Hendra virus continues to cause concernsBiosecurity Queensland is work-ing with the operators of aCairns equestrian centre to man-age the latest case of Hendravirus infection which occurredlate last month. The centre has been quaran-tined.Laboratory testing has con-firmed that a horse that died onthe property was infected withthe virus.Queensland Chief VeterinarianDr Rick Symons said BiosecurityQueensland officers had been onthe property assessing howmany other horses may havebeen exposed.“There have been quite a fewother horses moving on and offthe site in recent weeks,” hesaid.“We are conducting tracing ofthese horses and speaking to theowners.”Queensland's Chief HealthOfficer Dr Jeannette Young saidto date, public health expertshad identified five people whohad contact with the infectedhorse near Cairns.“Public health staff have con-

ducted thorough assessmentstoday and all contacts have hada low level of exposure to thesick horse,” Dr Young said.“We acknowledge that these aredifficult circumstances for thesepeople. “Our public health staff willcontinue to consult with them toensure they are provided withall the information and supportthey require. “I can also confirm that thewoman assessed as having ahigh level of exposure to a horseinfected with Hendra virus nearRockhampton, remains in a sta-ble condition.“The patient does not have anysymptoms of Hendra virusinfection. “This is the sixth Hendra virusincident in Queensland this year. One property at Rockhamptonand two properties near Mackayremain under quarantine afterrecent confirmed cases ofHendra virus infection. The latest ‘Guidelines for veteri-narians handling potentialHendra virus infections in hors-es’ has been updated and is

readily available for vets atwww.biosecurity.qld.gov.auFor more information on Hendravirus contact BiosecurityQueensland on 13 25 23 or visitwww.biosecurity.qld.gov.auYou can also follow BiosecurityQueensland on Facebook andTwitter (@BiosecurityQld).The current situation in NSWremains stable.Last year, 10 horses on eightproperties died due to infectionwith Hendra virus. These cases occurred betweenJune 30 and August 28. Allaffected properties were in northeastern NSW. No further cases have occurredin NSW since August 28, 2011.

Nevertheless, horse ownersshould remain vigilant and con-tinue to take steps to minimiseexposure of their horses. The presence of flowering andfruiting trees in or near the pad-dock in last year’s cases demon-strates the importance of keep-ing horses out of paddocks inthis period, when trees are mostattractive to bats. Any fruit lying underneath treesshould also be picked up anddisposed of once the bats havemoved on, before the horses arereturned to the paddock.Hendra is a notifiable emer-gency animal disease. If you suspect your horse hasHendra virus keep everyoneaway from the horse and callyour veterinarian immediately. The vet will notify the localLivestock Health and PestAuthority or an inspector withNSW DPI, if they consider thecase highly suspect for Hendra. If they are unavailable, and theillness is progressing rapidly, call the Emergency AnimalDisease Watch Hotline on 1800675 888.

Biosecurity Queensland andthe NSW DPI wish to thankparticipants in the Hendravirus survey. The survey hasnow closed. The results willbe analysed and used to tar-get areas of greatest needwith information, and devel-op future Hendra virus riskmanagement strategies, plans and policies.

Be present when your mare foalsBy GEORGIA KIRBY

“We lost our foal last night.”“If we had been there we could have savedit.” These are the words I get greeted with fromdevastated horse breeders, time and timeagain over the breeding season. All the planning, nearly a year of waiting andthe financial and emotional investment, destroyed within minutes and in many casesit's preventable - just for the sake of beingthere when your mare foals. I hear many people say, “horses have been foaling by themselves forthousands of years, you should leave them alone to foal”. This is a very naive way of thinking. Yes, wild horses foal alone, very successfully and natural selection cullsout those that don't. Once the horse was domesticated, we took that nat-ural selection from them, we placed them in artificial surroundings, wefeed artificial feeds, we then cross breed them. All of this leads to increased risk of foaling complications, and it is nowour responsibility, to monitor and ensure the well being of our mares andfoals. Being a responsible horse breeder means you need to be present whenyour mare foals, so you are able to get assistance when things go wrong. Situations like, the sack did not break and the foal suffocated. The foal’s shoulders were stuck and the foal was lost and nearly lost themare as well. The foal was mal presented and both the mare and foal were lost. These are just a few of the complications that occur and in many cases thelosses can be prevented. There are products on the market such as foaling alarms and foaling pre-dictor kits, which can help alert you to when your mare will foal. Don'tleave it to fate, protect your mare and foal, when they need you most. If no complications arise you get to enjoy your foal’s start in life, which toany horse breeder is a very special and exciting event. For more information on foaling products, please contact Foalguard,www.foalguard.com or phone 03-5342-2206.

