCala San Vicente(map 56)A series of small coves, thispicturesque part of Pollensa hasbeen attracting artists since thestart of the last century. Its mosticonic landscape is the horse

promontory, and horse isappropriate in that one of itsmore celebrated residents wasAligi Sassu, the sculptor who hasleft an enduring landmark in thearea - the horse of the HorseRoundabout in Puerto Alcdia.

Can Picafort(map 14)At the end of the nineteenthcentury, there were no buildingsin Can Picafort apart from twocabins, one of which belonged toa Jeroni Fuster. The residencewas called Picafort, which wasprobably to do with mosquitobites (bad itch, or somethinglike that). In 1908, a doctorbought the land and built the firstproper house, and so CanPicafort came into being.

CanadairA familiar sight, and perhapsunfortunately so, are the

Canadair fire-fighting planes, which are based in PuertoPollensa. In honour of the

planes, one has been created asa sculpture on a roundabout inthe resort.

    Colonia Sant Pere

Part of the municipality of Art,this charming place dates back

to the late nineteenth century. Itwas one of a number ofcolonies which weredeveloped in predominantlycoastal areas as part of ascheme to farm more land and toalso give greater living space.

CrestatxWith its old oratory, Crestatx canclaim a longer history than someother parts of the area. In fact,Crestatx, or rather its people, formed part of the originalpopulation of Sa Pobla, whichcame into being in 1300. Thepeople were relocated.

Cruise shipsPalma may be where the bigcruise ships arrive, but PuertoAlcdia has, since 2012, beenreceiving cruise ships as well. Asyet, though, the number islimited, as is the size of ship.

    Formentor

The drive to the cape ofFormentor is one of the hairiest

going, but it is one worthenduring for the amazing views.Along the promontory is one ofMallorcas most famous hotels, one which is the regular recipientof awards. It is the HotelFormentor. Its story is bound up

with the development of PuertoPollensa as a tourist destination,as its founder was anacquaintance of artists who wereso important in putting Pollensaon the map in the early twentiethcentury. He was an Argentinian

poet named Adan Diehl. Hemarried into wealth, whichhelped him to acquire the land inorder to build a hotel which hewanted to be a place whereartists, fellow poets andintellectuals would gather. It was

a romantic dream and one thatwas destined to end in disaster.Opened in 1929, the GreatDepression hit and the hotelsuffered because it wasaccessible only by boat. Diehland his wife were financiallyruined and they returned toArgentina in 1934, their passagepaid for by sympathetic residentsof Pollensa.

company, Club Mediterrane. The first club was on theBeach of the French in PuertoAlcdia. It started in 1950. Blitz isoften attributed with havingoriginated the concept of all-inclusive, though the club in

Alcdia, with its tents and an airof everyone mucking in, wasrather different to what we nowcall all-inclusive.

GlosadorsIf you ever encounter a glosador, and you are more likely to atwinter fiesta events, you willalmost certainly not have a cluewhat they are on about. TheseMallorcan singers, monologuists, call them what you will, are firmlypart of Mallorcas folk tradition. They were important in passingon stories at times in the pastwhen the local dialect,Mallorqun, was unwritten.

GolfThere are two golf courses in thearea, those of Alcanada andPollensa, but there used to

another one. It was built on dryparts of Albufera in PuertoAlcdia. It dated from the early1930s, but it ceased to be whenit was converted into a landing-strip for Italian planes after theoutbreak of the Civil War in 1936.

HermitageThere are various ermitas andone of these hermitages is to befound in La Victoria, up themountain above Alcdia goingfrom Bonaire. At the start of Julythere is a fiesta which is very

Mallorcan. One for the people ofAlcdia, some of them stayovernight in a makeshiftcampsite by the hermitage.

    I-JIberostar

In Alcdia but much more so inPlaya de Muro and Can Picafort,Iberostar is an important nameamong the hotels. It is one ofMallorcas big four hotel chains.

The others are Meli, Riu andBarcel (Hotel Formentorbelongs to Barcel). Yet Iberostaris much younger than the otherthree. It was founded in the1980s. Its president, MiguelFlux, is part of an

entrepreneurial family which alsoowns the Camper footwearcompany, which is based in Inca.

    Ironman

This May, the fourth ThomasCook Ironman 70.3 was held inPuerto Alcdia. It attracted nearly4,000 participants, confirming itssuccess, its internationalimportance and its status as oneof Mallorcas premier sportsevents. There is to be anotherIronman, a full version, on 27September this year, and it willalso be staged in Puerto Alcdia.Ironman has added to Alcdiasreputation for sports tourism.