The Horse Report

By DAVID LOVELL BVScRedlands Veterinary Clinic

Diarrhoea in the adult horse canbe a very frustrating and difficultissue to deal with. As always, the only way to haveany real chance of controlling theproblem is to work out what iscausing it, and then take steps tomanage and cure. Fortunately most cases of diar-rhoea are transient and self-cur-ing and many people deludethemselves into thinking that theparticular magic potion or reme-dy they used was the ‘cure’whereas in reality, most cases aresimple and due to some minordigestive upset that has quicklybeen self-remedied. Those that are not so simple canbe very serious and extremelyfrustrating to control. The first essential in dealing withdiarrhoea is to have some under-standing of the horse's digestivesystem. The horse has a rather uniquehind gut digestive tract and thehorse is primarily a herbivorewhich means they are designedto consume and digest grass, for-age, and other plant material. The stomach and small intestinein the horse play a very minor

role in the horse's digestive sys-tem and proportionately, arerelatively small in comparison tothe caecum and large colon of thehorse. The large colon is very large andthe contents are very liquid andsoft. As the food leaves the large colonand enters the relatively shortsmall colon, the ingesta is stillvery much fluid. Incredibly, in the passage of onlya couple of metres of small colon, almost all of this fluid is absorbedby the normal horse and we havethe typical dry, well-formed fae-cal balls as the food enters thevery short rectum to be passedout as our expected pile ofmanure. It only takes some relatively smallchange in either the efficiencyand ability of the small colon toabsorb the water, or the speed oftransit of the material to result inloose or watery manure. There are a number of very seri-ous degenerative or infiltrativedisease processes that can resultin a reduced absorptive efficiency, and if your horse is unlucky todevelop one of these problems, then a cure can be very unlikely.Fortunately most problems arethe result of some increased

speed of transit and are inflam-matory in nature. We have to attempt to work outwhat is causing the inflammation. The first inclination of most own-ers is to presume that the horsehas developed some ‘infection’and they expect antibiotics to beable to fix the problem. The fact is that a primary infec-tion is very rarely the cause, andif it is, then the bacteria that isusually responsible, salmonellaspp., will almost certainly not besusceptible to the administrationof antibiotics. This is not because of resistance, but because the germ lives andhides in the myriad of roughen-ings and proliferations that existon the mucosal surface of theinner lining of the intestine andantibiotics cannot get any accessto the bugs. Salmonella infection can in factbe an extremely serious and oftenlife threatening disease. This type of infection particularlyoccurs in horses subjected tosome severe form of stress ormanagerial change such as trans-port or some other illness ormajor surgery. These horses require seriousintensive care and usually admit-tance to a hospital for manage-ment. Some of these horses that recoverfrom an acute illness can be leftwith chronic diarrhoea which canbe difficult to cure. The infection that causes mostdiarrhoea is in fact parasite infec-tion. Fortunately the advent of theivermectin family of wormers hasdramatically reduced the inci-dence of parasitic diarrhoea, butthere are still many cases of‘resistant’ worm infections thatrequire some very aggressivetherapy to control.Without doubt, the most commoncause of diarrhoea is some typeof change in the nutrition, or

feed, that the horse is consuming. The most important thing tounderstand about the horse isthat 90% of the digestion of thefood that is eaten is carried outby microbial fermentation of thematerial in the lumen of the largeintestine. Millions of bacteria and protozoaattack the food material as itenters the large bowel and con-vert it to fatty acid compoundswhich are absorbed andprocessed by the horse to pro-duce essential nutrients. This means that all normal horseshave a very large population ofmixed bacteria always living intheir gut. This population has evolved anddeveloped over time to cope anddeal with the particular food thatthe horse is eating. Any change in feed, particularlyif sudden, can quickly change thelocal environmental conditions inthe bowel and cause certain bac-teria to die and allow other formsto proliferate. It is this sudden change in themake-up of the micro flora of thegut that can result in differentchemical composition and canoften cause inflammation whichresults in a quicker passage offood and loose manure. In many of these cases, the newpopulation stabilises, the bodybecomes used to them, and theinflammation stops. Obviously the task for the man-agement is to analyse the feedand determine any changes.Certainly if the horse has sudden-ly gained access to some unusualor undesirable food, the fix is toremove it and return the horse tothe feed it is used to.Another relatively common causeof diarrhoea is the ingestion ofsand. Horses typically spend a largepart of each day grazing and for-aging around on pasture.

From page 12If the grass is sparse or short, andthe soil has a content of sand, then the horse's lips are constant-ly licking up particles of sandand swallowing it. This accumulates with time in aparticular part of the large boweland builds up, resulting ininflammation, again shorteningthe transit time, less water isabsorbed resulting in loosestools. Examination of the horse candetect this by either finding sandin the manure that is passed, orhearing the very typical andincredible sounds that the accu-mulated sand makes when listen-ing with the stethoscope (pic-tured). Treatment obviously isimpossible unless the ingestion ofsand is stopped. In most cases, simply doing thiswill result in a cure. Oils and psyllium husks can alsobe helpful.Drugs can be a cause. Certainly administration of someantibiotics can induce diarrhoea.Fortunately we have a fairlygood idea of what can go wronghere and the ‘deadly’ antibiotics

are rarely givennowadays. A very commondrug that canresult in diar-rhoea isphenylbuta-zone. Some horsescan react

adversely to this resulting inulceration and inflammation ofthe lining of the intestine. Early recognition and withdrawalof the drug usually results in acure. The drug is very commonlyused in the horse and ownersshould be very observant of theirhorse to recognise any possibleproblems. Do not also forget that certaintypes of salts can cause diarrhoeaand some processed feeds canhave a relatively large content.Always be aware and assess this. Examination and diagnosis of theproblem requires a comprehen-sive assessment of the horse.Obviously analysis of the dietand history of the horse is criticaland can often be the mostrewarding. If we are assessing a horse with

diarrhoea, obviously we will per-form a full and complete clinicalexamination. Blood tests should be carried outas they can be an indicator ofinflammation, or in one of thevery serious forms of diarrhoea, low protein can be a critical indi-cator. Blood analysis will also assessliver and kidney function. We also usually collect peritonealfluid from the abdomen of thehorse and perform a rectal biopsywhich can give indications ofsome generalised bowel diseases.W e have many therapies andtreatments that can be very use-ful but they must be targeted atthe particular problem and so afull and thorough examinationand assessment is mandatory. All the old favourites such asanti-ulcer medications, and mate-rials that supposedly ‘line’ andprotect the gut such as kaolin, pectin, and charcoal, unfortunate-ly are usually useless in the horsebecause of the very large surfaceareas of the large colons and theenormous doses of material thatare needed to have any realeffect.

Dealing with diarrhoea in horses Researcher seekshelp in survey

A researcher at the Universityof New England believes thatthe ability to browse on a rangeof trees, shrubs, herbaceousplants, roots and mosses mightbe important for the health andwellbeing of horses.Mariette van den Berg, a pro-fessional equine nutritionist, isgiving horse owners the oppor-tunity to contribute to herresearch through the NationalHorse Foraging Survey. Ms van den Berg founded MBEquine Services, which pro-vides specialised equine nutri-tion and horse property designand pasture management. “In nature, horses browse a lot.which raises the question: 'Howdo domesticated horses copewith an enclosed environmentin which there is no - or onlylimited - access to browsing?Isthere something in browsingthat might be important for theirnutrient balance or gut and den-tal health?" ERIC TIGHEwww.healwithease.com

This is a interesting topic towrite on - it could be a simpleopen and shut case that is easyto fix or will clear itself with achange of diet or maybe aworming. But it could be a symptom ofsomething a lot more sinister, only time and working throughthe process or a good testingprocess will find the answers. So let’s look at the symptoms fora minute -loose stools that quiteoften have a smell to them. The severity and how long hasthe symptoms being running forare things to look at. 1. The diarrhoea is related to afeed change either quainty orquality this is often just a dis-ruption to the program but witha few adjustments will be easyto fix. We do have some basictools that are great to help atthis stage which can quite oftenspeed up the recovery process. Which will minimise the effectson your horse, this is quiteimportant if you are away com-peting or getting ready for acompetition.2. At this stage it is more of aproblem that has been lingeringaround for a while that isannoying but doesn't seem toeffect condition or performanceat a level we can recognise. However it can affect the abilityof a horse to cope through thetraining process or as you liftthe demands on the horse thediarrhoea will start to take itstoll on condition, performanceor behaviour. Most of the time a horse has hadall the basic changes made in aendeavour to fix this feed ,