Joan MarchBorn in Santa Margalida in 1880,March was arguably Mallorcas

most important businessman ofthe last century. His initial fortunecame partly from tobaccosmuggling, but subsequentlythere was little business inMallorca that didnt bear hisstamp. He founded the

Trasmediterrnea shippingcompany, was involved with theGESA electricity company and,in 1926, founded the BancaMarch. His notoriety washeightened by his involvementwith General Franco (he becameknown as Francos banker),and he is nowadays reviled bymany in his home town becauseof that unwelcome association.

    John Frederick Bateman

He was one of the British

engineers who undertook theproject to drain Albufera in thesecond half of the nineteenthcentury, a project that was onlypartially successful. His legacyalso includes the Gatamoixestate in Alcdia, now privatelyowned but originally a colony forthose who worked on thedrainage and on cultivating partsof Albufera for wheat growing.

These jars, snatchedfrom the couples, are symbolic ofpart of the legend; that the Saintwas taking food in a jar tofarmers but the Devil intervenedand smashed the jar.

N-ONaturismMallorcas first official naturisthotel was opened in ColoniaSant Pere last year. It is near tothe beach in Son Serra deMarina, which is well known forits naturism. Other beacheswhere naturism occurs includethe rustic beach between Playade Muro and Can Picafort.Necropolis

Outside Can Picafort, on thecoast at Son Real, is a necropolis

burial site which dates from theprehistoric Talayotic period of atleast the first Millennium BC.

OlivesThe cultivation of olives inMallorca began with the Greeksor Phoenicians from beforeRoman times. By the eighthcentury, Mallorcan oil was beingexported to north Africa. The

islands oil is considered to beone of the highest quality. Itforms part of pa amb oli (breadand oil). The very best olives aresaid to be grown around Selva, where, in Caimari, there is anolive fair in November.

PPhilip NewmanLittle known in Britain,Manchester-born Newmans

fame as a violinist was cultivatedin Belgium (he was friendly withthe royal family) and Portugalbefore, in 1962, he founded thePollensa Music Festival.Originally held in September, itnow runs from late July through

August. Newman died in 1966.Pollensa(map 50)There is a theory that Pollensawas founded by people fleeing

Pollentia (Alcdia) in the fifthcentury, but there is littleevidence to support this. Thetown came into being in theimmediate aftermath of Jaume Isconquest in 1229 when theKnights Templar established

themselves. It grew rapidlybefore the Black Deathintervened in the middle of thefourteenth century. The namecomes from Bullansa, the Arabicadministrative area, though thisin turn was derived from

Pto be named. The Roman townin Alcdia was developed from70BC. The commonly heldtheory that it was totallyabandoned when the Vandalsinvaded in the fifth century is now

open to some dispute, evidenceof a new wall having been built inthat century suggesting that itwasnt abandoned. The style ofthe wall was probably Byzantine, which also draws into questionthe idea that the Byzantines

didnt arrive until the sixthcentury. Excavations started inearnest in the 1950s, andPollentia is now known to havebeen much larger than originallythought, joining modern PuertoAlcdia with Barcars on the bayof Pollensa.

PosidoniaIf you encounter fibrous balls thatcan look like kiwi fruits on thelocal beaches and wonder whatthey are, the answer lies withposidonia sea grass, which isprolific in the sea aroundMallorca. The sea grass is vitalfor the local eco-system, helping

to prevent coastal erosion and toreduce carbon dioxide levels (thegrass traps CO2). As a result,

efforts are taken to conserve thegrass and its abundant andcolourful undersea meadows.

    Power stations

The old power station in PuertoAlcdia came into operation in

1957. With greater capacityneeded, the new power station(Es Murterar) was built in thelate 1970s and started producingelectricty in 1981. It is one of themain energy sources forMallorca and Menorca. The oldpower station continuedoperations for some ten years, but it has been all but abandonedever since. Plans to convert itinto a science and technologymuseum have pretty much beenscrapped. By the old powerstation there is an urbanisationknown as Poblat de GESA, afterthe electricity company, whichwas created to house workers atthe plant.

    Quality

Several quality systems applylocally to tourist businesses andbeaches. Alcdia and Pollensawere pioneer destinations for asystem called SICTED, which isa quality certification for anybusiness operating in the tourismsector. You will also see a Qmark on some establishments, which is a separate system. Allbeaches in the area have BlueFlags and, in addition, severalhave obtained ISO and other

    Q-R standards for management and

    environmental control.