worming , etc. At this level weneed to look at the diarrhoea asa symptom not a cause. It could be a emoninal issue thatis causing the problem, so onceagain work with some of thebasic tools and start to look atissue with more of a holisticapproach in mind.3. Now this is were it starts toget interesting as all of the firstlevel strategies have been tried,we are at the stage that mostpeople have tried not just onebut a couple of different ofantibiotics to no avail in fact itseems to be getting worst. The diarrhoea is now visuallyeffecting health and condition. We now have to take care ofhealth at all levels keeping thehorse hydrated is of importance.Once again working in a holisticapproach we have had somevery good results at this stage.4. At this point things becomechronic and if it is a young foalor a older horse you could bequite a bit of trouble. The system has really been com-promised and it needs helpquickly as to help with hydra-tion and the basics of life thereis not much anyone can do. As I have stated, we need tolook at diarrhoea in horses as asymptom not a cause so thereare many things it could be,from our end we have found itcould be any one of the follow-ing or a combination that causesdiarrhoea in horses. Feed, emotional, stress related, bacterial, viral, chemical, or agenetic predisposition. All of which we can be helpwith using natural energy reme-dies along with a sound testingprocess to identify what is goingon.

Diarrhoea could be asymptom not a cause

Diarrhoea inhores could be asymptom of oneof a number ofprobblems.Finding outwhich one is thechallenge.

So your pony needs a dental.Pony club, it's a great way tospend a Sunday and you canhave a lot of fun and learn usefulskills, however your ability toattend pony club and have funwith your horse or pony isdirectly related to their healthand wellbeing. Of course there will always be alot to think about when caringfor a horse or pony and there arethree key areas that always needto be looked after - feet, food, and teeth. By looking after these areas cor-rectly we ensure that if our ponyis otherwise fit and healthy thenthey are ready to attend ponyclub and enjoy it as much as wedo.In this article we are going totalk about dental vet checks on ahorse’s mouth - their teeth andgums. There are some basic points thatevery horse owner/horse ridershould know about their horse’steeth, this means that mums anddads need to know this stuff toeven if they don't actually ridethe horse. So what do we need to know?Textbooks on dental care forhorses are very large and it isn'tpossible to cover all of that infor-mation here so let’s look at somesimple facts and some points tocheck when choosing someoneto examine your horse’s mouthand treat any issues.OK how many teeth does a horsehave? The answer varies as not allhorses have all teeth but an adulthorse will have between 36 to 44teeth.What kind of teeth do horseshave? Most of the teeth a horse has arevery different from our teeth, they are called hyposodont teethand they are very long with mostof the tooth being under the gumin the horse’s jaw. As a horse chews it wears downthe tooth and eventually thetooth will wear out, for this rea-son it is very important not toskip a visit from your dental vetas many of the horses and poniesat pony club are older and ifproblems are left untreated theresult is often very bad. Often when the horse sees a den-tal vet, teeth will need to beremoved and things that couldhave been treated quickly and

simply arenow muchharder andmore expen-sive to fixthan before. So what do Ineed to do tolook after mypony?Horses andponies whoare riddenregularlyshouldreceive den-tal checksfrom a den-tal vet atleast twice a year. The vet should ask a lot of ques-tions about the horse and how iteats and what it is like to ride. It is a good idea to have your bitand bridle handy for the vet toexamine and if you have spenttime watching your horse eat itbefore the vet arrives it will beeasier to answer the vet’s ques-tions.After the vet has asked theirquestions, they will administersome pain relief to your horse, this will also relax the horse andwhen they ‘wake up’ they won'tremember anything unpleasant. The vet does this because theyunderstand that there are sensi-tive nerves in the teeth, cheeks;gums and tongue of your horseand that your horse would feelpain if the vet didn't give painrelief before beginning to exam-ine your horse’s mouth. The vet should then have a goodlook and feel of the outside ofyour horse’s head and examinethe lips and front teeth carefullyfor things like cuts and broken ordead teeth. Next a speculum (a specialdevice to keep the horses mouthopen) is placed on the horse andthe mouth will be thoroughlyrinsed out. The vet needs a very bright lightto see all the way back to theback of the mouth. They will also use a mirror andprobe, just like your Dentist doesto examine all surfaces of yourteeth. Once they have finished examin-ing the mouth the will talk toyou about your horse and begincorrecting any problems theyhave found. Because horses haveHyposodont teeth (remember)and their top jaw is much widerthan their bottom jaw , as theychew they create very sharp

points ofenamel ( thehardest sub-stance in thebody) on theoutside oftheir uppercheek teethand on theinside oftheir lowercheek teeth. These sharpenamelpoints causepainfululcers andcuts to thecheeks and

tongue, and so a dental vet willremove them (being careful notto do any damage to the nervesof the teeth). Sometimes horseswho have missed a dental exammaybe very sore in the mouthbecause of these ulcers and maybe unhappy when pressure isapplied to the reins, this makesthe situation dangerous as thehorse is in pain and the rider hasless control over the horse. The more the rider pulls on thereins to control the horse the

more pain they cause the horse. While removing sharp enamelpoints is a very important part ofcaring for your horse’s teeth, horses get all the dental prob-lems that people do so there area lot of other things that com-monly occur in horses mouths.Things like broken or missingteeth, loose teeth, gum disease, overgrown teeth, cancer etc. Did you know that the mostcommon disease of horses isgum disease? Around 70 percent of horses areaffected so if your not treatingyour horses for gum disease youshould be.Can I tell if my horse needs adental?Quite simply the answer is no.Some horses will show signs ofpain or discomfort when eatingor being ridden but many horsesin severe pain will show littlesign of a problem, so don't betempted to skip a dental exam. Looking after your horse orpony’s teeth correctly and learn-ing about horse's mouth means itwill be happy and pain free. To learn more visit equinedentalvets.com.au

KERRY MARSH, B.Ed.,B.Ag.Sc.Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis - EquineNutritional Balancing

Recently I was interviewed on ABC radio inBrisbane relating to the 23 horse deaths inKoralbyn. It became quite apparent that there is a lackof education regarding certain poisonousplants and grasses that are fatal to horses. In fact many horse owners were interested inan education campaign. In this article ,I am going to focus onJohnson grass (sorghum halepense)andblack nightshade (solanum nigrum) as theyare common in paddocks and both aredeadly to horses. Many horse owners overlook the necessity ofmaintaining soil health. Basically this interprets as regular applica-tions of lime and often applying minerals. Soil that becomes acidic allows for thegrowth of unwanted weeds and grasses thatthrive in low pH soils. Paddocks that are overgrazed and overstocked are also targets for dangerousweeds.Generally, it is assumed that horses will noteat grasses/weeds that are toxic. However, when there is little feed in pad-docks and horses are hungry, they will often

ingest poisonous plants. Hay can often be a source of nightshade orJohnson grass so it is wise to be vigilant andknow about the source of your hay.

Black NightshadeBlack nightshade is an annual herb that hasbecome more prolific since the droughtbroke. It is widely spread in Australian andis known to be "a weed of waste spaces anda weed of cultivation" (1). There are many species of nightshades but

the most common in Australia is the blackvariety. It is easily recognisable due to the smallblack berries on the stems.A recent example of black nightshade poi-soning was when a pony was locked in smallyard due to founder. Around the perimeter of this yard weremany black nightshade plants. After 24 hours, the pony was found deadand most of the nightshade had been eatendown. The toxins in nightshade are tropane alka-loids. In horses, symptoms range from ‘milddigestive upset, to severe colic, seizures, dilated pupils, tremors, constipation and orhemorrhagic diarrhea’ (2) dependant uponhow much nightshade has been ingested.Mortality in horses is usually caused fromthe colic. Treatment if provided in time is activatedoral charcoal and or large doses vitamin Cand dolomite.Johnson GrassJohnson grass also known as sorghum is anoxious, vigorous perennial weed whichgrows abundantly throughout Australia. It is common in many properties, on road-sides and often comes in purchasedhay/silage.