Ramon LlullA name you might encounterround and about, Llull is one ofMallorcas most importanthistorical figures. Born in 1232,he wrote what is considered tohave been the first Europeannovel (in Catalan), but he wasmore than just a writer. Heinvented a rudimentarycomputer, the Lullian Circle, which supposedly revealed allpossible truths. The 700thanniversary of his death will behonoured next year. continued page 52

sculptures. From the Pollensasymbol of the cock to theCanadair in Puerto Pollensa tothe horse in Puerto Alcdia,

these works of art areeverywhere. The horse wasdone by the Italian Aligi Sassu,

    SSa Pobla

A town famed for its potatoes andalso its rice (grown in Albufera),it was created in 1300 as one ofthe towns granted royal status byJaume II. Its full name was

originally Sa Pobla dHuialfs, this second part coming from theArabic and meaning watermeadow. Sa Pobla itself meansthe populace, as in a settlementof people, and should not beconfused with poble (village in

    Catalan - pueblo in Spanish).

SaintsThere are many, but here are justa few.Antoni.He gives his nameto Sa Poblas parish church, andSa Pobla is where the Catalancult of Antoni was established. He was an Egyptian monk whoendured a hermits existence inthe desert and hallucinations ofdevils. Bartomeu. One of theTwelve Apostles, Bartholomewsday is 24 August, and Alcdiacelebrates it in a way unique tothe town with a parade oflanterns made from melons.Jaume. Another apostle, James

is Alcdias patron and its parishchurch is named after him. KingJaume I had considered calling

the town Sant Jaume deGuinyent, a reference to asettlement which pre-dated hisconquest, but he stuck with theArabic, which morphed intoAlcdia. Joan. Saint John theBaptist, in other words. His day is

24 June and its local celebrationis mostly in Muro. He is patron ofthe parish church there.Margalida.Known in English asSaint Margaret of Antioch, she isprobably more the stuff of legendthan fact. She suffered all sortsof horrors before apparentlybeing put to death in 304. She isco-patron of Sa Pobla along withJaume. Her feast day is 20 July.

Sebasti. The Christian martyrpersecuted by the Romanemperor Diocletian, Sebastian is

Palmas patron saint. He becameso because a bone said to havebelonged to him was brought tothe city when it was enduring abad bout of the plague in thesixteenth century. The bone didthe trick, and the plague came toan end. His day is 20 Januaryand is celebrated locally more asan extension to Sant Antoni thanbecause of a local connection.

Vicente, Vicen (in Catalan) orVincent in English was anothersaint who suffered at the hands

The first hotel inCala San Vicente (Cala SantVicen), an improvisedpension Can Niu, as wasreported in 1913 by the localpress, was used by some of thepainters who made the areafamous. Cala San Vicente hada more sinister resident at onetime, Anton Zischka, a Gestapoagent who masqueraded as a

journalist but who organiseddelivery of submarines into theMediterranean.

Sibil-laThis Gregorian chant dates fromaround the tenth century.Originally thought to have beenGreek, it became popular inCatalan lands and especially soin Mallorca where it was revived

after a period in the sixteenthcentury after it had been bannedby the Catholic Church. Sostrong is the Mallorcanassociation that UNESCO hasdeclared it a masterpiece ofintangible cultural heritage of

humanity. Apocalyptic though itslyric is, it is sung on ChristmasEve, for example in AlcdiasSant Jaume church.

Son Baul(map 14)It was in Son Baul where CanPicaforts tourism historybegan, a coastal urbanisationhaving been created in theearly 1930s. It has a touch ofhistory which is very much

older, a dolmen tomb fromTalayotic times. It perhapsdates from as long ago as1700BC. Just along from thecoast is the finca of Son Realwith its Talayotic necropolis.Son Real is considered to be an

area of cultural importance toMallorca and it was acquired bythe Balearic Government in2002.

    Ternelles

The finca of Ternelles in Pollensais perhaps best known for its pinetree and for its walk. On 17January each year there is anevent unique to Pollensa whichinvolves the climbing of a pinetree that is brought, with someceremony and no small amountof alcohol, to the town from thefinca. As for the walk, it has beenat the centre of a controversy foryears, the fincas owners, theMarch family (of Joan Marchfame), having sought to restrict

the right of way, which leads tothe Castell del Rei, a fortificationwhose origins arent totally

understood. The Romansprobably used it for lookoutpurposes, though it would seemto have also been a product ofthe ancient Talayotic period.

The mountain range whichextends from Andratx in thesouth-west of the island toPollensa. It was declared aWorld Heritage Site by UNESCOin 2011. Its tallest peak is thePuig Major, which is 1,445metres high, on top of which is aSpanish Air Force radarinstallation.