It is characterised by a purplish tint on theseed head. It is a troublesome weed due to the amountof seed it produces. The recent case of 23 horse deaths inKoralbyn is also a dire warning aboutJohnson grass. I was engaged to conduct hair tissue tests ontwo of the surviving horses after the relevantauthorities failed to provide a definitivefinding. Their hair results showed very high levels ofmanganese which is common in horses on agrass diet. This then prompted a closer look at justwhat species of grasses was present in thehorse's paddock. The horses were moved from a nearby prop-erty to a new lush growth paddock and afew days later 23 had died. Eventually it was determined that Johnsongrass was indeed present in that paddockand that the horses had the symptoms ofcyanide poisoning.Johnson grass is quite a nutritious feed forhorses and cattle provided animals are notallowed access to it in the rapid growthstage. Johnson grass has the potential to release

cyanide if the conditions are right. Drought, frosts and wilts result in the plantreleasing cyanide.“Leaves are typically higher in cyanide thanstalks” (3) which are what the horse prefersto eat. Horses should not be allowed to grazeJohnson grass until it is about 60cms inheight. Deaths from Johnson grass poisoning arecommon. Low levels of cyanide are all that is requiredfor death in horses. Unfortunately, cyanide poisoning is very dif-

ficult to detect post mortem in horses. Symptoms of Johnson grass/cyanide poison-ing are flaccid tail paralysis, convulsions, urinary and bladder dysfunction, rear endincoordination, ataxia, horse goes down. If found early enough and removed fromoffending pasture, horse may recover. “The antidote of choice is sodium nitratewith sodium thiosulphate”. (4) Large doses of Vitamin C and dolomitewould also benefit. To prevent plant/grass poisonings in yourhorse, it is essential to observe your pad-docks, know where your hay comes from, know your horse's behaviour and maintainsoil health. Do not overgraze or overstock your pad-docks as where soil is bare, weeds prolifer-ate. Horses that are nutritionally balanced partic-ularly with magnesium and selenium aremore likely to recover from plant/grass poi-sonings. More information, contact Kerry Marsh on0402 772 124.

comfortable and responsive bit you can put in a

horses mouth?”

RINGS• Rings do

not contact the sensitive sides of the face eliminating head tossing caused by pinching of the lips against the teeth.

MOUTH BAR• Thinner mouth

bar eliminates contact with the roof of the mouth.

• Mouth bar floats on the rings so stays quiet at all times eliminating pressure on the tongue.

• Unique shape and position of the mouth bar encourages flexing at the pole so the horse is in the best position to work.

How many times have you heard, orgiven, the instruction to ride with “toesup, heels down, stirrup at the ball ofyour foot”? It's easy to say, but not always so easyto do, particularly if you are a novicerider, or even if you are a professionalin a demanding situation, just likeMegan Jones. With a helping hand from ToeStoppers, you will find it much easierto maintain the correct foot position, apply the correct leg aids and achieve a much improved balance and senseof confidence in the saddle.Toe Stoppers are a multi-award winning, Australian designed stirrup safetydevice, fully tried and tested across all disciplines and endorsed by leadingriders and trainers, both in Australia and overseas. Toe Stoppers attach easi-ly to your stirrup irons, and testimonials confirm it can improve your bal-ance in the saddle, help to prevent a fall, and best of all, prevent a rider frombeing caught in the stirrup and dragged in the event of an accident. The enclosed pocket and rubber tread provide extra grip and prevent thefeet from slipping which can make all the difference between a winning orlosing performance.Toe Stoppers are made of durable and lightweight material, attach easilywith velcro, providing for safe and comfortable riding, jumping, mountingand dismounting. ‘Solutions’ workshopWhether you want to become a Holistequine EALC practitioner or use theknowledge for your own healing and personal growth, these workshops andintensives will demonstrate how our “people whisperers” are having a pro-found effect on people's lives ........spiritually, emotionally and physically. The Holistequine horses provide experiential learning situations and inspiresustainable positive life changes.Personal growth becomes exponential through learning about yourself yourrelationships with others and your cosmic heritage. By aligning emotional intelligence and IQ with spiritual intelligence, wegain the practical tools to meet the challenges of our changing times. Spiritual Intelligence opens a doorway for us to co-create our future, IQgives us the expertise to make it happen and emotional intelligence is the‘glue’ we need to ground it all and be able to express ourselves with authori-ty and unconditional love. The results will balance your life generally and you will be in control andable to set healthy boundaries. You will then walk a middle ground betweenselfless and selfish, go from fear to faith and from anger to inner peace. The objective is to raise your personal ‘vibration’ therefore raising theessence of who you are resulting in a positive effect on everything andeveryone around you. Through the equine mirroring effect of the ‘Whole Body Intelligence©’ sys-tem you begin to understand and conquer the subconscious (which includesall the negativity presently holding you back) and you will have a highersense of self worth and find meaning in your life. The art of living instinctively has been lost. This will need to change if wewant to receive the gifts of intuitive intelligence because this new informa-tion along with the ability to co-create our future will only come to us whenour right brain is ready to receive.Holistequine Practitioner Training Course is in September, the cost $2,225. ‘Solutions’ workshop is on August 11th and 12th, cost is $385 for the twodays, including lunch at Cooroy on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.Call Veronica on 07 55425353 (or Sue on 0406 545652).

The Horse Report

By LINDA PARELLI Mother Nature built in theresponse of shying as a defensemechanism. However, humans see it as avice.Imagine you are walkingthrough a graveyard after mid-night. You're only nine-years-oldand you are holding yourfather's hand. Suddenly, something rustles inthe bushes. Your father jumps 10feet and turns to look with hisheart pounding, hand tight onyours, shaking with fright. Thenhe realizes that it was just a rab-bit and seeing that you are stillscared, he tries to take you up tothe bushes to prove there is noth-ing to be afraid of. How would you feel? Now consider an alternative sce-nario. The bush rustles, yourfather's hand hardly flinches, henever loses the rhythm of hisstride or takes his eyes off thepath, or tightens his hand onyours. Calmly he says, “those darn rab-bits.” Which father would you ratherhave as your leader taking you

through this scary graveyard inthe middle of the night? If you substituted a rider as thefather and a horse as the youngchild, which rider do you thinkthe horse would prefer? In a herd environment, the alpha(or most dominant) horse is theleader. If your horse was following hisfavorite alpha horse down thetrail, his confidence level wouldbe at its highest. He would feelsafe and sure about the decisionsbeing made for him, and hewouldn't feel the need to stayalert for danger. All horses know that this is thealpha horse's job. A major key insolving the problem of shying isfor you to be perceived as ‘alpha’by your horse. The most common mistakes thatpeople make with horses thatshy are: a) Blaming or punishing thehorse for shying b) Losing their focus The best two words I can giveyou to explore are: Savvy andFocus. SavvyTry to think like a horse rather

than a human. Horses, as preyanimals, are big chickens. So,don't expect your horse to be thebrave one! Punishment will not work forprey animals because they don'tunderstand it. If they are acting out of fearwhen they shy and suddenly thepredator (human) on their backcomes to life, it really com-pounds the problem and the shy-ing will become worse. Theanswer lies in preparation for asituation. In preparing a horse to be rid-den, most people lunge him inmindless circles until the horse istired enough to behave. In order to prepare your horsementally, emotionally and physi-cally, it would be better to playThe Seven Games (groundworkin Parelli Level 1) prior to riding. The Seven Games are based onwhat alpha horses do to establishtheir dominance in the herd andgain another horse's respect andtrust. The alpha horse causing the lessdominant horse to circle is onlyone of those games. The other sixgames include moving him back-wards, forwards and sideways, with physical or implied pres-sure and even causing the otherhorse to squeeze over, under orthrough a small space. Becoming your horse's alphacauses him to follow your sug-gestions without question. If you are calm, he can be calm.If you become scared, he willprepare to flee. From this per-spective, your steady emotionalstate is critical to your horse'sconfidence. So in preparing your horse toaccept you as alpha, deal withhim on the ground first, just likeanother horse would. Play these same seven games inorder to gain your horse'srespect and trust. Once you have his respect on theground, have challenged him bysending (not leading) himthrough, over or under question-able objects such as jumps, logs, tarps, under trees, into trailers, past plastic bags hanging onthings, etc. then you can transferthat leader-follower confidence

to the saddle. FocusFocus is the most powerful toolyou can have while riding. Whenyour horse is shying he is usinghis power of focus against youbecause he feels vulnerable with-out his alpha horse. The technique I use while ridingis to be aware of the things myhorse is apt to shy from andfocus beyond that point at least100 yards. This gives the horse a feelingthat you, his new alpha, are notconcerned, so why should he be? The most common mistake thatriders make in this area is theyfocus on the problem. They try to ride up to the scarything to show the horse it is notgoing to hurt him. This is humanreasoning not prey animal rea-soning! Sometimes the rider just getssurprised from the shying andnaturally clamps his legs andhands. Both of these approachescause the horse to feel that you,his alpha, is very concernedabout this ‘thing’, so he shouldbe too. We all want our horses to becalmer, smarter, braver and moreathletic but they can't be until weare! About ParelliPat Parelli, coiner of the term‘natural horsemanship’, foundedhis program based on a founda-tion of love, language and lead-ership. LOCKYER HORSE EXPOOn September 8 and 9, the Gatton Show Grounds will be the host of thefirst ever Lockyer Horse Expo and Exclusively Equine Welcome Show. This unique concept has caught the attention of Horse Talk TV, anAustralian made program that is televised in Australia as well as manyoverseas countries and they have scheduled the weekend for one of theirseries three shoots. Exhibitors can become a part of it - organisers are keeping the costs as lowas possible and anyone associated in any way with the horse industry isinvited to have a 4m by 4m indoor booth for $30 for the Saturday or $50 forboth days (limited numbers of these available) or set up their outdoorexhibit for $70 on the Saturday or $100 for both days. The public are allowed in for free and with big numbers expected, this is away of gaining big exposure for exhibitors for the smallest possible cost. The site is limited to approximately 60 at this stage, so they will be 'first topay, first to have a site' basis. Exhibitors will need to set up their own display. There is also a car boot sale on the weekend for $20 each day for anyonewho has some second hand gear or extra stock to try and move (no ani-mals permitted to be sold or exhibited at the car boot sale). The show on Sunday will be an informal, fun, and friendly, a t-shirt andjeans show; there are big prizes and an entire ring of just walk/trot classes. There are hacking, rider, Dressage and Western classes with prizes all dayfor people ‘caught being nice’ to others and every competitor gets a ribbon. The aim of the show on Sunday is to encourage more competitors toshows, do more with their horses and promote spending within the industry. The Lockyer Horse Expo and Exclusively Equine Welcome Show is, ofcourse, for all those interested in any way in horses - whether they com-pete at international level or just liked ponies when they were young.Organisers are hoping individuals, studs and businesses who take part inthe Lockyer Horse Expo see it as a great opportunity to 'sell themselves' tothe horse industry. The South East Queensland horse industry should have an opportunity likethis to present themselves to all horse and pony enthusiasts. The weekend is organised under the banner of Dilutes AustraliaFor further information, contact: Leanne Owens on 07 5465 5117or 0419 003 122 or email [email protected] Sharyn Street on 07 54 246 135 or 0403 485 865.

GRAPHIC GALA DESIGN SERVICEIn these days of advanced technology and more opportunities peoplebelieve that they're in a prime position to fulfil life long dreams of pub-lishing books or other media only to be daunted by some of the processesand costs involved with putting the final product out there. Are you a business owner or club secretary who provides hard copyreports, flyers and magazines to customers but don't have the time to pol-ish up the cover page for your products to look really professional. Doyou want to jazz up your business card? Is there also a website whichmay need a face-lift but time and skill-set not on your side? Perhaps you're a person with a passion to produce something that you'vehad a lifetime experience gaining knowledge about or developing andwant to publish an ebook to help others and derive an income. Maybe it'seven a romantic novel or childrens' story book that you want to give outthis year as a personal yet inexpensive present in hard copy or as acd/dvd. Then there's those huge family events - weddings, 21st birthdays, anniversaries and major reunions at Xmas and holidays. Memories aregreat to keep alive by photos and video clips etc. Even on the legacy sidethere probably is a favourite Granddad, Grannie, Aunt or Uncle who tellsthe most amusing stories or has the most phenomenal skills with animalsand you want to capture that on video for all family members and othersto enjoy. You can even include the family & friends overseas by surprisingthem with a stunning DVD. Finalising things like invitation/birthday/anniversary or business cards, reports & book covers, ebook graphics, CD & DVD labels/covers, websitegraphics & images can make the whole process overwhelmingly dauntingand possibly even completely down your project. You probably already "have a handle" on how to use a printer and justneed the fancy bits done. Perhaps you've already completed the CD/DVDhard work but now you've stalled on the final leg and feel disillusioned. Don't dump the project just yet though ! We can do the graphic designaspects for you even utilizing your own images in the product. You caneven send us a sketch of your ideas and we can set up the design and letyou see it over the net and finalize any finer details if necessary.
